Advanced Science Tutorials | How to Write Scientific Explanations: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning and Mechanisms

How to write scientific explanations is a different problem from simply knowing the right fact. A scientific explanation must answer the question, use relevant evidence and make the reasoning visible. Students often lose marks because one of those pieces is missing: the claim is vague, the evidence is copied without interpretation, or the reasoning jumps from observation to conclusion without explaining the scientific mechanism. The result can contain correct vocabulary while still failing to explain.

This Advanced Science Tutorials guide is written for parents and students in Sengkang, Punggol and across Singapore who search for scientific explanation, claim evidence reasoning, CER Science, how to write a Science explanation, Science open-ended questions, evidence-based explanation, how to explain in Science and scientific argument. It builds explanation writing from Primary Science through PSLE and Secondary G1, G2 and G3.

NSTA describes claim, evidence and reasoning as a framework that can help students move beyond simple answers: the claim answers the question, the evidence supports the claim using observations or data, and the reasoning applies scientific ideas to explain why that evidence supports the claim. NSTA also cautions that explanation should remain open to contrary evidence and alternative explanations rather than becoming a one-sided exercise in defending an initial answer. See NSTA: Helping Students Write Scientific Explanations, NSTA: Supporting Students in Writing Scientific Explanations, and NSTA: Teaching Claims–Evidence–Reasoning.

The scientific-explanation architecture

  1. Question: what exactly must be explained?
  2. Claim: what answer or relationship are you proposing?
  3. Evidence: what observation, measurement, graph, table or result supports the claim?
  4. Reasoning: what scientific concept or mechanism explains why the evidence supports the claim?
  5. Qualification: under what conditions does the explanation apply?
  6. Alternative: what other explanation could fit, and what evidence distinguishes it?
  7. Conclusion: state the explanation at the strength the evidence permits.

Primary 1 and Primary 2: oral explanation first

Young learners can explain using “I think… because I observed…” without formal CER labels. The important habit is that the reason should connect to evidence rather than simply repeat the conclusion.

Parents can ask, “What makes you think that?” and “What did you notice?” before offering the adult explanation.

Primary 3 and Primary 4: complete the missing middle

Primary Science learners often state the condition and result but omit the mechanism. “The metal spoon became hot because it was in hot soup” restates the setup. A stronger answer makes the transfer process visible.

The useful prompt is: “What happened in between?”

Primary 5 and Primary 6: evidence plus mechanism

Older Primary learners should connect diagrams, experiment results and data to scientific concepts. In PSLE open-ended questions, evidence may be embedded in an unfamiliar setup. The student must select only what supports the answer and avoid adding irrelevant textbook facts.

Use Primary 6 Open-Ended Questions for the level-specific examination route.

Secondary G1, G2 and G3: explanation becomes more analytical

Lower Secondary Science expects increasingly explicit use of models, equations, graphs, practical evidence and quantitative relationships. Explanations should distinguish observation from interpretation and should become more careful about scope, uncertainty and alternative explanations.

A strong Secondary explanation often links multiple representations: data → model → mechanism → conclusion.

Self-check

Explanation principle. Writers should evaluate their own explanation before submission.

Common failure. Students reread for spelling only.

Better writing move. Check claim, evidence, reasoning, condition and contradiction.

Question to ask. Could another reader follow the mechanism?

Practice task. Use a five-point checklist.

The explanation-quality test is whether a reader can trace the path from evidence to claim without filling in an unstated scientific step. If the answer depends on the examiner guessing what the student meant, the reasoning is still incomplete.

Revision

Common failure. Students change words without changing reasoning.

Better writing move. Add missing evidence or mechanism.

Question to ask. What scientific idea is still implicit?

Practice task. Revise after feedback.

When tuition may help with scientific explanations

Extra support can help when a learner knows the facts but repeatedly writes incomplete open-ended answers, copies evidence without reasoning or uses keywords without mechanism. A tutor should diagnose which component is missing, model it once and then fade the scaffold.

Frequently asked questions

What is claim-evidence-reasoning?

A claim answers the question, evidence supports the claim with observations or data, and reasoning explains why the evidence supports the claim using scientific ideas.

Do all Science answers need CER?

No. CER is a useful planning framework for evidence-based explanations, but short state or calculate questions may not require all three parts explicitly.

What is the difference between evidence and reasoning?

Evidence comes from observations, measurements or provided information; reasoning uses scientific concepts to explain why that evidence supports the claim.

Why do my explanations sound repetitive?

You may be restating the question or evidence instead of adding the mechanism. Ask what happens in between.

Should I use keywords?

Yes when they name the correct scientific process or relationship, but keywords alone do not replace reasoning.

How long should a scientific explanation be?

Long enough to answer the command and show the required relationships, but no longer than necessary. Use school mark allocation and feedback to calibrate.

Further reading

Final operating rule

A scientific explanation must do more than contain correct Science words. Answer the question. Select evidence that matters. Make the mechanism visible. Keep the conclusion inside the evidence. Consider alternatives when appropriate. Then remove unnecessary facts. The result should let another reader see not only what you think, but why the evidence justifies it.

Question reading — explanation clinic 1

Start with a fresh Science question where question reading matters. Ask the learner to write a first answer without a model response. Then identify whether the required explanation component is present and scientifically connected.

Surface the common failure: Students write everything they know about the chapter.. Ask how that failure would affect a reader’s ability to follow the logic. Then apply the better move: Translate the command word and target into one sentence. The revision should change the reasoning, not merely make the sentence longer.

Now ask: What must the final sentence answer? Run the practice task: Underline command, object and condition. Compare the revised answer with the evidence in the question. Every scientific claim should be supported and every piece of evidence should have a clear explanatory role.

Finish with delayed transfer to another topic. Explanation skill is durable when the learner can build claim, evidence and reasoning in an unfamiliar context without sentence frames or copied model wording.
