How to Learn Advanced English Vocabulary (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.001 | Build Lexical Depth Before Chasing Rare Words | 第001课:先建立词汇深度,再追求难词

If you already know thousands of English words, the next breakthrough may not come from learning another thousand.
如果你已经认识几千个英文单词,下一次真正的突破,可能并不是再背一千个。

Imagine this. You are reading an English article and you understand almost every sentence. You see significant, issue, approach, maintain, account, critical, address, substantial. None of these words is new. Then somebody asks you to explain the article in English. Suddenly your vocabulary shrinks. You say big, good, bad, thing, problem, make, do, very. You know more language than you can reach.

想象一下:你在读一篇英文文章,几乎每一句都看得懂。significant、issue、approach、maintain、account、critical、address、substantial 这些词你都认识。可是有人请你不用看原文,用英语解释文章内容时,你的词汇突然“缩水”了。你又回到 big、good、bad、thing、problem、make、do、very。

Nothing mysterious happened. Your vocabulary did not disappear. The problem is that recognition and control are different achievements.

这不是“词汇量突然变小”。真正的问题是:看得懂一个词,和真正控制这个词,是两种不同的能力。

This first lesson establishes the central rule of the entire series:

At advanced level, vocabulary growth is increasingly a depth problem, an access problem and a choice problem—not only a quantity problem.

到了高级阶段,词汇学习越来越不是单纯的“数量问题”,而是“深度问题、提取问题和选择问题”。

This lesson is written for Mandarin Chinese speakers who already have substantial English knowledge and want stronger C1–C2 vocabulary for serious reading, writing, study, work and conversation. Chinese is used as a bridge. The destination is increasingly direct English thinking and English use.

本课面向已经有较强英语基础的普通话学习者。简体中文会帮助你快速理解复杂概念,但最终目标不是让你更依赖翻译,而是让你的英语词汇网络越来越可以独立运行。

1. The false comfort of a large word list | 大词表带来的“虚假安全感”

A long vocabulary list is easy to count. That makes it psychologically attractive. One hundred words this week. Five hundred this month. Ten thousand in a year. Numbers create a feeling of movement.

长词表很容易量化,所以很容易让人产生满足感:这周一百个,这个月五百个,今年一万个。数字看起来像进步。

But vocabulary knowledge is not a warehouse in which every word occupies one identical box. Some words are only vaguely familiar. Some are understood only in one meaning. Some can be recognised in reading but not heard in speech. Some are available in conversation but not formal writing. Some are understood but paired with the wrong preposition. Some are correct but sound unnatural because the collocation is wrong. Some are technically possible yet socially inappropriate for the situation.

词汇知识不是一个“每个词都放在同样盒子里”的仓库。一个词可能只有模糊印象;可能只认识一个意思;可能阅读能认出但听力听不出;可能口语会用但正式写作不会;可能词本身对,却介词错;也可能语法正确,但搭配不自然;甚至可能语言上没错,却不适合那个场景。

So the question “How many words do you know?” is useful but incomplete.

A stronger advanced question is:

How many useful things can you reliably do with the words you already know?

你已经认识的词,到底有多少真正可以稳定地为你工作?

The Oxford 5000 is valuable precisely because it helps learners prioritise high-value B2–C1 vocabulary rather than chase random difficult words. The English Vocabulary Profile similarly shows that vocabulary develops by level through meanings, phrases and uses—not merely through a longer alphabetical list. Cambridge’s English Vocabulary in Use: Advanced is organised around vocabulary in context and repeated use at C1–C2, not around a competition for obscurity.

这给我们一个很重要的高级学习原则:先优先学习高价值语言,再逐渐增加低频和专业语言。难,不等于值钱;长,不等于高级;少见,也不等于表达更好。

2. Breadth, depth and access | 广度、深度、提取

Advanced vocabulary becomes easier to understand if we separate three dimensions.

DimensionQuestionTypical learner mistakeAdvanced target
BreadthHow many words and phrases do I know?Chasing low-frequency words too early.Expand strategically around useful language.
DepthHow much do I know about each item?Stopping at one Chinese translation.Know meanings, family, patterns, collocations, register and connotation.
AccessCan I retrieve and use it when needed?Confusing recognition with mastery.Produce accurately in speaking and writing under real conditions.

词汇广度回答“我认识多少”;词汇深度回答“每个词我到底知道多少”;词汇提取回答“需要时我能不能把它拿出来”。

A learner can be strong in one dimension and weak in another. You may have broad reading vocabulary but poor productive access. You may have excellent specialist vocabulary in finance or engineering but weak conversational range. You may know many formal words but have limited control of phrasal verbs and everyday chunks. Diagnosis matters because the repair is different.

有人阅读词汇很广,但主动输出很弱;有人专业领域词汇很强,日常英语却不够自然;有人正式词汇很多,却不会常见短语动词和口语词块。问题不同,训练方法也必须不同。

3. A familiar word can still be an advanced lesson | 熟词也可以是高级课程

Take the word issue. Most advanced learners know it. That is exactly why it is useful for diagnosis.

用 issue 做例子。大多数高级学习者都“认识”这个词,所以它特别适合测试你是否真的有词汇深度。

  • an important issue — a matter or topic that needs attention
  • a technical issue — a technical problem or difficulty
  • the central issue — the main matter under discussion
  • raise an issue — introduce a matter for discussion
  • address an issue — deal with or respond to it
  • resolve an issue — solve it
  • issue a statement — formally release or publish something
  • issue a warning — formally give a warning
  • the latest issue of a magazine — an edition of a periodical

Now ask yourself:

  • Can I hear the noun and verb correctly?
  • Can I distinguish issue from problem, question, concern and matter?
  • Do I know which verbs naturally combine with it?
  • Can I use it in a report, a meeting and a conversation?
  • Can I recognise the publication meaning?
  • Can I retrieve raise an issue without first thinking “提出一个问题” in Chinese?

如果只能说“issue = 问题”,那不是“不会这个词”,但词汇深度还很浅。高级学习的机会,恰恰藏在这些熟词里。

This changes the way you study. Instead of asking only, “What new words did I learn today?” ask, “Which familiar words became more useful today?”

不要每天只问:“今天新增了几个词?”再加一个问题:“今天有几个熟词变得更能用了?”

4. The twelve dimensions of lexical depth | 词汇深度的十二个维度

When advanced learners say, “I know this word,” they often mean only one thing: “I recognise its approximate meaning.” We need a richer standard.

No.DimensionExample with significant中文理解
1Spellingsignificant拼写稳定
2Pronunciationcorrect sounds and stress发音与重音
3Core meaningimportant or large enough to matter核心词义
4Multiple sensesimportant; statistically meaningful in technical contexts多义与专业义
5Word familysignificance, significantly, insignificant词族
6Collocationsignificant difference, significant impact, significant increase搭配
7Grammar patternsignificant for/to; significantly affect语法行为
8Registerneutral-formal; common in academic/professional writing语域
9Connotationusually neutral; context determines evaluation感情色彩
10Contrastimportant, substantial, considerable, meaningful, major近义词差别
11Retrievalcan produce it without prompts主动提取
12Transfercan use it in study, work, speech and writing where appropriate迁移能力

No single vocabulary lesson must teach all twelve dimensions equally. But this table changes the learner’s mental model. A word is not a translation pair. It is a small system.

不是每次学词都要把十二项全部做满,但你必须改变对“词”的理解:一个词不是一个翻译对,而是一个小系统。

5. eduKate FENCE 0: diagnose before adding vocabulary | 先诊断,再加词

The eduKate Fencing Method grows language through controlled layers. At advanced level, we begin with a diagnostic fence. Pick ten words you believe you know well. Do not choose rare vocabulary. Choose useful words you meet often.

  • approach
  • account
  • maintain
  • establish
  • critical
  • significant
  • address
  • concern
  • evidence
  • assume

For each word, score yourself from 0 to 2 on each question.

  1. Can I explain the meaning in simple English?
  2. Can I pronounce it confidently?
  3. Can I name at least two useful word-family forms?
  4. Can I give three natural collocations?
  5. Can I distinguish it from one near-synonym?
  6. Do I know whether it is casual, neutral, formal or technical?
  7. Can I use it in one spoken sentence without planning?
  8. Can I use it in one written sentence appropriate to work or study?
  9. Can I recognise a second common meaning if there is one?
  10. Can I still do these things tomorrow without looking?

0 = cannot do it. 1 = partly / slowly / uncertainly. 2 = reliable.

满分不是重点。真正重要的是看你“先在哪里掉下来”。有的人卡在发音,有的人卡在搭配,有的人卡在提取,有的人卡在语域。这就是你的 first weak link。

Do not repair everything at once. Repair the earliest failure that limits the rest.

6. Why rare-word chasing often fails | 为什么“追难词”经常失败?

Rare words can be valuable. A biologist needs biological terminology. A lawyer needs legal language. A serious reader of literature will meet low-frequency vocabulary. The problem is not rarity itself. The problem is poor sequencing.

生僻词当然可以学。专业学习和文学阅读都需要低频词。问题不在“难”,而在学习顺序。

Suppose you have one hour. You could learn fifteen obscure words you may not meet again for months. Or you could deepen five high-value words that appear every week across reading, lectures, reports, meetings and essays. The second option may create more usable language per minute.

如果同样是一小时,你可以背十五个几个月都未必再见的低频词,也可以把五个高价值词从“认识”升级到“会搭配、会变形、会提取、会迁移”。后者常常产生更大的学习回报。

This is an opportunity-cost decision. Advanced learners should increasingly ask:

  • How often will I meet this language?
  • How many situations can it serve?
  • Does it unlock other words or phrases?
  • Can I use it in my field?
  • Does it solve a repeated weakness?
  • Will it improve comprehension, production or both?

真正高级的学习者,不只是“能学难的”,还会判断“什么值得先学”。

7. Frequency is a guide, not a prison | 高频是优先级,不是限制

High-frequency vocabulary deserves attention because it appears repeatedly. Repetition creates more chances to notice, retrieve and refine. But your personal goals matter. A medical researcher, architect, software engineer, finance professional and literature student need different specialised vocabulary beyond the shared core.

高频词值得优先,因为它们反复出现,给你更多机会强化。但词汇学习不能只有一张“所有人一样”的名单。专业目标会改变优先顺序。

A useful advanced vocabulary programme therefore has three layers:

  1. High-value general English — frequent words and phrases with broad transfer.
  2. Academic / professional language — language used for reasoning, evidence, decisions, explanation and argument.
  3. Domain vocabulary — terms and phrases specific to your field or serious interests.

三层都要有,但顺序要合理。核心语言不稳定时,不要让专业词汇制造一种“我英语很高级”的错觉。

8. Mandarin gives you meaning—but not always the English boundary | 中文给你概念,但不一定给你英语的词义边界

Mandarin is an enormous advantage because you already possess concepts, knowledge and reasoning in another language. You do not need to relearn the world. But languages divide the world differently. A Chinese word and an English word may overlap without matching perfectly.

中文是资源,不是障碍。你已经用中文拥有大量概念和世界知识。但是,两种语言对现实的分类方式并不完全一样。

Take “提高”. Depending on context, English might use improve, increase, raise, enhance, boost, strengthen, elevate, upgrade, develop or another verb. These are not interchangeable:

  • improve performance — make performance better
  • increase output — make the quantity larger
  • raise standards — move a standard to a higher level
  • enhance clarity — improve a quality, often formal
  • boost confidence — increase quickly or noticeably, often less formal
  • strengthen an argument — make it more robust
  • upgrade a system — move to a better version or capability
  • develop a skill — grow it over time

If you memorise “提高 = improve”, you have a starting bridge. If you learn the whole contrast set, you begin to see how English classifies improvement.

所以中文翻译的正确作用是“快速接近意义”,不是“永远决定英文选择”。

9. One English word can cross several Chinese translations | 一个英文词也可能跨越多个中文翻译

The reverse is also true. Consider account.

  • a bank account — 账户
  • an eyewitness account — 叙述 / 证词式描述
  • account for the difference — 解释 / 占…比例(取决于结构)
  • take something into account — 考虑到
  • on account of — 因为
  • by all accounts — 据大家所说 / 据各方面说法

If you insist on one Chinese translation, the English word looks chaotic. If you learn the English patterns, the system becomes clearer.

这也是为什么高级阶段不要只制作“英文—中文”双栏词表。对于多义词,真正稳定的单位经常是“词 + 结构 + 语境”。

10. Learn words in families | 从一个词扩展成词族

A word family increases flexibility. If you know only analyse, your sentence architecture is limited. Add analysis, analytical, analytically, analyst, and you can express the same conceptual area through different grammatical roles.

FamilyExamplesUse
analyseanalyse the dataverb action
analysisa detailed analysisnoun concept
analyticalanalytical approachadjective description
analyticallythink analyticallyadverb manner
analystfinancial analystperson / role

词族学习同时提高阅读和写作。阅读时,你更容易识别陌生词形;写作时,你有更多语法选择。

But do not create imaginary words mechanically. Morphology gives clues, not guarantees. Check real usage in a good learner dictionary.

词根词缀是线索,不是数学公式。看到一个词形“理论上可能存在”,不代表真实英语里常用。

11. Collocation is part of the word | 搭配不是附件,而是词的一部分

Many advanced learners have enough words to communicate but still sound translated because the words are combined in improbable ways. This is why advanced-level guidance from the British Council places so much emphasis on collocation.

很多高级学习者不是“词不够”,而是“词不会一起工作”。这就是为什么搭配能力会强烈影响自然度。

Compare the noun evidence:

  • strong evidence
  • compelling evidence
  • conclusive evidence
  • growing evidence
  • limited evidence
  • empirical evidence
  • anecdotal evidence
  • provide evidence
  • gather evidence
  • examine the evidence
  • the evidence suggests…
  • there is little evidence to support…

One headword opens many routes. Each route carries slightly different meaning and register.

所以高级词汇本不要只写 evidence = 证据。至少记录几组真正会反复使用的“动词 + evidence”“形容词 + evidence”“完整句型”。

For the full mechanism, route to eduKateSengkang’s canonical page How Collocation Turns Vocabulary Knowledge Into Natural, Precise English. This lesson uses collocation as one dimension of lexical depth rather than duplicating that owner.

12. Grammar lives inside vocabulary | 语法也住在词汇里面

Vocabulary and grammar are not separate boxes. Many words carry preferred grammatical patterns.

  • responsible for doing something
  • capable of doing something
  • contribute to something
  • prevent somebody from doing something
  • insist on doing something
  • accuse somebody of doing something
  • provide somebody with something
  • distinguish A from B
  • regard A as B

If you memorise only the headword, you may repeatedly produce grammar errors even though you “know” the vocabulary.

高级阶段,很多所谓“语法错误”其实是词汇模式没学完整。例如你认识 responsible,却没把 responsible for 当成一个整体储存。

When you learn a verb, adjective or noun, ask: What usually follows it?

每学一个动词、形容词或名词,都问一句:它后面通常接什么结构?

13. Synonyms are not upgrade buttons | 同义词不是“升级按钮”

A common advanced-learner mistake is to write a clear sentence and then use a thesaurus to replace ordinary words with more impressive ones. This often damages precision.

一种很常见的“伪高级写法”是:先写一句正常英语,再打开同义词词典,把普通词全部换成更难的词。结果通常不是更高级,而是更不自然。

Consider change:

  • change — broad neutral word
  • adjust — make a small alteration
  • modify — alter part of something, often formal/technical
  • transform — change substantially in form or character
  • revise — change after review, common for plans, estimates, texts
  • restructure — change the organisation or arrangement
  • convert — change from one form/system/use to another
  • shift — move position, emphasis or tendency

These are not decorations around the word change. They classify different mechanisms of change.

近义词学习的目标不是“换词”,而是“分类”。你能看见更细的区别,才会选择更准确的词。

14. Connotation changes what the listener thinks you mean | 感情色彩会改变听者对你的判断

Dictionary definitions often compress social meaning. Compare:

  • confident vs arrogant
  • persistent vs stubborn
  • economical vs cheap
  • curious vs nosy
  • slim vs skinny
  • assertive vs aggressive

The factual territory overlaps. The evaluation changes.

中文里有时会用一个大概意思覆盖这些词,但英语使用者会感受到态度差别。高级词汇能力包括这种“人际意义”的控制。

Use the canonical mechanism page How Connotation Changes Meaning Beyond Dictionary Definitions when you need deeper work on connotation.

15. Register: the best word depends on where you are | 最好的词取决于你在哪里说

An advanced learner does not sound formal all the time. An advanced learner controls register.

高级,不是一直正式。高级,是会切换。

MeaningConversationalNeutralFormal / academic / professional
beginkick offstartcommence / initiate
showpoint outshowindicate / demonstrate
helpgive a handhelpassist / facilitate / support
useuseuseemploy / utilise in narrower contexts
fixsort outfixresolve / rectify / remediate depending on context

Notice that the “formal” column does not automatically win. If you say commence eating your noodles to a friend, you have selected a more formal word but a worse sentence.

所以不要建立“简单词 = 低级;难词 = 高级”的错误阶梯。正确模型是:合适 = 高级。

16. Pronunciation is lexical knowledge | 发音本身就是词汇知识

If a word exists only as spelling in your head, it may fail in listening and speaking. Advanced vocabulary therefore includes a sound representation.

如果一个词在脑中只有“拼写”,没有稳定声音,它在听力和口语里就可能断掉。

  • listen to dictionary audio
  • notice word stress
  • say the word inside a phrase, not only alone
  • notice stress changes in word families
  • record yourself in a real sentence
  • compare your version with a reliable model

For example, word-family knowledge becomes much stronger when the learner notices that pronunciation may shift across related forms. The family is semantic, grammatical and phonological.

词族不只是“拼写变形”,还包括发音、重音和句子节奏的变化。

17. A dictionary is not a translation machine | 高级词典不是翻译机器

At advanced level, the first definition may be the least interesting thing on the dictionary page. A strong learner dictionary gives you grammar labels, countability, pronunciation, example sentences, patterns, collocations, register information and multiple senses.

高级阶段查词,真正有价值的往往不是第一行中文意思,而是后面的用法信息。

Use Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary or Cambridge Dictionary with a fixed routine:

  1. Read the English definition.
  2. Listen to the pronunciation.
  3. Check stress.
  4. Check part of speech.
  5. Check countability for nouns.
  6. Check transitive/intransitive information for verbs where relevant.
  7. Read more than the first sense.
  8. Notice grammar patterns and prepositions.
  9. Collect two or three collocations.
  10. Read several examples.
  11. Check register labels.
  12. Look at related words.
  13. Write one sentence connected to your real life, study or work.
  14. Close the page and retrieve the phrase later.

这个流程会比“输入英文 → 看中文 → 关闭词典”慢一点,但高级词汇正是从这种额外信息里长出来。

18. Learn to notice the second meaning | 高级阅读最值得抓的,常常是“熟词新义”

When reading, completely unknown words attract attention. But advanced learners often gain more from familiar words used in unfamiliar ways.

完全陌生的难词很容易吸引注意力。可是高级阅读真正高价值的发现,常常是:“这个词我认识,但原来还可以这样用。”

Consider position:

  • physical position
  • job position
  • social or strategic position
  • a position in an argument
  • be in a position to do something
  • position a product in a market
  • position yourself for future growth

The learner who already knows “position = 位置” has not finished. The advanced task is to map the common semantic extensions and patterns.

所以阅读时可以使用四类标记:

  • N — new word, genuinely unfamiliar
  • S — second/new sense of a familiar word
  • C — useful collocation
  • R — register or rhetorical choice worth noticing

Do not underline everything. Mark what can change your future English.

19. Corpus thinking: ask what English actually does | 语料库思维:不要只问“可不可以”,还要问“英语通常怎么做”

Advanced learners often produce sentences that are grammatical but improbable. A corpus—a large collection of real language—helps reveal typical combinations. You do not need specialist linguistic training to use corpus thinking.

高级学习者常见一种状态:句子语法没错,但母语者不太会这样说。语料库思维就是用大量真实英语来检查“常不常见、通常和谁搭配、在哪种文体出现”。

  • Does this adjective normally modify this noun?
  • Which verb usually comes before this noun?
  • Which preposition follows this adjective?
  • Is this phrase common in speech or mostly academic writing?
  • Does this word tend to occur in negative contexts?
  • Which of two similar phrases is more conventional?
  • What words repeatedly appear within a few words of my target?

This is how vocabulary study moves from “dictionary possibility” to “real-language probability”.

高级英语的一个重要转变,就是从“这句话理论上可不可以”升级到“真实英语里通常怎么表达”。

20. Recognition is cheap; retrieval is expensive | 识别容易,提取困难

Recognition gives you the answer and asks whether it looks familiar. Retrieval removes the answer and asks your brain to reconstruct it.

看到答案再说“我认识”,成本很低。真正难的是没有答案时把语言找回来。

This is why eduKateSengkang’s How Retrieval Practice Works matters to vocabulary. The practical vocabulary version is simple:

  • see the Chinese concept → produce the best English phrase
  • see the English definition → produce the word
  • see the headword → produce three collocations
  • hear the word → spell and explain it
  • see the noun → produce the verb/adjective family
  • see a neutral sentence → reformulate it formally
  • see a formal sentence → make it conversational
  • receive a topic → use five target expressions without notes

每次在看答案之前,让大脑先搜索。那几秒钟的不舒服,往往正是学习发生的地方。

21. The vocabulary ladder: see → know → retrieve → choose → use → transfer | 词汇能力阶梯

Use this ladder to describe the state of a word.

StageQuestion中文
1. SeeHave I encountered it before?见过
2. KnowCan I understand its meaning here?理解
3. RetrieveCan I recall it without seeing it?提取
4. ChooseCan I select it instead of a near-synonym when appropriate?选择
5. UseCan I produce it naturally with correct patterns?使用
6. TransferCan I use it in a new topic, genre or situation?迁移

A flashcard can help move a word from Stage 1 to Stage 3. It usually cannot complete Stages 4–6 by itself.

单词卡有价值,但它不是完整系统。它可以帮助识别和提取,却不一定自动教会你“什么时候选这个词、怎么自然搭配、能不能换场景继续用”。

22. Spacing: return when the word is beginning to disappear | 在词开始变模糊时回来

Immediate repetition feels productive because everything is still warm in memory. But durable vocabulary needs delayed return. Cambridge’s advanced vocabulary guidance explicitly recommends revisiting material repeatedly rather than relying on a single encounter.

刚学完马上重复,会让你觉得“太简单了,我已经会了”。真正的测试是延迟之后还能不能提取。

ReturnTaskWhat changes
10 minutesrecall meaning + one collocationinitial retrieval
1 daywrite a new sentencereconstruction
3 dayscontrast with a near-synonymprecision
7 daysuse in two-minute speaking taskproductive access
14 daysuse in a different topictransfer
30 daystest without notesdurability

This is not a sacred calendar. Difficult words may need more returns. Easy words may need fewer. The principle is what matters: return after time has passed and make the brain reconstruct.

时间表可以调整。核心不变:隔一段时间回来,让大脑重新建立路线。

23. Interleave instead of drilling one type forever | 不要永远只练同一种题

If you practise twenty items in exactly the same format, performance can look excellent because the task is predictable. Advanced vocabulary needs mixed decisions.

如果二十道题都是同一种格式,你会越来越熟悉“题型”,但不一定真正更会用词。

  • definition → word
  • word → collocation
  • sentence → choose between synonyms
  • formal → neutral reformulation
  • Chinese idea → natural English phrase
  • wrong collocation → repair
  • audio → identify word
  • topic prompt → spontaneous use

Mixed practice feels harder because the brain must first identify what kind of decision is required. That difficulty is useful when the goal is flexible performance.

高级词汇不是“把一种题练到很熟”,而是让同一个词在不同任务里仍然可用。

24. The Four Strands test | 四条学习通道是否平衡?

I. S. P. Nation’s Four Strands framework is useful because it stops vocabulary study from becoming only deliberate memorisation. A balanced programme includes meaning-focused input, meaning-focused output, language-focused learning and fluency development.

StrandVocabulary versionExample
Meaning-focused inputmeet vocabulary while understanding messagesarticles, books, lectures, interviews
Meaning-focused outputuse vocabulary to communicate real meaningdiscussion, explanation, writing
Language-focused learningdeliberately study form and useword families, collocation, dictionary work
Fluency developmentmake known language faster and easier to accessrepeated speaking, timed summaries, familiar-topic writing

如果你的词汇学习只有“背单词”,四条通道里只跑了一条。高级能力需要把词送进真实理解、真实表达和流利度训练。

25. Reading should grow vocabulary without destroying reading | 阅读要长词汇,但不要把阅读拆碎

Some learners stop at every unknown word. After twenty minutes they have looked up fifteen items and forgotten the article. That is dictionary practice, not reading.

有些学习者每遇到一个生词就停下来查。二十分钟后查了十五个词,却不知道文章到底在说什么。那不是阅读,而是“词典练习”。

Use a two-pass system.

Pass 1: meaning first | 第一遍先保住意思

  • keep reading while the main argument remains clear
  • infer low-impact unknown words
  • mark but do not immediately research everything
  • notice repeated unfamiliar items

Pass 2: lexical harvest | 第二遍收词

  • select 3–8 genuinely useful items
  • prioritise repeated phrases
  • notice familiar words used in new senses
  • record collocations rather than isolated words
  • check register where relevant
  • retrieve the items after closing the text

The goal is not to mine every stone from the mountain. It is to keep the journey while collecting the pieces that will improve future journeys.

阅读的第一任务仍然是理解。词汇学习应该寄生在真实阅读上,而不是把真实阅读完全拆毁。

26. Read one strong text four times | 一篇好文章可以读四次

You do not always need new material. Re-reading with a new purpose can produce deeper learning.

  1. Meaning read: What is the writer saying?
  2. Structure read: How is the argument organised?
  3. Vocabulary read: Which phrases, contrasts and choices are worth learning?
  4. Reconstruction read: Close the text and rebuild the argument using some of its useful language.

第一遍读内容,第二遍读结构,第三遍读语言,第四遍读“自己能不能重建”。一篇真正高质量的文章,可以比四篇随手刷过的文章更有学习价值。

27. Listening reveals whether the word has a sound | 听力会暴露“只会看不会听”的词

Advanced readers sometimes discover that their listening vocabulary is much smaller than their reading vocabulary. The word is visually familiar but acoustically invisible.

有些高级学习者阅读很强,但听力里同一个词出现时完全认不出来。原因很简单:这个词在脑中只有“字形”,没有稳定“声音”。

Use transcript-supported listening:

  1. Listen once without text.
  2. Mark what you understood.
  3. Listen again.
  4. Read the transcript.
  5. Find words you knew visually but missed acoustically.
  6. Mark stress and phrase boundaries.
  7. Listen again while following the text.
  8. Close the transcript and retell the idea.

这种练习会把“阅读词汇”重新接到“听说词汇”上。

28. Speaking converts passive vocabulary into active vocabulary | 口语把被动词汇推向主动词汇

Choose five target expressions from a text. Then speak for two minutes about a related but not identical topic. Do not force all five phrases. Use them only if they fit.

从文章里选五个表达,然后换一个相关但不完全相同的话题说两分钟。不要为了“完成任务”硬塞五个词。高级词汇训练也要保护自然度。

  1. Record the first attempt.
  2. Notice vague substitutions: thing, big, good, problem, very.
  3. Identify where a target phrase would genuinely improve precision.
  4. Check the phrase.
  5. Speak again.
  6. Repeat two days later without notes.

The first attempt tests access. The second builds control. The delayed attempt tests durability.

第一次测试“能不能拿出来”,第二次修质量,延迟之后第三次看“能不能留下来”。

29. Writing is where lexical precision becomes visible | 写作会把词汇精度暴露出来

Writing gives you time to see choices that disappear in fast conversation. Use that time deliberately.

写作速度慢,所以特别适合训练“选择”。你可以真正问自己:为什么是这个词,而不是另一个?

Draft first for meaning. Then do a lexical pass.

  • circle vague nouns: thing, stuff, aspect, factor, situation
  • circle weak general verbs: do, make, get, have
  • underline repeated adjectives: good, bad, big, important
  • check whether a more precise classification is needed
  • check collocations around key nouns
  • check whether formal vocabulary is actually appropriate
  • check dependent prepositions
  • check whether one “advanced” word can be replaced with a clearer simple word

The purpose is not to make every sentence harder. It is to increase resolution.

目标不是把每句话变难,而是让信息分辨率提高。

30. Vocabulary increases resolution | 词汇让你看见更细的区别

Consider the sentence:

The company had a big problem.

Now classify the problem:

  • a cash-flow problem
  • a structural problem
  • a temporary disruption
  • a regulatory constraint
  • a capacity bottleneck
  • a credibility problem
  • a coordination failure
  • an underlying design flaw

The vocabulary is not simply more sophisticated. Each phrase changes the model of what is happening.

高级词汇最大的价值之一,就是帮你更准确地“看见”。语言不是给思想装饰,而是提高思想分辨率。

31. Vocabulary also controls certainty | 词汇还能控制“你有多确定”

Advanced English needs calibrated claims. Compare:

  • The policy causes the decline.
  • The policy contributes to the decline.
  • The policy may contribute to the decline.
  • The decline appears to be associated with the policy.
  • The evidence is consistent with a possible policy effect.

These are not merely stylistic alternatives. They make different claims about causation and certainty.

高级词汇和词块可以帮助你控制断言强度。学术和专业表达尤其需要这种精度。

32. Learn by function, not alphabet | 高级词汇最好按“功能”组织,而不是按字母

An alphabetical notebook is good for lookup. It is weak for communication. Real speaking and writing begin with a meaning job.

真正表达时,你不会想:“现在我要用一个 S 开头的词。”你会想:“我要表示因果、限制、对比、证据、不同程度的确定性。”

Meaning jobVocabulary routes
Causecause, lead to, result in, contribute to, trigger, give rise to
Originresult from, stem from, arise from, be attributable to
Contrasthowever, whereas, by contrast, nevertheless, conversely
Qualificationmay, might, tends to, broadly, to some extent, under certain conditions
Evidenceindicate, suggest, demonstrate, support, be consistent with
Importanceimportant, significant, substantial, critical, crucial, material
Limitationconstraint, limitation, caveat, drawback, boundary, bottleneck
Changeshift, adjust, revise, modify, transform, restructure

Function-based organisation makes vocabulary easier to retrieve because it matches the reason you need the language.

33. Build contrast sets | 用“对比组”学习近义词

Do not learn synonyms as a vertical list. Build a contrast set around one decision.

不要把近义词抄成一长列。最好围绕一个“选择问题”来学。

Example: words around risk.

  • risk — possibility of harm/loss
  • danger — possibility or presence of harm, often more immediate
  • threat — something that may cause harm
  • hazard — source of potential harm, often technical/safety contexts
  • vulnerability — weakness that makes harm more possible
  • exposure — degree of contact with risk

Then learn verbs:

  • identify a risk
  • assess a risk
  • mitigate a risk
  • manage a risk
  • reduce exposure
  • address a vulnerability
  • eliminate a hazard
  • counter a threat

Now you do not own seven isolated nouns. You own a small decision system.

这就是词汇深度:词之间有边界,也有关系。

34. Build phrase networks | 不要只有单词网络,还要有词块网络

The Oxford Phrase List recognises that high-value language includes multiword units. At advanced level, chunks reduce the number of decisions you must make in real time.

  • take into account
  • in light of
  • with respect to
  • to a large extent
  • from a practical perspective
  • there is little evidence to suggest
  • be broadly consistent with
  • raise the possibility that
  • play a significant role in
  • under certain circumstances

A chunk is not a script to force everywhere. It is a pre-built route you can select when the communicative job fits.

词块不是“万能模板”。正确的学习方式是:理解它完成什么功能、适合什么语域,然后在真正需要时调用。

35. Use English definitions to weaken translation dependence | 用英文定义逐渐减少翻译依赖

Do not ban Chinese. That wastes a powerful resource. Instead, change the order.

  1. Read the target word.
  2. Read a simple English definition.
  3. Read an English example.
  4. Predict the meaning.
  5. Use Chinese to confirm if necessary.
  6. Return immediately to English.
  7. Explain the word in simple English.
  8. Use it in a new English sentence.

中文仍然存在,但位置改变了:它从“主控制器”变成“检查工具”。

Over time, more words will connect English-to-English without requiring a Chinese transit stop.

36. Build personal meaning | 让词和你的生活发生连接

A generic example proves that a word can exist. A personal example helps the word enter your own semantic network.

通用例句告诉你“这个词怎么用”;个人例句让这个词进入“你的世界”。

Target: allocate.

  • Dictionary-style: The government allocated additional funds to the programme.
  • Study: I need to allocate more time to active recall rather than passive reading.
  • Work: We allocated two engineers to the migration project.
  • Family: We allocate part of the weekend to family activities.

The word now has multiple retrieval routes: study, work, family, planning.

连接越多,未来越容易从不同方向把词找回来。

37. Vocabulary depth creates compression | 词汇深度可以压缩复杂意思

A precise word can compress a long explanation.

例如:

The company has a problem where one part of the process cannot handle as much work as the other parts, so everything slows down there.

The company has a capacity bottleneck.

The short version is not automatically better. It is better only if the listener understands the term. Advanced vocabulary gives you the option to compress or expand depending on audience.

高级词汇的真正能力不是“永远说短”,而是你可以根据听者选择压缩或展开。

38. Vocabulary depth also creates paraphrase power | 深度越高,改写能力越强

If you know only one phrase for one idea, comprehension and production become brittle. Advanced vocabulary gives you multiple routes to approximately the same conceptual territory while preserving differences.

Original:

The evidence is not strong enough to prove the claim.

Possible reformulations:

  • The evidence is insufficient to establish the claim.
  • The available evidence does not conclusively support the claim.
  • The data support only a more limited conclusion.
  • The claim goes beyond what the current evidence can justify.

These are not exact synonyms. Each changes emphasis slightly. That is precisely the point: advanced vocabulary gives you controlled alternatives.

高级改写不是“换几个同义词”,而是在保持核心意义的同时重新组织语言。

39. The advanced vocabulary notebook | 高级词汇本模板

Use one page per high-value item or phrase cluster. Do not try to fill every field immediately. Add depth over repeated encounters.

FieldExample
Targetsubstantial
Simple English meaninglarge or important enough to matter
中文桥接大量的;重大的;实质性的(按语境)
Pronunciationcheck audio + mark stress
Word familysubstantially
Collocationssubstantial evidence, substantial increase, substantial difference, substantial investment
Registerneutral-formal
Contrastsignificant, considerable, major, material
Personal exampleThe redesign produced a substantial improvement in reliability.
Retrieval cuelarge enough to matter; not merely small
Next returntomorrow / 3 days / 1 week

The notebook is not a museum. Its purpose is to send language back into use.

词汇本不是收藏馆。记录之后必须回到提取、说话、写作和真实阅读。

40. Five words are enough for one serious session | 一次认真训练,五个词就够

Choose five high-value items from one real text. For each item:

  1. understand the core meaning
  2. check pronunciation
  3. collect two collocations
  4. identify one useful word-family member
  5. compare one near-synonym
  6. write one personal sentence
  7. retrieve it without notes
  8. use it in a short oral explanation
  9. schedule a return

Five items × nine useful connections = a much denser learning event than fifty isolated translations.

高级学习不要害怕“今天只学五个”。如果五个词都真正进入系统,它们的价值可能远高于五十个只看过一次的词。

41. A 45-minute lesson architecture | 45 分钟词汇深度训练

TimeTaskWhy
0–10 minRead or listen to one demanding but understandable text.real input
10–15 minSelect 3–5 high-value items.prioritisation
15–25 minBuild depth: meaning, family, collocation, register, contrast.network growth
25–32 minClose notes and retrieve.memory access
32–40 minSpeak or write using the items.production
40–45 minCorrect, record one weak link, schedule return.feedback + spacing

Notice what is missing: twenty minutes of copying definitions. Copying can feel orderly while producing little retrieval.

重点不是笔记写得漂亮,而是词有没有进入你的可用系统。

42. A seven-day experiment | 七天实验

For one week, stop measuring vocabulary by new-word count. Choose only twenty-five high-value items—five per day for five days—then spend the final two days on retrieval and transfer.

DayTask
15 items from one article; build meaning + collocation + personal use.
2Retrieve Day 1, then add 5 new items.
3Retrieve Days 1–2, add 5, compare near-synonyms.
4Use earlier items in two-minute speaking; add 5.
5Write 200 words using selected earlier items naturally; add final 5.
6No new words. Mixed retrieval, listening and reformulation.
7No notes. Test meaning, phrase, choice and transfer.

At the end, classify each item:

  • Green: reliable and transferable
  • Amber: recognised but unstable
  • Red: still dependent on notes or translation

不要因为只有二十五个词就觉得“学得少”。如果其中十五个从被动词汇进入主动词汇,你已经发生了真正的变化。

43. A 30-day lexical-depth challenge | 30 天词汇深度挑战

  • Read 20 serious English articles, chapters or reports.
  • Listen to 10 long-form interviews, lectures or discussions.
  • Select no more than 120 high-value vocabulary items or chunks.
  • Build at least two collocations for each important headword.
  • Create 30 contrast pairs or sets.
  • Build 20 useful word families.
  • Record pronunciation for every unstable spoken item.
  • Write 12 short pieces using selected vocabulary.
  • Record 12 spoken responses.
  • Re-record four responses after lexical repair.
  • Complete four no-notes retrieval tests.
  • Build a personal list of your 20 repeated lexical errors.
  • Retire low-value words that are consuming too much study time.

The target is not 120 perfect words. The target is a better learning machine.

30 天之后,真正要保留下来的不是“120 个词”,而是一套你以后可以继续自己运行的学习系统。

44. The first weak link diagnostic | 第一个弱点诊断

SymptomLikely weak linkRepair first
I recognise many words but cannot use them.retrievalclosed-book recall + speaking/writing
I use difficult words but sound unnatural.collocationphrase learning + authentic examples
I keep choosing the wrong synonym.semantic precisioncontrast sets
I translate from Chinese word by word.lexical mappingEnglish definitions + phrase networks
I misuse prepositions.grammar patternstore whole lexical-grammar units

Repair the first break. Then test whether later problems reduce automatically.

这就是 eduKate 的诊断逻辑:不要看见十个症状就同时开十种药。先找最早断掉的那个环节。

45. What a strong tutor does differently | 高水平导师在词汇教学里做什么不同?

A weak vocabulary lesson can look impressive: fifty advanced words, elegant slides, difficult definitions. A strong lesson may look quieter. The tutor watches what the learner can actually retrieve, combine and transfer.

低质量高级词汇课也可以看起来很“厉害”:五十个难词、漂亮讲义、复杂解释。真正高水平的教学反而更关注学生到底能不能拿出来、搭起来、换场景继续用。

  • select vocabulary based on usefulness and learner need
  • diagnose whether the problem is meaning, form, collocation, register or retrieval
  • model real sentences
  • make differences visible
  • ask the learner to predict before explaining
  • remove support and require recall
  • correct unnatural combinations, not only grammar
  • return after a delay
  • test transfer in new contexts
  • track recurring learner-specific errors

This connects to eduKateSG’s Tutor Classification Model: explanation is only one level of teaching. Advanced learners often need diagnosis, route design, feedback and performance engineering rather than more information.

高级学习者缺的经常不是“更多知识”,而是“更好的诊断与训练设计”。

46. What not to do | 高级词汇学习的十个反面规则

  1. Do not equate difficulty with quality.
  2. Do not record only one Chinese translation.
  3. Do not trust recognition as proof of mastery.
  4. Do not replace simple words automatically with thesaurus words.
  5. Do not ignore collocation.
  6. Do not separate pronunciation from vocabulary.
  7. Do not study words without returning later.
  8. Do not learn academic language only as isolated terms.
  9. Do not underline every unknown word while reading.
  10. Do not build a vocabulary notebook that never returns to speaking and writing.

十条可以压缩成一句:不要把词当成静态标签。

47. The C1–C2 reality check | C1–C2 不是“词数证书”

The CEFR describes language performance, not a fixed vocabulary total. British Council’s C1 description includes understanding demanding longer texts, recognising implicit meaning, expressing ideas fluently and using language flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes. C2 goes further toward effortless understanding and precise expression of fine shades of meaning.

因此,没有一本词表可以单独宣布“背完就是 C1”或“背完就是 C2”。词汇必须进入实际理解和表达能力。

  • Can you read a difficult text and detect the writer’s stance?
  • Can you distinguish important from significant, substantial, critical and material when context demands?
  • Can you reformulate an idea for a friend, a manager and an academic reader?
  • Can you retrieve useful phrases while speaking under time pressure?
  • Can you write precisely without sounding inflated?
  • Can you understand common polysemy without translating every word?
  • Can you paraphrase without damaging the original meaning?

这些才是“高级词汇”真正应该支持的表现。

48. Advanced vocabulary for academic reading | 学术阅读里的词汇深度

Academic texts often reuse a relatively small set of high-value functions: defining, comparing, qualifying, attributing, evaluating, reporting evidence and signalling limitations. Build vocabulary around those functions.

FunctionExamples
Report a claimargue, propose, suggest, contend, maintain
Report evidenceindicate, demonstrate, reveal, support, be consistent with
Qualifymay, might, tends to, broadly, relatively, in part
Limitconstraint, limitation, caveat, boundary
Comparewhereas, by contrast, similarly, respectively
Explain causecontribute to, stem from, result in, arise from
Evaluaterobust, plausible, questionable, compelling, limited

Oxford’s OPAL lists academic words and phrases that are useful for this kind of work. Treat them as functional language, not prestige vocabulary.

学术词汇的任务不是让论文“看起来难”,而是让论证关系变得准确。

49. Advanced vocabulary for professional English | 职场高级词汇

Professional vocabulary is valuable when it improves decisions and coordination.

  • allocate resources
  • assess feasibility
  • clarify requirements
  • identify constraints
  • mitigate risk
  • resolve an issue
  • escalate a concern
  • revise an estimate
  • defer a decision
  • reach consensus
  • outline next steps
  • address the underlying cause

Notice the repeated pattern: these phrases classify work. They make responsibility, uncertainty, time and action more visible.

职场高级英语的核心通常不是华丽,而是:别人能不能快速知道“发生了什么、风险是什么、谁负责、下一步做什么”。

50. Advanced vocabulary for serious conversation | 严肃对话里的高级词汇

Conversation becomes advanced when you can handle nuance, not when you use rare words.

  • “I agree with the general point, but I would distinguish…”
  • “That depends on what we mean by…”
  • “The evidence supports a narrower claim.”
  • “There are at least two separate issues here.”
  • “That is plausible, although I am not sure it follows from…”
  • “I think the distinction matters because…”
  • “Let me qualify that.”
  • “More specifically…”
  • “I may be using the term differently.”

These expressions help you think aloud with precision. They are not impressive vocabulary ornaments. They are tools for managing meaning between people.

真正高级的对话,不是“说得更猛”,而是能把同意、不同意、限制、定义和证据关系说得更清楚。

51. The weekly lexical review | 每周词汇复盘

  1. Which words moved from recognition to active use?
  2. Which collocations still feel unstable?
  3. Which Chinese translations keep causing bad choices?
  4. Which word families became useful?
  5. Which words did I hear but fail to recognise?
  6. Which words did I overuse?
  7. Which formal words should I replace with simpler natural English?
  8. Which phrases transferred successfully into a new topic?
  9. Which words are consuming time but giving little value?
  10. What is next week’s first weak link?

每周复盘不要问“完成了多少页”。问“哪些词真的改变状态了”。

52. A lexical-depth self-test | 词汇深度自测

Choose one word: critical. Without using a dictionary, answer these questions.

  1. What are two common meanings?
  2. Give three collocations.
  3. Give one noun from the family.
  4. Give one adverb from the family.
  5. What is the difference between critical issue and critical comment?
  6. Can critical mean necessary or decisive?
  7. What is the stress pattern?
  8. Write a neutral professional sentence.
  9. Write a sentence where the word has a negative evaluative meaning.
  10. Explain the word in simple English without using Chinese.

If a familiar word suddenly feels difficult, that is not bad news. You have just discovered the next layer of learning.

如果一个“熟词”突然变难,不是退步。你只是第一次看见它真正有多大。

53. The 100-word audit | 用一百个熟词检查你的真实词汇深度

Take 100 high-value words from your own recent reading—not a random exam list. For each word, use a simple code:

  • M — meaning stable
  • P — pronunciation stable
  • F — word family known
  • C — collocations known
  • R — register understood
  • A — actively retrievable
  • T — transferable to new contexts

You may discover that 90/100 are meaning-stable but only 35/100 are actively retrievable and only 20/100 are transferable. That is useful information. Your problem is no longer “I need more vocabulary.” Your problem is now specific enough to repair.

这一步会把“我词汇不够”这种模糊焦虑,变成真正可以行动的诊断。

54. The rule of lexical return | 每一个新词都应该有“回程”

Many vocabulary systems have an entry path but no return path. The learner sees the word, writes the definition, completes the exercise and moves on forever.

很多词汇学习只有“进入”,没有“回来”。看到 → 抄意思 → 做题 → 永久离开。这样很容易制造短期熟悉,却不制造长期控制。

Give every important item a return:

  • return tomorrow through recall
  • return in three days through a contrast task
  • return in a week through speaking
  • return in two weeks through writing
  • return when the same word appears naturally in future reading

A vocabulary system becomes powerful when words keep re-entering from different doors.

高级词汇网络不是一次建成的,而是在每次“回来”时变得更密。

55. Build the network, not the trophy shelf | 建网络,不建“难词奖杯柜”

There is a seductive kind of vocabulary learning in which difficult words become trophies. The learner enjoys recognising that a word is rare. But language is not a spelling competition. The real question is whether the word improves understanding or communication.

难词很容易变成“收藏品”:我认识这个,你不认识。可真正的语言能力不是收藏比赛。

A common phrase you can retrieve precisely in ten contexts may be more valuable than an obscure word you recognise once a year.

一个能在十种场景里准确使用的高价值词块,可能比一年只遇到一次的生僻词更值得先学。

This does not make rare language unimportant. It puts it in the right place: after the high-value network is strong enough to support it.

56. The lesson in one equation | 用一个公式记住本课

Advanced vocabulary = breadth × depth × access × appropriate choice × transfer.

高级词汇能力 = 广度 × 深度 × 提取 × 合适选择 × 迁移。

This is a teaching model, not a literal psychometric formula. The multiplication sign reminds us of something useful: if one dimension is close to zero, total performance can collapse. Knowing many words does not help enough if you cannot retrieve them. Retrieving them does not help enough if you choose them badly. Choosing them correctly in one exercise does not help enough if they disappear in real conversation.

这个“乘法”是教学模型,不是心理测量公式。它提醒我们:某一环太弱,整体表现就会被拖住。

57. Your first assignment | 第一份作业

Choose exactly five words from this list:

  • approach
  • account
  • maintain
  • establish
  • critical
  • significant
  • address
  • concern
  • evidence
  • assume

For each word, build one mini FENCE:

  1. simple English meaning
  2. short Chinese bridge
  3. pronunciation
  4. two useful word-family forms if available
  5. three collocations
  6. one near-synonym and the difference
  7. register
  8. one personal sentence
  9. one spoken sentence
  10. one delayed retrieval tomorrow

Do not add more words until you have completed the return.

先把五个词做深,再加新的。

58. Where this lesson sits in the eduKate vocabulary system | 本课在 eduKate 词汇体系中的位置

This lesson owns the learner-facing Chinese route for the principle lexical depth before rare-word chasing. It does not replace the specialist pages that own individual mechanisms. Use those pages when you need to go deeper.

这样可以保持清楚的所有权边界:本课负责“中文母语高级学习者怎样学习词汇深度”,已有机制页继续负责它们自己的专业解释。

59. Recommended reference floor | 推荐参考底座

60. SEO language map | 本课关键词范围

This lesson naturally serves advanced English vocabulary, C1 vocabulary, C2 vocabulary, lexical depth, vocabulary depth, English vocabulary for Chinese speakers, Mandarin English vocabulary, how to learn advanced English vocabulary, English word families, English collocations, advanced vocabulary study methods, active vocabulary, passive vocabulary, vocabulary retrieval, vocabulary memorisation, vocabulary transfer, Oxford 5000, English Vocabulary in Use Advanced, advanced learner dictionary, 高级英语词汇, C1 英语词汇, C2 英语词汇, 词汇深度, 英语搭配, 英语词族, 英语词块, 主动词汇, 被动词汇, 英语词汇记忆, 英语词汇学习方法, 中文母语英语学习 and 高级英语怎么学.

The keywords belong inside the learning architecture; they are not repeated mechanically. Search language should help the right learner find the right lesson, then disappear into useful teaching.

61. The final rule | 最后一条规则

Do not ask how difficult a word is. Ask how much control you have over it.

不要问这个词有多难。问你对它有多少控制。

Can you understand it? Hear it? Pronounce it? Connect its family? Use its grammar? Choose its collocations? Feel its register? Distinguish its neighbours? Retrieve it tomorrow? Use it next week in another topic?

如果答案越来越多地是“可以”,你的词汇正在真正变高级。

Only then should you worry about whether the next word looks impressive.

先把熟词变深,再让词汇变大。
