A learner opens a laptop and says, “This counts towards my grade. Can you check it before I submit?”
The request sounds ordinary. Tutors review work all the time. Yet the moment the work is assessed, authenticated or governed by school-specific conditions, ordinary tutoring permissions may no longer apply. A tutor who improves the artefact too directly can cross an important line: the submitted work may stop being a fair representation of what the learner produced under the permitted conditions.
This article owns that line. It is not a general article about plagiarism, artificial intelligence or examination regulation. It asks a tutoring decision: how can a tutor continue to teach when the learner brings assessed work, without becoming the hidden author, editor, solver or decision-maker inside what the learner must submit as their own?
The direct answer
Classify the work before helping. If it is ordinary practice, normal tutoring can usually continue within the usual learning and independence boundaries. If it is assessed, authenticated, supervised, restricted or governed by a teacher’s specific instructions, those rules take priority. Where the permitted support is unclear, move the teaching away from the live submission: explain the underlying concept, practise on a parallel task, discuss criteria at a general level, ask the learner to explain their own decisions, or direct the learner back to the school for clarification.
The strongest default is simple: help the learner become more capable; do not quietly become more present in the submitted product than the assessment allows.
This is a boundary of authorship and evidence. The question is not whether the tutor’s advice is intelligent. The question is whether the final artefact still means what the assessor thinks it means.
Why assessed work changes the tutoring relationship
Normal tutoring is deliberately interventionist. The tutor explains, models, questions, scaffolds, corrects, prompts and sometimes supplies worked examples. Those actions are legitimate because the tutorial is a learning environment. The learner is there to receive help.
Assessment can have a different purpose. It may be trying to establish what the learner can produce independently, what sources were used, whether specified conditions were followed, or whether the candidate can authenticate the submitted work. In that setting, more help is not automatically better help.
This difference is easy to miss because the same essay, problem set, design, project or presentation can function first as a learning artefact and later as assessment evidence. The tutor must identify which mode is active before deciding how to intervene.
Start with the governing rules, not the tutor’s preference
There is no universal amount of outside help that is permitted on every assessed task. Rules vary by school, qualification, subject and assignment. Some tasks allow formative feedback on drafts. Some permit discussion but not direct editing. Some require acknowledgement of assistance. Some restrict access to materials, collaboration or digital tools. Some require the work to be completed under supervision.
The learner’s teacher, school, awarding body or assessment instructions own those conditions. The tutor does not get to replace them with a personal theory of what “ought to be allowed”.
Current Joint Council for Qualifications coursework instructions in the United Kingdom, effective from 1 September 2026, state that candidates must not submit work that is not their own and set requirements around attribution, assistance and AI use. Ofqual’s March 2026 resources similarly warn that AI-generated coursework passed off without proper disclosure undermines assessment integrity. These are England/UK qualification rules, not Singapore rules, but they illustrate why a tutor should never infer permission merely because a tool or adult can help.
For Singapore learning, the Ministry of Education’s AI in Education Framework provides a broader policy framework around Agency, Inclusivity, Fairness and Safety. It supports human professional judgement and responsible AI use, but it is not itself a blanket rule telling private tutors what assistance is permitted on every school assignment. School and task instructions still matter.
The first classification: practice, formative work or authenticated assessment?
Before reading deeply, ask what kind of artefact this is. A practice essay that will receive teacher comments is not necessarily governed like a graded coursework submission. A worksheet that contributes to a class participation mark may have different rules from a project that requires a declaration of authenticity. A draft may allow feedback that the final submission does not.
The tutor should look for explicit instructions. Does the task say “individual work”? Does it identify permitted resources? Does it prohibit outside assistance? Does the teacher expect drafts? Must sources or AI use be acknowledged? Is there a declaration? If the learner does not know, the uncertainty itself is information.
Where the status cannot be established safely, the tutor can continue teaching without touching the live artefact. That is often the cleanest solution.
The submission boundary
The submission boundary separates two objects: the learner, whom the tutor is allowed to teach, and the assessed artefact, whose production may be restricted.
A tutor can teach argument structure without rewriting the learner’s assessed paragraph. A tutor can teach how to test a hypothesis without choosing the learner’s final investigation design. A tutor can explain a mathematical technique on a fresh problem without solving the exact assessed problem. A tutor can discuss what a criterion means without converting the criterion into a sentence-by-sentence answer plan.
The more tightly the assessment is meant to represent independent performance, the more useful this separation becomes. Teaching moves outward to a parallel environment; the learner then returns to the submission and makes the decisions.
This is not a trick for bypassing rules. If the assessment prohibits outside tutoring on the relevant content or requires supervised work, the tutor must respect that. Parallel practice is appropriate only when ordinary teaching outside the assessed artefact remains permitted.
A fictional composite case: the almost-finished essay
This case is fictional and constructed. It is not a customer testimonial. Maren has written an assessed essay. Her teacher permits general feedback on one draft but requires the final wording to be the student’s own. Maren asks the tutor to “make the introduction stronger”.
The tutor could produce a polished replacement paragraph in thirty seconds. That would be efficient and educationally poor. Maren would receive better sentences without necessarily becoming better at building an introduction, and the final submission would contain language chosen by the tutor.
Instead, the tutor asks Maren what claim the introduction is supposed to establish and which sentence currently does that work. Maren identifies that the opening contains context but no controlling claim. The tutor then closes the live draft and uses a different, invented topic to compare three possible introduction structures. Maren explains which one best establishes direction and why.
The assessed draft is reopened. Maren rewrites the introduction herself. The tutor checks only against the level of feedback the teacher permits and does not supply replacement wording. The learning happens; authorship remains visible.
Feedback can cross the line without anyone writing a sentence
Tutors sometimes think authorship is protected as long as they never type into the document. That is too narrow.
A tutor can effectively author a response by dictating every conceptual move: “Use this argument first, cite this evidence, then say this, reject that example, move this paragraph, conclude with this point.” The learner may physically press the keys while the intellectual work has been outsourced.
The relevant question is not only who wrote the words. It is who selected the ideas, structure, evidence, method and decisions that the assessment is meant to sample.
Conversely, not every suggestion is authorship. “Your second paragraph makes two claims; decide which one it is actually proving” preserves a substantial learner decision. “Put this exact claim first and use these three reasons” may not. The permitted boundary depends on the task rules, but the tutor should always notice how much decision-making the feedback is carrying.
Criteria are not automatically an answer key
Assessment criteria can be legitimate teaching material. Learners often need to understand what “analyse”, “justify”, “coherent”, “accurate” or “well supported” means. Explaining such criteria is not the same as completing the task.
The risk appears when the tutor translates a broad criterion into a custom route so detailed that the learner no longer has to make the assessed decisions. This is closely related to The Criteria Disclosure Gate. That volume owns how success criteria can become hidden answer keys. The Submission Boundary adds a further constraint: when the work will be submitted for assessment, over-specific guidance may also weaken authentication.
A safe tutor keeps asking: which decisions is this assessment supposed to belong to the learner? Those are the decisions the tutor should be especially careful not to pre-make.
AI does not create a separate moral universe
Generative AI makes the boundary more visible because it can produce polished text, code, explanations, plans and images quickly. But the underlying issue is older than AI: whose work is being assessed, what assistance is permitted, and what must be disclosed?
Ofqual’s 9 March 2026 school resources state that AI should not be used to generate coursework without proper disclosure. JCQ’s current guidance similarly requires candidates to submit their own work and, where AI-generated content is used under permitted conditions, to meet specified attribution and authentication requirements. Those rules apply to particular UK qualifications and should be labelled as such.
A tutor should therefore resist two opposite errors. The first is assuming any AI use is automatically cheating. The second is assuming disclosed AI use is automatically permitted. The governing assessment instructions decide what use is allowed. Disclosure does not convert a prohibited use into an acceptable one.
The same principle applies to human help. “My tutor told me what to write” is not made educationally sound merely because everyone knows a tutor exists.
Legitimate access support must remain legitimate
Protecting assessment integrity does not mean stripping away accommodations, access arrangements or assistive supports that the learner is entitled to use. If a learner has an approved reader, scribe, extra time, assistive technology, modified format or other access provision, the submission boundary must be interpreted around the actual permitted conditions.
The target is unauthorised assistance, not support itself. A learner who can demonstrate the intended capability only when text is presented in an accessible format may still be providing valid evidence of that capability. Removing the access support in the name of “independence” can make the assessment less valid, not more.
This is why The Access-Support Boundary remains relevant. The tutor must separate access to the task from assistance that performs the target skill.
Use parallel work to keep teaching alive
When the live submission is protected, tutors sometimes become overly cautious and stop teaching. That is unnecessary in many situations.
Parallel work creates a clean space. If the learner is writing an assessed history explanation, teach causal structure using a different historical case or a fictional example. If the learner has an assessed spreadsheet task, teach the function on a fresh dataset. If the learner has a Mathematics investigation, practise the relevant representation on a non-assessed problem. If the learner has a presentation, rehearse general speaking skills on unrelated content.
The key is that the parallel task should teach the transferable capability without reproducing the exact intellectual decisions that are supposed to be assessed. Afterward, the learner returns to the live work and decides what to use.
A changed example also improves the educational quality of the evidence. If the learner can apply the idea only to the tutor’s demonstration, learning may still be fragile. Transfer to the assessed context should belong to the learner.
Questions are not automatically safe
Socratic language can still carry answers. “Have you thought about arguing that the policy failed because implementation was inconsistent?” is grammatically a question but functionally a supplied claim.
A tutor who wants to preserve learner authorship should distinguish information-seeking questions from route-feeding questions. “What is your claim?” exposes the learner’s thinking. “Which evidence do you think supports it?” asks for a decision. “What would someone who disagrees say?” opens a test. These questions can still influence the learner, but they leave the central work visible.
The tutor should be especially cautious when a sequence of questions makes only one path possible. The learner may experience the route as self-discovered even though the tutor has progressively constrained every decision.
A second fictional case: the science project
This is a constructed example. Faith brings a school science project and says she cannot decide which variable to change. The written instructions say students may discuss scientific concepts with adults but the experimental question and design must be their own.
The tutor does not suggest a question. Instead, they move to a separate, unrelated investigation and ask Faith to identify independent, dependent and controlled variables. They compare a valid and invalid fair test. Faith then closes the practice material and returns to her project.
She proposes two possible designs. The tutor asks her to explain what each one would let her conclude. Faith rejects one because two variables would change at once. She chooses the other herself.
The tutor has taught experimental reasoning without choosing the assessed design. The distinction matters because the project is supposed to reveal Faith’s ability to apply the reasoning, not the tutor’s ability to design an experiment.
What if the learner has already received too much help?
The tutor should not hide the problem or attempt to make the assistance invisible. If excessive help has already entered an assessed artefact, the appropriate next step depends on the assessment rules. The learner may need to tell the teacher, replace affected work, document the assistance, or follow a school process.
The tutor should not invent a private remediation that creates a cleaner-looking submission while concealing provenance. Assessment integrity depends on truthful conditions.
This can feel uncomfortable because disclosure may carry consequences. Yet a tutoring service should not protect short-term appearance by teaching the learner that authenticity rules are negotiable when adults can disguise the help well enough.
Parents and the temptation of the final check
Parents often ask for reassurance: “Can you please check it before submission?” The request may mean spelling, factual accuracy, whether instructions were followed, or whether the child is likely to obtain a strong mark. Those are different jobs.
The tutor should clarify the permitted level of support and, where necessary, explain why a full pre-submission correction would damage the very evidence the school is trying to collect. A lower mark on genuinely independent work can be more educationally useful than a high mark on a tutor-polished artefact because the teacher can see what needs to be taught next.
That does not mean leaving avoidable misunderstandings untouched in ordinary learning. It means locating the teaching at a point where the learner can use it without corrupting the assessment.
Three-student tuition needs containment
Assessed work creates another group risk: leakage. If one learner’s live assessment question is discussed openly, the other two learners may gain access to content or decisions they should not receive. This is especially serious if classmates share the same assignment.
The tutor should avoid displaying or reading protected work aloud to the group. Where the underlying concept is useful to everyone, convert it into a fresh constructed example that does not reveal live assessment content. If confidentiality or assessment security cannot be protected, the tutor should not use the artefact as group teaching material.
This is also a privacy issue. A learner’s draft, teacher comments and marks are not automatically group resources simply because three students share a table.
The tutor’s own record should be modest and factual
For consequential assessed work, a short note can protect both learner and tutor: what the task was, what the school instructions appeared to allow, what kind of help was given, and whether the learner was directed back to the teacher for clarification.
Do not build a surveillance archive. Keep only what is educationally and operationally necessary, consistent with the wider data-minimisation principles in The Record Minimum.
A useful note might say: “Assessed project; learner reported outside discussion allowed but final design must be own. Taught variable control on parallel example; learner made project decision independently. No edits made to submitted text.”
How to handle uncertainty
The most dangerous sentence is “It should be fine.” If the rules are unclear, confidence is not permission.
A tutor can say to the learner: “I can teach you the underlying skill now, but I do not want to change the submission until we know what your teacher allows.” The learner can then ask the school a precise question: “May I receive feedback on structure before submitting, and if so, what kind?”
This turns uncertainty into a legitimate coordination task rather than a private guess. It also teaches the learner that assessment conditions are part of responsible academic work.
The assistance gradient
Tutoring support is not binary. Between “no help” and “the tutor did it” sits a wide gradient: clarifying the task wording, reminding the learner of previously taught knowledge, asking what they think, explaining a general principle, modelling the principle elsewhere, identifying that something is unclear, pointing to a criterion, naming a missing source, suggesting a structural decision, supplying the decision, rewriting language, or producing the final response. Different assessments permit different points on that gradient.
The tutor should therefore avoid relying on a vague internal feeling that a particular intervention is “only feedback”. A comment can carry very little intellectual work or almost all of it. “Check whether your evidence actually supports the claim” leaves the learner with diagnosis and repair. “Replace this evidence with source B and argue that it proves X” has already performed much of the reasoning.
A useful self-check is to ask what the learner still has to decide after receiving the help. If the important decisions are gone, the tutor’s contribution may be larger than it sounds. That does not automatically mean it is prohibited; some assessments permit extensive formative guidance. It means the tutor must compare the actual contribution with the actual rules rather than the label attached to the help.
Do not confuse error detection with error repair
Some tasks allow a teacher or tutor to indicate that something needs attention while requiring the learner to find and repair the problem. That distinction can preserve useful evidence. If a tutor says, “There is a problem with how paragraph three uses its source,” the learner still needs to locate, explain and fix the issue. If the tutor highlights the exact sentence, supplies the missing interpretation and gives replacement wording, a much larger part of the assessed process has moved outside the learner.
Where the governing rules permit feedback, tutors can often preserve learning by moving from increasingly specific correction towards questions that return the decision. The goal is not artificial vagueness. The goal is to avoid performing more of the assessed cognitive work than the rules allow.
This boundary also helps after submission. Once the work is no longer live assessment evidence and the school permits review, the tutor may be able to analyse the piece much more directly. A delayed post-assessment lesson can sometimes be the safest place for the detailed teaching that would have contaminated the live submission.
The learner should understand the boundary too
A tutor who silently withholds help can feel arbitrary. The learner may conclude that the tutor is being unhelpful at exactly the moment support matters most. Explain the educational reason in age-appropriate language: “I can teach you how to do this, but this piece is supposed to show what you can produce. We will practise the skill on another example, then you decide what belongs in your submission.”
This explanation supports agency because the learner learns to recognise assessment conditions rather than treating them as mysterious adult restrictions. Older learners can be asked to state the permitted-help rules before a major project begins. Younger learners may need the tutor or parent to help locate the teacher’s instructions.
Over time, the learner should become better at asking the right question before seeking assistance: “Is this practice I can work through with someone, or is this evidence I am expected to produce under particular conditions?” That distinction is itself part of academic responsibility.
Delayed evidence: did the learner gain capability or only protect the submission?
The tutoring job is not complete when the assignment is submitted. If the tutor taught a transferable skill on parallel material, check it later under a fresh condition. Can the learner plan a new argument without the assessed draft? Can they identify variables in another investigation? Can they use the spreadsheet function on a new dataset?
This delayed check is important because ethical restraint can otherwise become educational passivity. The tutor may successfully avoid contaminating the assessment but fail to build the capability that caused the learner to seek help.
A strong submission boundary protects both purposes: the assessor receives honest evidence, and the learner still receives real teaching.
Common failure modes
- The ghostwriter. The tutor rewrites language, reasoning or code that the learner then submits as their own.
- The invisible architect. The learner writes the words, but the tutor chooses every important idea, structure or method.
- The rules-by-assumption failure. The tutor guesses what assistance is allowed rather than checking instructions.
- The disclosure fallacy. A prohibited form of help is treated as acceptable merely because it could be acknowledged.
- The overcorrection. Fear of contamination stops legitimate teaching on parallel material.
- The accommodation purge. Legitimate access supports are removed in the name of independence.
- The group leak. Live assessed material is exposed to peers who may share the task.
- The polished-evidence trap. A higher-quality submission is mistaken for stronger learner capability.
- The concealment repair. Excessive assistance has occurred, and the response is to hide it rather than follow the governing process.
When that distinction becomes habitual, the tutor is no longer policing a rule at the last minute. The learner is learning to manage help ethically as part of studying, just as they learn to manage sources, deadlines and feedback.
Research and policy boundaries
This article combines educational reasoning with current assessment-policy examples. JCQ’s 2026 coursework instructions and Ofqual’s March 2026 resources are authoritative for the UK contexts they govern; they are not global law and do not automatically govern Singapore school assignments. The MOE AI in Education Framework is an official Singapore framework for responsible AI in teaching and learning, but it does not replace each school’s or assessment’s specific instructions.
The distinction between learner teaching and artefact authorship is therefore a professional principle rather than a universal regulatory formula. The exact permission boundary must be recovered from the applicable task, school, centre or awarding-body rules.
No checklist in this article can authenticate a submission. The tutor can only control their own contribution, preserve a truthful record where needed, and direct unresolved questions to the assessment owner.

A final practical distinction is between reviewing the learner and reviewing the product. After an assessed task is safely submitted, the tutor can often examine what the experience revealed: where planning stalled, which concept was fragile, what feedback the school returned and what future practice is justified. That post-submission review can be much richer than pre-submission polishing because the evidence is no longer being altered before the assessor sees it. The tutor can then convert a one-off assignment into future capability without changing the historical record of what the learner actually submitted.
The final return
The tutor’s temptation is understandable. A learner has worked hard. The deadline is close. The tutor can see exactly how to improve the piece. Why not help?
Because assessment sometimes needs the tutor to do something harder than improving the artefact. It needs the tutor to protect the meaning of the artefact.
The learner can still receive excellent teaching. Explain the concept. Build the background knowledge. Practise on a parallel task. Clarify a criterion. Ask the learner to articulate their reasoning. Rehearse the underlying skill. Preserve authorised access supports. Then give the work back.
A strong tutor does not prove usefulness by leaving fingerprints on every good submission. Sometimes the most professional contribution is visible in what the learner can now do, while the submitted work remains unmistakably the learner’s own.
