Therefore, measure focus by task continuity and output, not by physical presence alone.
First Diagnose Why Focus Is Failing
“Cannot focus” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Possible causes include:
- the task is unclear,
- the task is too large,
- the material is too difficult,
- prerequisite knowledge is missing,
- the environment is interrupting attention,

Focus often fails before the work begins because the instruction is too broad: “Study Science,” “Do revision,” or “Work on Math.” These labels force the learner to decide what to do every few minutes.
Replace broad instructions with visible actions:
- retrieve five definitions,
- solve questions 1–4 without notes,
- correct the two recurring algebra errors,
- write one introduction,

Reduce Competing Signals Before They Compete
Every unnecessary alert, open tab, conversation and visible temptation creates another possible target for attention. Good focus design reduces the number of active competitors.
- silence non-essential notifications,

- keep only the required materials visible,
- put the phone out of immediate reach when it is not part of the task,
- write unrelated reminders on a parking list instead of acting on them immediately.

Shrink the Entry Point

- new concepts,

Save lower-demand organisation and review for later.

Exam focus includes recovery. A difficult question can capture attention even after the student has moved on.
Use a deliberate reset:
