2. The arithmetic behind the neighbourhood
Did you know that Anchorvale Horizon’s original launch included 240 studio apartments alongside four- and five-room flats? HDB’s October 2010 release recorded 745 homes at the junction of Anchorvale Road and Sengkang East Way.
Anchorvale Horizon history begins here with a dated housing announcement. Applications opened on 26 October 2010; that date marks the launch exercise, not the day every resident moved in.
This guide explains the original flat mix, the surrounding facilities described then and a simple family activity for reading numbers accurately.

Three short chapters
The release listed 240 studio apartments, 357 four-room flats and 148 five-room flats. It described the project as a premium contract, using the classification of that period.
Planned amenities included a mini-mart, eating house, shops, childcare centre and Residents’ Committee centre. The record also placed the development opposite Anchorvale Community Club and the Sengkang Sports & Recreation Centre.
The HDB release used here survives as a third-party PDF copy. Its historical descriptions should not be treated as current operator information or translated silently into newer housing classifications.
The three categories add to 745: 240 + 357 + 148. Try checking the total in another order: 357 + 148 = 505, then add 240.
Four-room flats were the largest individual category, but they were not more than half the total. Twice 357 is 714, which is less than 745. “Largest group” and “majority” are different claims.
Ask a child to explain that distinction using three piles of counters or a labelled bar chart. It is a useful example of how careful language and arithmetic work together.
The figures count homes in the launch record. They do not reveal the number, ages or circumstances of the people who later lived there.
Imagine tracing a journey from home to a shared destination such as a community space. On your own sketch, mark the start, the destination and the connections between them.
Label the drawing as a learning model, not an official estate plan. The exercise is about understanding how several places relate, rather than reproducing the precinct accurately.
If you explore Anchorvale, use current signs and permitted common areas. Compare a dated observation with a dated statement from the release, keeping the two kinds of evidence separate.
A housing announcement gives us one moment in a place’s development. Everyday routines and later changes add further chapters, each needing its own evidence.
