  • working becomes less organised;
  • the learner continues with a poor route because changing it feels expensive.

These observations are educational evidence. They should not be converted into unsupported medical or psychological labels.

A pressure test becomes informative when we can compare performance under different conditions.

The point is not that the pressured condition is more “real” in every context. It is that the difference between conditions tells us which capabilities are sensitive to environmental demand.

Knowledge Can Be Present While Performance Control Is Fragile

Suppose a student answers a Mathematics question correctly in class and incorrectly in a timed paper.

It is tempting to say the learner “did not know it in the exam.”

Sometimes that is true.

But the difference may instead come from:

  • slower retrieval;
  • misclassification inside mixed work;
  • rushing the first step;
  • losing track of time;
  • failing to verify an implausible result;
  • or difficulty recovering after an earlier question consumed attention.

Under time pressure, students may grab the first familiar cue.

A keyword replaces representation. A familiar English question form replaces careful reading. A Science concept is selected before the experiment is inspected.

Pressure Can Switch Off Checking

A learner may possess good checking habits in class and abandon them in a paper because checking feels like lost time.
