MOE Kindergarten @ North Vista: Bilingual Learning and Weeks of Wonder

MOE Kindergarten @ North Vista gives Sengkang families a clear introduction to its learning approach through its official Flagship Programmes page. It describes purposeful play, meaningful experiences and interactions that support children’s development.

The page explains HI-Light, Starlight Literacy for English and Mother Tongue Languages, and Weeks of Wonder projects. Starlight uses language experiences such as songs, games and Big Books, while Weeks of Wonder builds investigations around children’s interests.

This guide offers an original home activity based on shared picture-book conversation. It helps parents make space for noticing, questions and language in the languages their family uses comfortably.

PART 1 OF 6

Understand the programme picture

Back to contents

North Vista’s kindergarten page describes learning through the Nurturing Early Learners Framework. Its flagship programmes support holistic development and bilingual language learning, with a Weeks of Wonder project each term.

For a parent, the useful connection is between interest and participation. What does your child want to talk about? How do they communicate a question? What helps them join a shared activity? Those observations can make a conversation with an educator more specific.

PART 2 OF 6

Choose a picture book together

Back to contents

Let your child choose a suitable illustrated book. Begin with the cover and ask what catches their attention. They can point, name a character or make a prediction before you start reading.

Keep the conversation close to the child’s response. If they notice a bicycle, talk about the bicycle before moving to another detail. Following an interest makes the book a shared experience rather than a sequence of questions with predetermined answers.

PART 3 OF 6

Make bilingual conversation meaningful

Back to contents

Talk in the languages your household uses naturally. You might name an object in one language and connect it with a familiar word in another. Use the picture or action to support meaning.

Avoid requiring a translation for every sentence. Let the child enjoy the story and communicate what they understand. If a word is new, use it in a short, relevant sentence and give the child another chance to encounter it.

PART 4 OF 6

Follow one question beyond the page

Back to contents

Choose a question your child raises, perhaps how a character could carry something or why a bridge appears in the picture. Decide together how to explore it: another book, a drawing or a model made from blocks.

This is an independent family suggestion, separate from the kindergarten’s own Weeks of Wonder projects. Its purpose is to give a question a manageable next step and help the child notice how they found out something new.

PART 5 OF 6

Let the child retell a small part

Back to contents

Ask for one favourite moment rather than a complete retelling. The child can use the picture, a drawing or a few objects to explain what happened. Listen for a sequence and the detail they consider important.

Offer a prompt only where needed: who was there, what changed, or what happened next? A short successful explanation can give you a useful example to share with an educator when discussing the child’s language experience.

PART 6 OF 6

Check programme and care arrangements

Back to contents

Use North Vista’s official kindergarten admission and programme pages for current information. Clarify session arrangements, KCare availability and enrolment questions directly, especially if your workday requires care beyond the kindergarten session.

Consider travelling through Sengkang, authorised collection and time for rest. At home, shared reading can fit into a small part of the day. The aim is an enjoyable conversation that your child can return to, with room for new questions.
