Sengkang Public Library | Opening Hours, Location and Things to Do with Children

Sengkang Public Library, listed by NLB as Sengkang Library, is inside Compass One at 1 Sengkang Square, units #03-28 and #04-19. It is a lovely option for families who want an indoor outing with room for reading, browsing and discovering something unexpected.

NLB lists regular opening hours as 11am to 9pm, Monday to Sunday. The library closes on public holidays and at 5pm on the eves of Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year. Check the official listing before travelling, especially around holidays.

Did you know that choosing a book can be an activity in itself? You do not need to arrive with a reading worksheet or a long list of learning goals. Give a child a little freedom, a comfortable starting point and enough time to explore. Here is a practical way to make the visit enjoyable.

Plan a visit that begins gently

A first visit does not need to last all afternoon. Our suggested starting point is thirty to forty-five minutes, with permission to stay longer if everyone is engaged. This is a family planning suggestion, not a library session duration.

Eat beforehand if hunger is likely to become a distraction. Bring only what you need, and follow library rules about food, drinks and use of spaces. A reading visit feels calmer when it is not competing with several unfinished errands.

Tell your child the simple plan: look around, choose something to read and decide what to borrow if your membership allows it. Explain that other people may be concentrating, so voices and movement should suit the shared space.

Help children choose without choosing everything for them

Offer a manageable starting point. Instead of “Choose any book in the library,” try “Would you like an animal story, a funny story or a book about how something works?” The child still has a choice, but does not have to navigate an enormous decision all at once.

Let the child examine the cover, illustrations and a few pages. If a book is interesting but too demanding to read independently, you can share it aloud. If it is easy and familiar, that can be comforting too.

At eduKate Sengkang, we encourage parents to notice how a child engages with language. Are they following the sequence, asking about a word or making a connection to something they have seen? You can respond to one observation without turning the visit into an assessment.

What about older children and teenagers?

NLB highlights an Early Literacy Area and a Tween Area for ages 10 to 14. Let a young person’s interests guide the visit rather than assuming that everyone wants the same type of book.

An older child might enjoy finding a book related to a hobby, an unfamiliar country, a historical question or an idea encountered at school. The useful question is “What would you like to know more about?”

For independent reading, choose a small target such as one chapter or twenty minutes. For schoolwork, decide on a specific task before arriving. “Complete the plan for one paragraph” is easier to act on than “Study all afternoon.” Check current arrangements if you need a study seat; do not assume a space will be available.

A simple reading routine you can repeat

Try three steps: browse, read and share. Browse without rushing. Read a short section together or independently. Then share one interesting detail. The discussion can happen later over a meal or on the journey home.

Useful prompts include “Which part surprised you?”, “What do you think happens next?” and “Was there anything you wanted to look up?” Ask one question, then allow an answer. A relaxed conversation often works better than several questions in succession.

At home, keep the chosen book easy to find. A small repeatable reading habit is more manageable than an ambitious plan that disappears after one busy week. Let the next library visit grow from what the child enjoyed this time.

Programmes, borrowing and the next visit

The official branch page links to upcoming programmes. Check the individual event details for age range, date, registration and availability. A programme listing is not a promise of walk-in admission.

Borrowing and reservations depend on NLB membership and current rules. Consult NLB directly rather than assuming that all visitors have the same privileges. Check due dates when taking books home.

Can you combine the visit with a meal at Compass One? Yes, as a suggested outing plan. Keep the library’s schedule separate from the mall’s, and leave enough time for the activity that matters most.

A successful visit can be wonderfully ordinary: one book discovered, one idea discussed and a child willing to return.
