The gate has opened.
The learner does need structured help again.
Now comes a more difficult question.
What exactly should return?
A tutor can make a correct re-entry decision and still build the wrong programme afterwards. The family can identify a genuine problem, select a competent tutor and begin with good intentions—then slowly reconstruct the old dependence because nobody designed the support route as a temporary state.
The calendar fills first. The boundaries blur later.
One diagnostic session becomes weekly tuition. Weekly tuition expands from one weak function to several subjects. The tutor begins choosing the learner’s priorities, checking every assignment, predicting every test and interpreting every mark. Support becomes useful in so many small ways that its original job disappears from view.
A Re-Entry Plan is a temporary support route built around one current educational job, with its boundaries, evidence, fading sequence and exit conditions defined before routine support has time to become the new normal.
The previous volume, The Tutor Handbook Vol No.0043 | The Re-Entry Gate, owned the decision about whether structured intervention should return at all.
This volume starts one step later.
The gate has already said yes.
Now the tutor must build a route that helps enough, stays narrow enough, produces evidence quickly enough, changes when the learner changes and contains a credible path back out from the first day.

- School, home and tuition should have different jobs inside one coherent learner system.
- Reasonable adjustments or accessibility supports may need to persist; do not confuse legitimate continuing access support with avoidable dependence.
- A good Re-Entry Plan ends with the learner owning more of the system than at the moment of re-entry.
1. What This Volume Owns
The Re-Entry Plan owns the operational design of temporary structured tutoring after re-entry has already been justified.
It does not decide whether a learner needs help in the first place. That belongs to The Re-Entry Gate.
It does not own the original diagnosis of old cause, new cause or mixed cause. That remains with The Differential.
It does not decide the smallest sufficient intervention after diagnosis. That remains with The Branch Point.
It does not own how much moment-to-moment help the tutor gives. That belongs to The Dose.
It does not own the mechanics of support withdrawal. That belongs to The Fade.
And it does not own the final proof that the learner can again carry the function. That belongs to The Independence Test.
The Re-Entry Plan connects those owners into one temporary route.
2. The Gate Says Yes. The Plan Still Has to Say What.
“Yes, this learner needs structured support again” is not yet a programme.
The plan needs nouns and verbs.
What capability is unstable?
What decision is failing?
What tutor function should return?
What work should remain learner-owned?
What evidence will be collected?
What changes first if the intervention works?
What happens if it does not?
What will allow the support to reduce?
What will allow it to stop?
A gate authorises movement. A plan controls the movement after the gate opens.
3. Temporary Does Not Mean Casual
Temporary support can be rigorous.
It can last one session, three weeks, a term or a carefully defined transition period. The word temporary does not specify duration. It specifies that duration is not self-justifying.
A temporary plan has a current purpose and a review mechanism. It remains only while the purpose remains real.
A permanent-looking programme can therefore be temporary in logic if every part is repeatedly justified by present evidence. And a two-week intervention can become unbounded in logic if nobody knows what the two weeks are meant to change.
The professional distinction is not short versus long.
It is bounded versus automatic.
4. Design Backwards From Exit
Most tutoring plans are designed forwards.
Week one: revise.
Week two: practise.
Week three: practise more.
Week four: see how it goes.
The Re-Entry Plan starts at the other end.
What would the learner have to be able to do, under what conditions, for this support to become unnecessary again?
Once that is defined, the tutor can work backwards.
Exit state → evidence required → transfer conditions → fading sequence → training sequence → initial support.
This prevents the intervention from mistaking activity for direction.
5. The Re-Entry Plan Equation
A useful compression is:
Fresh Baseline + Named Job + Tutor Function + Scope Boundary + Evidence Cycle + Fade + Exit Condition = Re-Entry Plan.
If one term is missing, the plan becomes vulnerable.
- No fresh baseline: the tutor may rebuild an outdated programme.
- No named job: everything becomes eligible for intervention.
- No tutor function: support becomes personality-driven rather than role-driven.
- No boundary: scope expands.
- No evidence cycle: calendar replaces feedback.
- No fade: successful support becomes sticky.
- No exit condition: time becomes the reason to continue.
6. Start With the Five eduKate Layers
The first planning error is to compress every difficulty into “needs tuition”.
Instead, separate five layers:
- Learning: what knowledge, representation, concept, procedure or reasoning capability needs to be acquired, repaired or made usable?
- Studying: what must the learner choose, organise, retrieve, review, correct or continue outside direct teaching?
- Training: what already-understood capability needs repetition, variation, delay, integration, speed, recovery or transfer?
- Education: what school, curriculum, transition, subject, assessment or pathway demand must the learner navigate?
- Improvement: what feedback loop must the learner learn to operate so future errors lead to better decisions rather than renewed dependence?

A Re-Entry Plan should state which layers are active and which are not.
7. Establish a Fresh Baseline
A learner who has returned to support is not a restored copy of the learner who left.
Some old capabilities may be stronger. Some may have faded. New topics may now depend on different prerequisites. Study habits may have matured. Examination conditions may have become harder. The learner may now be better at asking for help, worse at managing workload, more fluent in one subject and less confident in another.
So the plan begins with a present-tense baseline.
- What can the learner do independently now?
- What requires a cue?
- What requires explanation?
- What survives delay?
- What survives changed questions?
- What collapses under timing?
- What school evidence confirms the pattern?
- What has the learner already tried?
- What ordinary supports are already working?
- What old weakness has not returned?
The baseline protects the learner from being forced back into an old identity.
8. Define the Target State
The target state should describe capability, not attendance.
Weak target:
Complete six weeks of algebra tuition.
Stronger target:
Select the appropriate algebraic method in mixed unlabeled questions, execute with stable sign control, verify the result and repeat that performance after delay without tutor prompting.
Weak target:
Improve English writing.
Stronger target:
Interpret purpose and audience accurately, organise a workable plan within a bounded time, draft coherent paragraphs and leave enough shared-clock capacity to revise independently.
Good target states make exit visible.
9. Write the Non-Scope
This may be the most important field in the entire plan.
What will the tutor deliberately not take over?
- The learner still tracks school deadlines.
- The learner still packs materials.
- The learner still chooses ordinary homework order.
- The parent does not send every school message to the tutor.
- The tutor does not pre-correct every assignment.
- A Mathematics re-entry does not automatically become English and Science oversight.
- A performance-coaching block does not become foundation reteaching unless evidence reopens that question.
- A diagnostic session does not automatically become an indefinite weekly arrangement.
A bounded plan is defined as much by the work it refuses as by the work it accepts.
10. Choose the Tutor Class Again
The Tutor Classification Model by eduKateSG remains the clearest way to stop “tutor” from becoming one undifferentiated role.
- Class 0 · Homework Helper: restore a specific task-management routine without permanently owning the learner’s administration.
- Class 1 · Explainer: make one difficult idea or structure accessible enough for the learner to continue.
- Class 2 · Drill Builder: stabilise retrieval, fluency, discrimination or execution through deliberate practice.
- Class 3 · Diagnostic Tutor: separate competing causes when the visible symptom remains ambiguous.
- Class 4 · Route Designer: sequence a transition, study route or prerequisite path.
- Class 5 · Performance Coach: convert available capability into reliable output under representative pressure.
- Class 6 · Learning Architect: integrate several interacting layers when no narrow tutor function is sufficient.
A re-entry programme may move between classes. But every movement should be evidence-based.
11. Commission a Job, Not a Calendar
“Every Wednesday at 5 PM” is an appointment.
It is not a learning plan.
The job might be:
- repair algebraic sign control when operations become multi-step;
- restore independent study selection after a curriculum transition;
- build timed composition planning without reducing idea quality;
- reconstruct a Science causal model and transfer it to unfamiliar apparatus;
- stabilise examination pacing and recovery after blocked questions;
- rebuild assignment-start routines after a period of overload.
Once the job is named, the calendar can serve it.
12. Choose the Smallest Useful Route Size
Re-entry does not automatically mean weekly tuition.
The route can be:
- one explanation plus one delayed retest;
- one diagnostic session plus a home trial;
- a two-session repair;
- a short four-session transfer block;
- a defined examination-performance cycle;
- a temporary weekly route through a transition;
- a multi-layer programme with scheduled reduction points.
The smallest route that can produce credible evidence is usually easier to interpret than a large route in which many variables change at once.
13. Decide the Initial Dose
Frequency is only one part of dose.
The tutor should also decide:
- how quickly prompts are given;
- how explicit explanations become;
- how much practice the tutor selects;
- how much planning is shared;
- how much between-session contact exists;
- how much school work is reviewed;
- how often full-performance tasks are sampled;
- how much of the learner’s week remains untouched.
A weekly lesson can still be a low-control dose if the learner owns everything around it.
A ten-minute daily messaging habit can become a high-control dose if the learner waits for the tutor before every decision.
14. Build the Evidence Cycle Before the Teaching Cycle
The Re-Entry Plan should specify how the tutor will know whether the intervention is changing the intended mechanism.
Baseline attempt → minimum intervention → fresh reattempt → changed surface → delayed return → real school evidence → decision.
This is more informative than counting completed pages.
The tutor needs evidence close to the target and evidence away from the target.
- Close evidence: can the learner perform the repaired move now?
- Delayed evidence: is it still available later?
- Variation evidence: does it survive changed wording or representation?
- Integration evidence: does it work inside the larger task?
- School evidence: does the change appear outside tuition?
- Independence evidence: does performance survive reduced support?
15. Phase A · Stabilise the Learner, Not the Programme
Some re-entry situations begin with noise.
The learner is behind. The parent is worried. Several assignments are due. The learner cannot distinguish the urgent from the important. A poor paper has just returned. Everyone wants a complete solution immediately.
The first phase may need to reduce the field.
- Identify what must happen this week.
- Protect sleep and school attendance.
- Stop multiplying resources.
- Preserve stable subjects and routines.
- Collect the minimum evidence required for the next decision.
- Do not rebuild the learner’s entire life because one area became unstable.
Stabilisation is successful when diagnosis becomes easier, not when the tutor becomes indispensable.
16. Phase B · Confirm the Working Hypothesis
The Re-Entry Gate may have identified the likely failed function, but the first sessions should still test the hypothesis.
Ask whether the predicted pattern appears under a fresh sample.
If a learner is thought to have a method-selection problem, remove method labels.
If a learner is thought to have a retrieval problem, insert delay.
If a learner is thought to have a timing problem, compare untimed and timed performance.
If a learner is thought to have a study-selection problem, ask the learner to choose tomorrow’s work from real school evidence.
The first week should be allowed to falsify the plan.
17. Phase C · Repair or Build the Limiting Function
Once the target is sufficiently clear, reduce unrelated complexity.

The Re-Entry Plan uses that logic without allowing the isolated exercise to become the destination.
Repair should be concentrated enough for the mechanism to change and short enough that the learner remembers what the mechanism belongs to.
18. Phase D · Reintegrate Early
A repaired component can look excellent in isolation.
That is not enough.
Return the component to the larger task while the intervention is still active.
- Put algebraic sign control back inside long equations.
- Put paragraph development back inside a full composition.
- Put evidence reasoning back inside an unfamiliar Science investigation.
- Put time-management rules back inside a representative paper.
- Put study-priority rules back inside a real school week.
If reintegration breaks the repair, that is useful evidence. The learner has not failed. The plan has found the next boundary.
19. Phase E · Change the Surface
A re-entry plan should not graduate a learner from familiar examples.
Change what the real environment will change.
- wording;
- numbers;
- representation;
- topic order;
- evidence position;
- time available;
- competing methods;
- task size;
- context;
- support availability.
The learner should eventually recognise the underlying job when the surface stops announcing it.
20. Phase F · Build the Fade Into the Route
The fade is not the final week.
It begins as soon as support starts working.
Reduce one control at a time.
- Tutor models the decision.
- Tutor asks the learner to predict the decision.
- Learner decides with a cue.
- Learner decides without a cue in familiar work.
- Learner decides in changed work.
- Learner decides after delay.
- Learner decides under representative pressure.
- Tutor audits after the fact instead of guiding before the fact.
- The audit itself becomes less frequent.

21. Phase G · Test Independence Before the Programme Feels Finished
Do not wait until the final lesson to discover that the learner only succeeds when the tutor is present.
Insert unsupported tests throughout the route.
- first attempt before explanation;
- fresh homework-like task between lessons;
- delayed retrieval;
- mixed work;
- school assignment;
- timed set;
- learner-selected study block;
- self-correction before tutor review.
Independence should be sampled while there is still time to repair what the sample reveals.
22. Phase H · Release Is a State Change, Not a Ceremony
The programme ends when the evidence says the tutor function is no longer required at the same intensity.
Possible outcomes include:
- full release;
- reduced frequency;
- move from active repair to maintenance;
- move from tutor-selected work to learner-selected work;
- one later audit;
- handoff to ordinary school support;
- handoff to independent study;
- change to a different tutor class because the original job is complete.

23. The Re-Entry Plan Card
A practical plan can fit on one page if the thinking behind it is clear.
- Trigger: what changed strongly enough to justify re-entry?
- Fresh baseline: what works now, and under what conditions?
- Current failed function: what can the learner not carry reliably?
- Working hypothesis: what is causing the failure?
- Tutor class: what professional function is being commissioned?
- Target state: what should the learner be able to do?
- Scope: what is inside the plan?
- Non-scope: what remains learner-, parent- or school-owned?
- Initial dose: how much support begins now?
- Evidence: what samples will be collected?
- Review point: when or after what evidence will the route be reconsidered?
- Fade sequence: what support disappears first?
- Exit criteria: what evidence justifies reduction or release?
- Reopen rule: what future signal would justify structured support again?
The plan should be understandable to the learner, not only to the tutor.
24. The Scope Boundary Is an Educational Instrument
Boundaries are sometimes treated as administrative restrictions.
In tutoring they are also diagnostic instruments.
If the tutor does not manage English while repairing Mathematics, can the learner still manage English?
If the tutor does not check every homework deadline while rebuilding study selection, can the learner still operate the calendar?
If the parent stops forwarding every teacher message, can the learner retrieve the information personally?
Keeping stable functions outside the programme lets everyone observe whether they really remain stable.
25. Scope Creep Usually Begins as Helpful Behaviour
The tutor notices another issue.
It takes two minutes to fix.
Then another.
Then the parent sends a paper from another subject.
Then the learner asks the tutor which homework to do first.
None of these acts is individually unreasonable.
Together they can shift the support relationship.
A good rule is:
Notice broadly. Intervene narrowly. Expand only when fresh evidence justifies a new commissioned function.
26. The Calendar Trap
Recurring lessons create momentum.
Momentum is useful when the learner needs repeated training.
It becomes dangerous when recurrence itself starts proving necessity.
“We have already booked the term.”
“The exam is still three months away.”
“The tutor knows the child now.”
These can be practical considerations.
They are not evidence that the original tutor function remains necessary.
27. The Activity Trap
Pages completed are easy to count.
Capability is harder.
A learner can finish five worksheets without improving method selection. Complete three compositions without transferring feedback. Attempt four full papers without repairing the first recurring error.

The Re-Entry Plan therefore measures what the learner can now do differently.
28. The Reassurance Trap
Families sometimes buy continuity because continuity reduces anxiety.
That is understandable.
But the tutor should be able to separate emotional reassurance from educational function.

If a family wants an optional periodic review after the learning need has ended, frame it honestly as a review—not as a necessary intervention.
29. School, Home and Tuition Should Not Become Copies of One Another
The learner already has several environments.
School teaches, assesses and provides the live curriculum.
Home provides routines, care, recovery, conversation and age-appropriate responsibility.
Tuition should add something specific: diagnosis, targeted explanation, deliberate repair, high-quality practice, performance calibration or temporary route design.

30. The Plan Should Specify the Handoffs
What happens after tuition?
Where does the repaired capability go?
A strong handoff might be:
School paper reveals failure → tuition isolates and repairs mechanism → learner performs one independent home return → next school task provides real transfer evidence → tutor reviews the evidence and reduces or updates support.

A plan that cannot explain where capability goes after the lesson is still too classroom-bound.
31. Three-Student Tutorials Make Some Parts of Re-Entry Easier to See
A three-student class has a useful feature: the tutor cannot continuously rescue every learner.
That creates natural evidence.
While the tutor works with another student, does the re-entering learner:
- continue productively;
- mark the exact point of uncertainty;
- use an agreed check;
- try a second representation;
- retrieve a prior example strategically;
- wait passively;
- copy without understanding;
- abandon the task?
The gaps in tutor attention become small independence tests.
32. Three Students Do Not Need the Same Re-Entry Plan
Shared class does not mean shared diagnosis.
One student may be re-entering as a Class 1 Explainer case, another as Class 2 Drill Builder, another as Class 5 Performance Coach.
The lesson can still contain shared moments—common explanation, comparison, discussion or full-task practice—while each learner has a different support boundary and exit condition.

33. One-to-One Re-Entry Needs Deliberate Tutor Absence
One-to-one support can produce very clean performance.
The tutor notices every hesitation. The right question arrives at the right second. The learner rarely becomes stuck for long.
This is excellent for diagnosis and intensive repair.
It can also hide dependence.
So a one-to-one Re-Entry Plan should deliberately include:
- silent first attempts;
- wait time before intervention;
- tasks completed between sessions;
- fresh work the tutor has not pre-framed;
- learner diagnosis before tutor diagnosis;
- delayed review rather than immediate correction;
- school evidence that returns without tutor presence.
34. The Parent’s Role Should Be Written Into the Plan
Parents can accidentally become a second tutor layer around the tutor.
The child receives a study plan from tuition, then a monitoring plan from home, then school instructions on top.
A better parent role is specific.
- Provide evidence the tutor cannot see.
- Protect time, sleep and logistics.
- Report patterns rather than labels.
- Avoid completing the tutor’s checks at home.
- Let the learner carry agreed responsibilities.
- Attend review points when decisions genuinely change.
- Do not convert every difficult evening into an emergency message.
The family should know which functions are intentionally being returned to the learner.
35. The Learner’s Role Should Also Be Written
Re-entry should not turn the learner into the object of an adult plan.
Developmentally appropriate ownership can include:
- bringing marked work;
- identifying the hardest moment of the week;
- attempting before asking;
- keeping an error record;
- choosing between two valid practice options;
- running a checking routine;
- reporting whether support still feels necessary;
- explaining the exit condition in their own words.
The learner should gradually understand the architecture well enough to operate more of it personally.
36. School Evidence Keeps the Plan Honest
Tutor-created work is useful because it can isolate variables.
School work is useful because it returns the learner to the real environment.
Use both.
- marked papers;
- teacher comments;
- unseen homework;
- school writing;
- class tests;
- practical or oral performance;
- actual deadlines;
- real subject sequencing.
If performance looks strong only inside tuition, the plan is not finished.
37. Learning Re-Entry
A learning problem means the learner lacks or cannot reliably access a capability itself.
The tutor may need to explain, model, represent, connect prerequisites, ask discriminating questions or create a cleaner sequence.
But the plan should move quickly from “understands with me” to “can reconstruct without me”.
The exit state is not tutor clarity.
It is learner usability.
38. Studying Re-Entry
A studying problem may exist even when subject knowledge is strong.
The learner may not know what to revise, when to return, how to use feedback, how to recover from a missed week or how to choose between competing priorities.
The tutor’s risk is becoming the new permanent scheduler.
A good studying re-entry therefore teaches decision rules, then hands actual decisions back.
Do not build a perfect timetable for the learner. Build a learner who can revise the timetable when reality changes.
39. Training Re-Entry
Training re-entry is different from tutoring re-entry, although the two can overlap.

The two should connect without collapsing into one another.
40. Education Re-Entry
Sometimes the learner is capable, but the educational environment changed.
New subject level.
New school.
New examination architecture.
New workload.
New expectations about independent study.
A Route Designer re-entry can be appropriate without labelling the learner weak.
The exit condition is successful navigation of the new environment, not endless preparation for it.
41. Improvement Re-Entry
The strongest plan does more than fix the current problem.
It improves the learner’s ability to handle the next one.
Can the learner now:
- notice a useful signal;
- avoid overreacting to one event;
- collect evidence;
- separate likely causes;
- choose a small corrective action;
- test whether it worked;
- seek precise help when needed;
- stop the intervention when the job is complete?
This is how a temporary tutoring episode can improve future self-regulation.
42. English Re-Entry Plan
English is especially vulnerable to broad plans because “improve English” can absorb almost anything.
Separate the job.
- reading comprehension;
- evidence selection;
- inference scope;
- sentence control;
- vocabulary precision;
- paragraph development;
- continuous writing;
- situational writing;
- oral response;
- editing;
- timed execution.
A learner who needs help with timed composition planning should not automatically surrender authorship of every school essay to tutor pre-editing.
The plan should improve the writer, not merely improve the document.
43. Mathematics Re-Entry Plan
Mathematics plans should identify the earliest unstable control.
- prerequisite fact or concept;
- representation;
- method selection;
- procedure;
- sign and notation control;
- multi-step organisation;
- checking;
- speed;
- transfer;
- recovery after a blocked route.
Train the failure point intensely enough to change it, then put it back inside mathematics quickly.
Do not keep a learner on isolated drills after the real task has become stable.
44. Science Re-Entry Plan
Science requires similar separation.
- fact recall;
- model understanding;
- mechanism;
- evidence interpretation;
- variable control;
- graph reading;
- claim calibration;
- answer construction;
- application to unfamiliar contexts.
A learner who knows the content but cannot reason from unfamiliar experimental evidence does not need another chapter summary.
The Re-Entry Plan should train the reasoning relationship that actually fails.
45. Additional Mathematics Re-Entry Plan
Additional Mathematics often creates a false remediation story.
A previously strong Mathematics learner encounters longer algebraic chains, denser notation and methods whose success depends on earlier symbolic control.
The learner may not need “more A-Math”.
The learner may need one specific repair—factorisation fluency, equation balance, sign control, representation, method discrimination—then return to the new subject.
The plan should distinguish transition load from true foundational weakness.
46. Examination-Year Re-Entry Plan
High stakes change the cost of instability.
They do not eliminate diagnosis.
An examination-year plan may need faster sampling, more representative conditions and shorter review loops.
But it should still ask:
- Is the problem knowledge, studying or performance?
- Is full-paper volume useful yet?
- What should be isolated before integration?
- What does the clock change?
- What can the learner still own?
- What evidence will let the tutor reduce support before the examination rather than remain central until the last day?
47. Re-Entry After Illness or Absence
Do not make the learner repay every missed minute.
Map the live curriculum.
Identify prerequisites.
Sample what survived.
Restore only what current forward learning needs.

48. Re-Entry for a High-Performing Learner
High marks do not remove the possibility of a legitimate re-entry need.
The learner may be using enormous time to maintain those marks. A new subject may require unfamiliar reasoning. A top score may hide a ceiling. A strong untimed performance may be fragile under actual paper conditions.
The plan should still target a function.
Do not turn high achievement into permission for indefinite enrichment unless enrichment itself is the honestly stated goal.
49. Re-Entry After a Weak Mark but a Stable System
The gate may occasionally open only for a bounded diagnostic block.
The plan should be allowed to discover that recurring tuition is unnecessary.
A poor mark can come from one unusual paper, temporary illness, a single unfamiliar topic or ordinary statistical movement.
If fresh samples show stable capability and independent recovery, stop early.
Stopping early is not a failed programme.

50. Re-Entry When Dependence Is Already Returning
Sometimes the first sign is not a mark.

“Temporary and minimal” does not mean stubbornly under-supporting the learner.
If fresh evidence shows that the original job was too narrow, expand deliberately.
A Class 1 Explainer plan may reveal a deeper prerequisite gap requiring Class 3 diagnosis.
A Class 2 fluency plan may reveal that method selection is the real bottleneck.
A Class 5 performance plan may reveal that untimed capability itself is unstable.
Escalation is justified when evidence changes the model.

The opposite is just as important.
As soon as a tutor function becomes less necessary, reduce it.
- weekly becomes fortnightly;
- fortnightly becomes one audit;

Session one samples sign control across short and long chains, isolates where compression begins to hide the negative sign, rebuilds one-line discipline and ends with fresh transfer items.
Two days later Alicia completes a delayed independent set.
Session two reviews only the errors, mixes the repaired move into unfamiliar questions and removes the visual cue.
Exit condition: stable sign control across a fresh mixed set and the next school sample.
The plan is small because the problem is small.
57. Beatrice · A Route Designer Re-Entry
Beatrice’s content knowledge remains strong, but a heavier school term has destroyed her study-priority decisions.
She chooses familiar work because it feels productive and leaves difficult retrieval until too late.
The plan commissions Class 4 Route Designer support for three weeks.
Week one: tutor and Beatrice classify real tasks by deadline, prerequisite value, forgetting risk and error evidence.
Week two: Beatrice proposes the priorities first; tutor challenges only the weak decisions.
Week three: Beatrice runs the system independently and brings the result for audit.
Exit condition: accurate self-selection across a real week, not a prettier timetable.
58. Ciara · One Explanation, One Return, Then Stop
Ciara cannot understand one Science mechanism despite school teaching and genuine independent attempts.
The plan commissions Class 1 Explainer support.
The tutor builds a causal model, asks Ciara to reconstruct it, changes the context and then sends one delayed explanation task home.
Ciara returns able to explain the mechanism and use it in a changed question.
The plan ends.
Continuing because the session went well would reverse the logic.
59. Denise · Re-Entry That Changes Class
Denise returns for what appears to be Additional Mathematics fluency.
The initial plan commissions Class 2 Drill Builder support.
But the first mixed sample shows something else: when the method is named, Denise executes accurately. When the method is not named, she chooses poorly.
The plan changes.
The tutor reduces repetitive execution and trains discrimination between near-neighbour methods. The re-entry has moved from fluency toward diagnosis and method selection.
A flexible plan is not a vague plan.
It changes because evidence becomes more precise.
60. Emily · Performance Coaching With a Built-In Fade
Emily’s English writing quality is strong, but timed tasks repeatedly finish badly.
The Class 5 plan begins with visible checkpoints for planning, drafting and revision.
Then the checkpoints fade.
First the tutor calls them.
Then Emily marks them on the page.
Then Emily runs the clock internally.
Then she completes a fresh task outside tuition.
Exit condition: stable completion and revision across more than one representative timed task without external pacing prompts.
61. Faith · A Learning Architect Plan That Refuses Whole-System Control
Faith enters a major transition with interacting problems: workload allocation, study selection, full-paper timing and conflicting subject demands.
A Class 6 Learning Architect re-entry is justified.
But Class 6 does not mean the tutor operates everything.
The plan maps the system, identifies two high-leverage rules, aligns subject evidence and creates a weekly review structure.
Faith still chooses the daily order.
Faith still communicates with teachers.
Faith still experiences the consequences of ordinary choices.
The architect designs the route.
The learner increasingly drives it.
62. A Ninety-Minute First Re-Entry Session
One possible information-rich sequence is:
- 0–10 minutes: learner explains the present problem and what has already been tried.
- 10–20 minutes: inspect recent school evidence and establish the fresh baseline.
- 20–35 minutes: independent sample of the target function.
- 35–45 minutes: one discriminating variation to test the working hypothesis.
- 45–60 minutes: minimum useful explanation, repair or training intervention.
- 60–70 minutes: fresh reattempt without the model visible.
- 70–78 minutes: changed surface or integration task.
- 78–84 minutes: identify what the learner will carry between sessions.
- 84–88 minutes: define the first fade and the first review evidence.
- 88–90 minutes: learner explains the plan and exit condition back.

A larger transition or performance problem may need more cycles.

Do not collect evidence merely to document the programme.

A spelling correction and a full examination-performance route should not require identical evidence.
Exit should be demanding enough to protect the learner’s next environment and light enough to avoid turning ordinary human variability into permanent remediation.

- Is the original problem still present?
- Is the original cause still the best explanation?
- What can the learner now do that they could not do at baseline?
- What support is still producing useful change?

The review is not a sales conversation about whether to buy another block.
It is a state decision.

A clear explanation may sound like this:
We have enough evidence to justify structured support again, but we are not restoring the old programme by default. The current job is narrower. We will target this function, preserve the parts your child can still carry, collect fresh evidence, reduce support as soon as the learner can take the function back and review against an exit condition we are defining now.
This tells the family that support is serious without implying that it is automatically permanent.

- Am I prepared for the learner to need less of me sooner than expected?
