One known word can help you recognise several related words.
一个熟悉的词,可以帮助你认识一整小组相关词。

Quick read | 先看最重要的
Do not learn every English word as a completely separate object.
不要把每个英语单词都当成毫无关系的新东西。
Look at:
- teach
- teacher
- teaching
The core teach stays visible. The endings add a new job.
再看:
- work
- worker
- working
This is a beginner word-family idea: one core word grows into related forms.
This page is deliberately simpler than the Advanced Vocabulary owner | 这页刻意保持初级
eduKate already has an Advanced English Vocabulary Chinese Edition article on turning known words into word families and phrase networks. That page owns deeper lexical morphology and advanced family expansion.
This lesson has a smaller job: show a beginner how a few transparent prefixes and suffixes can make vocabulary easier to recognise and organise.
本课不追求复杂词源学,不要求背大量拉丁/希腊词根,也不把构词法变成考试理论。只学最清楚、最常用、最容易验证的词族。
What is a word family? | 什么是词族?
A word family is a group of words connected by a common base and related meaning.
词族就是:共享一个核心词,并且意义上仍然有明显关系的一组词。
Example:
- help — 帮助
- helper — 帮助者
- helpful — 有帮助的
- helping — 正在帮助 / 帮助这一动作的形式
Word family is not the same as rhyme family | 词族不等于押韵词组
Early reading materials sometimes call groups such as cat / hat / mat “word families” because they share a spelling/sound pattern.
That is useful for phonics and spelling.
This lesson focuses mainly on meaning-related morphological families such as:
- teach → teacher → teaching
- work → worker → working
Two different learning ideas can use the same label. Keep the distinction clear.
Research floor | 研究底线
Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries word lists and learner dictionaries frequently show parts of speech, derivatives and related forms, while Cambridge Dictionary provides word-family and derivative information across entries. For beginners, the useful principle is simple: notice recurring bases and transparent endings, then confirm real meanings in a learner dictionary.
TEACH family | teach 词族
| Word | 中文 | Example |
|---|---|---|
| teach | 教 | I teach English. |
| teacher | 老师 | my teacher |
| teaching | 教学 / 正在教 | teaching English |
Notice the relationship:
- teach = action
- teacher = person who teaches
WORK family | work 词族
| work | 工作 | go to work |
| worker | 工人 / 工作人员 | a worker |
| working | 工作的 / 正在工作 | working today |
PLAY family | play 词族
| play | 玩 / 比赛 | play a game |
| player | 玩家 / 运动员 | a football player |
| playing | 正在玩 / 玩耍 | playing a game |
READ family | read 词族
| read | 读 | read a book |
| reader | 读者 / 阅读者 | a young reader |
| reading | 阅读 | reading a book |
WRITE family | write 词族
| write | 写 | write your name |
| writer | 作者 / 写作者 | a writer |
| writing | 写作 / 正在写 | English writing |
Spelling changes slightly: write → writer / writing. Do not assume every suffix attaches without spelling changes.
HELP family | help 词族
| help | 帮助 | help me |
| helper | 帮手 / 帮助者 | a helper |
| helpful | 有帮助的 | helpful advice |
| helping | 帮助中 / 帮助这一动作 | helping a friend |
CARE family | care 词族
| care | 关心 / 照顾 | take care |
| careful | 小心的 / 仔细的 | be careful |
| carefully | 小心地 / 仔细地 | read carefully |
This family shows that related words may change grammatical job.
USE family | use 词族
| use | 使用 | use a phone |
| user | 使用者 / 用户 | a user |
| useful | 有用的 | a useful word |
HOPE family | hope 词族
| hope | 希望 | I hope so. |
| hopeful | 有希望的 / 满怀希望的 | feel hopeful |
MOVE family | move 词族
| move | 移动 | move the chair |
| movement | 动作 / 移动 | body movement |
| moving | 移动中的 | a moving car |
-ment is useful, but do not try to create new -ment words freely without checking a dictionary.
ACT family | act 词族
| act | 行动 / 表演 |
| action | 行动 / 动作 |
| actor | 演员 |
This family is useful but slightly less transparent than teach/teacher. Learn it after easier families.
Beginner suffix: -er | -er:做这件事的人
A common beginner pattern:
- teach → teacher
- work → worker
- play → player
- read → reader
- write → writer
-er often makes a person or thing connected to the action, but not every English word follows one simple rule.
Use the pattern as a clue, not a licence to invent words.
Beginner suffix: -ing | -ing:动作形式
- read → reading
- work → working
- play → playing
- help → helping
-ing appears in several grammatical jobs. For this vocabulary lesson, simply notice the visual family. Full grammar belongs elsewhere.
Beginner suffix: -ful | -ful:有……性质 / 充满……
- help → helpful
- care → careful
- use → useful
- hope → hopeful
Do not assume every noun/verb can take -ful. Learn real words, then notice the pattern.
Beginner suffix: -less | -less:没有……
Useful later examples:
- careless — 粗心的
- hopeless — 没有希望的
- useless — 无用的
These words may carry stronger or more negative meanings. A true beginner does not need many -less words at once.
Beginner suffix: -ly | -ly:常把形容词变成副词
- careful → carefully
- slow → slowly
- quick → quickly
But not every -ly word works the same way. Again, pattern first, dictionary confirmation second.
Beginner prefix: re- | re-:再一次
- read → reread
- write → rewrite
- start → restart
re- often carries the idea “again”.
But spelling and actual usage still need checking. Do not invent every possible re- word.
Beginner prefix: un- | un-:否定 / 相反
- happy → unhappy
- clear → unclear
- helpful → unhelpful
un- often creates a negative/opposite meaning, but not every adjective takes un- naturally.
Prefix is not always a perfect opposite machine | 前缀不是万能反义词机器
For example, English does not create every opposite by adding un-.
Learn real high-frequency words, not imagined ones.
Base word first | 先稳住核心词
Do not learn:
teach, teacher, teaching, teachable, reteach, teacherly… all at once.
A beginner may need only:
- teach
- teacher
- teaching
Depth grows after the core is stable.
Meaning must remain connected | 词形变化后,意义连接要保持
Ask:
- What meaning stays the same?
- What job changes?
Example:
- work — activity
- worker — person
- working — activity/state form
Part of speech is useful, but do not overteach labels | 词性有用,但不要一开始讲太重
You can notice:
- teach — verb
- teacher — noun
- helpful — adjective
- carefully — adverb
But the beginner goal is still use:
- teach English
- my teacher
- a helpful teacher
- read carefully
Family + phrase | 词族必须进入短语
Do not stop at:
help → helpful
Add:
- help me
- need help
- a helpful person
- helpful information
The family becomes stronger when every form has a phrase.
TEACH family phrase bank | teach 词族短语
- teach English
- my teacher
- English teaching
WORK family phrase bank | work 词族短语
- go to work
- a worker
- working today
READ family phrase bank | read 词族短语
- read a book
- a young reader
- reading a book
HELP family phrase bank | help 词族短语
- help me
- a helper
- helpful information
USE family phrase bank | use 词族短语
- use a phone
- a user
- a useful word
Do not assume spelling stays unchanged | 拼写不一定完全不变
Examples:
- write → writer / writing
- use → useful
Spelling rules become more systematic later. For now, compare real forms visually.
Sound may also change | 发音也可能变化
Related words can shift stress or sound. Therefore:
- see the family
- check each word in a learner dictionary
- listen to each form
- say it in a phrase
Do not assume the base word tells you every detail of pronunciation.
Word-family notebook | 词族本
| Base | Person | Other form | Phrase |
|---|---|---|---|
| teach | teacher | teaching | my teacher |
| work | worker | working | go to work |
| play | player | playing | play a game |
| read | reader | reading | read a book |
| help | helper | helpful | need help |
One family per day | 一天一个词族
Do not collect twenty families in one sitting.
Example:
Day 1: teach
- teach
- teacher
- teaching
Use three phrases and three sentences.
Family retrieval | 词族提取
Prompt:
teach
Can you produce:
- teacher
- teaching
Prompt:
work
Can you produce:
- worker
- working
Meaning-job retrieval | 意义功能提取
Prompt:
“a person who teaches” → teacher
“a person who works” → worker
“having use/value” → useful
This is stronger than reciting suffixes without meaning.
Chinese → English family retrieval | 中文到英文词族
- 教 → teach
- 老师 → teacher
- 工作 → work
- 工人 / 工作人员 → worker
- 有帮助的 → helpful
- 有用的 → useful
Family sorting | 词族分类
Sort:
teacher · working · helpful · read · worker · teaching · reader · help
Into:
- teach family
- work family
- help family
- read family
Spot the base | 找核心词
- teacher → teach
- worker → work
- helpful → help
- reader → read
- useful → use
This trains morphological awareness without heavy theory.
Do not cut words incorrectly | 不要乱拆词
Not every word ending in the same letters belongs to the same family.
Example: seeing -er at the end does not automatically mean “person who does X”.
Always check meaning and a learner dictionary.
False-family warning | 假词族提醒
Words can look similar but not have a useful beginner relationship.
Do not connect words just because some letters match.
The family should have a real meaning connection.
Word families can reduce memory load | 词族可以减少记忆负担
If you know teach, then teacher is not completely new. Part of the word and meaning is already familiar.
This does not mean “free vocabulary”. You still need pronunciation, meaning, spelling and phrase use for each new form.
Word families help reading | 词族帮助阅读
You know:
help
You meet:
helpful
You can make a useful first guess: “related to help”. Then confirm from context and dictionary.
Word families help spelling | 词族帮助拼写
Stable bases can help you see repeated letter groups:
- help / helpful / helping
- work / worker / working
But spelling changes must still be learned where they occur.
Word families help speaking only if retrieved | 词族要能说出来才真正帮助口语
Knowing that -er can make a person word is not enough if you cannot say:
My teacher is helpful.
Family knowledge must return to phrases and sentences.
Mini reading | 超简单阅读
“My teacher teaches English. She is a helpful teacher. We read every day. I am a young reader. My father works in an office. He is an office worker.”
Find the word families:
- teach / teacher
- help / helpful
- read / reader
- work / worker
Mini writing | 超简单写作
Use four families:
- teach → My ___ is kind.
- work → My father is a ___.
- help → This is very ___.
- read → I am a ___.
Mini speaking | 一分钟词族口语
“I study English. My teacher teaches English. She is helpful. I read books. I am a reader. My father works. He is a worker.”
The language is simple on purpose. The goal is to make family relationships speakable.
Vocabulary card model | 词族卡片

First weak link check | 第一个卡点
| Symptom | Likely weak link | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| I see teacher but do not connect teach. | base recognition | highlight shared base |
| I know -er but invent wrong words. | overgeneralisation | dictionary-confirm real forms |
| I know family forms but not meanings. | semantic link | one phrase per form |
| I can recognise but cannot produce. | active retrieval | base → family recall |
| I forget after days. | spacing | delayed family recall |
For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师
- Start with transparent families.
- Do not teach ten affixes at once.
- Keep meaning central.
- Confirm real words in a learner dictionary.
- Use one phrase for each family member.
- Do not reward invented forms just because the pattern looks plausible.
- Return after a delay.

Final check | 最终自检
Can you:
- build teach → teacher → teaching?
- build work → worker → working?
- recognise -er as a common person-form clue?
- recognise -ful in helpful/useful?
- recognise re- and un- in a few real words?
- avoid inventing forms without checking?
- use each family member in a phrase?
- recall the families after a week?
Final rule | 最后一条规则
Use word families to reduce “completely new” vocabulary, but confirm every real word through meaning and use.
用词族减少“每个词都完全陌生”的感觉,但每一个真实单词仍然要通过意义和用法来确认。
