At 66 Sengkang East Way, St Anne’s Church offers a different way to read the neighbourhood: through a community whose story reaches back to 1963. Its history is about people gathering, learning and keeping a parish going—not simply an old date attached to an address.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4 · Origins and people

1. The 1963 starting point

Back to contents

The People’s Association’s Sengkang welcome booklet records that Father Hippolyte Berthold acquired land for a growing Catholic community and that the church building was completed in July 1963, around St Anne’s feast day.

That gives us a useful starting point, but not permission to assume that every structure visible today is unchanged from 1963. When exploring local history, separate the age of a community from the age of individual walls, roofs and additions.

2. Sixty years, seen from 2023

A parish bulletin published in July 2023 marked sixty years of St Anne’s. Its pastoral reflection looked back to the parish’s roots in a Ponggol outpost connected with the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and thanked generations who had sustained the community.

Read that anniversary as a snapshot from 2023, not a claim about the parish’s current anniversary programme. It is also a reminder that a town’s history can travel with people as neighbourhood names and surroundings change.

3. A library inside the community

The parish’s library page records that Emmanuel Library was established in 2006. It describes a resource for spiritual learning, supported by volunteers, and welcomes non-parishioners as well as parish members.

For a student, this opens an interesting question: what counts as neighbourhood infrastructure? A library inside a place of worship can be part of a community’s learning life, even when it is less obvious than a shopping centre or station.

If you are exploring Sengkang, start by reading the parish’s own material and looking at the setting from public space. Before entering, using the library or attending an activity, check current arrangements with the church.

This is an active place of worship, not a guaranteed sightseeing attraction. Avoid interrupting prayer or services, and ask before photographing people or interiors. A worthwhile family conversation afterwards: which parts of a community’s story live in buildings, and which live in its members?
