A student places a textbook PDF on the left and notes on the right. Or a source article on one side and an essay draft on the other. Or a worked example beside a practice question. Both objects are visible, yet after a few minutes the learner is copying from the wrong section, editing the source instead of the working document, or unable to say which pane contains the current study object.
Visibility alone does not create a study route.

Do Not Shrink Structure Until It Becomes Unusable
Side-by-side display is useful only if each pane still exposes what the learner needs. A graph with unreadable labels, an equation wrapping onto several lines, or a PDF compressed until the heading disappears may be worse than switching between full views. The right layout is the one that preserves operability, not the one that maximises the number of visible windows.
Discrimination Check
Give the learner two already-correct resources with clear pane roles and preserved locations. If the learner can move between them without losing source, focus or next action, the interface is functioning. If the learner still cannot decide what information belongs in the answer, that reasoning problem belongs elsewhere.
Examples Across Subjects
English: passage on the left, response draft on the right. Every quotation transferred keeps its paragraph or page coordinate.
Mathematics: worked example on one side, new problem on the other. The panes remain distinct: example is reference; new problem is the working object.
Science: graph on one side, explanation on the other. The learner checks axes and units before entering a value or claim.
Research: source article beside notes. The learner records source identity while transferring only the relevant claim.

Before closing a split-screen session, preserve:
- the role of each pane;
- the location in each pane;
- what was transferred;
- which pane contains the current working object;
- any unresolved item;
- the first action next time.

Studies have examined the burden of moving among multiple documents and the value of being able to return to source texts while producing an answer.
