Write a Research Introduction That Makes the Question Necessary | 把研究引言写到问题自然变得必要

A strong research introduction does not merely tell the reader what you studied. It makes the reader understand why this particular question needed to be asked.

真正强的 research introduction,不只是告诉读者“我研究了什么”。它会让读者自然理解:为什么偏偏是这个问题,现在必须被问出来。

The introduction therefore has a causal job of its own. It moves the reader through a sequence:

field → known state → unresolved problem → research need → question → contribution.

领域 → 已知状态 → 未解决问题 → 研究必要性 → 问题 → 贡献。

If any link is weak, the research question can feel arbitrary. If the gap is exaggerated, the paper loses credibility before the Methods section begins.

The University of Manchester Academic Phrasebank describes common introduction functions: establishing context or importance, presenting an issue/problem/controversy, briefly reviewing relevant literature, identifying a knowledge gap or problem, stating aims/questions/hypotheses, explaining value, and sometimes previewing method or structure.

It also summarises the well-known CARS logic:

  1. Establish the territory.
  2. Identify a niche.
  3. Occupy the niche.

This is useful as a diagnostic model—not a rigid sentence template.

2. Elsevier states the minimal scientific job | Introduction 要有 objectives + adequate background

Elsevier’s current article-structure guidance advises authors to state the objectives of the work and provide adequate background while avoiding a detailed literature survey or a summary of results.

3. Purdue frames the question as a research space | Research question 是研究空间的入口

Purdue Writing Lab’s graduate guidance describes the research question or research agenda as the articulation of the paper’s primary aim and notes that fields differ in whether this appears as an explicit question, purpose statement, hypothesis or thesis.

4. Nature treats the introduction as part of a paper’s story arc | Introduction 是 research story 的起点

5. The introduction’s real output is necessity | Introduction 最终产物不是 background,而是 necessity

At the end, the reader should be able to answer:

  • What field/problem are we in?
  • What do we already know?
  • What is still unresolved?
  • Why does that unresolved state matter?
  • What exact question does this study answer?
  • What kind of contribution could the answer make?

6. Topic importance is not research necessity | Topic 很重要 ≠ 你的 study 必要

Weak:

Writing is important for students, so this study investigates feedback.

The first clause does not establish why this particular feedback question matters.

7. Move from global importance to local intellectual need | 从“大主题很重要”进入“这个问题为什么需要回答”

Better:

Structured feedback can improve revision on supported tasks, but it remains unclear whether learners transfer those revision decisions to an unseen task without guidance.

Now the need is specific.

Weak:

or:

These sentences consume reader attention without locating the research problem.

If your study concerns delayed vocabulary retention, you probably do not need to begin with the history of language.

Territory can include:

  • importance;
