A learner can look at a PSLE question and say, “I don’t know.” Sometimes that is a genuine knowledge gap. Sometimes the learner knows the relevant content but has not yet identified the task, located the evidence, represented the quantities, separated the variables, or chosen a useful first move. Treating every moment of stuckness as missing knowledge can lead to the wrong repair.
This volume teaches a cross-subject diagnostic habit: do not diagnose a knowledge gap until a reasonable launch move has failed. A launch move is a small action that turns a vague question into a workable structure. It does not solve the whole problem. It reveals whether the blockage is task interpretation, evidence selection, representation, retrieval, execution, confidence or genuine missing knowledge.
The routine extends Vol 0001 on question launch, Vol 0005 on time and attention, Vol 0009 on classifying errors, Vol 0014 on matching checks to failures, and Vol 0022 on stopping checks that no longer produce information.
STUCK → TRY ONE SMALL LAUNCH MOVE → NOTICE WHAT CHANGES → CLASSIFY THE BLOCK → REPAIR THE RIGHT THING.
Stuckness has several possible causes
A learner may be stuck because the concept is unknown, because the command is unclear, because the relevant passage or data has not been located, because the quantities are not organised, because retrieval is slow under pressure, or because the learner is afraid to commit to a first step.
These causes can feel identical from inside the learner. The purpose of a launch move is to create evidence about the cause instead of guessing at it.
A launch move should be small
A launch move should take seconds rather than minutes. It might underline the command word, name the target quantity, label the evidence zone, draw a simple bar, list what changed and what was measured, or paraphrase the question in plain language.
The move is diagnostic because it either creates a route or exposes the next missing link. It is not another name for fully solving the question.
No answer does not automatically mean no knowledge
A student may possess relevant knowledge but fail to retrieve or transfer it in the form used by the examination. Recognising a chapter in notes is different from launching an unfamiliar question that uses the same concept.
If a small representation or task cue unlocks the problem, revision should include transfer and launch practice rather than only more rereading.
Do not deny real knowledge gaps
The launch test is not an excuse to avoid relearning. If the task is understood, the evidence is identified, the representation is sound, and the learner still cannot recall the required concept or procedure, the evidence for a genuine knowledge gap is stronger.
Accurate diagnosis means neither blaming knowledge too early nor pretending knowledge is never the problem.
Task gap versus knowledge gap
A task gap means the learner does not yet know what the question is asking them to do. A knowledge gap means the learner understands the task but lacks the content needed to perform it.
The repairs differ. Task gaps need command-word, format and question-decomposition practice. Knowledge gaps need relearning, retrieval and application.
Representation gap versus procedure gap
In Mathematics and data-rich Science questions, the learner may know the procedure but not know how to represent the situation. A diagram, table, equation or labelled model can reveal the relationship.
If representation immediately unlocks the procedure, the primary weakness was not calculation. It was the bridge between story and structure.
Evidence gap versus expression gap
In English and Science, a learner may know the answer idea but fail to identify supporting evidence. Another learner may have the evidence but struggle to express it clearly.
Ask first whether the learner can point to the supporting line, observation or data. Evidence selection and language expression are separate repair jobs.
Retrieval gap versus understanding gap
Sometimes a learner knows a concept but cannot retrieve it quickly under pressure. A small cue may bring it back and the learner can then apply it independently.
If the concept remains confusing even after retrieval support and examples, the issue is closer to understanding. Practice should reflect that difference.
Execution gap versus method gap
A learner can know the right method and still make arithmetic, copying, grammar, spelling or unit errors. Another learner can execute perfectly on the wrong method.
Check whether the route is valid before drilling execution. More careful arithmetic cannot repair a wrong representation, and cleaner wording cannot repair an unsupported inference.
Confidence gap versus competence gap
A learner may know what to do but hesitate because the context looks unfamiliar. A short launch move can expose that the competence is present even though confidence is low.
The reverse is also possible: a familiar-looking question can create high confidence on a wrong route. Confidence should follow evidence, not replace it.
The thirty-second launch protocol
When a question stalls, stop repeating the same thought. Ask: What is the job? What information is given? What output is required? What is one useful representation or evidence move I can make now?
If that move creates progress, continue. If it does not, name the remaining blockage and decide whether to change method, mark the item for return, or move on.
English launch moves
For comprehension, identify the command and evidence zone. For inference, separate clue from conclusion. For reference, replace the pronoun with possible nouns. For writing, list audience, purpose and required content before polishing.
If these moves reveal the task but vocabulary, grammar or comprehension knowledge remains absent, then the diagnosis can move toward content.
Mathematics launch moves
Name the unknown, label every given quantity, state the relationships, draw a bar or diagram, estimate direction, test a small case or write the unit of the target.
If the structure becomes clear but the learner still does not know how to use ratio, percentage, average, geometry or another concept, the gap is more plausibly conceptual or procedural.
Science launch moves
Identify the command, changed condition, measured or observed response, and evidence pattern. For graphs, name both axes. For investigations, separate observation from explanation.
If the learner can identify the evidence and task but cannot supply the relevant scientific relationship, the diagnosis points more strongly to knowledge.
A launch move should produce information
The value of a launch move is not emotional reassurance. It should change the state of the problem: reveal a target, narrow an evidence zone, expose a relationship, identify a missing concept or show that the route is still blocked.
If a move changes nothing, do not repeat it indefinitely. Choose one different move or protect the rest of the paper and return later.
A seven-state diagnostic map
- No task: I do not know what the question wants.
- No evidence: I know the job but cannot find the information that supports it.
- No representation: I have information but cannot organise the relationships.
- No retrieval: I recognise the concept but cannot bring the needed fact or method to mind.
- No knowledge: I understand the task and structure but genuinely do not know the content.
- No execution control: I know the route but make carrying-out errors.
- No commitment: I have a defensible route but keep delaying because I am afraid to choose.
These are temporary states, not labels for a child. The same learner can show a different state on the next question. The purpose is to choose the next move accurately.
Twenty-six worked launch diagnostics
English factual comprehension
The learner says “I don’t know” although the requested fact appears in one paragraph.
The diagnostic target is task and evidence search. Underline the question noun and verb, then scan only for that event or object.
If the fact can then be found and restated, the blockage was search and task control rather than missing English knowledge. The purpose is not to prove the learner knows everything. It is to gather better evidence about where the blockage sits before choosing the repair.
After the attempt, name what changed. Did the task become clearer? Did the evidence appear? Did the representation reveal a relationship? Did the concept return after a cue? Or did the learner reach a precise point where content was genuinely absent?
For delayed transfer, use a different surface context several days later. The learner should choose the same kind of launch move without being told. That is the sign that the diagnostic routine itself is becoming independent.
English inference
The learner knows the events but cannot answer what they suggest.
The diagnostic target is evidence-to-inference bridge. Write one observed clue first, then state one conclusion that the clue can support.
If the clue is available but no defensible inference can be formed, inference skill needs work. If no clue can be selected, evidence selection is earlier in the chain.
English pronoun reference
The learner cannot interpret a sentence containing ‘they’.
The diagnostic target is reference resolution. Replace the pronoun with each plausible noun phrase and test grammar and meaning.
If one substitution makes the sentence coherent, the learner did not lack vocabulary; the block was reference.
English contrast
The learner misses why a character’s behaviour is surprising.
The diagnostic target is relationship recognition. Mark the contrast word and state the expectation before it and the outcome after it.
If the surprise becomes visible, the gap was discourse relationship rather than character knowledge.
English situational writing
The learner stares at the prompt and cannot begin.
The diagnostic target is task decomposition. List audience, purpose and required content before writing sentences.
If ideas appear after the requirements are visible, planning was the launch problem.
English composition
The learner says there are no ideas for the topic.
The diagnostic target is event generation. Write one change, one decision and one consequence connected to the topic.
If a plot begins to form, the problem was planning; expression can then be diagnosed separately.
English vocabulary in context
The learner does not know one word and assumes the whole sentence is inaccessible.
The diagnostic target is context launch. Read the surrounding clause, identify tone, contrast and grammatical role, then propose a bounded meaning.
If a workable meaning emerges, the learner used context rather than needing an immediate dictionary-like recall.
Mathematics word problem
The learner says the question is from an unfamiliar topic.
The diagnostic target is quantity labelling. Label every number with what it measures and name the target quantity.
If familiar relationships appear after labelling, the context was unfamiliar but the mathematics was not.
Mathematics ratio
The learner cannot use a ratio and a known difference.
The diagnostic target is part representation. Draw equal parts and mark the difference in number of parts.
If one-part value becomes obvious, representation was the main block.
Mathematics percentage
The learner freezes when final price is given instead of original price.
The diagnostic target is base identification. Write which amount represents 100% and what percentage the known amount represents.
If the route appears, the learner knew percentage but needed a base cue.
Mathematics average
The learner tries random operations with two averages.
The diagnostic target is total reconstruction. Convert each average into a total using average multiplied by item count.
If the question unlocks, the problem was representation of average rather than arithmetic.
Mathematics geometry
A composite figure looks too complicated to start.
The diagnostic target is visual decomposition. Split the figure into known shapes or identify a larger shape minus missing regions.
If a route appears, the learner needed a visual launch move.
Mathematics rate
The learner cannot remember multiply or divide.
The diagnostic target is unit reasoning. Write the target unit and the units of the given quantities.
If the unit relationship reveals the operation, the block was method selection.
Mathematics before-and-after
The learner is confused by a final ratio after a transfer.
The diagnostic target is state organisation. Draw START → CHANGE → END and mark what stayed constant.
If the route appears, the learner needed state structure rather than new ratio content.
Mathematics unfamiliar pattern
The learner cannot generalise a pattern.
The diagnostic target is small-case testing. Generate one or two legal next cases and record what changes and what stays fixed.
If a rule becomes visible, the learner needed evidence from cases before abstraction.
Science graph
The learner sees a graph and immediately says the chapter is unknown.
The diagnostic target is axis reading. Name both axes, units and direction of the pattern before recalling a concept.
If the pattern can be described, graph reading is available and explanation can be diagnosed separately.
Science investigation
The learner cannot explain why a test is unfair.
The diagnostic target is variable listing. List every condition that differs between the set-ups.
If more than one relevant condition appears, the learner can diagnose the design without a memorised sentence.
Science explanation
The learner knows the topic but cannot write the answer.
The diagnostic target is mechanism chain. Write condition → scientific process or relationship → observed outcome.
If one link is blank, that blank identifies the missing knowledge more precisely than “I don’t know Science”.
Science inference
The learner is unsure what to conclude from a table.
The diagnostic target is evidence first. Describe the measured result before explaining it.
If the observation is clear, the remaining gap is interpretation rather than data reading.
Science prediction
The learner cannot predict the effect of a changed condition.
The diagnostic target is direction launch. State the known relationship and decide whether the response should increase, decrease or remain similar.
If direction is still impossible, the concept relationship may be missing.
Science measurement
The learner confuses time, rate and amount.
The diagnostic target is measurement identity. Name the instrument, quantity and unit before interpreting the result.
If the categories become clear, the block was measurement identity.
Cross-subject panic after one hard item
The learner assumes the rest of the paper is now beyond reach.
The diagnostic target is attention reset. Mark the item for return, write one restart cue and begin the next clear question.
If performance returns, the problem was attention carryover rather than sudden loss of knowledge.
Cross-subject repeated rereading
The learner rereads several times but cannot start.
The diagnostic target is externalising the task. Write one line: ‘The question wants me to ___ using ___.’
If the sentence cannot be completed, task interpretation is the first repair. If it can, move to evidence or representation.
Cross-subject overchecking
The learner keeps checking because uncertainty remains.
The diagnostic target is failure-mode identification. Name one specific possible error and choose a check that could expose it.
If no specific risk can be named, further checking may be reassurance rather than useful verification.
Cross-subject delayed-practice failure
A learner solved a similar problem yesterday but fails on a changed version today.
The diagnostic target is transfer comparison. Name what is structurally the same and what has changed on the surface.
If structure recognition returns after a cue, transfer and retrieval need practice. If the concept itself is absent, relearning may be needed.
Cross-subject genuine knowledge gap
Task, evidence and representation are clear, but the learner cannot state the required rule, concept or relationship.
The diagnostic target is precise content diagnosis. Stop searching for another launch trick and name the missing knowledge as specifically as possible.
Targeted relearning is efficient here because the gap has been narrowed to a concept rather than a vague feeling of failure.
The difference between a cue and an answer
A useful cue reveals structure without completing the problem. “What is the target quantity?” is a cue. “Divide these two numbers” often gives away the method. “Which paragraph contains the event?” is a cue. Supplying the exact answer sentence removes the evidence-search job.
Parents and tutors should use the smallest cue that restarts independent thinking. If the learner can continue from there, the support has diagnosed and released the blockage. If every next step still needs to be supplied, the gap is deeper.
When to leave the question during the examination
The examination is not the place for a long diagnostic interview. Use a compressed version: one launch move, one alternative move if the question is valuable and progress seems realistic, then release the item if no route appears. Leave a restart cue and protect the rest of the paper.
Detailed diagnosis belongs in review after the paper. During the examination, the learner’s aim is to distinguish recoverable stuckness from expensive stuckness quickly enough to manage time.
A seven-day diagnostic practice cycle
- Day 1: task interpretation and command-word launches.
- Day 2: evidence-location launches in English and Science.
- Day 3: representation launches in Mathematics.
- Day 4: retrieval cues versus full reteaching.
- Day 5: mixed questions where the learner names the blockage after one launch attempt.
- Day 6: timed practice with a short launch limit and return cues.
- Day 7: delayed transfer using new surface contexts and no tutor prompts.
Parents and tutors: replace ‘you do not know this’ with a test
When a child says “I don’t know,” avoid immediately reteaching the chapter. Ask for one launch move first. If the child can identify the task, organise the evidence and continue, the problem was not simply missing knowledge.
When the launch move fails and a precise concept is missing, teach that concept directly. Accurate diagnosis avoids unnecessary repetition while still taking real knowledge gaps seriously.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a launch move take in the exam?
Usually seconds. The aim is to create a route, not to complete a long diagnosis. If no useful progress appears, protect time and consider returning later.
What if I know the topic but cannot recognise the question?
That is often a transfer or representation problem. Practise mapping varied contexts back to the same underlying concept.
What if a hint immediately makes the answer obvious?
That suggests knowledge may exist but retrieval or task recognition is fragile. Use delayed practice without the hint to strengthen independence.
When is it really a knowledge gap?
Evidence is stronger when the task and representation are clear, reasonable cues fail, and the learner cannot explain or apply the relevant concept across nearby examples.
Can anxiety look like a knowledge gap?
Yes. Anxiety can disrupt attention and retrieval. A small externalising move such as labelling the target or writing known facts can help separate a temporary block from absent knowledge.
Should low marks always lead to more content revision?
No. Low marks can come from knowledge, transfer, task interpretation, representation, execution, checking or time control. Diagnose the recurring error family first.

The performance rule
Do not turn “I cannot start” into “I do not know” too quickly. Try one small launch move, observe what changes, classify the blockage and repair the right thing.
