Advanced vocabulary becomes truly powerful when you can enter a specialist field without becoming trapped inside it.
高级词汇真正有力量的时候,是你能进入一个专业领域,同时又不会被那个领域困住。

A finance learner may know liquidity, leverage, exposure, yield. A science learner may know replication, variance, catalyst, equilibrium. A technology learner may know latency, throughput, deployment, redundancy. An education learner may know retrieval, scaffolding, misconception, formative assessment. These words are valuable—but specialised knowledge alone does not automatically produce advanced English.

专业术语解决“这个领域在谈什么”。高级英语还要解决另一层:你能不能定义、比较、限定、解释因果、表达不确定性、讨论证据、说明风险、指出限制、提出建议?如果只能在熟悉话题里背出术语,一换领域就失去表达能力,这仍然不是稳定的 C1–C2 词汇系统。

Cambridge’s research on the English Vocabulary Profile notes that advanced learners increasingly acquire vocabulary relevant to their specific field of study, work or interest, while still relying on a common core of general and academic English. I. S. P. Nation likewise describes a progression from general high-frequency vocabulary toward academic vocabulary and then more specialised vocabulary for particular fields. Oxford’s academic resources show another important point: many academic words and phrases are shared across disciplines, while their frequencies, collocations and meanings can differ by subject area.

Do not build one giant vocabulary list. Build layers.

不要建一张越来越长的大词表。要建“词汇层”。

This lesson owns the Mandarin-supported C1–C2 route for domain-specific vocabulary and transfer. It does not replace Lesson No.007 on function-based academic/professional vocabulary, Lesson No.009 on corpus evidence, Lesson No.013 on specialist senses of familiar words, or Lesson No.018 on lexical bundles and sentence frames. Here the learner problem is different: how to specialise without losing a transferable English operating system.


1. Build three vocabulary layers | 先建立三层词汇架构

Advanced learners need all three. Layer 3 without Layer 2 produces technical naming without flexible reasoning. Layer 2 without Layer 3 produces polished generalities without subject precision.

2. Layer 1 is not “basic vocabulary to forget” | 核心词汇不是低级词,可以被丢掉

Oxford’s core word lists emphasise high-frequency vocabulary because frequent words continue to carry large amounts of communication even at advanced levels. A specialist who cannot explain a concept using ordinary words has fragile knowledge.

For example:

Liquidity — how easily an asset can be converted into cash without causing a large loss in value.

The technical noun is advanced. The explanation relies mostly on common vocabulary.

能够“降级解释”说明你真的掌握了术语,而不是只记住标签。

3. Layer 2 is the transferable reasoning layer | 第二层是最重要的“迁移层”

Cross-domain vocabulary includes words and phrases for:

  • definition;
  • classification;
  • comparison;
  • cause and effect;
  • evidence;
  • uncertainty;
  • limitations;
  • criteria;
  • risk;
  • trade-offs;
  • recommendation;
  • implementation;
  • measurement;
  • evaluation.

These functions appear in finance, science, engineering, education, medicine, policy and technology. The nouns may change; the reasoning architecture survives.

4. Layer 3 should be learned conceptually, not alphabetically | 专业术语不要按字母表背

Weak finance list:

asset, bond, credit, duration, equity, futures, inflation, leverage, liquidity…

Stronger structure:

  • Assets: equity, bond, cash, commodity;
  • Risk: volatility, exposure, default, drawdown;
  • Financing: leverage, debt, equity;
  • Market functioning: liquidity, spread, volume;
  • Returns: yield, capital gain, income.

Concept structure creates retrieval paths.

5. A glossary is not a knowledge system | 术语表不是知识系统

A glossary tells you what a term means. A domain vocabulary system also tells you:

  • what broader category it belongs to;
  • what it contrasts with;
  • what causes it;
  • what it affects;
  • what verbs act on it;
  • what adjectives classify it;
  • what measurement units or indicators accompany it;
  • what misconceptions surround it.

That is the difference between memorising terminology and being able to reason with it.

6. Build concept → term, not only term → definition | 从概念提取术语,比术语背定义更重要

Prompt:

“The ability to sell an asset quickly without causing a large price change.”

Target: liquidity.

Prompt:

“A system component that can take over if another component fails.”

Target: redundancy in an engineering/system context.

Meaning → term retrieval is productive expertise.

7. Then train term → plain explanation | 再做反向:术语→普通英语

  • latency → delay between input/request and response;
  • scaffolding → temporary support that helps a learner perform a task they cannot yet do independently;
  • variance → amount of spread around a mean in a statistical setting;
  • leverage → use of borrowed resources/capital to increase exposure, depending on context.

If you cannot explain the term without the term, your knowledge may still be circular.

8. Learn domain terms with their verbs | 术语要连“发生什么动作”一起学

Finance:

  • manage exposure;
  • hedge risk;
  • raise capital;
  • issue debt;
  • price an asset;
  • rebalance a portfolio.

Science:

  • formulate a hypothesis;
  • control a variable;
  • replicate a finding;
  • measure variance;
  • observe a reaction.

Technology:

  • deploy a service;
  • reduce latency;
  • increase throughput;
  • scale infrastructure;
  • mitigate failure risk.

The verb network turns nouns into operations.

9. Learn domain terms with their adjectives | 再连“它通常是什么性质”一起学

  • high liquidity / low liquidity;
  • systemic risk;
  • empirical evidence;
  • statistical variance;
  • distributed system;
  • formative assessment;
  • diagnostic feedback;
  • operational constraint.

Adjectives classify the domain concept and often carry specialised meaning.

10. Learn domain terms with their prepositions and complement patterns | 术语也有固定结构

  • exposure to risk;
  • correlation between variables;
  • variance in outcomes;
  • constraint on capacity;
  • susceptible to failure;
  • consistent with the model.

11. Specialised words often have specialised senses | 熟词进入专业领域以后,也会出现“专业义”

Examples:

  • power — general ability / statistical power / physical power;
  • stress — psychological pressure / mechanical stress;
  • field — area of study / mathematical or physical field;
  • culture — social practices / biological culture;
  • control — manage/regulate / experimental control condition;
  • model — representation / mathematical/statistical model.

Lesson No.013’s familiar-word alarm should activate whenever the text enters a specialist domain.

12. Do not assume the technical sense is “more correct” | 专业义不是普通义的升级版

Significant may mean statistically significant in one research context and important/notable elsewhere. Power in physics is not a superior meaning to political power or personal power. Domains select different senses.

Advanced vocabulary requires sense switching, not sense hierarchy.

13. Distinguish term, concept and label | 术语、概念、标签要分开

A term is the language label. A concept is the underlying idea. Different communities may use different labels for overlapping concepts; the same term may carry different definitions across subfields.

When the distinction matters, record:

  • term;
  • working definition;
  • field/subfield;
  • source;
  • contrast term;
  • example.

不要把“记住名词”误当成“掌握概念”。

14. Build definitions at three depths | 每个重要术语准备三层解释

  • Support: scaffolding, prompting, feedback;
  • Error: misconception, slip, misunderstanding.

Category membership reduces random memorisation.

16. Build contrast maps | 专业学习最需要“边界词”

  • accuracy vs precision;
  • correlation vs causation;
  • reliability vs validity;
  • liquidity vs solvency;
  • latency vs throughput;
  • formative vs summative assessment;
  • symptom vs sign;
  • revenue vs profit.

Specialist competence depends heavily on knowing where related concepts stop overlapping.

17. Build causal maps | 这个术语会导致什么?又受什么影响?

Example: latency.

  • may be increased by network distance, congestion, processing delay;
  • may affect user-perceived responsiveness;
  • may be reduced through caching or architecture changes, depending on system.

Do not memorise causal claims without domain evidence. The exercise is to build a verified conceptual network.

18. Build measurement maps | 专业词汇经常和测量方式绑定

  • latency → milliseconds;
  • throughput → operations/data per unit time;
  • volatility → statistical/market measures;
  • accuracy → proportion or error-based metrics depending on task;
  • temperature → degrees on a defined scale;
  • reliability → coefficient/consistency measures depending on field.

Measurement language converts vague understanding into operational understanding.

19. Build misconception maps | 每个领域都要收集“看起来对、其实错”的概念

Examples:

  • correlation proves causation — false;
  • high revenue means high profit — false;
  • more practice always means better learning — too broad;
  • low latency automatically means high throughput — false;
  • statistical significance automatically means practical importance — false.

A domain vocabulary system should protect conceptual boundaries, not just increase term count.

20. Learn acronyms only after the full concept | 缩写不能先于概念

Do not collect acronym-heavy notes that you cannot expand.

  • ROI → return on investment;
  • API → application programming interface;
  • RCT → randomised controlled trial;
  • GDP → gross domestic product.

Then add what the concept actually measures or does.

缩写只是压缩,不是理解。

21. Learn abbreviations with register and audience | 专业缩写要看读者

Within a specialist team, an acronym may be efficient. For a general audience, spell it out and define it. In formal writing, follow field conventions.

Advanced communication means knowing when shared specialist shorthand is actually shared.

22. Domain vocabulary should have a “public explanation” route | 每个专业词最好准备一个“公众版解释”

Technical:

The portfolio has high duration exposure.

General explanation:

The portfolio is relatively sensitive to changes in interest rates.

Exact meaning depends on the technical context, but the ability to explain the relationship is transferable communication skill.

23. Build “specialist ↔ general” pairs | 做专业英语与普通英语双向转换

  • mitigate risk ↔ reduce the severity/probability of risk;
  • allocate capital ↔ decide where available money/resources should be assigned;
  • replicate a finding ↔ obtain a similar result in a new study;
  • deploy a service ↔ release/run the service in its target environment;
  • formative assessment ↔ assessment used to guide further learning during the process.

Bidirectional control prevents domain vocabulary from becoming opaque jargon.

24. Build “specialist ↔ cross-domain” pairs | 再把术语接到跨领域推理词

Science:

  • The hypothesis predicts that…
  • The observed variation may be explained by…
  • A key limitation of the experiment is…

Technology:

  • Latency increases when…
  • The bottleneck occurs at…
  • One trade-off between X and Y is…

26. Use the “same reasoning, new domain” transfer test | 最重要的迁移测试:同一种思考,换一个领域

Reasoning function: constraint.

  • Finance: capital constraints limit expansion.
  • Engineering: thermal constraints limit performance.
  • Education: time constraints limit feedback depth.
  • Medicine: eligibility constraints limit treatment options.

The domain nouns change. The cross-domain reasoning pattern remains.

27. Transfer test 2 — risk | 迁移测试二:risk

  • credit risk;
  • clinical risk;
  • security risk;
  • implementation risk;
  • reputational risk.

Now practise:

  • identify the risk;
  • estimate its likelihood/impact;
  • mitigate it;
  • monitor it;
  • state residual uncertainty.

One reasoning network transfers across fields.

28. Transfer test 3 — evidence | 迁移测试三:evidence

  • empirical evidence;
  • clinical evidence;
  • forensic evidence;
  • documentary evidence;
  • market evidence.

Cross-domain questions:

  • What is the source?
  • How strong is it?
  • What claim does it support?
  • What does it not establish?
  • What alternative explanations remain?

This is advanced vocabulary becoming epistemic discipline.

29. Transfer test 4 — trade-off | 迁移测试四:trade-off

  • return vs risk;
  • speed vs accuracy;
  • latency vs resource use;
  • support vs independence;
  • cost vs resilience.

Transfer vocabulary lets you recognise structural similarities across very different domains.

30. Transfer test 5 — threshold | 迁移测试五:threshold

  • statistical threshold;
  • risk threshold;
  • eligibility threshold;
  • performance threshold;
  • detection threshold.

Cross-domain concept: a boundary beyond which classification/action changes.

31. Transfer vocabulary reduces jargon dependence | 跨领域词汇可以防止“离开术语就不会解释”

A specialist should be able to move:

technical term → cross-domain concept → plain English → technical term

Example:

throughput → performance capacity → how much work the system can process per unit time → throughput

This movement is a stronger sign of expertise than term recall alone.

32. Build a domain term bank with fields, not two columns | 专业词库不要只有“术语—中文”两栏

33. Add “transfer hook” to every term | 每个专业词都加一条“迁移钩子”

Transfer hook answers: what general reasoning concept does this connect to?

  • liquidity → availability + transaction friction;
  • redundancy → resilience + backup;
  • scaffolding → temporary support + independence;
  • variance → spread + uncertainty;
  • latency → delay + performance.

The transfer hook lets the mind reuse structural knowledge.

34. Add “domain boundary” too | 再加一条“领域边界”

Some terms look transferable but change meaning across fields.

  • control;
  • power;
  • model;
  • significance;
  • stress;
  • yield;
  • exposure.

Write the subfield next to the sense. This prevents accidental cross-domain sense transfer.

35. Use domain corpora and high-quality texts | 专业词频与搭配,要从专业语料里看

A general web corpus can show broad English usage. A domain corpus or high-quality specialist collection can show what is conventional inside your field.

Questions:

  • Which verbs occur with this term?
  • Which adjectives classify it?
  • Which terms co-occur nearby?
  • Is the term mostly spoken, written or technical?
  • Is this phrase common across fields or specific to one?

36. Oxford academic corpora show subject variation | 学术英语本身也有“学科差异”

Oxford’s Learner’s Dictionary of Academic English is based on a large academic corpus spanning humanities, social sciences, life sciences and physical sciences. Its design reflects an important fact: the same general academic word can behave differently across subject areas.

Therefore, do not assume “academic English” is one uniform vocabulary.

37. OPAL gives the cross-domain layer | OPAL 更适合帮助建立跨学科核心

Oxford OPAL draws from spoken and written academic corpora across multiple subject areas. Use it for broadly useful academic words and phrases. Then add domain terminology from your specialist sources.

This creates a clean division of labour:

  • OPAL/general academic resources → transferable language;
  • field textbooks/journals/glossaries → specialist terminology;
  • your own output/errors → personal priority.

38. English Vocabulary Profile is a core guide, not an exhaustive specialist syllabus | EVP 是核心参考,不是专业词库全集

Cambridge’s English Vocabulary Profile research explicitly notes that advanced learners acquire vocabulary specific to their field and that a general C1–C2 resource cannot be exhaustive across all domains.

Use CEFR vocabulary resources to secure the shared core, not to decide that every term absent from a list is “too advanced” or unnecessary.

39. Prioritise terms by task frequency | 专业词优先级跟着任务走

Rank a term higher when you:

  • meet it frequently;
  • must produce it in your job/study;
  • need it to understand a central concept;
  • need it to distinguish two important ideas;
  • cannot paraphrase the concept efficiently without it.

Rank it lower when it is rare, peripheral or easy to look up when needed.

40. Use the “must recognise / must explain / must produce” triage | 专业词也要分三个掌握等级

  • Must recognise: understand when reading/listening.
  • Must explain: define in plain English.
  • Must produce: use accurately in speaking/writing.

Not every technical term needs full productive mastery.

41. Do not confuse rarity with expertise | 生僻不等于专业

A rare term may be peripheral jargon. A common word such as model, control, power may carry a central specialist meaning. Expertise comes from conceptual relevance and accurate use, not word obscurity.

42. Do not confuse jargon density with professionalism | 行话多,不等于专业

Weak specialist writing can hide behind nouns and acronyms. Strong specialist writing uses the exact technical term where necessary and plain English where possible.

Technical accuracy and accessibility can coexist.

43. Define the term when audience knowledge is uncertain | 不确定读者懂不懂,就第一次出现时定义

A strong pattern:

Latency, the delay between a request and the system’s response, increased during peak load.

After the first definition, the specialist term can carry the concept efficiently.

44. Teach the term with a non-example | 专业概念必须有“不是它”的例子

Term: liquidity.

Example: an asset that can be sold quickly with little price impact.

Non-example: a highly profitable asset that is difficult to sell quickly.

The non-example prevents the learner from confusing liquidity with profitability.

45. Teach the term through contrastive scenarios | 用对比场景代替单一释义

Term pair: latency / throughput.

  • System A begins responding quickly but handles few requests per second.
  • System B takes longer to begin each response but processes many requests overall.

Now the learner sees why the two performance dimensions are not identical.

46. Teach specialist collocation through decisions | 专业搭配也要变成“选择问题”

Which is more natural in the field?

  • mitigate risk / decrease risk;
  • raise capital / collect capital;
  • conduct an experiment / do an experiment in formal writing;
  • deploy a service / publish a service;
  • administer an assessment / give an assessment depending on context.

Use domain corpora and authoritative sources to verify.

47. Transfer through analogy carefully | 跨领域类比很强,但不能硬套

You may notice structural similarities:

  • bottleneck in a network;
  • bottleneck in production;
  • bottleneck in a learning process.

This can support understanding. But do not assume every causal property transfers. Analogy is a thinking aid, not evidence.

48. Transfer through explanation, not forced metaphor | 迁移最好靠结构解释,不靠强行比喻

Say:

Both systems have a limiting stage that constrains total performance.

Then use bottleneck if the metaphor fits. Keep the shared relation explicit.

49. Build “domain rotation” practice | 同一个思考功能,轮换四个领域

Function: state a limitation.

  • Finance: A key limitation of the model is that liquidity can change rapidly under stress.
  • Science: A key limitation of the experiment is the small sample.
  • Technology: A key limitation of the benchmark is that it excludes peak-load conditions.
  • Education: A key limitation of the assessment is that it measures recognition more than free recall.

The frame remains. Domain knowledge changes.

50. Build “same term, new audience” practice | 同一术语,换三种读者

Term: variance.

  • Beginner: how spread out the values are.
  • Professional non-specialist: a measure of how much observations vary around the average.
  • Specialist: use the technical definition/notation appropriate to the field.

Audience adaptation confirms conceptual depth.

51. Build “same term, new modality” practice | 同一术语,写作和口语都要会用

Written:

Higher latency reduced the responsiveness of the service.

Spoken explanation:

The service felt slower because there was more delay before it responded.

Both belong in an advanced learner’s repertoire.

52. Build “domain escape” drills | 防止 topic-bound:定期做“逃离领域”训练

Take one specialised paragraph and remove all technical nouns. Explain the structure using cross-domain language.

Example skeleton:

A limiting factor reduces performance. The effect becomes larger under certain conditions. One intervention reduces the risk but introduces another trade-off.

Then rebuild the paragraph in another field with different terminology.

53. Worked case: Maren knows education vocabulary but cannot explain finance | 案例一:Maren 只在熟悉领域流利

Maren can discuss retrieval practice confidently: spacing, retrieval strength, feedback, transfer. She then reads a finance paragraph about liquidity constraints and becomes silent because the nouns are unfamiliar.

Her tutor does not begin with twenty finance terms. They first extract the cross-domain structure:

  • a resource is limited;
  • that limit reduces available options;
  • stress makes the limitation more severe;
  • one response can reduce risk but create another cost.

Maren already knows constraint, risk, trade-off, available, reduce, severe. Finance terminology is then attached to an existing reasoning network.

54. Worked case: Iona knows terms but cannot explain them simply | 案例二:Iona 会术语,不会解释

Iona reads research papers and can use validity, reliability, external validity, confound. When asked to explain them to a parent, she repeats definitions containing more specialist nouns.

Her tutor imposes a constraint: explain each term using mostly Oxford 3000-level common vocabulary where possible. The exact word list is not the goal; plain language is.

For example:

External validity → whether the result is likely to hold for people or situations beyond the ones studied.

Iona’s specialist knowledge becomes more usable because she can now move between levels of abstraction.

55. Worked case: Leonie imports a technical sense into general English | 案例三:Leonie 把专业义带错领域

Leonie learns significant in statistics and begins treating it as “statistically significant” everywhere. In a meeting, someone says “a significant delay” and she searches for a p-value.

Repair: label the senses by domain.

  • general significant = important/notable/large enough to matter depending on context;
  • statistical significance = technical inferential meaning defined by statistical procedure.

57. Build a domain map before a word list | 新领域先画“概念地图”,再建词表

For a new field, identify:

  • main objects/entities;
  • main processes;
  • main measurements;
  • main risks/problems;
  • main decisions;
  • main evidence types;
  • main contrasts;
  • main outcomes.

Then collect vocabulary inside the map.

58. Use “20 anchor terms” rather than 200 random terms | 初入新领域,先抓二十个锚点术语

Select 20 terms that unlock the field’s structure. Each anchor term should connect to multiple other concepts.

For each anchor:

  • define it;
  • contrast it;
  • use it in a frame;
  • connect three related terms;
  • explain one misconception.

Twenty deep anchors can outperform 200 shallow definitions.

59. Then expand through concept neighbours | 从锚点向邻近概念扩展

Anchor: risk.

  • probability;
  • impact;
  • exposure;
  • mitigation;
  • threshold;
  • residual risk;
  • monitoring.

Now the vocabulary grows as a system.

Concept family: evidence quality.

  • reliability;
  • validity;
  • bias;
  • confounding;

  • uncertainty.

These words do not share one root, but they participate in the same reasoning system.

When reading a specialist article, mark:

  • T = technical term;
  • C = contrast term;
  • V = verb that acts on term;
  • M = measurement;
  • R = reasoning word;
  • F = useful frame;
  • S = specialist sense of familiar word.

This annotation extracts structure, not just novelty.

62. Use listening to harvest spoken specialist language | 专业口语也有自己的高频表达

Lectures, meetings and interviews contain spoken frames that may be less dense than journal writing:

  • what we are seeing is…
  • the main driver here is…
  • the key thing to watch is…
  • if you look at the data…
  • the trade-off is between…

Specialise your terminology. Keep your reasoning transferable.

Learn the exact term when precision requires it. Learn the collocation when the field uses it conventionally. Learn the acronym when the community genuinely relies on it. But keep the ability to explain, compare, question, qualify and transfer.

A strong specialist can talk to another specialist. A stronger communicator can also explain the same system to a colleague from another field, a student, a parent or a general reader without destroying the concept.

That is the difference between owning terminology and being owned by it.
