Observable Interface Failure Signatures
- The learner repeatedly taps a neighbouring control.
- Small icons have no text label and are difficult to distinguish.
- A control is usable with a mouse but difficult on a phone.
- The learner zooms the page but controls remain crowded.
- A destructive action sits very close to a common action.
- The same control works in portrait view but not comfortably in landscape, or vice versa.
- The learner cannot tell whether the tap registered.
- Repeated accidental activation causes the study position to be lost.

- The target may genuinely be too small.
- The target may have adequate size but insufficient spacing from neighbours.
- The visual icon may not clearly communicate its function.
- The page may be scaled poorly for the current device.
- The learner may be using an input method with lower precision.
- The target may activate correctly but provide weak confirmation.
- The learner may know how to operate the control but not know which study action is appropriate.
Simple Discrimination Check
Provide a larger or better-spaced equivalent control for the same action. If the learner can now operate the task reliably, the interface target was the weak link. If the learner still cannot decide which control should be used, the problem lies elsewhere.
The Five-Step Target Route
- Name the intended action. Next, back, submit, check, play, open or something else?
- Identify the exact target. Use label, icon and position together.
- Choose a reliable input route. Tap, click, keyboard, voice or equivalent control.
- Confirm the result. Did the expected page, selection, field or state appear?
- Recover immediately if wrong. Undo, go back or restore the last known study position before continuing.
Examples Across Study Situations
Mobile revision: the learner uses a clearly labelled “Next question” button rather than a tiny arrow beside “Reset”.
Interactive diagram: small hotspots are activated one at a time, with visible state confirmation before another target is selected.
Video study: play, speed and captions controls are identified by label rather than tapping nearby icons from memory.
Digital form: the learner confirms the intended checkbox or option before moving to the next field.
Resource and Help Rule
If a control is difficult to activate reliably, changing the input method is a legitimate interface repair. The goal is not to practise tapping until frustration becomes the study activity. Use a larger equivalent control, keyboard access, speech control or another available route where appropriate.
Stop, Record and Resume
If accidental activation changes the study state, record the last known question, page, field or section before trying again. The learner should leave the interface knowing where they are, what control is next and how to recover if the wrong target activates.
How Do We Know?
WCAG 2.2 includes a minimum target-size requirement intended to reduce accidental activation of small or closely spaced controls. W3C notes that touch input is less precise than a mouse pointer and that larger or better-spaced targets help people with dexterity limitations and users in ordinary low-precision situations such as mobile use or movement.

This page does not claim that every small control is unusable or that one pixel dimension solves every interaction problem. Its narrower claim is that when a learner repeatedly activates the wrong control, target size, spacing, input precision and confirmation are legitimate interface explanations that should be checked before the error is attributed to the learner’s subject knowledge.

Ask: “Which control are you trying to activate?”, “What actually changed?”, and “Is there a larger or easier way to do the same thing?” These questions repair the study surface without taking over the educational task.
