A child’s NLB membership can make Sengkang library visits easier to organise: you can borrow under the correct account, check its loans and plan the next return date.
NLB says parents with Singpass can register a Singaporean or permanent-resident child online. Other situations may need assistance and supporting documents, so check the official instructions for your child’s circumstances.
Once the account is ready, keep the first borrowing visit modest. A few books the child wants to open are a better beginning than filling the available quota.

Check whether an account already exists
Use the official NLB account service to check membership and follow its registration instructions. Avoid guessing that a previous library visit means the child already has a borrowing account.
NLB lists Basic Membership as free for Singaporeans. Fees and eligibility differ for other membership situations; read the current membership information rather than applying one family’s arrangement to everyone.
Keep the registration details private and complete the process through NLB’s official channel. If the online route does not support your situation, check the required documents before visiting for assistance.
Set up the digital access separately
NLB explains that library members, including children and babies, can have a myLibrary username. Membership and the credentials used to access digital services are related steps, so check that both are ready.
Follow NLB’s instructions for creating or retrieving the username. Store the details securely rather than writing passwords in a notebook that travels between school and the library.
If several family members borrow, make sure you can identify whose account is being used. A book’s return date belongs to its loan record, not to the person currently reading it.
Make the first visit easy to repeat
Let the child choose something appealing, then preview its language and length together. A familiar subject or inviting picture can be a useful starting point.
Choose a small number of books and agree where they will live at home. A dedicated shelf or bag makes them easier to find before the return trip.
For a young child, treat borrowing as a shared routine: choose, borrow, read and return. There is no need to make the first visit a test of reading speed.
Check the loans before leaving
NLB’s membership guidance describes using the eCard and borrowing functions in NLB Mobile. Follow the current borrowing instructions and confirm that the intended books appear in the correct account.
Write the return plan into your calendar and involve the child in gathering the books. Do not rely on memory when family members have different loans.
If a particular title is unavailable, our Sengkang reservation guide explains how to plan another visit. Membership makes access possible; a manageable routine makes reading easier to continue.
