How to Learn Basic English Vocabulary (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.003 | Learn Words in Phrases, Not Alone | 单词要放进短语和句子里

A word becomes more useful when it learns to live with other words.
一个词和其他词一起工作,才会越来越有用。

← Back to the Basic English Vocabulary Chinese Edition Hub | 返回零基础英语词汇首页

Quick read | 先看最重要的

Do not stop at:

help = 帮助

Go one step further:

  • need help
  • help me
  • Please help me.
  • Can you help me?

不要只背“单词 = 中文”。让单词进入短语,再进入句子。

Why isolated words are weak | 为什么孤立单词很弱?

If you learn only take = 拿, you may not know what to do when you meet:

  • take the bus
  • take a photo
  • take a break
  • take your time

真实英语不是“一个词一个词单独排队”。很多意思来自词和词之间的常见组合。

Cambridge’s English Vocabulary in Use: Elementary teaches everyday verbs through phrases such as have breakfast, go home, make a mistake and take the bus. That is useful for beginners because the word arrives with a job.

What is a phrase? | 什么是短语?

A phrase is a small group of words that works together.

短语就是几个经常一起工作的词。

  • my book
  • cold water
  • go home
  • need help
  • very good
  • at school

A phrase is smaller than a full sentence, but much more useful than one isolated word.

What is a collocation? | 什么是搭配?

A collocation is a word combination that English speakers commonly use together.

搭配就是英语里经常自然地一起出现的词。

For a beginner, you do not need a long theory. Just notice common partnerships.

  • make tea
  • do homework
  • take the bus
  • have breakfast
  • go home

这些组合不能永远靠“中文每个词逐字翻译”来猜。最安全的方法是把常见搭配当成一个小单位学习。

Word → phrase → sentence | 单词 → 短语 → 句子

WordPhraseSentence
waterdrink waterI drink water.
homego homeI want to go home.
helpneed helpI need help.
bookread a bookI read a book.
teamake teaI make tea.
bustake the busI take the bus.
phototake a photoI take a photo.
goodvery goodThis is very good.

这个三步梯子,是零基础词汇非常重要的训练结构。

Do not make every phrase yourself from Chinese | 不要每次都从中文重新拼短语

A beginner may think:

“I know the Chinese words. I will translate each one.”

That can create English that is understandable but unnatural.

更好的方法:遇到一个常见词,就收集它真正高频的英文伙伴。

Start with noun phrases | 先学名词短语

my book我的书
your phone你的手机
a big bag一个大包
cold water冷水
hot tea热茶
good food好吃/好的食物
a small room一个小房间
my family我的家人

名词短语帮助你开始组合“谁的、什么样的、哪一个东西”。

Start with verb phrases | 再学动词短语

go home回家
go to school去学校
come here来这里
need help需要帮助
want water想要水
like tea喜欢茶
read a book读一本书
write your name写你的名字
take the bus坐公交车
make tea泡/做茶
eat rice吃米饭
drink water喝水

Adjective + noun | 形容词 + 名词

big house大房子
small room小房间
new phone新手机
old book旧书
hot food热食
cold water冷水
good idea好主意
bad idea坏主意

同一个形容词可以和很多名词组合。这样一个词会长出很多表达。

Verb + noun | 动词 + 名词

read a book读书
write a message写消息
drink water喝水
eat breakfast吃早餐
make tea泡茶
take a photo拍照
ask a question问问题
give an answer给答案

Verb + small word | 动词 + 小词

Small words change meaning.

look at看着
listen to
wait for
talk to和……说话
come from来自
go to
think about想一想
ask for请求 / 要

不要只记 look、listen、wait,而忽略后面常见的小词。很多英语动词的真实行为就在这些小组合里。

Preposition phrases | 介词短语

at home在家
at school在学校
at work在工作地点
in the room在房间里
on the table在桌上
under the chair在椅子下面
from China来自中国
with my friend和我的朋友一起

初学者不要试图一次把所有介词规则学完。先把高频短语作为小整体使用,再慢慢归纳。

Time phrases | 时间短语

today morning不自然;通常说 this morning
this morning今天早上
at night在夜里
in the morning在早上
every day每天
next week下周
last night昨晚
right now现在 / 此刻

这就是为什么“知道每个单词的中文意思”仍然可能拼出不自然英语。短语本身需要学习。

Sentence frames are vocabulary tools | 句型也是词汇工具

A sentence frame gives a new word a ready place to go.

  • This is a ___.
  • I have a ___.
  • I like ___.
  • I want ___.
  • I need ___.
  • I can ___.
  • I go to ___.
  • Where is ___?
  • Can you help me with ___?
  • This is very ___.

句型稳定后,新词只需要进入一个熟悉位置。这会让输出更容易。

The one-slot method | 一个插槽训练法

Frame:

I need ___.

  • I need water.
  • I need food.
  • I need help.
  • I need money.
  • I need time.

不要一次改整句话。先只换一个位置。

The two-slot method | 两个插槽训练法

Frame:

My ___ is ___.

  • My bag is small.
  • My phone is new.
  • My room is cold.
  • My tea is hot.

当一个插槽稳定后,再让两个位置变化。

Phrase families | 短语家族

GO family

  • go home
  • go to school
  • go to work
  • go there
  • go now
  • go by bus

HAVE family

  • have time
  • have money
  • have breakfast
  • have a question
  • have a problem
  • have a book

TAKE family

  • take the bus
  • take a photo
  • take a break
  • take this
  • take it home

MAKE family

  • make tea
  • make food
  • make a plan
  • make a mistake
  • make a call

一个核心动词如果拥有一小组常见搭配,它的实用价值会大幅增加。

Do and make | 初学者常见搭配区别

Chinese can use one broad verb where English uses different common combinations.

Natural English中文理解
do homework做作业
do the work做工作
do an exercise做练习
make tea泡茶
make a plan做计划
make a mistake犯错误

所以不要只背 do = 做, make = 做。要把常用组合一起收。

Have is bigger than “有” | have 不只等于“有”

  • have a book — 有一本书
  • have breakfast — 吃早餐
  • have time — 有时间
  • have a problem — 有问题
  • have a good day — 祝你今天愉快 / 度过愉快一天

一个高频词通常不是“一个英文 = 一个中文”。它在不同短语里承担不同任务。

Take is bigger than “拿” | take 不只等于“拿”

  • take this — 拿这个
  • take the bus — 坐公交
  • take a photo — 拍照
  • take a break — 休息一下
  • take your time — 慢慢来

如果只记“take = 拿”,后面很多常见短语都会看不懂。

Get is a high-frequency network word | get 是高频网络词

  • get water — 得到/拿水
  • get home — 到家
  • get tired — 变累
  • get better — 变好
  • get a message — 收到消息

零基础不需要一次学完 get 的所有意义。先把最常见、当前最需要的短语一个个加入。

Learn chunks that carry a whole job | 学“整块有功能”的表达

Some expressions are useful as whole chunks.

  • I don’t know.
  • I don’t understand.
  • Please say it again.
  • What does this mean?
  • How do you say this in English?
  • Can you help me?
  • Where is the toilet?
  • How much is this?

这些表达可以先作为完整工具使用,再慢慢分析里面的语法。

Chunk first, analysis later | 有时可以先会用,再分析

A true beginner can use Thank you before understanding every historical or grammatical detail of the phrase.

语言学习不需要等所有理论解释完才开口。对非常高频的功能表达,先理解整体功能、先能用,是合理路线。

But do not memorise scripts blindly | 但不要死背长脚本

A short useful chunk is different from memorising a full conversation you cannot change.

如果只会背:

“Hello, how are you? I am fine, thank you, and you?”

但别人换一个问题就完全停住,说明语言还没有真正分解和迁移。

所以短语学习之后要做替换。

Substitution makes chunks flexible | 替换让短语变灵活

Base:

I need help.

  • I need water.
  • I need time.
  • I need money.

Base:

Where is the bus?

  • Where is the station?
  • Where is my phone?
  • Where is the toilet?

这样你不是死背一个固定句,而是在建立可变化模板。

Personalise every useful phrase | 每个短语都尽量个人化

Textbook phrase: read a book.

Your sentence: I read this book at night.

Textbook phrase: go to work.

Your sentence: I go to work by bus.

和真实生活连接以后,短语会获得更多记忆线索。

Phrase notebook | 短语本怎么记?

Core wordUseful phraseMy sentence
gogo homeI go home at 6.
needneed helpI need help.
taketake the busI take the bus to work.
makemake teaI make tea at home.
looklook at thisLook at this photo.

不要把词汇本设计成“单词墓地”。每个词至少要有一个活的组合。

First 50 beginner chunks | 第一批 50 个基础词块

my nameyour namemy phoneyour bagmy family

look at thislisten to mewait for metalk to mehelp me
at homeat schoolat workin the roomon the table
right nowthis morningat nightevery daynext week

Say the phrase as one small unit | 短语要当成一个小单位说

Do not pause between every word:

“go … home”

Try to hear and say the phrase together:

go home

初学阶段速度不重要,但短语内部要逐渐形成整体感。

Listen for phrases in real English | 听力时也找词块

When watching or listening to beginner material, do not only count single words you know. Listen for combinations.

  • good morning
  • thank you
  • come here
  • go home
  • I don’t know
  • right now

识别词块会减少实时听力里逐词处理的负担。

Reading for phrases | 阅读时不要只圈生词

Beginners often underline only unknown words. Also underline useful known-word combinations.

Text:

“I go to work by bus every day.”

Useful chunks:

  • go to work
  • by bus
  • every day

即使没有任何“难词”,这句话仍然包含值得学习的组合。

Do not collect strange phrases just because they are new | 不要因为“新”就收

A phrase notebook can become cluttered. Keep phrases that are:

  • common
  • useful
  • clear
  • connected to your goals
  • easy to reuse

词汇不是收藏比赛。优先保留会真正再次使用的组合。

The phrase frequency question | 短语也要看常用程度

If you are unsure whether a phrase is natural, check a learner dictionary and authentic examples.

Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries and Cambridge Dictionary often show common example patterns.

不要只相信“中文这样说,所以英语应该也这样拼”。

Mandarin transfer: direct combinations can mislead | 中文直译的组合可能误导

English and Mandarin do not always choose the same verb for the same everyday idea.

IdeaNatural English chunk
坐公交take the bus
拍照take a photo
吃早餐have breakfast
做作业do homework
犯错误make a mistake
问问题ask a question

因此,常用搭配要尽量直接从英语输入中学习。

Do not translate every preposition | 介词不要逐字硬翻

  • at home
  • in the room
  • on the table
  • go to school
  • come from China

介词往往是最不适合逐字对应的部分之一。零基础先学高频短语,会比先背一大页抽象规则更容易。

Sentence frames for nouns | 名词句型

  • This is a ___.
  • That is my ___.
  • I have a ___.
  • Where is the ___?
  • The ___ is here.

Sentence frames for verbs | 动词句型

  • I ___ every day.
  • I want to ___.
  • I need to ___.
  • Can you ___?
  • Please ___.

Sentence frames for adjectives | 形容词句型

  • It is ___.
  • This is very ___.
  • My ___ is ___.
  • The water is ___.
  • I am ___.

同一个词进入不同句型,会让你看见它真正的语法位置。

Build from two words to six words | 从两词扩到六词

  1. hot tea
  2. my hot tea
  3. This is my hot tea.
  4. This is my hot tea here.

不用一次跳到长句。每次只增加一点信息。

Expand with time | 用时间扩句

Base:

I go home.

  • I go home now.
  • I go home at night.
  • I go home after work.

Expand with place | 用地点扩句

Base:

I read.

  • I read at home.
  • I read in my room.
  • I read at school.

Expand with object | 用宾语扩句

Base:

I read.

  • I read a book.
  • I read this book.
  • I read my book.

短语是句子扩展的积木。

Phrase retrieval beats phrase rereading | 短语也要主动提取

Study:

  • go home
  • need help
  • take the bus
  • make tea
  • ask a question

Close the page. Prompt yourself with the core word:

  • go → ?
  • need → ?
  • take → ?
  • make → ?
  • ask → ?

能主动想出搭配,比一直看着搭配更接近真实使用。

Reverse retrieval | 反向提取

Prompt yourself with the noun:

  • bus → take the bus
  • photo → take a photo
  • question → ask a question
  • mistake → make a mistake
  • home → go home

双向提取会让词与词之间的网络更稳定。

Phrase sorting | 短语分类

Put these under the correct verb:

home · a photo · breakfast · homework · tea · a question

  • go ___
  • take ___
  • have ___
  • do ___
  • make ___
  • ask ___

这个练习帮助你学习“谁跟谁经常一起出现”。

Error repair: unnatural combination | 错误修复:词都对,组合不自然

A sentence can contain correct individual words but still sound wrong because the combination is unusual.

例如初学者可能知道每个词,却用错搭配。修复时不要只说“整句错了”,要指出是哪两个词之间的关系需要改变。

Keep one good phrase for every new word | 每个新词至少存一个好短语

New word: station.

Do not store only station = 车站.

Store:

  • bus station
  • train station
  • at the station
  • Where is the station?

一个词有了几个常用邻居,就不再是孤岛。

Build a 100-chunk beginner bank | 建立 100 个基础词块

Do not try to memorise all 100 in one day. Build slowly.

Suggested categories:

  • 20 social/survival chunks
  • 20 home/daily-life chunks
  • 20 verb+noun chunks
  • 20 place/time chunks
  • 20 sentence frames

100 个可提取词块,往往比 500 个完全孤立的“眼熟单词”更容易进入真实交流。

A seven-day phrase plan | 七天短语训练

DayFocusOutput
110 noun phrases10 pointing sentences
210 verb phrases10 action sentences
3adjective+noundescribe 10 things
4place/time phrasesdescribe your day
5sentence frames20 substitutions
6mixed phrase retrievalno list
7one-minute talkuse 15 chunks

Mini dialogue from chunks | 用词块做迷你对话

A: Hello.

B: Hello.

A: What is your name?

B: My name is Lin.

A: Where do you work?

B: I work at home.

A: Do you need help?

B: Yes, please.

这个对话的关键不是背全文,而是看见可以拆出来复用的词块:my name, work at home, need help, yes please.

Read easy texts for reusable chunks | 读简单文本,找可复用组合

Very easy text:

“I get up in the morning. I have breakfast. I go to work by bus. I drink water at work. I go home at six.”

Collect:

  • in the morning
  • have breakfast
  • go to work
  • by bus
  • drink water
  • at work
  • go home

一段很简单的英语,也可以提供大量真正高价值词块。

Do not make the sentence too hard | 不要为了练词汇把句子写得太难

If the target is take the bus, a simple sentence is enough:

I take the bus to work.

不需要为了显得高级,马上写一个包含四个从句的长句。初学阶段先让目标词块稳定。

Meaning must survive the phrase | 进入短语后意思要保持清楚

When a word joins a phrase, its meaning may change or become more specific.

  • take = 拿 / 带 / 乘 / 接受等多个可能
  • take the bus = 乘公交
  • take a photo = 拍照

所以学习短语不是“给单词加装饰”,而是帮助你看见真实意义。

For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

When teaching a new beginner word, ask for one phrase immediately.

Teach:

bus

Then add:

take the bus

Then:

I take the bus.

Keep the progression small. Do not teach ten collocations at once for every new word.

First weak link check | 第一个卡点检查

SymptomLikely weak link
I know the word but cannot use it.No phrase / sentence frame.
I translate word by word.No stored chunk.
My sentence is understandable but sounds strange.Collocation problem.
I know many phrases but freeze in conversation.Retrieval problem.
I can repeat a dialogue but not change it.Transfer problem.

同样叫“词汇问题”,修复方法可能完全不同。

Connect to the wider eduKate vocabulary estate | 连接更大的词汇体系

这一课只保留非常简单的入门版本。更深的搭配、语域和精确度由已有 owner 页面继续负责。

Book and website support | 参考书与网站

What success looks like | 怎样才算这课学会?

Choose 30 common words. Can you:

  • give one useful phrase for each?
  • use 20 in a simple sentence?
  • change one part of the sentence?
  • recognise common collocations when reading?
  • avoid translating every phrase word by word?

如果越来越多能做到,单词正在从孤立节点变成语言网络。

Final rule | 最后一条规则

Do not ask only, “What does this word mean?” Ask, “What does this word usually do with other words?”

不要只问“这个词是什么意思?”还要问:“这个词通常和哪些词一起工作?”

Word → phrase → sentence → new sentence.

单词 → 短语 → 句子 → 换一个新句子。
