Wait, What? The Same Symbol Can Mean Different Things in Different Tools

A learner sees a small star beside a study resource. In one app it means “favourite”. In another it means “important”. Elsewhere it opens a rating control. A symbol can look familiar without making the next action clear.

Before activating an icon-only control, identify what the control is called, what object it will affect, and what state it is currently in. Use visible text, an accessible name, tooltip, context or help when available. Then activate once and confirm what changed.

The Owned Interface Job

This page owns how a learner turns an icon-only control into a clear, reversible study action before using it.

It does not own visual-symbol learning, interface design compliance or whether a particular app is educationally effective. It owns action identity, target, state and confirmation from the learner’s side.

Failure Signatures

  • You recognise the picture but cannot state the action it will perform.
  • Several icon buttons look similar.
  • The visible symbol and the name announced by assistive technology appear to disagree.
  • You do not know whether the icon acts on the current paragraph, whole document or account.
  • You activate the same icon repeatedly because the new state is not obvious.
  • A voice-control command cannot reliably target the visible control name.

If one of these is unknown and the action matters, identify it before pressing.

A Simple Discrimination Check

Ask the learner to describe the icon as an action sentence before activation: “This bookmarks the current article.” If they can do that and the result matches, the interface is clear enough to proceed. If the control remains ambiguous, use another visible route or help source rather than guessing.

The Icon-Button Study Protocol

  1. Pause before consequential actions. Do not rely on symbol familiarity alone.
  2. Find the control name. Read adjacent text, accessible name, tooltip or help.
  3. Name the target. Current item, selected text, file, folder, account or something else?
  4. Check state. On/off, expanded/collapsed, saved/unsaved, muted/unmuted.
  5. Activate once.
  6. Confirm the result. Look for a changed label, state, status message or visible effect.
  7. Return to the study object. Record a changed state only when it matters for later resumption.

Examples

E-book: a bookmark icon acts on the current location. The learner confirms it changed to the saved state before closing.

Video study: a gear icon opens settings rather than changing the video itself. The learner identifies the target before looking for captions or playback controls.

Collaborative document: a comment, resolve or reaction icon may affect different objects. The learner checks the selected text/thread before activation.

Resource and Help Rule

If a control has no clear visible label, assistive technologies or platform help may expose its accessible name. If the name is still unclear or the action is difficult to reverse, use a labelled menu command or another route when available.

Finish, Record and Resume

Most icon activations do not need a permanent record. Preserve only state that changes tomorrow’s route: for example, “article bookmarked”, “captions on”, or “comment thread resolved”. The next study action should remain visible.

How Do We Know?

WCAG’s Name, Role, Value guidance requires user-interface components to expose meaningful names and states to assistive technology. W3C also notes that a symbol such as “×” may look visually obvious while still requiring an accessible name such as “Close”, and its Label in Name guidance explains why visible labels and accessible names need to work together for speech input. These sources support the interface principle that an action needs a reliable name and state. They do not say that students must memorise icon vocabularies.

Evidence boundary: clear control naming supports operability. It does not demonstrate comprehension of the study content or justify claims about learner capability.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming every familiar symbol has one universal meaning.
  • Ignoring which object the icon acts on.
  • Pressing repeatedly because the state change is subtle.
  • Trusting a tooltip without checking the resulting state when the action matters.
  • Confusing successful control use with successful studying.

For Parents and Tutors

If a learner hesitates at a symbol, ask: “What will this control do, and what will it act on?” Help locate the label if needed, then let the learner decide whether to activate it.
