Pictograms for kids in Sengkang offer a visual way to organise counts, but a picture does not always stand for one item. Reading the key comes before deciding what a row means.
This guide uses fictional book-category data to practise picture graphs, totals and differences. Children can draw their own graph on paper and check each row against the original counts.
A statistical pictogram represents quantities with repeated symbols. It serves a different purpose from a single public sign or icon, even though both communicate through pictures.

Before counting symbols, read what the graph records and which categories its rows represent. Then find the key explaining the quantity represented by one complete symbol.
For our practice graph, use a simple book symbol and write “one complete symbol represents four books”. These are invented data for a family activity, not library statistics.
Use eight adventure books, twelve animal stories and four humour books. With one symbol representing four books, draw two symbols for adventures, three for animal stories and one for humour.
Keep the symbols the same size and align them clearly. Decorative differences should not suggest extra quantity. Write the category names so another reader can understand each row without your explanation.
Three complete symbols in the animal-story row represent 3 × 4 = 12 books. The row contains three drawings, but its recorded quantity is twelve books.
Ask the child to include the unit in the answer. “Three symbols” answers a question about the drawing; “twelve books” answers a question about the collection it represents.
If the graph’s key permits half symbols, half of our four-book symbol represents two books. Two complete symbols and one half symbol would therefore represent ten books.
Do not assume that a smaller decorative picture means a fractional quantity. Partial symbols need a clear convention. For a first graph, whole-symbol counts may be easier to draw and read consistently.
In the original practice graph, the total is 8 + 12 + 4 = 24 books. Animal stories exceed adventures by four books, because 12 minus 8 equals 4.
The same difference appears as one complete symbol, representing four books. Check that the child converts the symbolic difference into the quantity asked for, rather than report “one” without a unit.
Choose a manageable set of items at home, agree on categories and count accurately before drawing. Select a key that represents those counts clearly, then ask a family member to read the result.
North Vista Primary School emphasises understanding and reasoning in mathematics. These independent suggestions share that broad emphasis. For a different representation of category counts, see our Sengkang bar-graph guide. Neither graph establishes what all Sengkang children prefer.
