How to Learn Basic English Vocabulary (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.004 | Remember Words With Retrieval and Spaced Review | 用回忆和间隔复习记住单词

Do not only look again. Try to remember before you look.
不要只是再看一遍。先试着回忆,再看答案。

Quick read | 先看最重要的

You study water, help, home, book, need. Five minutes later, they feel easy. Tomorrow, two words disappear.

你今天学了 water、help、home、book、need。五分钟后觉得“都会了”。第二天,却有两个想不起来。

This is normal. Learning once is not the same as keeping a word available.

这很正常。第一次学会,不等于以后随时还能提取。

A simple beginner memory loop is:

Learn → Close → Recall → Check → Correct → Wait → Recall Again → Use

学习 → 盖住答案 → 回忆 → 检查 → 纠正 → 等一段时间 → 再回忆 → 使用

The problem is not always “bad memory” | 问题不一定是“记性不好”

When a word disappears, beginners often say:

“My memory is bad.”

But many different things can produce the same symptom.

  • You never understood the word clearly.
  • You knew the Chinese meaning but not the sound.
  • You only reread the answer.
  • You never tried to recall the word.
  • You reviewed everything in one sitting.
  • You waited too long before the first return.
  • You never used the word in a phrase.
  • You learned too many words at once.
  • You confused similar words.

所以,“记不住”不是一个单一问题。先找最早断掉的连接。

Recognition and recall are different | 认得出来,和自己想出来,不一样

Look at this:

chair = 椅子

You may think, “Easy. I know it.”

Now hide the English. Look only at 椅子.

Can you say chair?

如果看到 chair 时知道“椅子”,这是 recognition(识别)。如果只看到“椅子”也能自己说出 chair,这是 recall(回忆提取)。

Both are useful. But speaking and writing need more recall.

Retrieval practice in very simple words | 什么叫主动回忆?

Retrieval means trying to bring information out of memory before you look at the answer.

主动回忆,就是在看答案之前,先让大脑自己把答案找出来。

Examples:

  • “水” → say water.
  • need → say the Chinese meaning.
  • picture of a bus → say bus.
  • go → make the phrase go home.
  • hear book → point to the word book.
  • sentence with a blank: “I ___ help.” → need.

每一次你在没有答案的情况下主动寻找,都是一次提取练习。

Why looking again feels better than it is | 为什么“再看一遍”很容易产生错觉?

When the answer is on the page, your brain receives a lot of help.

答案一直在眼前时,你不需要真正从记忆里寻找。

That can create familiarity:

“I have seen this many times.”

But familiarity is not the same as availability.

“看着很熟”不等于“需要时能出来”。

Research reviews in learning science have repeatedly found strong benefits for low-stakes practice testing and for spreading practice over time rather than doing all practice back-to-back. The important beginner translation is simple: try to recall, and return later.

Do not turn retrieval into a stressful exam | 主动回忆不是天天考试

Retrieval practice can be tiny and low pressure.

  • one flashcard
  • one blank
  • one picture
  • one Chinese prompt
  • one spoken question
  • one phrase to complete

它不是为了给你打分,而是为了训练“把词从记忆里拿出来”。

The first rule: answer before flipping | 第一原则:翻答案之前先回答

If you use a flashcard:

Front: 水

Back: water

Do not flip immediately.

  1. Look at 水.
  2. Pause.
  3. Try to say the English.
  4. Then flip.
  5. Check.
  6. If wrong, say the correct answer.
  7. Use it in a phrase: drink water.

如果每次一看到提示就立刻翻卡片,你主要在“看答案”,不是在“提取答案”。

Feedback matters | 回忆后要有反馈

If you recall the wrong word and never check, the error can continue.

所以流程不是:

Guess → move on.

而是:

Try → Check → Correct → Try again later.

先努力想,再立刻确认。错了以后,看到正确答案并重新说一次。

Do not stare at a wrong answer | 错了以后不要只看红叉

Suppose the prompt is “椅子” and you say table.

Do not only mark X.

Repair:

  • chair = 椅子
  • table = 桌子
  • point to a chair
  • say “a chair”
  • say “This is a chair.”
  • test again later

错误要变成新的区分,而不是只变成失败记录。

Spacing: come back after a gap | 间隔复习:隔一段时间再回来

If you study one word ten times in one minute, all ten repetitions happen in almost the same memory state.

如果你把十次都挤在一分钟里,练习很集中。

Spacing means returning after some time has passed.

间隔复习就是:学过以后先离开,再回来尝试提取。

The exact best gap depends on what you are learning, how well you know it, and how long you want to keep it. There is no single magic timetable for every learner.

没有一个“全世界所有人、所有词都必须完全一样”的神奇间隔表。学习程度、目标时间和材料难度都会影响安排。

A simple beginner return schedule | 一个简单的初学者复习表

Use this as a starting guide, not a law.

ReturnJob中文任务
5–10 minutes laterRecall without looking.几分钟后第一次不看答案回忆。
Later the same dayQuick mixed recall.当天晚些时候混合复习。
Next dayRecall + phrase.第二天回忆并说一个短语。
3 days laterMix with other words.三天后与其他词混合。
1 week laterUse in a new sentence.一周后放进新句子。
2 weeks laterCheck weak words.两周后重点检查薄弱词。
1 month laterLonger-term check.一个月后检查还能否提取。

If a word is very easy, you can wait longer. If it keeps failing, return sooner and repair the weak connection.

很容易的词可以拉长间隔;反复失败的词要更快回来,并先修问题。

Spacing is not “review everything every day” | 间隔复习不是“每天把所有词重看一遍”

If your vocabulary grows, reviewing every card every day becomes impossible.

词汇越来越多以后,不可能每天把全部词从头看到尾。

Instead, words can move at different speeds:

  • New: return soon.
  • Weak: return often.
  • Stable: wait longer.
  • Very stable: check occasionally through real use.

让不同词按自己的稳定程度移动,而不是所有词永远同一个复习频率。

The four piles | 四个词堆

You can do this with paper cards or an app.

PileMeaningAction
1NewReview soon.
2WeakReview again today/tomorrow.
3GrowingWait a few days.
4StableWait longer; use naturally.

答对一次不需要马上“毕业”。可以要求它在不同天、不同提示下再次成功。

One correct answer is good; repeated success is better | 对一次很好,多次跨时间成功更稳定

You say water correctly today. Good.

Can you still say it tomorrow?

Can you hear it next week?

Can you use it in a new sentence?

真正稳定不是“刚刚答对过一次”,而是跨时间、跨提示、跨场景仍然能用。

Use more than one kind of prompt | 不要永远只用一种提示

If every card is English → Chinese, you may become good only at that direction.

Mix prompt types:

PromptResponse
water说中文意思 + 发音
say/write water
picture of watersay water
audio “water”identify meaning / spelling
drink ___water
I need ___.water / help / time

多种提示让单词形成多条可用路线。

Chinese → English is especially important for output | 中文提示 → 英文,对输出很重要

Reading often asks you to go English → meaning.

Speaking often starts with an idea → English.

所以如果目标包括口语和写作,不能永远只练“看到英文认中文”。

Use prompts such as:

  • 家 → home
  • 帮助 → help
  • 需要 → need
  • 朋友 → friend
  • 明天 → tomorrow

Picture → English can reduce translation dependence | 图片 → 英文,可以减少翻译依赖

For concrete nouns and actions, pictures or real objects can connect meaning directly to English.

  • picture of a chair → chair
  • picture of water → water
  • person running → run
  • open door → open

中文仍然可以帮你确认意思,但不必成为每一次回忆的必经站。

Sound → word is a memory test too | 声音 → 单词,也是记忆测试

Ask a teacher, friend or dictionary audio to say a known word. Can you identify it without seeing the spelling?

如果你看词能认、听词不能认,这不是简单的“忘了”。声音通道需要单独修复。

Word → phrase retrieval | 单词 → 短语提取

Prompt: go

Try:

  • go home
  • go to school
  • go to work

Prompt: need

  • need help
  • need water
  • need time

这会让记忆从“词义”升级到“词怎么工作”。

Phrase completion | 短语补全

  • take the ___ → bus
  • make ___ → tea
  • go ___ → home
  • ask a ___ → question
  • drink ___ → water
  • good ___ → morning / idea / food

短语补全是很轻量的提取方式,适合初学者。

Sentence completion | 句子补全

  • I ___ help. → need
  • I ___ tea. → like
  • I ___ home. → go
  • This is my ___. → book / phone / bag
  • Where is the ___? → bus / station / toilet

句子给词一个语法位置,帮助记忆和使用一起成长。

Free recall | 自由回忆

Close everything. In one minute, write all the food words you can remember.

关掉资料,一分钟内写出你能想起的所有“食物和饮料”词。

Then compare with your list.

自由回忆比逐张卡片更难,但它能告诉你“没有提示时,哪些词还会自己出现”。

Category recall | 分类回忆

Try one category:

  • 5 people words
  • 5 home words
  • 5 action verbs
  • 5 question words
  • 5 time words

分类提示比完全自由更容易,是很好的中间台阶。

Do not test only in the original order | 不要永远按原顺序测试

If the list is always:

book → phone → bag → key → money

you may partly remember sequence.

Mix:

key → book → money → bag → phone

打乱顺序可以检查你记住的是词本身,还是只记住“下一个是什么”。

Mix old and new | 新旧词要混合

A beginner often studies:

Day 1 list. Then never sees it again.

Day 2 list. Then never sees it again.

Better:

  • Day 1: 5 new.
  • Day 2: 5 new + 3 old.
  • Day 3: 5 new + old weak words.
  • Day 4: mixed set.

新词不断进来,旧词也不断返回。这样词汇系统才不会只向前堆积、后面不断漏掉。

Interleave carefully | 适度混合不同类型

Once a beginner understands a category, mix categories:

  • water
  • go
  • small
  • tomorrow
  • friend
  • where

混合会让每道题都需要重新判断“这是什么类型的词、怎么使用”,而不是一直在同一个模式里自动答。

But do not make the first exposure chaotic. First learn clearly. Then mix for retrieval.

第一次教学可以分组清楚;后续复习再混合。

Easy cards should not steal all your time | 简单卡片不要占掉全部时间

It feels good to answer easy cards quickly. But your study time is more valuable when weak words receive targeted attention.

可以这样分:

  • Easy: check quickly, then increase interval.
  • Medium: normal review.
  • Hard: diagnose and repair.

不要为了“刷很多正确答案”而一遍遍复习早已稳定的词。

Hard does not always mean “review more” | 难词不一定只是“多看几遍”

If through keeps failing, ask why.

  • Meaning unclear?
  • Spelling strange?
  • Sound-spelling mismatch?
  • No phrase?
  • Confused with though / thought?

先找原因,再决定练什么。

The first weak link table | 词汇记忆第一个卡点

SymptomLikely weak linkRepair
I recognise it but cannot say it.Recall direction weakChinese/picture → English retrieval.
I say it but cannot spell it.Form retrieval weakCover-write-check.
I read it but cannot hear it.Sound mapping weakAudio → identify → repeat.
I know it today, forget tomorrow.Delay/spacing weakNext-day retrieval + feedback.
I know the word but cannot use it.Phrase network weakLearn one phrase + sentence frame.
I confuse two words.Discrimination weakContrast side by side.
I know it only in one exercise.Transfer weakChange prompt and context.

Use mistakes to schedule the next return | 用错误决定下一次复习

If a word is wrong today, it should probably return sooner than a word you have recalled correctly on five different days.

这比“所有词固定每天一次”更聪明。

Your schedule can adapt:

  • Wrong → repair + soon.
  • Slow but correct → normal/soon.
  • Fast and correct → longer gap.
  • Correct in sentence → longer gap.

Speed is information, but do not rush | 反应速度有信息价值,但不要强迫快

If chair takes 20 seconds every time, the word may not be very available yet.

But beginners need thinking time. Do not create panic.

先看趋势:同一个词从每次都完全想不起来,到需要 10 秒,再到 3 秒,这就是进步。

Confidence is not enough | “我觉得我会”还不够

Before flipping a card, you may feel sure.

Then the answer is different.

So use performance, not feeling alone:

  • Did I recall?
  • Was it correct?
  • Could I spell it?
  • Could I use it?

感觉可以参考,但真正的学习状态最好由实际提取来检查。

The 5-word micro-session | 5 个词的小训练

Words:

water · help · home · book · need

Round 1: Learn

  • water 水 — drink water
  • help 帮助 — need help
  • home 家 — go home
  • book 书 — read a book
  • need 需要 — I need water.

Round 2: Close

Hide the list.

Round 3: Chinese → English

  • 水 → ?
  • 帮助 → ?
  • 家 → ?
  • 书 → ?
  • 需要 → ?

Round 4: Phrase

  • drink ___
  • need ___
  • go ___
  • read a ___
  • I ___ water.

Round 5: Wait

Leave for ten minutes.

Round 6: Recall again

Repeat without looking.

这就是一个非常小的 retrieval + spacing 单元。

The 20-word beginner session | 20 个词怎么练?

Do not treat all twenty as brand-new if you are a true beginner.

Better:

  • 5 new target words
  • 5 recent words
  • 5 older weak words
  • 5 stable words used in phrases

这样一个 20 词练习同时承担“新学习 + 近期巩固 + 弱点修复 + 长期保持”。

The 80/20 beginner review idea | 一个实用的 80/20 复习想法

This is not a scientific law. It is a planning heuristic.

On some days, spend most vocabulary time retrieving words you already met, and a smaller part adding new ones.

例如 20 分钟里:

  • 12–15 分钟:旧词主动提取与使用
  • 5–8 分钟:新词

如果你每天只加新词、不回旧词,词汇表会越来越长,可用词却不一定同步增长。

Flashcards: good tool, bad master | 词卡是工具,不是主人

Flashcards are useful when they make you retrieve.

They are less useful when you:

  • flip too fast
  • only reread
  • never say the answer
  • never use phrases
  • keep easy cards forever at the same frequency
  • treat the app score as the goal

词卡的目标是帮助语言进入真实记忆,不是让你在软件里积累漂亮数字。

Paper cards can work | 纸卡也完全可以

You do not need a complicated app.

Front:

帮助

Back:

help
need help
Please help me.

Move cards between New / Weak / Growing / Stable piles.

Apps can automate spacing | 软件可以自动安排间隔

Spaced-repetition apps can help schedule cards. But the quality of the card still matters.

A bad card remains bad even with perfect scheduling.

例如一张卡背面塞进 15 个意思、10 个短语和 20 个例句,对零基础来说可能负担太大。

Keep cards small and clear.

One card, one main job | 一张卡一个主要任务

Good beginner card:

Front:

Back: home · go home · I go home.

Another card can test:

Front: go ___

Back: home

不同卡片可以测试同一个词的不同连接。

Do not put ten synonyms on one beginner card | 不要一张初级卡塞十个近义词

Front: “好”

Back: good, nice, great, excellent, wonderful, splendid, superb…

This may look rich, but it gives the beginner too many competing answers.

先稳住 good。以后有能力区分语气和搭配时,再增加其他词。

Use sentence cards after word cards | 单词稳定后加入句子卡

Word card:

水 → water

Phrase card:

drink ___ → water

Sentence card:

I need ___. → water

一个词可以从“词义记忆”逐渐进入“结构中的提取”。

Use listening cards too | 也可以加入声音卡

If your tool allows audio:

Front: audio “water”

Response: say meaning, then show spelling.

这能补上“纸面词汇很强、听力词汇很弱”的常见问题。

Review aloud sometimes | 有些复习要开口

If every review is silent, speaking retrieval may remain weak.

每天可以选一部分卡片:

  • 看中文,说英文
  • 看图片,说英文
  • 看短语提示,说完整短语
  • 看句型,说完整句

不要在公共场合不方便时强迫自己大声说;可以低声或在合适环境完成。

Write from memory sometimes | 有些复习要写

Speaking friend correctly does not guarantee you can spell it.

每周加入少量:

  • 中文 → 英文拼写
  • 听词 → 拼写
  • 短语听写
  • 一句简单句听写

不同输出方式会暴露不同的薄弱连接。

Use the word in a new sentence | 换一个新句子

Old sentence:

I need water.

New sentences:

  • I need help.
  • Do you need water?
  • We need more time.

换句子能检查:你记住的是整句表面,还是理解了 need 的功能。

Transfer is the final memory test | 迁移是更高级的记忆检查

You learned cold water.

Can you understand cold milk?

You learned my book.

Can you say my phone?

真正学习不是把唯一例句冻结,而是把可用规则带到新表面。

Do not review only immediately after learning | 不要只在刚学完时测试

An immediate test often feels easy because the word is still active.

更有信息价值的检查包括:

  • 晚一点
  • 第二天
  • 三天后
  • 一周后

延时以后还能成功,才说明记忆更稳定。

But do not make the first gap too cruel | 第一次间隔也不要故意太狠

If a true beginner learns ten difficult new words and you wait one month before the first review, most may fail.

Spacing is not “wait as long as possible.” It is “separate learning events so memory has to work again.”

初学者第一次返回通常要比较早,然后随着成功逐步拉长。

Difficulty should be productive | 难度要有学习价值

If recall is a little difficult but possible, the learner has to search memory.

If recall is impossible because the word was never understood, more struggle is not automatically useful.

所以:

  • 有一点难 → 可以训练提取
  • 完全没有线索 → 先重新教学

When to restudy | 什么时候应该重新看?

Retrieval practice does not mean “never look at the material again.”

If you cannot recall, restudy briefly and accurately.

流程:

  1. Try.
  2. Fail.
  3. Look at correct answer.
  4. Understand.
  5. Say/use it.
  6. Close.
  7. Try again later.

回忆和重新学习不是敌人。关键是不要让“重新看答案”完全取代主动提取。

When to stop a session | 什么时候该停?

If attention collapses, everything feels mixed, and errors rise because of fatigue, adding another 50 cards may not help.

短而稳定的学习通常比“硬撑到完全混乱”更适合零基础。

Stop, rest, return later.

Sleep and normal life matter | 睡眠和正常生活也重要

Vocabulary learning happens inside a person, not inside a card deck.

Regular sleep, attention, reasonable study load and repeated real use support learning. This lesson is not medical advice; it is simply a reminder that memory practice works inside normal human limits.

不要把“记不住”全部归因于意志力。学习量、疲劳、注意力和生活状态都会影响表现。

A ten-minute daily retrieval routine | 每天十分钟主动回忆

TimeTask
2 min5 old cards: answer before flipping.
2 min5 weak cards: repair errors.
2 min3–5 new words.
2 minphrase completion.
2 minclose everything; free recall.

如果只有十分钟,仍然可以完成一个完整循环。

A twenty-minute routine | 每天二十分钟

MinutesJob
5Old mixed retrieval
5Weak-word repair
4New words
3Phrase/sentence use
3Listening or writing retrieval

重点不是每天最大化“新词输入”,而是让旧词不断保持可用。

A 30-minute routine | 每天三十分钟

  1. 5 min — free/category recall
  2. 8 min — spaced cards
  3. 5 min — new vocabulary
  4. 5 min — phrase and sentence production
  5. 4 min — listening recognition
  6. 3 min — error log and next-return decisions

初学者不一定需要更长。稳定执行比偶尔一次学三小时更重要。

The seven-day beginner memory plan | 七天词汇记忆计划

DayJob
1Learn 10 useful words. Test after 10 minutes.
2Recall the 10. Add 5 new.
3Mix 15. Repair weak 5.
4No big new list. Phrase retrieval.
5Add 5 new. Listen to old words.
6Write 10 from memory. Use 10 in sentences.
7No new words. Full mixed check.

一周后,你得到的不是“70 个新词”,而是一小批真正开始稳定的词。

A 30-day vocabulary memory build | 30 天词汇保持计划

Week 1: Learn the routine

重点:会用“先回忆、后看答案”。

Week 2: Start real spacing

重点:旧词不再每天全部复习,而是按稳定度分开。

Week 3: Add mixed prompts

重点:英文→中文、中文→英文、图片→英文、声音→拼写、词→短语。

Week 4: Transfer

重点:把词放进新句子、真实口语和简单阅读。

30 天结束时,问的不是“我打卡了多少天”,而是“哪些词现在真的能随时调用”。

The weekly vocabulary audit | 每周词汇盘点

Once a week, choose a mixed sample.

CheckQuestion
MeaningDo I understand it?
SoundCan I hear/say it?
SpellingCan I write it?
PhraseCan I give one common phrase?
SentenceCan I use it?
DelayCan I still recall after days?

不要只计算总词数。看哪种连接最常失败。

Build a tiny error log | 建立一个很小的错误记录

DateWordErrorRepair
Monfriendspellingcover-write-check
Tuechairmeaning confusioncontrast chair/table
Wedneedcould not produceChinese→English + phrase
Thubookcould not hearaudio recognition

记录只需要足够帮助下一步,不要让“管理系统”比学习本身更复杂。

Do not punish forgetting | 忘记本身不是失败终点

Forgetting tells you that a memory needs another successful return.

如果每一次忘记都被当成“我不行”,学习会变成情绪判断。

Better question:

What should I change before the next attempt?

下一次之前,我应该修哪一个连接?

Use success to increase the gap | 成功以后逐渐拉长间隔

If home is correct today, tomorrow, three days later and one week later, reviewing it ten times tomorrow may be a poor use of time.

让稳定词向更长间隔移动,把时间释放给薄弱词和真实使用。

Use failure to improve the card | 失败以后也检查卡片设计

Maybe the card itself is bad.

Bad:

Front: take

Back: 20 meanings and 30 expressions.

Better for a beginner:

Front: 乘公交

Back: take the bus

Another separate card:

Front: 拍照

Back: take a photo

把复杂网络拆成可处理的小单元,然后以后再连接。

Use contrast cards for confusable words | 易混词用对比卡

Word 1Word 2Contrast
chair 椅子table 桌子sit vs put things
come 来go 去toward vs away from reference point
hear 听见listen 听perception vs deliberate attention
look 看see 看见direct attention vs perceive
say 说tell 告诉different common patterns

不要一次加入十组易混词。只修真正出现的混淆。

Use a “not yet” pile | 可以有一个“还没稳定”词堆

Some words need longer. Do not force them into “known” or “unknown” only.

建立:

  • New
  • Not yet stable
  • Stable

学习状态是连续变化的,不需要每个词今天就被判“会/不会”。

Active vocabulary needs production | 主动词汇需要输出

If you want to speak, review must include speaking.

If you want to write, review must include writing.

只做选择题可能提高识别,但不一定自动变成主动输出。

每周加入:

  • 一分钟小口语
  • 五句真实生活句子
  • 十词不看答案拼写

Passive vocabulary can be larger | 被动词汇可以更大

It is normal to understand more words than you can produce quickly.

不是每一个阅读词都必须立刻变成口语词。

For beginners, prioritise active mastery of a high-value core, while allowing some extra words to remain recognition-only until needed.

Do not make every word equally important | 不是每个词都同等重要

Some words deserve deep practice:

  • need
  • want
  • go
  • home
  • help
  • what
  • where

Some rare words may only need recognition now.

根据频率、个人目标和使用机会分配学习成本。

Real use is also spaced retrieval | 真实使用本身也是间隔提取

You learned ticket last week. Today you travel and need to ask:

Where is my ticket?

This real use is valuable retrieval.

所以最好的词汇系统不是永远困在卡片里。它应该不断返回阅读、听力、口语、写作和真实生活。

Read easy material repeatedly | 简单材料也可以延时再读

Read a very easy text today. Return in three days. Notice which words now feel automatic.

不要只追求“每天永远换新文章”。适度重读熟悉材料,可以让词汇在不同时间点再次出现。

Listen to familiar audio again later | 熟悉音频也可以以后再听

A beginner audio that felt difficult on Monday may feel easier on Friday.

这会让你看见学习真实发生:以前只能看懂的词,现在可能已经听得出来。

Do not overlearn only one example | 不要只把唯一例句背到滚瓜烂熟

Old:

I need water.

Later:

  • I need help.
  • I need time.
  • We need food.
  • Do you need water?

重复很重要,但也要适度变化表面,检查迁移。

Spacing and variation work together | 间隔与变化可以一起使用

Monday: I need water.

Wednesday: I need help.

Saturday: Do you need more time?

同一个核心词在不同时间和不同句子里返回,记忆会变得更灵活。

A beginner “known word” standard | 零基础可以怎样定义“会一个词”?

A practical standard:

  • I know the main meaning.
  • I can recognise the spelling.
  • I can hear it in clear speech.
  • I can say it.
  • I can give one useful phrase.
  • I can recall it after a delay.

不是要求每个词掌握词典所有义项,而是先做到一个高价值核心用法稳定。

What if I miss the same word five times? | 同一个词错五次怎么办?

Stop increasing repetition blindly. Diagnose.

  1. Is the meaning clear?
  2. Can I pronounce it?
  3. Is spelling confusing?
  4. Do I have a useful phrase?
  5. Am I confusing another word?
  6. Is the card too complex?
  7. Is this word important enough now?

如果只是低频、暂时不需要的难词,可以先放低优先级。词汇学习也需要取舍。

What if I remember everything immediately? | 如果当场全会呢?

Good. Now wait.

真正的问题不是“刚学完会不会”,而是“隔一段时间还能不能”。

Move stable words outward in time.

What if flashcards are boring? | 如果词卡很无聊呢?

Use other retrieval forms:

  • point-and-say
  • picture naming
  • mini dialogue
  • sentence completion
  • room scavenger hunt
  • one-minute speaking
  • short dictation
  • category recall

主动提取是一种学习原则,不是一种固定软件。

What if I have only five minutes? | 如果只有五分钟?

  1. Recall 5 old words.
  2. Repair 2 weak words.
  3. Use 3 words in phrases.
  4. Close the page and recall again.

短时间也可以做高质量学习。

What if I have one hour? | 如果有一小时?

Do not spend the entire hour adding new words.

Possible structure:

  • 15 min old retrieval
  • 10 min weak-word repair
  • 10 min new words
  • 10 min listening
  • 10 min phrase/sentence use
  • 5 min error log and next plan

时间更多,不代表新词数量必须成倍增加。

Parents: do not give the answer too fast | 家长:不要太快说答案

If the child is genuinely trying, give a small pause.

过早提示会让提取过程还没开始就被答案替代。

But do not wait until frustration explodes. Use a small cue if needed:

  • first sound
  • picture
  • phrase frame
  • two-choice prompt

目标是“让学习者做尽可能多的回忆工作”,不是制造压力。

Teachers: separate recall failure from understanding failure | 老师:区分“想不起来”和“根本没懂”

If a learner cannot recall because, first ask whether they understand its function.

如果连“表示原因连接”这个意义都不清楚,继续抽认卡可能只是重复模糊信息。

Understanding first. Retrieval after.

Teachers: feedback should be fast and small | 老师:反馈要快而清楚

For beginner vocabulary, correction often needs only:

“Not table. Chair. This is a chair. Try again later.”

不一定每次错误都展开成十分钟讲座。先修当前弱连接。

Teachers: keep old words alive | 老师:旧词要继续活着

Every lesson can contain a small old-word return.

  • 5 old words at the start
  • old phrases inside new examples
  • one mixed recall at the end

这样课程不是一节节完全断开的内容,而是一条连续学习历史。

Use the first weak link, not the loudest symptom | 修最早的卡点,不只看最明显的症状

A learner says, “I forget vocabulary.”

Possible first weak links:

  • poor word selection
  • unclear meaning
  • no sound link
  • no phrase
  • no retrieval
  • no spacing
  • too much new load
  • no transfer

修最早的断点,后面的“忘记”症状可能一起改善。

Do not copy a fixed schedule blindly | 不要迷信固定复习数字

You may see formulas online such as “review exactly after 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days.” These can be useful reminders, but they are not universal laws.

真正安排应该根据:

  • 这个词多难
  • 你已经成功几次
  • 什么时候需要它
  • 你要保留多久
  • 这次提取是否快速准确

把固定表当起点,把学习表现当反馈。

The science floor | 研究底线

A major review of learning techniques by Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and distributed practice as high-utility techniques across many learning conditions. The same review notes that retrieval with feedback is especially robust and that spreading learning episodes over time generally supports longer-term retention better than massing them together.

对零基础学习者,我们把复杂研究翻成一个非常简单的行动原则:

先尝试回忆;错了就反馈;隔一段时间再回来。

这不是说所有学习都只能用抽认卡,也不是说所有人必须使用同一间隔。研究原则要经过学习者状态和具体任务来应用。

Connect to deeper eduKate learning mechanisms | 连接 eduKate 更深学习机制

This Chinese Edition lesson keeps only the very simple vocabulary-entry version. The deeper mechanism pages remain the canonical owners of the full learning science.

Beginner memory tools | 零基础可以用哪些工具?

  • paper flashcards
  • a small notebook
  • sticky notes on real objects
  • a learner dictionary with audio
  • a spaced-repetition app
  • a parent/teacher asking quick questions
  • your own voice recordings

工具不是越复杂越好。能帮助你“主动提取 + 延时返回 + 正确反馈”的工具就有价值。

Dictionary tools | 词典工具

复习时如果发现发音、词性、例句或搭配不确定,回到可靠学习型词典核实。

Beginner vocabulary book | 初级词汇参考书

English Vocabulary in Use: Elementary provides topic-based vocabulary with explanations and exercises. You can use its units as input, then add your own spaced retrieval after studying.

书负责提供组织好的输入;你的回忆与复习循环负责让语言逐渐变成长期可用。

British Council beginner vocabulary | British Council 初级词汇

British Council A1–A2 Vocabulary offers topic-based interactive practice of meaning, pronunciation and spelling. Use it as one source of beginner input, then return to the words later without the exercise in front of you.

A final 25-word test | 最后做一个 25 词测试

Try without looking at earlier parts of this lesson.

Can you produce English for:

  1. 帮助
  2. 手机
  3. 需要
  4. 想要
  5. 喜欢
  6. 听见
  7. 朋友
  8. 家人
  9. 今天
  10. 明天
  11. 哪里
  12. 什么
  13. 学校
  14. 工作
  15. 公交车

Now check.

Do not record only “score = 18/25”. Mark why each missed word failed.

Second test: phrase retrieval | 第二个测试:短语

Complete:

  1. drink ___
  2. go ___
  3. need ___
  4. read a ___
  5. take the ___
  6. make ___
  7. ask a ___
  8. my ___
  9. very ___
  10. at ___

If the word is known but the phrase is missing, the weak link is no longer basic meaning. It is connection.

Third test: delayed return | 第三个测试:延时返回

Do not do this now.

Come back tomorrow and repeat the 25-word test.

Then repeat one week later with mixed order.

真正的 Lesson 004 不在“今天看完页面”时结束,而在你以后回来还能提取时完成。

What comes next | 下一步

You now have four foundations:

  1. Choose useful words. 先选最有用的词。
  2. Learn meaning, sound and spelling together. 意思、声音、拼写一起建立。
  3. Put words into phrases and sentences. 让词进入组合。
  4. Retrieve and return after a delay. 主动回忆并隔一段时间再回来。

Next, the series can move into real beginner vocabulary worlds: people, family, home, food, actions, time, places, school, work and everyday life.

Final rule | 最后一条规则

If the answer is always visible, memory does very little work.

如果答案永远在眼前,记忆就不需要做很多工作。

Hide it. Try. Check. Correct. Wait. Come back. Use it.

盖住。试着想。检查。纠正。等待。再回来。再使用。
