The score tells you how the paper ended. The response pattern tells you what to work on next.
A useful practice paper should leave more than a percentage. It should reveal where marks were lost and under which conditions.
Do not ask only “How many marks?” Ask “What kind of marks?”
Look at where time disappeared
Did the learner fail to finish? Was too much time spent on one difficult question? Did accuracy collapse near the end?
Timing problems can require a different repair from content problems.
Look at the first wrong decision
Was the question misread? Was the wrong representation chosen? Did the learner know the concept but select an unsuitable route?
The first wrong decision is often more useful than the final wrong answer.
Look for repeated error families
Three unrelated slips may be noise. Five answers showing the same evidence-selection weakness or reference-quantity error are a stronger pattern.
Look at blanks and abandoned routes
A blank question may mean missing knowledge, poor time allocation, failure to recognise the route or loss of confidence after an earlier problem.
Ask the learner what happened at that moment rather than treating every blank as the same problem.
Look at checking
Which lost marks could a realistic checking routine have caught? Does the learner know what to check, or only reread passively?
Look at recovery
Did one hard item disturb the next several questions? Examination craft includes the ability to contain a failure rather than let it spread across the paper.
Compare prediction with outcome
Before looking at the mark, ask what the learner expected. A large mismatch can reveal overconfidence, underconfidence or a poor model of which parts of the subject are secure.
Turn the paper into a short priority list
The answer is rarely “fix all mistakes”. Group errors by mechanism and choose the few highest-impact changes worth repairing before the next comparable paper.
Turn one paper into a short evidence ledger
Parents do not need to analyse every lost mark. The useful move is to group what happened into a few kinds of evidence so the next teaching priority becomes clearer.

Choose one or two patterns, not every mistake
A paper containing twelve mistakes does not necessarily contain twelve teaching priorities. If six losses share one earlier cause, that one pattern should outrank a scattering of isolated slips. If most marks are being lost late in otherwise-correct routes, reopening the whole topic may be wasteful.
Separate expensive errors from noisy errors
An isolated one-mark slip may deserve a correction but not a programme change. A repeated pattern that affects several questions, blocks later work or persists across papers is more educationally expensive and deserves more weight.
The next-paper test
After the priority is repaired, look for the same family of demand in a later comparable paper. Did the old loss reduce? Did the learner need less support? Did the saved time or marks appear elsewhere? That return is what turns the original paper from a diagnosis into a useful intervention loop.
Keep the score in proportion
A higher score with the same old mechanism still visible may be encouraging but incomplete. A similar score on a harder paper can sometimes contain meaningful improvement. The score remains important; the response trace explains what the number is capable of telling us.
The parent-facing RFE is therefore simple: leave the paper with a shorter, better priority list than the one you started with.
What this page does not mean
The score still matters. Examination performance ultimately has to produce marks. The point is that a score without the response trace is a weak teaching plan.
