A useful explanation does more than fit what happened. It should also tell us what else we would reasonably expect to see.

If that expected signal repeatedly fails to appear under conditions where it should have been visible, the explanation should lose confidence.

A Missing Signal Matters Only if It Had a Fair Chance to Appear

Absence is not automatically evidence.

If we claim a learner has stable retrieval, but we never wait long enough for freshness to fade, the lack of forgetting tells us little. If we claim a learner can self-correct, but the task contains no detectable error opportunity, silence is not meaningful.

Diagnosis: Explanations Should Risk Being Wrong

A weak explanation can survive anything: success proves it, failure also proves it, silence proves it, and every contradiction is reinterpreted away.

Curie should not work like that. A useful educational interpretation should create expectations that reality can challenge.

English

If we believe a learner truly understands inference, we should eventually expect accurate interpretation in an unfamiliar passage without the original classroom wording. If that never appears despite suitable opportunities, the broad claim should weaken.

Mathematics

If we believe method selection is secure, we should expect correct route choice when the topic label disappears. If execution remains accurate only after the method is supplied, the missing independent start is evidence against the broader claim.

If a learner genuinely understands a mechanism, we should expect reasonable predictions when one variable changes. Correct vocabulary without the predicted causal reasoning weakens the claim that the mechanism is understood.

If an A-Math learner has truly internalised a relationship, we should expect the method to reappear when notation or surface form changes. Repeated absence of that recognition under fair conditions suggests the knowledge remains cue-bound.

Repair: Turn the Missing Signal Into a Better Question

  1. State the current explanation.
  2. Ask what observable result it predicts.
  3. Check whether the observation conditions were fair.
  4. If the signal is absent, reduce confidence rather than forcing the explanation.
  5. Use The Discriminating Test if several alternatives remain.
  6. Repair only the boundary justified by the evidence.

Tutorial and Tutor

A Tutorial can deliberately create a fair opportunity for an expected capability to appear. The Tutor dashboard should then distinguish “not observed” from “tested and absent.” Those are not the same state.

What Parents Can Ask

  • If this explanation is correct, what else should we expect to see?
  • Did my child have a fair chance to show it?
  • Was the expected signal simply not tested?
  • Has the same absence repeated?
  • What alternative explanation now becomes more plausible?

Voyage and Darwin

Across the Voyage, learners are expected to display increasingly independent evidence of capability. The Darwin Series asks whether old methods remain sufficient. Missing expected signals can be the first indication that a developmental handover or adaptation has not yet occurred.

Boundaries

  • Absence of evidence is not automatically evidence of absence.
  • Do not treat a signal as missing unless the conditions could reasonably reveal it.
  • Do not turn one missing signal into a global learner label.
  • Do not ignore contradictory positive evidence.
  • Keep uncertainty proportional to the observation quality.

The Core Rule of Negative Evidence

For every important learning explanation, identify what else should become visible if it is correct, create a fair opportunity for that signal to appear, and reduce confidence when the expected evidence repeatedly fails to arrive.
