Rounding Numbers for Kids in Sengkang: Nearest Ten and Nearest Hundred

Rounding numbers for kids in Sengkang can begin with locating a number between two neighbouring tens. Is 347 closer to 340 or 350? The distance comparison explains the answer before a shortcut is introduced.

This guide focuses on non-negative whole numbers rounded to the nearest ten or hundred. It includes midpoint cases and a common mistake caused by rounding in two stages.

The examples are fictional practice quantities. A rounded count is an approximation, not a replacement for an exact inventory, booking requirement or actual number of items needed.

PART 1 OF 6

1. Identify the rounding place

Back to contents

For 347 to the nearest ten, the neighbouring multiples of ten are 340 and 350. The distances are seven and three, so 347 rounds to 350.

Ask the child to label the interval on a number line. Rounding is not simply deleting a digit: the requested place determines the neighbouring values being compared.

2. Change the place and compare again

Back to contents

For the same number to the nearest hundred, compare 300 and 400. The distances from 347 are forty-seven and fifty-three, so the answer is 300.

The number has not changed, but the requested precision has. Keep “nearest ten” or “nearest hundred” beside each answer so two different valid results do not seem contradictory.

PART 3 OF 6

3. Handle an exact midpoint explicitly

Back to contents

Using the common school convention of rounding a midpoint upwards for non-negative numbers, 345 rounds to 350 to the nearest ten. It is five away from both 340 and 350.

Likewise, 350 rounds to 400 to the nearest hundred under that convention. Say which convention is being used rather than claim every mathematical or software setting handles ties identically.

4. Connect a digit rule with distance

Back to contents

When rounding a whole number to the nearest ten, a ones digit from 0 to 4 leads to the lower neighbouring ten, while 5 to 9 leads to the upper ten under our stated convention.

For the nearest hundred, inspect the tens digit to decide the direction. Explain the number-line reasoning behind the rule, so it remains connected to the place being rounded.

PART 5 OF 6

5. Avoid rounding twice

Back to contents

Round 348 directly to the nearest hundred: it is closer to 300 than 400, so the result is 300. If you first round to the nearest ten, you get 350, which then rounds to 400.

Those results differ. Use the original number for the requested rounding task, rather than assume an intermediate rounded value always leads to the same answer.

6. Keep exact and approximate labels visible

Back to contents

For a fictional Sengkang family activity, 347 paper cards could be described as approximately 350 to the nearest ten. That does not mean the collection actually contains three extra cards.

North Vista Primary School highlights understanding and meaningful mathematical applications. These independent suggestions share that broad emphasis. Our Sengkang estimation guide offers another task for deciding when an approximate answer is useful and when an exact one is needed.
