Why Ordinary Notes Often Fail as History
A page of copied content may contain a great deal of information and almost no state.
It may not tell the learner:
- which part is now stable;
- which part only worked with support;
- which error keeps returning;
- which question is still unresolved;
- which resource helped;
- which capability should be tested after a delay.
Study History stores those transition facts, not every detail of the subject.

The Danger of Repeated Restarts
Without state continuity, students often restart from the most familiar beginning: reread the chapter, rewatch the video, redo the easy questions, reorganise notes.
Those activities can feel productive because they restore familiarity. But if yesterday’s bottleneck was strategy selection, transfer, explanation or one recurring error, restarting at the beginning may avoid the very thing that needs to return.

Parents Can Use History Without Micromanaging
Parents around the world often face the same problem: the child says they have studied, but no one knows what the next session should build on.
A parent does not need a detailed surveillance log. A one-minute closing conversation can be enough:
- What became easier today?
- What is still uncertain?
- What help did you need?
- What should you test next time before reopening the notes?
Then stop. The point is continuity, not adult ownership of every learning move.
Study History Must Record Support Conditions
“Completed successfully” means something different if the learner used a worked example, teacher hint, calculator, translation tool or generative AI system.
The history should not treat assistance as cheating by default. It should simply preserve the condition:

- Close sessions with a one-minute state receipt.
- Record what changed, not a transcript of everything done.
- Preserve one unresolved question when it matters.
- Record the level of support used.
- Schedule a concrete return condition, not just “revise again.”
- Begin the next session by testing the old state before rereading.
- Delete or retire details that no longer affect the next decision.
- Fade adult prompting as the learner learns to preserve their own study state.
