How to Learn Advanced English Vocabulary (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.007 | Build Academic and Professional Vocabulary by Function, Not Word Lists | 第007课:按功能建立学术与专业词汇

Academic vocabulary becomes useful when it helps you do intellectual work.
学术词汇真正有价值,不是因为它“看起来高级”,而是因为它能帮你完成思考任务。

Many advanced learners approach academic vocabulary as a prestige list: abstract nouns, formal verbs, difficult adjectives, long Latinate words. They memorise constitute, facilitate, substantial, implication, criterion, framework, subsequent, notwithstanding. The list grows. Yet when they need to explain evidence, qualify a claim, compare two mechanisms or state a limitation, the words do not assemble themselves into useful language.

很多高级学习者把学术词汇当成“大词清单”:词越来越正式,词越来越长,看起来越来越像论文。但是一到真正需要解释证据、比较机制、限制结论、提出建议时,语言还是组织不起来。

The stronger model is functional:

Do not ask first, “Which academic word should I learn?” Ask, “What academic or professional job must the language perform?”

先不要问“我应该背哪个学术词”。先问:“这段语言到底要完成什么任务?”

This approach is consistent with major academic-vocabulary resources. Oxford’s OPAL organises important academic words and phrases for both writing and speaking, with phrase lists grouped by function. The University of Manchester Academic Phrasebank similarly organises language around functions such as defining terms, comparing and contrasting, being cautious, explaining causality, reporting results and discussing findings.

本课不会复制这些资源,也不会把它们变成模板库。本课做的是另一件事:把这些思想转化成一条适合中文母语 C1–C2 学习者的学习路线。

1. Academic vocabulary is not one register | 学术词汇不是“一种语气”

Academic English includes lectures, seminar discussion, textbooks, research papers, essays, reports, posters, presentations and examinations. Professional English includes meetings, technical documents, project updates, proposals, audits, emails, policy papers and decisions. These settings overlap, but they do not use language identically.

所以“学术词汇”不是一套固定大词。不同场景需要不同密度、不同正式程度、不同词块。

Oxford’s OPAL explicitly separates academic spoken words and phrases from academic written words and phrases. That distinction is important: spoken academic English often needs signposting and interaction; written academic English often needs compact qualification, evidence relations and precise noun phrases.

高级学习者应该建立“功能 + 场景”的双层词汇系统。

2. Build function shelves, not alphabetical shelves | 不要按字母收词,按“功能”收词

Real communication does not begin with A, B or C. It begins with a purpose.

FunctionLanguage job
Definestate what a concept means
Classifyplace things into categories
Compareshow similarity/difference
Causeexplain why something happens
Evidenceconnect claim to support
Qualifyreduce overstatement / limit scope
Evaluatejudge quality, strength or relevance
Limitstate constraints, caveats or boundaries
Trenddescribe change over time
Recommendpropose action
Decidecompare options and reach choice
Concludereturn from evidence to final interpretation

Once your vocabulary is organised this way, retrieval becomes easier because the cue resembles the real task.

3. Function 1 — Define precisely | 功能一:精准定义

Useful routes:

  • X refers to…
  • X can be defined as…
  • By X, we mean…
  • In this context, X refers specifically to…
  • X is used here to describe…
  • For the purposes of this discussion, X means…

The advanced move is not simply using a formal verb. It is controlling scope. In this context and for the purposes of this discussion tell the reader that the definition is operational rather than universal.

中文母语学习者常把“X 是……”直接翻成 “X is…”。这当然可以,但学术写作经常需要更清楚地说明:这是普遍定义,还是本文中的工作定义?

4. Function 2 — Classify | 功能二:分类

  • can be divided into…
  • falls into three broad categories
  • can be classified according to…
  • belongs to a wider group of…
  • distinguish between A and B
  • can be grouped by function / origin / mechanism / outcome

Classification vocabulary is powerful because it changes how you think. Saying “there are three types of failure” forces you to specify the organizing principle.

高级表达不是只把句子拉长,而是让分类规则更清楚。

5. Function 3 — Compare and contrast | 功能三:比较与对照

JobUseful routes
Similaritysimilarly; comparable to; broadly consistent with; shares several features with
Differenceby contrast; differs from; in contrast to; whereas
Degreesubstantially greater than; marginally lower than; broadly similar to
Dimensionwith respect to; in terms of; along this dimension

Do not rotate however, nevertheless, whereas, conversely merely to avoid repetition. Each has grammatical and rhetorical behaviour of its own.

比较词汇的高级程度,不在于连接词数量,而在于你是否把“比较哪个维度”说清楚。

6. Function 4 — Explain causality | 功能四:解释因果

Cause vocabulary must match mechanism and evidence.

  • cause
  • lead to
  • result in
  • contribute to
  • trigger
  • give rise to
  • be associated with
  • be attributable to
  • stem from
  • arise from
  • mediate
  • moderate

These are not stylistic alternatives. Cause is stronger than be associated with. Contribute to allows multiple causes. Trigger highlights initiation. Stem from describes origin.

学术词汇真正重要的地方,是它会改变事实主张的强度。

7. Function 5 — Report evidence | 功能五:报告证据

  • the evidence suggests…
  • the findings indicate…
  • the data show…
  • the results demonstrate…
  • the evidence provides support for…
  • the findings are consistent with…
  • there is limited evidence for…
  • there is insufficient evidence to establish…

Notice the movement from evidence to claim. Advanced vocabulary controls the strength of that bridge.

中文“研究表明”不应该永远自动变成 research proves. 很多研究只支持 suggests, indicates, is consistent with 这样的表达。

8. Function 6 — Attribute ideas to sources | 功能六:把观点归属给来源

  • X argues that…
  • X proposes that…
  • X suggests that…
  • X observes that…
  • X notes that…
  • X maintains that…
  • X questions whether…
  • X challenges the assumption that…

Reporting verbs encode stance. Argues suggests a defended position. Notes is lighter. Maintains may imply continued assertion. Challenges actively disputes.

不要把所有 “作者说” 都翻成 says,也不要把所有正式表达都换成 states. 先判断作者在做什么。

9. Function 7 — Qualify claims | 功能七:限制主张强度

Academic and professional English often needs calibrated claims rather than absolute statements.

  • may
  • might
  • appears to
  • seems to
  • tends to
  • is likely to
  • in many cases
  • under certain conditions
  • to some extent
  • broadly speaking
  • in part
  • cannot be ruled out

These are not signs of weak writing. Appropriate qualification is a sign that the writer understands the limits of evidence.

中文学习者有时担心 may、might、appears to 会让文章“不够肯定”。实际上,证据有限时,谨慎才更专业。

10. Function 8 — State certainty carefully | 功能八:控制确定程度

StrengthPossible wording
very cautiousmay; might; could conceivably
plausibleappears to; seems to; a plausible explanation is
likelyis likely to; probably
strong evidencestrongly suggests; provides compelling evidence
well establishedis well established; the evidence demonstrates

This is not a fixed numerical scale. The table is a teaching map. Real wording depends on genre, evidence and disciplinary convention.

高级学术词汇要会“调音量”。

11. Function 9 — State limitations | 功能九:说明限制

  • one limitation is…
  • a key constraint is…
  • the analysis is limited by…
  • the findings should be interpreted in light of…
  • an important caveat is…
  • the scope of the conclusion is limited to…
  • the method does not account for…
  • this analysis cannot establish whether…

Do not treat limitation, constraint, caveat, drawback, weakness as interchangeable. Lesson No.006 explains the precision problem; this lesson places them inside academic function.

12. Function 10 — Evaluate quality | 功能十:评价质量

Evaluation vocabulary should identify the dimension being judged.

DimensionUseful vocabulary
Evidencestrong, limited, compelling, inconclusive
Methodrigorous, robust, appropriate, flawed
Explanationplausible, coherent, incomplete, speculative
Systemefficient, reliable, scalable, fragile
Recommendationfeasible, practical, proportionate, cost-effective

“Good study” is low-resolution. “Methodologically rigorous but limited in external validity” tells the reader much more.

高级专业词汇不是为了显得聪明,而是为了把评价标准说清楚。

13. Function 11 — Describe trends | 功能十一:描述趋势

  • increase / rise / grow
  • surge / soar
  • decline / fall / decrease
  • drop sharply
  • remain stable
  • plateau
  • fluctuate
  • recover
  • rebound
  • accelerate / decelerate

Add degree and rate:

  • gradually
  • steadily
  • slightly
  • substantially
  • sharply
  • dramatically
  • marginally

Precise trend vocabulary separates direction, magnitude and speed.

14. Function 12 — Describe quantity | 功能十二:描述数量与范围

  • a substantial proportion of
  • a relatively small number of
  • the majority of
  • a minority of
  • a broad range of
  • a limited set of
  • approximately
  • roughly
  • nearly
  • slightly more than
  • well below

Quantity language often looks simple, but it carries precision. Avoid writing many when the evidence allows a more useful quantitative description.

15. Function 13 — Give examples | 功能十三:举例

  • for example
  • for instance
  • such as
  • including
  • one example is…
  • this can be seen in…
  • consider the case of…
  • to illustrate…

Do not force variation. For example is not weak because it is common. Choose another route only when the rhetorical function changes.

自然学术英语不是不断换连接词,而是让每个连接词做对工作。

16. Function 14 — Explain method | 功能十四:解释方法

  • the analysis uses…
  • the method involves…
  • participants were selected according to…
  • the sample was divided into…
  • the model controls for…
  • the procedure was designed to…
  • the approach allows us to…
  • the measure captures…

Method vocabulary is functional language for telling the reader what was done and why.

不要把方法段落写成名词堆积。只要动作更清楚,动词往往更好。

17. Function 15 — Report results | 功能十五:报告结果

  • the results show…
  • the analysis found…
  • the data indicate…
  • a significant difference was observed…
  • no clear relationship was found…
  • the effect was small but consistent…
  • the pattern remained stable across…

Reporting results is different from interpreting results. Advanced writers keep those functions distinct when needed.

“发生了什么”和“这意味着什么”不是同一个语言任务。

18. Function 16 — Interpret findings | 功能十六:解释结果意味着什么

  • this suggests that…
  • one interpretation is…
  • a plausible explanation is…
  • the pattern may reflect…
  • the findings are consistent with…
  • the result may be attributable to…
  • the finding should not be taken to imply…

Interpretation vocabulary must remain proportionate to the data.

19. Function 17 — Be critical without becoming vague | 功能十七:批判性表达,但不要只写“我不同意”

Useful critical vocabulary identifies the failure mechanism.

  • overlooks
  • underestimates
  • assumes without establishing
  • does not account for
  • rests on a questionable assumption
  • overstates the evidence
  • conflates A with B
  • fails to distinguish between…
  • is difficult to reconcile with…
  • is limited by…

This is stronger than “this argument is bad” because it specifies the problem.

20. Function 18 — Concede before qualifying | 功能十八:承认一部分,再限制另一部分

  • although X, Y…
  • while it is true that…,
  • admittedly,…
  • this is useful, but…
  • the argument is persuasive in one respect; however,…
  • the evidence supports the general direction, but not the stronger claim that…

Concession vocabulary helps advanced writers avoid false binary thinking.

高级批判不是“全对/全错”。语言应该能表达“这一部分成立,但另一部分需要收窄”。

21. Function 19 — Recommend action | 功能十九:提出建议

  • recommend
  • propose
  • advise
  • suggest
  • prioritise
  • consider
  • implement
  • adopt
  • revise
  • defer

Recommendation language should distinguish between idea generation, formal recommendation and actual execution.

Consider does not mean implement. Propose does not mean approve. Professional vocabulary maps decision stages.

22. Function 20 — Evaluate feasibility | 功能二十:评估可行性

  • feasible
  • practical
  • viable
  • scalable
  • affordable
  • sustainable
  • proportionate
  • cost-effective
  • operationally realistic

These are not synonyms. A plan can be technically feasible but financially unviable. It can be viable at small scale but not scalable.

高级职场英语要会把“可以做吗?”拆成多个维度。

23. Function 21 — Discuss risk | 功能二十一:讨论风险

  • identify a risk
  • assess risk
  • estimate likelihood
  • evaluate severity
  • reduce exposure
  • mitigate risk
  • address vulnerability
  • manage uncertainty
  • accept residual risk
  • monitor emerging risk

Professional vocabulary becomes powerful when it mirrors the actual workflow of decision-making.

24. Function 22 — Explain constraints | 功能二十二:说明约束条件

  • budget constraint
  • time constraint
  • capacity constraint
  • regulatory restriction
  • resource limitation
  • dependency
  • bottleneck
  • boundary condition

Each term represents a different model of why options are limited.

“有限制”不是一个足够精确的专业判断。限制来自哪里?是规则、资源、能力还是流程瓶颈?

25. Function 23 — State priorities | 功能二十三:说明优先级

  • primary objective
  • key priority
  • immediate priority
  • long-term priority
  • take precedence over
  • rank ahead of
  • deprioritise
  • allocate resources accordingly

Priority vocabulary makes trade-offs explicit.

26. Function 24 — Discuss trade-offs | 功能二十四:讨论取舍

  • trade-off
  • at the expense of
  • balance A against B
  • weigh the benefits against the costs
  • accept a short-term cost for a long-term gain
  • optimise for
  • compromise between

Advanced professional English often concerns competing objectives, not isolated “good” and “bad” choices.

27. Function 25 — Make decisions | 功能二十五:做决策

  • consider alternatives
  • evaluate options
  • assess feasibility
  • reach a decision
  • approve
  • reject
  • defer
  • revise
  • reverse
  • proceed with

Each verb corresponds to a stage in the decision process. Learn the workflow, not merely the translations.

28. Function 26 — Assign responsibility | 功能二十六:分配责任

  • be responsible for
  • be accountable for
  • assign responsibility
  • delegate
  • retain oversight
  • take ownership of
  • clarify roles
  • define responsibilities

Responsibility, accountability, ownership, oversight overlap but are not identical. Professional precision matters because unclear words can create unclear expectations.

29. Function 27 — Track progress | 功能二十七:跟踪进展

  • monitor progress
  • track performance
  • measure outcomes
  • review milestones
  • identify deviations
  • revise the timeline
  • remain on schedule
  • fall behind schedule

These phrases become active faster when connected to real project or study planning.

30. Function 28 — Explain a process | 功能二十八:解释流程

  • the process begins with…
  • the next stage involves…
  • this is followed by…
  • at this point…
  • the output then becomes the input for…
  • the process concludes when…

Professional explanation depends on sequence vocabulary and action verbs, not simply abstract nouns.

31. Function 29 — Explain systems | 功能二十九:解释系统

  • component
  • input
  • output
  • feedback
  • interaction
  • dependency
  • constraint
  • interface
  • failure mode
  • bottleneck

System vocabulary transfers across engineering, organisations, education, economics and technology.

这类跨领域词汇特别值得主动化,因为迁移价值很高。

32. Function 30 — Explain uncertainty | 功能三十:解释不确定性

  • uncertain
  • unknown
  • ambiguous
  • variable
  • volatile
  • unpredictable
  • subject to uncertainty
  • cannot be determined from the available evidence

These words diagnose different forms of not-knowing. Unknown is not the same as uncertain; ambiguous concerns interpretation; volatile concerns unstable change.

33. Function 31 — Explain assumptions | 功能三十一:说明假设

  • assume that…
  • underlying assumption
  • reasonable assumption
  • working assumption
  • implicit assumption
  • questionable assumption
  • the analysis rests on the assumption that…
  • relax the assumption

Assumption vocabulary is central to academic reasoning because every model has boundaries.

34. Function 32 — Explain criteria | 功能三十二:说明判断标准

  • criterion / criteria
  • standard
  • threshold
  • benchmark
  • requirement
  • indicator
  • metric
  • measure

These words answer different questions. A criterion is a basis for judgement; a threshold is a boundary; a benchmark provides comparison; a metric is a quantitative measure.

专业表达的精度经常来自这些“看起来很普通”的名词。

35. Function 33 — Explain relevance | 功能三十三:说明相关性

  • relevant to
  • directly relevant
  • indirectly relevant
  • material to the decision
  • within scope
  • outside scope
  • applicable to
  • pertinent to

Professional writing improves when relevance is explicit rather than implied.

36. Function 34 — Explain scope | 功能三十四:控制范围

  • within the scope of
  • outside the scope of
  • limited to
  • applies primarily to
  • extends beyond
  • covers
  • does not address
  • for the purposes of this analysis

Scope vocabulary is one of the best defences against overclaiming.

37. Function 35 — Explain implications | 功能三十五:说明意义与后果

  • implies
  • suggests
  • has implications for
  • raises questions about
  • points to the need for
  • may affect
  • could alter
  • is likely to influence

Do not use implication as a vague prestige noun. State what the implication actually is.

38. Function 36 — Explain significance | 功能三十六:说明为什么值得关注

  • is significant because…
  • matters because…
  • is important for…
  • has practical significance for…
  • has theoretical implications for…
  • is material to the decision because…

The word significant should not carry the whole explanation. Explain the consequence.

39. Function 37 — Signpost structure | 功能三十七:给读者路标

  • first
  • the next section examines…
  • turning to…
  • by contrast…
  • the discussion now considers…
  • taken together…
  • the final point concerns…

Spoken academic English often uses more explicit signposting because listeners cannot reread the sentence they just heard.

这就是为什么 OPAL 把 academic spoken phrases 单独列出来。口语学术表达需要帮助听者跟上路线。

40. Function 38 — Focus attention | 功能三十八:告诉听者“这里最重要”

  • the key point is…
  • what matters here is…
  • the important distinction is…
  • the main issue is…
  • the central question is…
  • what we need to notice is…

These are high-value spoken and written frames because they reduce listener processing load.

41. Function 39 — Reformulate | 功能三十九:换一种说法

  • in other words…
  • put differently…
  • more simply…
  • more specifically…
  • to put the point another way…
  • what this means in practice is…

Reformulation is essential in teaching, presentations and professional explanation. It lets one idea move across levels of complexity.

42. Function 40 — Summarise | 功能四十:总结

  • in summary…
  • overall…
  • taken together…
  • the main conclusion is…
  • the evidence therefore supports…
  • the analysis points to three conclusions…

A good summary does not merely repeat earlier wording. It compresses the argument while preserving its structure.

43. Academic words are often less useful than academic phrase frames | 学术“单词”经常不如学术“词块”实用

Compare learning extent alone with learning:

  • to a large extent
  • to some extent
  • the extent to which
  • to a limited extent

Compare learning respect alone with:

  • with respect to
  • in this respect
  • in several respects

The phrase frames are closer to actual writing and speaking.

Oxford’s OPAL phrase lists are especially useful here because they group important academic phrases by function rather than presenting only single words.

44. Learn academic vocabulary as “slot-and-frame” systems | 把学术表达学成“固定框架 + 可变位置”

Frame:

The evidence is consistent with X.

Variables:

  • the proposed explanation
  • earlier findings
  • a gradual change
  • the hypothesis

Frame:

One limitation of X is Y.

Variables can change by field. The frame gives stability; the content gives meaning.

45. But do not turn phrase frames into templates | 词块不是“万能模板”

The University of Manchester Academic Phrasebank explicitly notes that its phrases require creativity and adaptation where appropriate. That is the right principle.

不要把 Academic Phrasebank 当成“复制句子库”。真正的学习是理解功能,再根据你的内容、学科和证据调整。

A phrase is a route, not a substitute for thought.

46. Learn one function across spoken and written English | 同一个功能,要比较口语和写作版本

Function: qualification.

Spoken academicWritten academic
It seems to be…The evidence suggests that…
In most cases…In the majority of cases…
It depends quite a lot on…The outcome depends substantially on…
There are a couple of limitations. Two important limitations should be noted.

Neither column is “better”. They fit different mediums.

47. Learn one function across academic and professional English | 同一个功能,再比较学术和职场版本

Function: limitation.

  • Academic: “A key limitation of the study is the small sample size.”
  • Professional: “The main constraint is current staffing capacity.”
  • Technical: “The bottleneck is the database write path.”

The intellectual job is similar; domain vocabulary changes.

48. Build a general core, then add your domain | 先建通用核心,再叠加专业领域

Use three layers:

  1. General academic/professional functions — define, compare, qualify, evaluate.
  2. Cross-domain reasoning vocabulary — evidence, constraint, mechanism, assumption, implication, criterion.
  3. Domain-specific vocabulary — medicine, finance, engineering, education, law, design, etc.

This prevents specialised vocabulary from floating without a reasoning system underneath it.

49. Domain example — Education | 专业示例:教育

  • learning objective
  • prior knowledge
  • misconception
  • retrieval practice
  • cognitive load
  • feedback
  • transfer
  • scaffolding
  • fluency
  • learning outcome

Function routes:

  • identify a misconception
  • reduce unnecessary cognitive load
  • provide feedback
  • support transfer
  • evaluate learning outcomes

The domain nouns become useful when connected to verbs and reasoning functions.

50. Domain example — Finance | 专业示例:金融

  • liquidity
  • credit risk
  • exposure
  • volatility
  • leverage
  • valuation
  • cash flow
  • capital allocation
  • downside risk
  • return

Function routes:

  • assess credit risk
  • reduce exposure
  • manage liquidity
  • allocate capital
  • evaluate downside risk

Professional vocabulary becomes operational when verbs and decisions surround the nouns.

51. Domain example — Engineering | 专业示例:工程

  • tolerance
  • failure mode
  • load
  • reliability
  • redundancy
  • capacity
  • bottleneck
  • degradation
  • constraint
  • specification

Function routes:

  • identify a failure mode
  • verify the specification
  • assess reliability
  • increase redundancy
  • operate within tolerance

52. Domain example — Research | 专业示例:研究

  • hypothesis
  • variable
  • sample
  • measure
  • bias
  • confounder
  • validity
  • reliability
  • effect
  • uncertainty

Function routes:

  • test a hypothesis
  • control for a variable
  • reduce bias
  • estimate the effect
  • assess validity
  • quantify uncertainty

Again, vocabulary grows around work, not around an alphabet.

53. Chinese translation trap: “进行” | 中文翻译陷阱:“进行”

Chinese academic/professional prose often uses 进行 across many actions. English usually prefers a more specific verb.

  • 进行研究 → conduct / carry out research
  • 进行分析 → conduct / perform an analysis; analyse
  • 进行讨论 → discuss / hold a discussion
  • 进行评估 → assess / evaluate / conduct an assessment
  • 进行修改 → revise / modify
  • 进行调查 → investigate / conduct an investigation

Do not translate 进行 first. Identify the action.

54. Chinese translation trap: “方面” | 中文翻译陷阱:“方面”

“在……方面” can become:

  • in terms of
  • with respect to
  • regarding
  • in relation to
  • in this respect
  • when it comes to — more conversational

But sometimes English simply restructures the sentence and removes “方面” entirely.

Example: “在效率方面,这个系统更好。” → “The system is more efficient.”

自然学术英语不需要把每个中文抽象名词都保留下来。

55. Chinese translation trap: “说明” | 中文翻译陷阱:“说明”

  • show
  • suggest
  • indicate
  • demonstrate
  • illustrate
  • imply
  • establish

Selection depends on evidence strength and discourse job.

不要把所有 “说明” 自动变成 show,更不要为了正式全部变成 demonstrate.

56. Chinese translation trap: “根据” | 中文翻译陷阱:“根据”

  • according to X — attribution to a source
  • based on X — foundation for analysis/decision
  • on the basis of X — formal basis
  • in light of X — considering new evidence/context
  • given X — taking a condition as known

These phrases are not interchangeable. “According to the data” is sometimes acceptable, but “based on the data” may better express the logic of a conclusion.

57. Chinese translation trap: “证明” | 中文翻译陷阱:“证明”

In many non-mathematical contexts, prove is stronger than the evidence warrants.

  • suggest
  • indicate
  • support
  • demonstrate
  • establish
  • provide evidence for

Choose according to evidential strength and disciplinary standards.

58. Chinese translation trap: “有效” | 中文翻译陷阱:“有效”

  • effective — achieves intended result
  • efficient — achieves result with little waste
  • valid — logically/methodologically acceptable depending on field
  • reliable — consistently produces stable results
  • useful — practically helpful
  • successful — achieves a desired outcome

“有效” is a category, not a final English answer.

59. Chinese translation trap: “合理” | 中文翻译陷阱:“合理”

  • reasonable — sensible/fair
  • rational — based on reason
  • plausible — believable
  • justified — supported by sufficient reason/evidence
  • appropriate — suitable
  • proportionate — appropriately balanced to scale/need

Each word answers a different evaluative question.

60. Chinese translation trap: “提升” | 中文翻译陷阱:“提升”

  • improve performance
  • increase capacity
  • raise standards
  • enhance clarity
  • strengthen governance
  • develop capability
  • upgrade infrastructure
  • boost confidence

Academic and professional vocabulary becomes precise when “提升” is reclassified by mechanism.

61. Avoid noun inflation | 避免“名词膨胀”

Academic vocabulary contains many abstract nouns, but piling them together does not create strong academic writing.

Inflated: The implementation of the evaluation facilitated the identification of improvement opportunities.

Clearer: The evaluation helped identify opportunities to improve the programme.

Use nominalisation when the concept itself needs to become the topic. Otherwise, verbs may keep the process clearer.

高级写作不是抽象名词越多越好。

62. Avoid connector inflation | 避免“连接词膨胀”

Do not force moreover, furthermore, nevertheless, consequently, notwithstanding into every paragraph simply because they look academic.

Use the connector that accurately expresses the relationship. Sometimes but, because or so is perfectly appropriate, especially in speech.

逻辑关系正确,比连接词难度更重要。

63. Avoid prestige verbs | 避免“为了高级而高级”的动词

Words such as facilitate, utilise, ascertain, constitute, elucidate have legitimate uses. They should not automatically replace help, use, find out, be, explain.

The advanced question remains: does the formal word add a useful distinction?

If not, the simple word may be more professional.

64. Academic vocabulary needs collocation | 学术词汇必须带搭配一起学

  • pose a question
  • raise an issue
  • draw a distinction
  • challenge an assumption
  • provide evidence
  • reach a conclusion
  • adopt an approach
  • address a limitation
  • conduct an analysis
  • assess feasibility

These combinations are closer to actual academic/professional production than isolated nouns.

Detailed collocation mechanics remain with How Collocation Turns Vocabulary Knowledge Into Natural, Precise English.

65. Academic vocabulary needs word families | 学术词汇也必须带词族

Target concept: analyse.

  • analyse
  • analysis
  • analytical
  • analytically
  • analyst

Target concept: evaluate.

  • evaluate
  • evaluation
  • evaluative
  • evaluator

The value of the family is sentence flexibility, not table completion.

Word-family mechanics remain with Lesson No.002 and the site’s word-formation owner.

66. Build function cards, not word cards | 做“功能卡”,不要只做“单词卡”

Front:

FUNCTION: Limit a claim

Back:

  • may
  • appears to
  • to some extent
  • under certain conditions
  • does not necessarily imply

Front:

FUNCTION: State a limitation

Back:

  • one limitation is…
  • the analysis is limited by…
  • an important caveat is…
  • cannot establish whether…

Now retrieval begins from communicative purpose.

67. Build scenario cards | 再做“场景卡”

Scenario: “The data point toward an explanation, but do not prove it.”

Possible output:

  • the evidence suggests…
  • a plausible explanation is…
  • the findings are consistent with…

Scenario cards resemble real reasoning more closely than Chinese-to-English translation cards.

68. Build contrast cards | 再做“对比卡”

Front:

suggest vs demonstrate vs establish

Back: explain differences in evidence strength and give one example of each.

This links Lesson No.006 lexical precision to academic function.

69. Use paragraph reconstruction | 用“段落重建”激活功能词汇

Read a short academic paragraph. Mark its functions:

  • claim
  • evidence
  • qualification
  • limitation
  • conclusion

Then close the paragraph and rebuild the argument using your own wording while preserving the functions.

这是比“抄学术句型”更高级的训练:你在重建逻辑,不是在复制表面。

70. Use one idea in three genres | 同一个意思,写成三种文本

Idea: the system has a capacity problem.

  • Conversation: “The system cannot handle much more traffic.”
  • Professional report: “Current capacity is the main constraint on further growth.”
  • Academic/technical: “The observed performance ceiling appears to reflect a capacity constraint in the processing layer.”

The concept remains; lexical density and stance change.

71. Use one function across three domains | 同一个功能,跨三个领域练

Function: causality.

  • Education: prior knowledge contributes to comprehension.
  • Engineering: heat contributes to component degradation.
  • Finance: leverage can amplify losses.

Function-first vocabulary transfers across domains more easily.

72. Use one domain across five functions | 同一个专业,再跨五种功能练

Domain: education.

  • Define: “Retrieval practice refers to…”
  • Cause: “Repeated retrieval can strengthen…”
  • Evidence: “The findings suggest…”
  • Limit: “One limitation is…”
  • Recommend: “A practical approach would be…”

This creates flexible academic language instead of topic-bound vocabulary.

73. Learn spoken academic frames separately | 学术口语要单独训练

  • what I want to focus on is…
  • the main point here is…
  • if we look at…
  • what tends to happen is…
  • there are two things to notice…
  • let me put that differently…
  • the reason this matters is…

These frames may feel simpler than written academic language. That is appropriate. Spoken academic English needs real-time processing and listener guidance.

74. Learn professional meeting frames | 职场会议也有自己的高价值词块

  • the main constraint is…
  • we need to clarify…
  • the trade-off is…
  • one option would be…
  • the risk with that approach is…
  • we should distinguish between…
  • the next step is…
  • who owns this action?

Professional vocabulary is often less formal than learners expect, but highly functional.

75. Build an academic/professional function notebook | 建立“功能词汇本”

FieldExample
FunctionQualify a claim
Core phrasesmay; appears to; to some extent; under certain conditions
Strong/weak distinctionmay vs is likely to
Registeracademic/professional
My exampleThe effect may depend on prior knowledge.
Chinese bridge限定主张;降低绝对性
Common errorusing definitely without enough evidence
Transfereducation, finance, science

One page per function is often more useful than one page per word.

76. Build a phrase bank that you understand | 建词块库,但每个词块都要懂

Do not copy 500 academic phrases into a document and call it learning. Keep a smaller bank in which every phrase has:

  • a function
  • a meaning
  • a register
  • a grammar pattern
  • one authentic example
  • one personal example
  • a retrieval cue

A small usable bank beats a large copied archive.

77. Use retrieval by function | 提取时从“功能”开始

  • FUNCTION: qualify → produce 5 routes
  • FUNCTION: compare → produce 5 routes
  • FUNCTION: state limitation → produce 4 routes
  • FUNCTION: report evidence → produce 5 routes
  • FUNCTION: recommend → produce 5 routes

This is closer to real writing than “word → Chinese meaning”.

78. Use retrieval by scenario | 再从“场景”提取

Scenario: “You have evidence, but it is not enough to make a strong causal claim.”

  • the evidence suggests…
  • may contribute to…
  • is associated with…
  • cannot establish causation

Scenario retrieval builds decision-ready vocabulary.

79. Use retrieval by transformation | 再做“转换提取”

Simple sentence:

The method is good but has problems.

Professional:

The method is practical, although several limitations should be addressed.

Academic:

The approach is methodologically useful, but its conclusions are constrained by several important limitations.

Transformation trains register and function simultaneously.

80. Use synthesis tasks | 用综合任务把功能词汇接起来

Give yourself a short dataset or article. Write 250 words that must include:

  • one definition
  • one comparison
  • one causal explanation
  • one qualified claim
  • one limitation
  • one recommendation

Now vocabulary serves a chain of reasoning.

81. Use oral synthesis | 口语也做综合

Speak for three minutes on one topic. Require yourself to:

  • define one term
  • distinguish two ideas
  • state one limitation
  • give one example
  • qualify one claim
  • summarise at the end

Do not script every sentence. Use the functional frames as support, then gradually remove notes.

82. A 20-minute function session | 20 分钟功能词汇训练

TimeTask
0–5 minChoose one function, e.g. qualification.
5–10 minCollect 5–8 phrases and compare strength/register.
10–15 minClose notes and retrieve from scenarios.
15–20 minUse the function in one spoken and one written task.

One function per session is enough.

83. A 45-minute academic/professional vocabulary session | 45 分钟完整训练

TimeTask
0–10 minRead or listen to a strong academic/professional source.
10–17 minMark functions, not just difficult words.
17–25 minCollect 5 high-value phrase frames.
25–32 minCompare strength, register and collocation.
32–38 minClosed-book retrieval by function.
38–45 minProduce a short report, explanation or oral summary.

This turns reading into a source of reusable reasoning language.

84. A seven-day function challenge | 七天功能词汇挑战

DayFunction
1Define + classify
2Compare + contrast
3Cause + evidence
4Qualify + uncertainty
5Evaluate + limitation
6Recommend + decide
7Mixed oral/written synthesis without notes

At the end, identify which functions still collapse into vague words.

85. A 30-day academic/professional vocabulary challenge | 30 天学术与专业词汇挑战

  • Build 20 function pages.
  • Collect no more than 200 high-value phrases.
  • Write 20 decision rules for near-synonym sets.
  • Complete 10 paragraph reconstructions.
  • Complete 10 three-minute oral explanations.
  • Write 6 short professional reports or academic mini-essays.
  • Transfer 10 functions across at least three domains.
  • Complete 4 delayed no-notes retrieval tests.
  • Remove phrases you do not understand or cannot use.

The target is not a giant phrase bank. The target is a functional language system.

86. A 12-week C1–C2 progression | 12 周 C1–C2 学术专业词汇路线

WeeksFocusEvidence of progress
1–2definition, classification, comparisonclearer conceptual language
3–4cause, evidence, reporting verbsbetter claim–evidence control
5–6qualification, uncertainty, limitationless overclaiming
7–8evaluation, method, resultsmore diagnostic vocabulary
9–10professional decision, risk, responsibilitystronger workplace language
11–12spoken/written transfer across domainsfunctions remain available under new conditions

87. The first weak link diagnostic | 第一个弱点诊断

SymptomLikely first weak linkRepair

Do not respond to every academic-language weakness by memorising another list.

88. How a strong tutor teaches academic/professional vocabulary | 高水平导师怎样教学术与专业词汇?

A strong tutor begins with a thinking task, not a word list.

  • identify the communicative function
  • model several phrase routes
  • compare strength and register
  • show authentic examples
  • require learner choice
  • remove templates gradually
  • change domain and audience
  • require spoken and written transfer
  • return after delay
  • track repeated functional gaps

This aligns with eduKateSG’s Tutor Classification Model: explanation is only the beginning. Advanced learners need diagnosis, discrimination, controlled release and transfer.

89. The learner should become their own functional language designer | 最终,学习者要能自己设计语言系统

You should increasingly be able to say:

  • I need to qualify this claim.
  • I need a weaker evidence verb.
  • I need to distinguish two mechanisms.
  • I need a more precise limitation term.
  • I need a spoken version of this written phrase.
  • I need a domain-specific noun here.
  • I need to remove an unnecessary nominalisation.

That is a much stronger learning state than “I need more advanced vocabulary”.

90. Canonical ownership and collision boundary | 本课的所有权边界

This lesson owns the Chinese-supported C1–C2 learner route for organising academic and professional vocabulary by communicative function. It does not replace existing mechanism owners.

This page coordinates those mechanisms around one learner problem: “I know many advanced words, but I need a system for using them to define, compare, evaluate, qualify, explain and decide.”

91. Recommended apex resources | 推荐优质资源

92. SEO language map | 本课关键词范围

This lesson naturally serves academic English vocabulary, professional English vocabulary, C1 academic vocabulary, C2 academic vocabulary, academic vocabulary for Chinese speakers, English for academic purposes vocabulary, EAP vocabulary, academic phrases, academic phrasebank, Oxford OPAL, academic collocations, academic writing vocabulary, academic speaking vocabulary, professional writing vocabulary, business English vocabulary, vocabulary for evidence, causality vocabulary, qualification language, hedging language, reporting verbs, comparison vocabulary, limitation vocabulary, evaluation vocabulary, decision vocabulary, risk vocabulary, 高级英语词汇, 学术英语词汇, 专业英语词汇, 学术写作词汇, 学术口语词汇, 学术词块, 英语报告动词, 英语限定表达, 英语因果表达, C1 英语词汇, C2 英语词汇 and 中文母语英语学习.

Search language should route learners into useful instruction, not inflate the text mechanically.

93. Your assignment | 本课作业

Build ten function pages:

  • Define
  • Compare
  • Cause
  • Evidence
  • Qualify
  • Evaluate
  • Limit
  • Recommend
  • Decide
  • Conclude

For each function:

  1. Collect five high-value words or phrases.
  2. Write a simple English explanation of each.
  3. Mark spoken/written register.
  4. Add one collocation or grammar frame.
  5. Add one Chinese bridge.
  6. Create one scenario.
  7. Close the notes and retrieve.
  8. Use the function in one spoken example.
  9. Use it in one written example.
  10. Transfer it to a different domain within one week.

Do not add more phrases until the first fifty can actually perform their jobs.

学术词汇真正成熟的标志,不是你背了多少词,而是你能完成多少种思考任务。

94. The final rule | 最后一条规则

Do not collect academic vocabulary as decoration. Build it as infrastructure for reasoning.

不要把学术词汇当装饰品收集。把它建成思考的基础设施。

When you need to define, the right language should become available. When evidence is weak, qualification should appear. When two mechanisms differ, comparison vocabulary should help you separate them. When a recommendation is impractical, feasibility vocabulary should explain why. When a claim has boundaries, limitation language should protect the truth.

That is what advanced vocabulary is for.

不是让句子更长,而是让思考更可操作。
