How to Perform in PSLE | Learner’s Guide Vol 0020 | Answer Every Part Before You Combine Them

PSLE questions often look like one question while quietly containing two, three or four jobs. A learner may be asked to identify a reason and support it, calculate an intermediate value and then find a final quantity, or compare two Science set-ups and explain why the difference occurs. When the learner blends the jobs too early, one part can disappear inside the answer.

This Learner’s Guide develops one examination habit: answer every part before you combine them. The learner first identifies the separate jobs, gives each part a place, and only then integrates them into one coherent response. This prevents polished but incomplete answers.

The method applies across English, Mathematics and Science and extends the minimum-complete-answer rule. Vol 0018 asks whether an answer is complete. Vol 0020 asks whether every hidden sub-job inside the question has been secured.

SPLIT THE TASK → NAME EACH PART → ANSWER EACH PART → CHECK COMPLETENESS → COMBINE ONLY AFTER NOTHING IS MISSING.

The quick answer: multi-part questions are small systems

A multi-part question has components that may be independent or dependent. The safest approach is to mark the jobs before writing. If the stem says identify and explain, there are at least two jobs. If it says calculate the amount used and hence find the amount remaining, the second target depends on the first.

The learner should be able to turn the question into a short checklist. That checklist becomes the answer skeleton.

Command words that often hide more than one job

  • and — often joins two requirements.
  • then — often signals a second step.
  • hence — usually requires an earlier result to be reused.
  • compare and explain — evidence first, reasoning second.
  • state with a reason — claim plus support.
  • identify and give evidence — interpretation plus textual support.
  • calculate and give your answer in — mathematical result plus required unit or form.

The task-splitting routine

  1. Underline every command word.
  2. Circle the object, quantity or idea each command applies to.
  3. Number the jobs if there are two or more.
  4. Answer each job separately first.
  5. Mark any dependency between parts.
  6. Combine only after all required components are present.

Why combining too early causes omissions

Combining forces the learner to manage content, sequence, evidence and wording at once. Splitting reduces working-memory load. Each part becomes visible, checkable and recoverable. Integration happens only after the answer has all its pieces.

The part-to-line map

Draw a small mental arrow from each task part to the line that fulfils it. If one command has no matching line, the answer is incomplete. If several lines repeat the same job while another job is missing, the answer is unbalanced.

Dependency chains

Some jobs depend on earlier jobs. A Mathematics final target may depend on an intermediate result; a Science explanation may depend on the measured comparison; an English inference may depend on a resolved reference. Mark the dependency before combining.

If an early part is uncertain, later work should remain traceable so the learner can repair the chain rather than restart everything.

Partial-credit recovery

Separating parts makes a script recoverable. Even if one later explanation fails, a correct earlier comparison or calculation remains visible. In practice, this also helps diagnose whether the first broken link was reading, knowledge, method or execution.

Use Vol 0009 to classify the failure rather than assuming the whole question was weak.

The completeness audit

  1. Return to the command words.
  2. Count the jobs.
  3. Point to the answer segment for each job.
  4. Check dependencies, units, evidence and comparison basis.
  5. Only then polish or shorten.

Under time pressure

Use one fast question: How many jobs? If the answer is two, secure two components. If three, secure three. Then move on. The number of sentences is irrelevant; task coverage is what matters.

Vol 0018’s minimum-complete rule still applies: complete the required structure before adding optional detail.

A seven-day multi-part cycle

  1. Day 1: underline command words in mixed questions.
  2. Day 2: split English multi-part stems.
  3. Day 3: split Mathematics chained targets.
  4. Day 4: split Science evidence-and-explanation tasks.
  5. Day 5: practise part-to-line mapping.
  6. Day 6: timed mixed set with visible part numbering.
  7. Day 7: delayed transfer without visible numbering.

What parents and tutors should ask

Ask: How many jobs are in this question? Which sentence or line answers each? Does part two depend on part one? Did you answer the final target or stop at an intermediate result? These questions reveal task control without supplying the content.

Common mistakes

  • One-command fixation: seeing only the first verb.
  • Polished incompleteness: fluent language with one task part missing.
  • Intermediate stopping: treating a bridge result as the final answer.
  • Evidence-reason collapse: mixing observation and explanation until neither is clear.
  • Uneven comparison: describing one side fully and the other vaguely.
  • Checking by length: assuming a long answer must be complete.

Frequently asked questions

Should I always number my answer?

No. Numbering is a practice scaffold. In the examination, use the clearest natural form while keeping the parts mentally distinct.

What if one sentence answers two parts?

That is fine if both parts are explicit and complete. Do not split just for appearance.

What if part two depends on a wrong part one?

Keep the method visible and use the earlier result consistently where appropriate. In review, diagnose the first broken link.

How do I know when to combine?

Combine only after every required component is secure and the relationship between them is clear.

Independence indicators

  • Command words are noticed automatically.
  • The learner can state how many jobs a stem contains.
  • Intermediate results are not mistaken for final targets.
  • English comparisons cover both sides.
  • Science evidence and explanation remain distinct.
  • Checking searches for missing parts rather than extra length.
