Wait, What? Making a Page Easier to Read Can Make Part of the Page Disappear

A learner opens a long article in browser Reader View. Navigation bars, advertisements, side panels and other clutter disappear. The text becomes calmer and easier to scan. But the original page may also contain a figure, interactive element, footnote, caption, related link or layout cue that the simplified view does not preserve in the same way.

The cleaner page can be a better reading surface and a less complete study object at the same time.

  6. Return to the study job. Answer, annotate, verify, cite or continue from the preserved source state.

Reader Mode Is a Transformation, Not a New Source

Mozilla’s Firefox documentation describes Reader View as a way to strip away clutter such as buttons, advertisements, background images and videos while allowing the learner to adjust text size, width, line spacing and theme. That is exactly why the interface is useful. But because the view is transformed, the learner should preserve the original source as the authority for context and elements that may not survive simplification.

Discrimination Check

Open one study article in both normal view and Reader View. Ask the learner to identify the same section in both and note whether any figure, caption, footnote, link or interactive element changed. If the simplified view improves operability while the return path stays intact, the interface is working. Before leaving Reader View, preserve the source URL/title, current section, any missing visual or interactive element that still matters, the passage or question being studied and the next action. A clean reading surface should not become a dead end.

How Do We Know?

Mozilla’s current Reader View documentation explains that the feature removes page clutter and allows substantial visual customisation. W3C accessibility guidance also recognises content transformations as legitimate ways that users and assistive technologies can make material more accessible. Together these sources support a narrow interface principle: transformed views can improve access, but the learner still needs source identity and a route back when the transformation changes context or structure.

Evidence and Uncertainty Boundary

Reader modes differ by browser and webpage, and the exact elements preserved can vary. This page does not claim that Reader View is always better than the original layout.
