Wait, What? The Explanation Can Disappear When You Move the Pointer Toward It

A learner hovers over a graph point and a tooltip appears with the exact value they need. They move the pointer toward the box to read more carefully—and the box disappears. Or a definition appears only while focus remains on one word, covering the sentence the learner is trying to understand.

The information exists, but its temporary interface state can make it difficult to inspect, preserve and return to the study task.

  • The learner can read the tooltip but cannot identify what object triggered it.

Simple Discrimination Check

Make the same information persistent—for example by clicking to pin it, opening a data table, using keyboard focus, or copying the value into a note. If the study task becomes easy once the temporary-content problem disappears, the interface was the weak link. If the learner still cannot interpret the information, the subject problem belongs elsewhere.

The Five-Step Tooltip Route

  1. Name the trigger. Which word, icon, graph point or control is producing the extra content?
  2. Open it deliberately. Hover, focus, click or another available method.
  3. Keep it stable long enough to inspect. Move onto the content if supported, or use a persistent alternative.
  4. Capture only what matters. Record the value, definition, label or source coordinate needed for the current task.
  5. Return to the original object. Reconnect the extracted information to the sentence, graph, table, question or next action.

Examples Across Study Situations

Mathematics: hovering over a plotted point reveals coordinates. The learner records the coordinates and then returns to the comparison question.

Science: a tooltip explains one symbol in an interactive diagram. The learner keeps the diagram visible and records only the symbol meaning needed for the current task.

Languages: a word definition appears on focus. The learner returns immediately to the original sentence after reading the relevant sense.

History: a timeline tooltip gives a date and event note. The learner preserves the event coordinate before moving to the next period.

Resource and Help Rule

If important information is available only through unstable hover behaviour, look for a persistent equivalent such as a table, legend, transcript, details panel or click-to-open state. The learner should not repeatedly fight the pointer merely to recover essential study information.

Stop, Record and Resume

Before leaving a hover-dependent study object, preserve the trigger, the useful information, the source location and the next action. Do not rely on memory that “the value appears when I hover somewhere around here”.

How Do We Know?

WCAG 2.2 requires additional content that appears on hover or keyboard focus to be dismissible, hoverable and persistent under defined conditions. W3C explains that temporary content can interfere with tasks, disappear before users can read it, or become difficult to inspect when a pointer or magnified viewport is involved. Those principles directly support a learner-facing rule: temporary information must remain usable long enough to reconnect it to the study object.

Evidence and Uncertainty Boundary

Hover behaviour differs across browsers, touch devices, reading systems and custom interfaces. Some native browser tooltips behave differently from custom content. This page does not claim that all tooltips are problematic. Its narrower claim is that essential study information should remain perceivable and recoverable long enough for the learner to use it and return to the original task.

Common Mistakes

  • chasing a disappearing tooltip repeatedly;
  • copying a value without recording what point or object produced it;
  • letting a pop-up cover the context it explains;
  • assuming hover is the only trigger when focus or click is available;
  • treating failure to operate temporary content as a subject-knowledge error;
  • using presence of a tooltip as evidence that the learner understood it.

Parent/Tutor Support

Ask: “What caused that box to appear?”, “Can you keep it open long enough to use?”, and “Where does that information go in the actual question?” These questions keep the interface attached to studying rather than turning the adult into the operator.
