How to Learn Advanced English Vocabulary (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.002 | Turn Known Words into Word Families and Phrase Networks | 第002课:把熟词扩展成词族与词块网络

A familiar word is not a finished word. It is a doorway.
一个熟词,不是学习的终点。它是一扇门。

You already know decide. Good. Now ask: can you use decision, decisive, decisively, indecision, decision-making, reach a decision, make an informed decision, defer a decision, reverse a decision, a decisive factor and decide against something?

你已经认识 decide。很好。现在继续问:decision、decisive、decisively、indecision、decision-making 会不会?reach a decision、make an informed decision、defer a decision、reverse a decision、a decisive factor、decide against 又会不会?

If the answer is “some of them”, you have discovered the purpose of this lesson.

高级词汇学习不是不断把新的“点”加进脑中,而是把已有的点扩展成词族网络、搭配网络、词块网络和语境网络。一个词越有连接,它越容易被理解、提取、变化和迁移。

Lesson No.001 established lexical depth. Lesson No.002 shows how to build it systematically. We will take words you already know and turn them into working lexical systems.

1. Stop counting words as isolated units | 不要再把单词当作孤立单位

A traditional vocabulary notebook often looks like this:

EnglishChinese
analyse分析
assume假设
significant重要的
maintain维持

This is useful at the beginning. It is too thin for advanced learning.

初级阶段,一词一译可以快速建立入口。但是到了高级阶段,这种记录方式会遮住英语真正的结构。你看到的是四个“点”,却看不到它们后面的路。

A stronger learner sees:

  • analyse → analysis → analytical → analytically → analyst
  • assume → assumption → assumed → presumably → make an assumption → underlying assumption
  • significant → significance → significantly → significant difference → statistically significant → highly significant
  • maintain → maintenance → maintain standards → maintain control → maintain that… → maintain a distinction

The advanced learner is no longer collecting labels. The learner is building routes.

高级词汇不是词更多,而是路更多。

2. Three networks grow from one headword | 一个词可以长出三张网

Take the headword justify.

Network A: the word family | 词族网

  • justify
  • justification
  • justified
  • justifiable
  • unjustified
  • unjustifiable

Network B: the collocation network | 搭配网

  • justify a decision
  • justify the cost
  • justify the conclusion
  • justify the use of…
  • provide justification for…
  • sufficient justification
  • fully justified
  • difficult to justify

Network C: the discourse-function network | 篇章功能网

  • justify a claim with evidence
  • justify a recommendation
  • question whether a decision is justified
  • distinguish explanation from justification
  • limit a claim to what the evidence can justify

Now one word has become a reasoning system. You can use it in essays, reports, discussions and evaluations.

这就是高级词汇的方向:从一个词,长出一组可以思考和表达的工具。

3. What exactly is a word family? | 什么叫“词族”?

A word family contains related forms built around a shared lexical base. The family may include nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and negative or modified forms.

词族是围绕一个共同词根或核心概念形成的一组相关词形。它常常跨越不同词性。

CoreNounVerbAdjectiveAdverb
analyseanalysis / analystanalyseanalyticalanalytically
assumeassumptionassumeassumed / assumptive
respondresponse / respondentrespondresponsiveresponsively
signifysignificancesignifysignificantsignificantly
interpretinterpretation / interpreterinterpretinterpretive / interpretable
varyvariation / variabilityvaryvariable / variedvariably

Do not assume every grammatical slot has a common form. A theoretically possible form may be rare, specialised or unnatural. A learner dictionary confirms actual usage.

不要为了把表格填满而“制造单词”。词族学习必须回到真实英语。词典会告诉你哪些形式常见,哪些只在特殊领域出现。

4. Word families give you sentence flexibility | 词族让句子结构变得灵活

Consider one idea: the evidence was analysed carefully.

  • Verb: We analysed the evidence carefully.
  • Noun: Our analysis of the evidence was careful and systematic.
  • Adjective: We used an analytical approach to the evidence.
  • Person: The analyst reviewed the evidence.
  • Adverb: The evidence was examined analytically rather than intuitively.

Same conceptual territory, different grammatical architecture.

如果你只会一个词形,你的句子结构会被限制。掌握词族以后,你可以根据句子的需要选择名词化、动词化、形容词结构或人的角色。

This matters especially in academic and professional writing, where the same idea may need to appear in different grammatical forms across a paragraph.

5. But nominalisation is not automatically better | 名词化不等于“更高级”

Advanced learners often discover nouns such as implementation, evaluation, consideration, determination and then begin turning every verb into a noun. This can make writing dense.

很多高级学习者学会名词化之后,会出现另一个问题:每句话都变成名词。结果并不是更专业,而是更沉重。

Heavy: The implementation of the evaluation of the programme led to the identification of several limitations.

Clearer: When the team evaluated the programme, it identified several limitations.

The noun version may be useful when the process itself is the topic. The verb version may be clearer when actors and actions matter.

词族给你选择,不是给你命令。高级的关键仍然是:这个语境最需要哪一种结构?

6. Learn morphology as a prediction system | 把构词法当作“预测系统”

Morphology helps you recognise relationships. Common prefixes and suffixes can guide meaning and grammatical role.

PatternTypical clueExamples
un- / in- / im- / ir-negation or oppositeuncertain, inaccurate, impossible, irregular
re-again / backreconsider, restructure, reinterpret
mis-wronglymisinterpret, misjudge, miscalculate
inter-between / amonginteract, interdependent, interdisciplinary
counter-against / opposingcounterargument, counterproductive
-tion / -sionoften nounevaluation, decision, expansion
-ityoften abstract nounreliability, stability, complexity
-iveoften adjectiveproductive, persuasive, restrictive
-aloften adjectiveanalytical, structural, contextual
-ise / -izeoften verbprioritise, stabilise, contextualise

But morphology predicts; it does not guarantee. Invaluable does not mean “without value”; it means extremely valuable. Inflammable does not mean “not flammable”; historically it means capable of burning. Real vocabulary contains history, convention and irregularity.

所以构词法是线索,不是数学。它帮助你猜,但最后必须用词典和真实语境确认。

7. Stress can change inside a family | 词族内部,重音也会变化

Word families live in sound, not only on paper. Pronunciation can shift when suffixes are added.

  • PHOtograph → phoTOGraphy → photoGRAPHic
  • ECOnomy → ecoNOMic → ecoNOMically
  • ANalyse → aNALysis → anaLYTical
  • DEmocrat → deMOcracy → demoCRATic

If you learn only spelling, the family may remain fragmented in listening and speaking.

词族学习必须同时记录声音。否则你阅读时知道它们是一家人,听力里却像陌生人。

8. One family, many registers | 同一个词族,也有语域变化

Related forms do not always have identical register.

Example: help.

  • help — common, broad
  • helpful — common
  • helpless — common
  • helper — ordinary role word
  • assistance — more formal noun alternative, not the same family
  • facilitate — formal verb with narrower meaning, not simply “advanced help”

This matters because learners sometimes replace a familiar family with a formal near-synonym and lose naturalness.

高级学习不只是把词族“扩得更大”,还要知道什么时候不用它、什么时候需要另一个更合适的词。

9. From word family to phrase family | 从词族继续扩展到“词块族”

Now take assume.

LayerExamples
Headwordassume
Familyassumption, assumed
Verb patternsassume that…; assume responsibility; assume control
Noun collocationsmake an assumption; basic assumption; underlying assumption; false assumption
Evaluationreasonable assumption; questionable assumption; unwarranted assumption
Discoursethis assumes that…; the argument rests on the assumption that…

The vocabulary item is no longer just assume. It is a cluster of recurring patterns.

当你开始这样学习时,“词汇量”这个概念也会变化。你拥有的不是一个词,而是一组可调用结构。

10. What is a lexical chunk? | 什么是词块?

A lexical chunk is a multiword unit that speakers can process and retrieve as a familiar combination rather than assembling every word from zero.

词块可以理解为:一组经常一起出现、可以作为整体快速调用的语言。

  • take into account
  • as a result of
  • in light of
  • there is little evidence to suggest
  • from a practical perspective
  • the extent to which
  • play a significant role in
  • under certain circumstances
  • raise concerns about
  • be consistent with

The Oxford Phrase List is useful because it explicitly treats high-value phrases, phrasal verbs and collocations as part of vocabulary learning. Cambridge and British Council advanced materials likewise foreground vocabulary in context and common combinations.

高级词汇学习必须承认:英语大量存在于“多词单位”里,而不是每次从一个单词一个单词现场组装。

11. Chunks reduce real-time decision load | 词块会降低实时表达负担

When speaking, you have limited time. If every sentence requires you to choose every preposition, article and collocation independently, fluency collapses.

口语里没有时间慢慢“拼装”。词块的价值在于,它把多个小选择压缩成一个较大的可调用单位。

Compare two learning methods:

Single-word storageChunk storage
account = 考虑?take something into account
extent = 程度to a large extent
light = 光in light of new evidence
role = 角色play a significant role in
concern = 担心raise concerns about

The second column is closer to what real production needs.

这就是为什么高级词汇本里,应该有越来越多“完整可用的半成品”。

12. But chunks are not scripts | 词块不是死模板

Memorised phrases become dangerous when learners force them into every context. A chunk is useful because it is conventional, not because it must always appear unchanged.

词块学习不能变成“背万能句型”。真正的目标是知道:这组语言完成什么功能,哪些位置可以变化,哪些搭配比较固定。

Example:

  • play a significant role in
  • play an important role in
  • play a central role in
  • play a limited role in
  • play virtually no role in

You are not memorising one frozen sentence. You are learning a productive frame with controlled variation.

这就是“词块网络”:固定部分提供稳定性,可变部分提供灵活性。

13. Collocation networks grow sideways | 搭配网络会横向生长

Take the noun impact.

Adjective + impact

  • significant impact
  • substantial impact
  • major impact
  • minimal impact
  • long-term impact
  • direct impact
  • negative impact
  • economic impact

Verb + impact

  • have an impact on
  • assess the impact of
  • reduce the impact of
  • mitigate the impact of
  • measure the impact of
  • examine the impact of

Related verb

  • impact something — accepted in many professional contexts, though usage preferences vary by style
  • affect something — often the simpler neutral verb
  • influence something — suggests effect on direction or development

One noun becomes a whole phrase network. The network also teaches near-synonym choice.

高级搭配学习不是“记一句”,而是围绕一个核心词建立多个方向的连接。

14. Learn dependent prepositions as part of the chunk | 固定介词要和词一起学

For many advanced learners, preposition errors survive for years because the learner stores the adjective or verb separately from its pattern.

很多高级学习者语法整体不错,却一直在固定介词上出错。原因往往不是“不懂介词规则”,而是词汇单位储存得太小。

  • responsible for
  • capable of
  • consistent with
  • relevant to
  • dependent on
  • contribute to
  • result in
  • result from
  • distinguish A from B
  • associate A with B

Store consistent with, not merely consistent. Store contribute to, not merely contribute.

把“介词错误”重新看成“词块没学完整”,修复会更直接。

15. Learn verb patterns as lexical grammar | 动词结构也是词汇的一部分

Different verbs prefer different grammatical frames.

  • avoid doing
  • consider doing
  • decide to do
  • enable somebody to do
  • prevent somebody from doing
  • suggest doing / suggest that…
  • recommend doing / recommend that…
  • allow somebody to do
  • require somebody to do
  • insist that… / insist on doing

If you learn only Chinese meaning, you may know what the verb means but still build the sentence incorrectly.

所以高级词汇卡最好记录“词 + 结构”。例如:

prevent somebody from doing something
contribute to something / contribute to doing something
be capable of doing something

This is where vocabulary and grammar stop pretending to be separate subjects.

16. Build meaning families, not only form families | 不只有“词形族”,还有“意义族”

Words can also be grouped by shared communicative function.

For example, the function showing cause:

  • cause
  • lead to
  • result in
  • contribute to
  • trigger
  • give rise to
  • bring about

And the reverse direction, showing origin:

  • result from
  • stem from
  • arise from
  • be caused by
  • be attributable to
  • originate in/from

These words are not one morphological family, but they form a functional lexical family in the learner’s mind.

高级词汇网络同时按“词形关系”和“意义功能”组织。真正表达时,功能网络往往更容易帮助你找到词。

17. Build contrast families | 近义词要组成“对比族”

Take the broad idea “important”.

WordTypical meaningCommon routes
importantbroad neutral importanceimportant decision, important role
significantimportant/noteworthy; sometimes technical statistical meaningsignificant difference, significant impact
substantiallarge in amount/degree; considerablesubstantial increase, substantial evidence
criticalextremely important/decisive; also analytical/negative sensescritical factor, critical stage
crucialdecisive to success/outcomecrucial role, crucial decision
materialimportant enough to affect a decision; technical/legal/business contextsmaterial difference, material risk

Now the learner is not memorising six synonyms. The learner is learning six selection rules.

高级近义词学习的单位不是“词”,而是“选择条件”。

18. Build antonym and opposition networks | 反义关系也要进入网络

Contrast strengthens retrieval because the learner knows what a word is not.

  • explicit ↔ implicit
  • stable ↔ unstable / volatile
  • flexible ↔ rigid
  • reliable ↔ unreliable
  • consistent ↔ inconsistent
  • temporary ↔ permanent
  • central ↔ peripheral
  • precise ↔ vague
  • plausible ↔ implausible
  • relevant ↔ irrelevant

But antonyms are not always symmetrical. Hot and cold are simple. Important does not have one perfect opposite. Insignificant, minor, trivial, irrelevant each expresses a different kind of “not important”.

所以反义词也要学边界,不要只学“正面一个,反面一个”。

19. Build category networks | 用“类别”建立可搜索词汇

Category organisation makes retrieval easier because your brain can search by concept.

Example: evidence quality.

  • strong evidence
  • compelling evidence
  • robust evidence
  • conclusive evidence
  • limited evidence
  • weak evidence
  • mixed evidence
  • anecdotal evidence
  • empirical evidence
  • circumstantial evidence

Now category learning and collocation learning reinforce each other.

高级词汇本可以按“功能类别”建立页面:证据、风险、变化、因果、限制、确定性、评价、时间、比较、增长、下降、责任、决策。

20. Use semantic maps carefully | 语义图不是越复杂越好

A mind map can help, but decorative complexity can become a distraction. Every branch should answer a useful question.

risk 为中心,可以画:

  • Types: financial, operational, reputational, safety, strategic
  • Verbs: identify, assess, manage, mitigate, reduce, transfer, accept
  • Adjectives: significant, material, unacceptable, manageable, residual
  • Related nouns: threat, hazard, vulnerability, exposure, uncertainty
  • Frames: risk of doing; risk that…; expose somebody to risk

Every branch changes what you can do with the word. That is a useful network.

如果语义图只是画得很漂亮,却没有提高理解、提取或使用,就删掉装饰。

21. The FENCE expansion method | FENCE 词汇扩展法

Use eduKate’s FENCE principle: increase complexity in controlled layers.

FenceWhat to addExample: respond
F0diagnose current knowledgeCan I use respond accurately?
F1core meaningreply or react
F2word familyresponse, respondent, responsive
F3collocationrespond quickly, respond to criticism
F4phrase framesin response to; a positive response to
F5contrastrespond vs react vs reply
F6registerformal/neutral routes
F7retrievalproduce without notes
F8transferuse in email, essay, conversation

You do not need to complete every fence in one sitting. A word can deepen over weeks as you meet it again.

词汇深度不是一次“做完”。真正自然的学习方式是:每次重遇,增加一层。

22. Repeated encounters should add new information | 每次重遇,都尽量增加一个新连接

First encounter: you learn constraint means a limitation.

Second encounter: you notice budget constraint.

Third encounter: you meet time constraints.

Fourth encounter: you see operate under severe constraints.

Fifth encounter: you compare constraint with limitation, restriction and bottleneck.

Sixth encounter: you use it in your own work: “The main constraint is not cost but available staff.”

The word did not simply repeat. It accumulated structure.

这就是高质量重复:不是每次只重新看中文意思,而是每次让网络长一点。

23. Use a phrase-first dictionary routine | 高级查词先找“短语行为”

When you look up a familiar advanced word, use this routine:

  1. Read the English definition.
  2. Check pronunciation and stress.
  3. Scan the common senses.
  4. Look for grammar information.
  5. Find the family forms.
  6. Collect two verb collocations.
  7. Collect two adjective/noun collocations.
  8. Collect one phrase frame.
  9. Check one close synonym.
  10. Read three authentic examples.
  11. Write one personal sentence.
  12. Close the dictionary and retrieve the network.

Use strong learner dictionaries such as Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary and Cambridge Dictionary. The useful information is not only the first definition.

高级查词的重点从“它是什么意思”升级成“它通常怎样行动”。

24. Use the Oxford 5000 to choose headwords | 用 Oxford 5000 选择值得做深的熟词

The Oxford 5000 can serve as a prioritisation map. Do not use it as a checklist that must be memorised once. Use it to identify high-value headwords worth expanding into networks.

例如你看到 allocate。不要只打勾“认识”。做一次深度扩展:

  • allocate resources
  • allocate funds
  • allocate time
  • allocate responsibility
  • allocation of resources
  • resource allocation
  • budget allocation
  • allocate X to Y
  • allocate X among groups

One high-value headword becomes a compact network that may recur in education, business, government, project management and personal planning.

25. Use the Oxford Phrase List to find ready-made routes | 用 Oxford Phrase List 找高价值词块

The Oxford Phrase List reminds advanced learners that phrase knowledge belongs inside vocabulary knowledge.

When you meet a useful phrase, do not ask only, “What does this mean?” Ask:

  • Which part is fixed?
  • Which part can vary?
  • What function does it perform?
  • What register is it?
  • What words commonly fill the variable slot?
  • Can I use it in another topic?

Example: in light of X.

  • in light of new evidence
  • in light of recent developments
  • in light of the findings
  • in light of these concerns
  • in light of changing conditions

The frame stays stable. The slot changes. That is productive phrase learning.

26. Corpus thinking shows which networks are real | 语料库思维帮助你确认哪些连接真实存在

Learners can invent combinations that seem logical but are uncommon. Corpus-informed dictionaries help because they reflect recurrent real usage.

中文学习者特别容易出现一种情况:每个单词都对,组合却不像英语。原因是你按“意义逻辑”自己拼了一个表达,却没有检查真实英语是否这样组合。

For every important headword, ask corpus-style questions:

  • Which adjective appears frequently before this noun?
  • Which verb usually takes this noun as object?
  • Which preposition commonly follows this adjective?
  • Which phrase frame is frequent in academic writing?
  • Which pattern is common in speech but rare in formal writing?
  • Does the word often appear with negative or positive evaluation?

The goal is not to memorise statistics. The goal is to replace private guessing with evidence about actual usage.

27. Chinese translation should shrink as the network grows | 网络越大,对中文翻译的依赖越小

At the beginning, a Chinese gloss can be efficient. But once the network develops, the English connections become more informative than the translation.

Example: constraint.

Chinese bridge: 限制;约束。

English network:

  • budget constraint
  • time constraint
  • capacity constraint
  • operate under constraints
  • impose constraints on
  • relax a constraint
  • binding constraint
  • constraint vs restriction vs limitation vs bottleneck

The Chinese gloss gets you through the door. The English network tells you how to live in the room.

中文的作用从“主解释”逐渐变成“快速确认”。这正是高级非母语学习者应该发生的变化。

28. Beware false friends created by translation | 小心“翻译制造的假朋友”

Sometimes one Chinese gloss makes two English words look interchangeable.

Example: “经济的/节省的” may lead learners toward economic and economical.

  • economic growth — relating to the economy
  • economic policy — relating to economics/the economy
  • economical car — cheap to operate / not wasteful
  • economical use of space — efficient, avoiding waste

The similar form makes the distinction more dangerous, not less.

再例如:

  • effective = produces the intended result
  • efficient = achieves results with less waste of time/resources
  • efficient does not simply mean “more effective”

高级词汇学习要主动寻找这些“容易混”的词,而不是等错误重复几年才修。

29. Phrase networks improve reading speed | 词块网络会提高阅读速度

When a phrase is familiar as a unit, you do not need to interpret every component separately.

For example:

  • on the basis of
  • in response to
  • with regard to
  • to the extent that
  • in contrast to
  • as opposed to
  • by means of
  • with the exception of

If these are processed as familiar units, more working attention remains available for the argument itself.

所以词块学习并不只是为了“说得像母语者”。它还可以降低阅读处理成本,让你把更多注意力放在思想上。

30. Phrase networks improve listening segmentation | 词块网络帮助你在听力里“切分”英语

Spoken English arrives as a stream. Familiar chunks help the listener recognise boundaries.

当你熟悉:

  • the point is that…
  • what tends to happen is…
  • the reason for this is…
  • that raises the question of…
  • from my perspective…
  • having said that…
  • to put it another way…

you begin to hear larger meaning units rather than a sequence of individual words.

这对中文母语学习者非常重要,因为听力困难有时不是“词不认识”,而是没有把连续声音切成正确单位。

31. Phrase networks improve speaking fluency | 词块网络让口语更快、更稳

Fluent speakers do not invent every sentence from nothing. They reuse conventional frames and adapt them.

Useful advanced frames include:

  • What I mean by X is…
  • The distinction matters because…
  • There are two separate issues here.
  • That depends largely on…
  • I would be cautious about assuming that…
  • The evidence seems to suggest that…
  • A more useful way to frame the problem is…
  • That may be true in one context, but…

These are not scripts to memorise blindly. They are recurring language for recurring thinking moves.

当一个思考动作经常发生,对应的语言框架就值得作为词块学习。

32. Phrase networks improve writing cohesion | 词块网络也能提高写作衔接

Writers need language for logical relationships.

FunctionPhrase routes
Addin addition to; another factor is; furthermore
Contrastby contrast; in contrast to; on the other hand
Qualifyto some extent; under certain conditions; in most cases
Causeas a result of; contribute to; give rise to
Evidencethe evidence suggests; be consistent with; provide support for
Limitone limitation is; this does not necessarily mean; subject to
Returntaken together; overall; this suggests that

These patterns help the reader see the route through the argument.

高级写作的词汇,不只是“名词和形容词更难”,也包括大量负责组织逻辑的短语。

33. Word-family knowledge helps you decode unfamiliar vocabulary | 词族知识能帮助你猜陌生词

If you know stable, stability is easier. If you know interpret, misinterpretation becomes analysable. If you know productive, productivity is less opaque.

Suppose you meet counterproductive.

  • productive = producing a useful result
  • counter- = against / producing the opposite direction
  • counterproductive = having the opposite of the intended effect

You can predict enough meaning to keep reading, then confirm later.

这会减少查词次数,提高阅读连续性。构词法的价值不是让你“百分之百猜对”,而是让陌生词不再完全陌生。

34. Word families improve paraphrasing | 词族会增强改写能力

Original:

The team evaluated the proposal carefully.

Possible transformations:

  • The team conducted a careful evaluation of the proposal.
  • The proposal was carefully evaluated by the team.
  • The team used clear evaluation criteria.
  • Further evaluation may be required.

The learner is not replacing words randomly. The learner is changing grammatical architecture while preserving the idea.

这才是高级 paraphrasing:不是“同义词替换”,而是“词族 + 句法”一起重建。

35. Word families help precision—but can also create false confidence | 词族也会制造“看起来会”的错觉

A learner sees economy → economic → economical and assumes the family relationship makes usage obvious. It does not.

  • economic growth
  • economic policy
  • economic conditions
  • economical vehicle
  • economical use of materials

Related form does not mean interchangeable meaning.

同一家族内部,也可能发生意义分化。高级学习必须同时学“关系”和“边界”。

36. Polysemy can create multiple phrase networks from one word | 多义词会长出多张词块网

Consider address.

Address as location | 地址

  • home address
  • email address
  • business address

Address as speaking to people | 向…讲话

  • address the audience
  • address the committee

Address as dealing with a problem | 处理问题

  • address a concern
  • address the issue
  • address the underlying cause
  • address a gap in knowledge

The same spelling produces different networks. This is why “address = 地址” is only one entrance.

高级词汇学习不要把多义词拆成一堆互不相关的中文翻译。尽量找出核心概念和常见结构,再按语境组织。

37. Phrasal verbs deserve their own networks | 短语动词也要按网络学

Advanced learners sometimes avoid phrasal verbs because they appear informal or difficult. That creates unnatural English. Many phrasal verbs are common and neutral.

carry 为例:

  • carry out research
  • carry out an assessment
  • carry out repairs
  • carry on working
  • carry over into another context

Or set:

  • set out a plan
  • set up a system
  • set aside time
  • set back progress
  • set off a reaction

Do not learn the particle alone. Learn the whole expression, typical objects and register.

短语动词不是“动词 + 小词 = 猜意思”。很多必须作为完整词汇单位来学。

38. Idioms come later than high-value phrase networks | 高频词块优先于低频习语

Idioms can enrich comprehension and conversation, but learners often overestimate their importance because they are colourful.

如果你还没有稳定掌握 take into account, in response to, raise concerns about, be consistent with, result in,却每天背十个很少用的成语,学习顺序可能不理想。

Priority should usually be:

  1. high-frequency collocations
  2. useful phrase frames
  3. phrasal verbs relevant to your goals
  4. academic/professional bundles where needed
  5. common idioms
  6. rare colourful idioms

高级不是“成语密度高”。高级是“选择合适”。

39. Build phrase networks by topic | 按话题建立词块网络

Topic networks are especially useful for speaking and writing.

Example: education.

  • develop a skill
  • acquire knowledge
  • close a learning gap
  • provide feedback
  • track progress
  • build fluency
  • apply knowledge
  • transfer learning
  • design a curriculum
  • allocate study time
  • identify misconceptions
  • strengthen foundations

Then connect them to reasoning frames:

  • One reason students struggle is…
  • A more effective approach would be…
  • The main limitation of this method is…
  • The evidence suggests that…
  • This may be particularly useful when…

Now the network supports an actual conversation, not merely a quiz.

40. Build phrase networks by function | 按功能建立词块网络

Function networks transfer across topics, which makes them especially powerful.

FunctionPhrase network
Defineby X, I mean…; X refers to…; can be defined as…
Narrowmore specifically…; in this context…; the narrower point is…
Qualifyto some extent…; under certain conditions…; this does not necessarily mean…
Comparecompared with…; in contrast to…; broadly similar to…
Concedealthough…; while it is true that…; admittedly…
Challengethis assumes that…; the difficulty with this view is…; this overlooks…
Concludetaken together…; overall…; this suggests that…

A function network can be reused in science, history, business, education, politics, technology or daily discussion.

所以如果学习时间有限,优先建立“高迁移功能词块”通常比背大量专题生词更划算。

41. Retrieval should reconstruct the network, not just the word | 提取练习要把“网络”一起拿出来

A weak flashcard asks:

mitigate = ?

A stronger retrieval card asks:

  • What does mitigate mean in simple English?
  • Give two collocations.
  • What noun belongs to the family?
  • How is mitigate different from prevent?
  • Use it in one sentence about risk.

Now the learner retrieves structure, not a translation pair.

高级提取练习不要只问“中文是什么”。要让大脑把搭配、边界、词族和使用场景一起找出来。

42. Use generation before explanation | 先猜、先造,再看答案

Before checking a dictionary, try to generate.

  1. What noun might come from this verb?
  2. What adjective might come from this noun?
  3. Which collocations can you already produce?
  4. Which preposition do you think follows it?
  5. What near-synonym might contrast with it?
  6. Now check.

The prediction creates a diagnostic. If you are wrong, the correction becomes memorable because it replaces an explicit hypothesis.

先做一次“有风险的猜测”,再查答案,比直接复制更能暴露真实知识结构。

43. Use sentence transformation to activate families | 用句型转换激活词族

Target family: vary / variation / variable / varied.

  • Prices vary considerably across regions.
  • There is considerable variation in prices across regions.
  • Price is a key variable in the model.
  • The sample included people from varied backgrounds.

Now change topic:

  • performance varies across students
  • variation in performance
  • performance as a variable
  • students with varied experience

One family moves through multiple sentence roles and domains.

这比单独背四个词更强,因为你在训练“词族如何改变句子”。

44. Use substitution tables for controlled variation | 用替换表建立可控变化

Start with a frame:

The evidence suggests that the policy may have a significant effect.

SlotChoices
Evidence verbsuggests / indicates / demonstrates / provides support for
Strengthmay / is likely to / appears to
Effect adjectivesignificant / substantial / limited / measurable
Effect nouneffect / impact / influence

The exercise is not “make random sentences”. The learner compares meaning shifts.

这种替换表很适合中文母语高级学习者,因为它让“相近选择之间的边界”变得可见。

45. Use one topic, three registers | 同一个话题,用三种语域表达

Topic: a plan is delayed.

RegisterExample
ConversationalWe’re running behind, so we’ll need a bit more time.
Neutral professionalThe project is behind schedule, and we need additional time to complete the next phase.
Formal analyticalImplementation has been delayed by capacity constraints, requiring a revision to the current timeline.

Now notice how the phrase networks change: run behind, behind schedule, implementation has been delayed; a bit more time, additional time, revision to the timeline.

高级词汇不仅是“更多表达”,还要知道每组表达适合什么场景。

46. Use one concept, three audiences | 同一个概念,对三种听众说

Concept: cognitive load.

  • Child: Your brain can only hold a few new things at once, so too many instructions can make learning harder.
  • Parent: When a task demands too many new decisions at the same time, working memory becomes overloaded and performance falls.
  • Specialist: Excessive extraneous cognitive load can consume limited working-memory resources that would otherwise support schema acquisition.

The concept remains. The lexical network changes with audience.

这是一种非常高级的词汇能力:不是“只会一个最难版本”,而是可以根据对象主动改变词汇密度和专业度。

47. Build academic phrase networks by reasoning job | 学术词块按“推理任务”组织

Oxford’s OPAL resources are useful for academic vocabulary, but the most productive learning move is to organise academic language by what it does.

Reasoning jobUseful network
Introduce evidenceevidence indicates; findings suggest; data show; results provide support for
Qualify evidencelimited evidence; mixed evidence; should be interpreted cautiously
State limitationone limitation is; subject to several constraints; cannot establish whether
Compare studiesconsistent with; contrasts with; broadly similar to; differs substantially from
Claim carefullymay indicate; appears to suggest; is likely to; cannot rule out
Explain mechanismmay operate through; contributes to; is mediated by; is associated with

These phrases teach scientific and academic caution as well as vocabulary.

真正的学术词汇能力,不是“把普通词换成大词”,而是学会控制证据、因果、限制和确定程度。

48. Build professional phrase networks around action | 职场词块按“行动”组织

Action jobPhrase network
Planningdefine scope; allocate resources; establish priorities; set a timeline
Riskidentify risk; assess exposure; mitigate risk; address vulnerabilities
Decisionevaluate options; reach a decision; defer a decision; reverse a decision
Executionimplement the plan; monitor progress; resolve issues; revise estimates
Responsibilityassign ownership; clarify responsibility; be accountable for
Reviewevaluate outcomes; identify lessons; revise the process; document findings

Now vocabulary becomes a workflow language.

这也是为什么职场英语很适合网络化学习:真实工作本身就是一连串重复出现的功能动作。

49. Build a personal error network | 把自己的错误也做成网络

Advanced learners often repeat a small group of lexical errors. Do not record them as isolated corrections. Group them.

Example cluster: Chinese direct-translation collocation.

Weak versionNatural repairNetwork
make a conclusionreach / draw a conclusionconclusion collocations
open the computerturn on / start the computerdevice-action collocations
learn knowledgeacquire / gain knowledgeknowledge collocations
very conveniencevery convenient / highly convenientword-family + grammar
give me many informationsgive me a lot of informationcountability + phrase pattern

Once errors are grouped, one repair lesson can fix several sentences.

这就是“错误语料库”的价值:你不再每次只修一句,而是修一个重复机制。

50. Use spaced network retrieval | 间隔复习时,不只复习单词

Day 1: learn allocate.

Day 2: retrieve three collocations.

Day 4: retrieve the noun allocation and build two phrases.

Day 7: compare allocate with assign and distribute.

Day 14: use the family in a work or study paragraph.

Day 30: speak for one minute about how you allocate time or resources.

Spacing now deepens different parts of the network instead of repeating the same card.

这会比“每次都看 allocate = 分配”更有价值。

51. Use mixed retrieval to test flexibility | 混合提取测试真正灵活性

  • Give the noun form.
  • Give the adjective form.
  • Complete the collocation.
  • Repair an unnatural phrase.
  • Choose between two near-synonyms.
  • Change formal language into conversational English.
  • Change one sentence from noun-heavy to verb-heavy.
  • Use the word in a different topic.

Mixed retrieval is harder because the learner cannot predict which route will be needed. That is closer to real language use.

真实英语不会提前告诉你:“下一题考词族”。所以高级训练要逐渐取消这种提示。

52. One word, one week | 一个词,可以学一周

Choose maintain.

DayNetwork expansion
1core senses: keep something at a level/state; continue to claim
2collocations: maintain standards, maintain control, maintain contact
3family: maintenance; maintainable in technical contexts
4discourse: maintain that…; maintain a distinction between…
5contrast: maintain vs preserve vs sustain vs retain
6production: paragraph using two senses
7no-notes retrieval + new-topic transfer

One week, one familiar word, many new routes.

这就是高级词汇学习最反直觉的地方:有时候“学得慢一点”,反而真正前进得更快。

53. Five headwords can become fifty routes | 五个熟词可以变成五十条路

Choose five:

  • analyse
  • assume
  • respond
  • maintain
  • allocate

For each, build:

  • 2 family forms
  • 3 collocations
  • 1 phrase frame
  • 1 contrast
  • 1 personal example
  • 1 transfer example

Five headwords now generate around fifty meaningful connections.

这就是“网络化词汇”比“孤立词表”强的地方:数量没有爆炸,连接却大幅增加。

54. A 45-minute word-family and phrase-network session | 45 分钟词族与词块训练

TimeTask
0–8 minRead one serious text and mark 3 familiar-but-underused words.
8–15 minBuild useful family forms.
15–23 minCollect collocations and dependent prepositions.
23–30 minBuild one phrase frame and one contrast set.
30–35 minClose notes and retrieve.
35–42 minUse the network in speaking or writing.
42–45 minRecord the weak link and schedule return.

Three headwords can be enough. Depth is the goal.

高级学习不要让“今天只做了三个词”产生焦虑。看网络是否真的变密。

55. A seven-day phrase-network challenge | 七天词块网络挑战

DayMission
1Choose 5 headwords and build basic families.
2Add 3 collocations to each.
3Add grammar patterns / dependent prepositions.
4Add near-synonym contrasts.
5Add phrase frames and one register comparison.
6Use all five networks in speaking and writing.
7Retrieve without notes; remove weak or low-value branches.

Do not keep every branch just because you found it. A useful network is selective.

词汇网络不是百科全书。只保留与你的真实阅读、写作、学习和工作有价值的路线。

56. A 12-week progression from headwords to flexible vocabulary | 12 周从熟词到灵活词汇

WeeksFocusEvidence of progress
1–2word-family awarenessfaster recognition of related forms
3–4collocation and dependent prepositionsfewer unnatural combinations
5–6phrase frames and lexical chunksfaster speaking/writing starts
7–8contrast sets and registermore precise word choice
9–10academic/professional phrase networksstronger formal output
11–12retrieval, transfer and consolidationnetworks survive new topics

The objective is not to finish the dictionary. The objective is to change how you learn every future word.

12 周以后,你最重要的收获应该不是“一本更厚的词汇本”,而是一种新的学习习惯。

57. The first weak link for network vocabulary | 网络化词汇的第一个弱点

SymptomLikely first weak linkRepair
I know one word form only.word-family depthfamily expansion + sentence transformation
I know families but misuse them.meaning boundarydictionary examples + contrast
I know words but collocations sound translated.phrase networkcollocation harvest from authentic texts
I forget the right preposition.lexical grammarstore whole units

I can use phrases only in one essay topic.transfernew-topic reuse
I use formal chunks in casual conversation.registerthree-register comparison
My notes are huge but I cannot retrieve them.network overloadprune + spaced retrieval

More branches are not always better. A small network you can use is stronger than a beautiful network you cannot retrieve.

58. How a strong tutor teaches word families and chunks | 高水平导师怎样教词族与词块?

A strong tutor does not present a family as a static table and move on. The tutor makes the learner manipulate it.

  • predict family forms
  • check which forms are actually common
  • compare pronunciation and stress
  • transform sentences across word classes
  • build collocations
  • contrast near-synonyms
  • change register
  • remove support
  • require oral and written retrieval
  • return after a delay
  • test a new topic

This aligns with eduKateSG’s Tutor Classification Model: explanation is only one layer. Advanced learning needs diagnosis, modelling, feedback, route design and transfer testing.

高级导师的价值,不是“知道更多难词”,而是能把学生已有词汇重新组织成更强的系统。

59. How this lesson connects to eduKate’s canonical owners | 本课怎样连接 eduKate 现有主页面

This lesson owns the Mandarin-speaking learner route for turning familiar vocabulary into word-family and phrase networks. It does not replace the specialist mechanism pages already published across the eduKate ecosystem.

The ownership boundary stays clear: existing pages explain mechanisms; this series turns those mechanisms into a Chinese-supported advanced vocabulary progression.

60. Recommended books and apex reference tools | 推荐书籍与优质工具

Use books as tools, not as trophies. Diagnose the missing network, then choose the resource.

61. SEO language map | 本课关键词范围

This lesson naturally serves advanced English vocabulary, English word families, word family vocabulary, lexical chunks, English collocations, phrase networks, vocabulary networks, C1 vocabulary, C2 vocabulary, morphology for English learners, prefixes and suffixes, dependent prepositions, English phrase patterns, advanced vocabulary for Chinese speakers, Mandarin English vocabulary, Oxford 5000, Oxford Phrase List, English Collocations in Use Advanced, English Vocabulary in Use Advanced, academic vocabulary, professional English vocabulary, 高级英语词汇, 英语词族, 英语词块, 英语搭配, 构词法, 词根词缀, 固定介词搭配, 英语短语学习, C1 英语词汇, C2 英语词汇, 中文母语英语学习 and 高级英语怎么学.

Keywords are routes into the lesson, not content to repeat mechanically. Search intent should lead to useful instruction.

62. Your assignment | 本课作业

Choose five familiar words:

  • analyse
  • assume
  • respond
  • maintain
  • allocate

For each word, create:

  1. one simple English definition
  2. one short Chinese bridge
  3. two useful word-family forms
  4. three natural collocations
  5. one dependent-preposition or grammar pattern if relevant
  6. one phrase frame
  7. one near-synonym contrast
  8. one personal sentence
  9. one spoken use
  10. one new-topic use tomorrow

Then close the page and reconstruct the network from the headword alone.

如果你能从一个熟词重新长出整张网,这个词才真正开始属于你。

63. The final rule | 最后一条规则

Do not learn a word as a point when English uses it as a network.

英语把词用成网络,你就不要把它只学成一个点。

A headword gives you entry. A word family gives you grammatical flexibility. Collocations give you natural combinations. Phrase frames give you speed. Contrast sets give you precision. Register gives you social control. Retrieval gives you access. Transfer gives you real ownership.

词头给你入口;词族给你句法灵活度;搭配给你自然度;词块给你速度;对比组给你精度;语域给你场景控制;提取给你可用性;迁移才让它真正成为你的语言。

That is how one familiar word becomes advanced vocabulary.

这就是熟词怎样变成高级词汇。
