A town has a riverside path.
During ordinary weather, people use it to:
walk,
cycle,
exercise,
reach nearby homes,
and shorten their journeys.
During periods of very heavy rain, parts of the path can become covered by water.
Someone proposes:
The path should be closed whenever heavy rain is forecast.
Do you agree?
At Secondary 2, we learned that several interpretations could compete and that evidence had to constrain them.
Secondary 3 changes the task again.
Now you are not merely evaluating somebody else’s interpretation.
You have to construct a position of your own.
And that position must survive contact with another intelligent person who may disagree.
So the new question becomes:
Can I build an argument that remains standing after it is challenged?
Welcome to The Voyage of Water at Secondary 3.
An Opinion Is Not Yet an Argument
Suppose you write:
I strongly believe the path should be closed.
That tells us your position.
It does not yet tell us why another person should accept it.
Add:
because safety is important.
Better.
But still broad.
Now:
The path should be temporarily closed when conditions create a significant risk that users cannot judge water depth or surface hazards safely.
Something has changed.
The position now contains:
- a claim,
- a condition,
- a reason,
- and a boundary.
It is becoming an argument.
The Basic Argument Machine
A useful structure is:

For example:
Claim
The path should close under specified high-risk conditions.
Reason
Users may be unable to see hazards beneath accumulated water.
Evidence
In our constructed scenario, part of the kerb and uneven surface become invisible when water covers the path.
Explanation
This makes ordinary visual judgement less reliable.
Link
Temporary closure therefore reduces exposure to a risk users may not be able to assess accurately themselves.
Now somebody else can inspect the route.
“Because” Does Not Automatically Create a Good Reason
Consider:
We should close the path because closure is safer.
This may simply repeat the claim.
Why is closure safer?
Under what conditions?
Compared with what alternative?
A stronger argument explains the mechanism.

Now the reasoning bridge is visible.
Find the Hidden Assumption
Every argument contains things that are not always stated.
Suppose:
The path should close because water sometimes covers it.
Hidden assumptions may include:
- covering creates meaningful danger,
- users cannot manage that danger sufficiently themselves,
- closure does not impose a greater cost elsewhere,
- another route exists,
- the closure trigger can be identified accurately.
If one assumption fails, the argument may weaken.
Secondary 3 English increasingly asks the learner to see these hidden bridges.
Ask: What Must Be True?
This is one of the most useful questions in argumentative writing.
Suppose someone argues:
Schools should stop selling bottled water because plastic waste is harmful.
Ask:
What must be true for this recommendation to follow?
Perhaps:
- bottled-water sales contribute materially to the waste problem,
- practical alternatives exist,
- those alternatives do not create larger problems,
- students can still access drinking water reliably.
The argument is not only the sentence we can see.
It rests on an underlying support structure.
Evidence Must Match the Claim
Imagine this constructed evidence:
Ten students said they preferred refillable bottles.
Can we conclude:
All teenagers want bottled water removed?
No.
The evidence is too narrow for the claim.
Perhaps we can say:
In this small group, most surveyed students preferred refillable bottles.
The language has moved closer to what the evidence can actually carry.
Claim Size Matters
Think of an argument as a bridge.
A small piece of evidence might support:
Some users found the path inconvenient.
It may not support:
The path is an unacceptable public disaster.
The larger the claim, the more support it requires.

Do not make the conclusion wider than the evidence base without justification.
One Example Is Not a Universal Law
Suppose one neighbourhood floods after leaves block a drain.
Can we conclude:
All urban flooding is caused by blocked drains?
No.
The case may show:
blocked drainage can contribute under some conditions.
The distinction is crucial.
Secondary 3 argument depends heavily on words such as:

many

versus:

Small words control the scope of a claim.
Strong Language Requires Strong Support
Compare:
Temporary closure may reduce risk.
Temporary closure will reduce risk.
Temporary closure eliminates risk.
Those are not equivalent.
The third is extremely strong.
Perhaps another route has different risks.
Perhaps people ignore barriers.
Perhaps the closure creates congestion elsewhere.
Argumentative English needs calibrated certainty.
Evidence Can Be True Yet Irrelevant
Suppose someone argues:
The riverside path should close during severe weather because Singapore has many excellent restaurants.
The statement about restaurants could be true.
It still does not support the conclusion.
Truth and relevance are separate.
Ask:
Does this information move the argument towards the claim?
If not, it may be noise.
Relevance Is Relational
A fact is not simply “relevant” in isolation.
It is relevant to a question.
For:
Should the path close?
useful information may involve:
- frequency of unsafe conditions,
- consequences for users,
- reliability of alternative routes,
- effectiveness of warnings,
- cost of closure,
- possible infrastructure solutions.
Another fact may be interesting but do no argumentative work.
Source Quality Also Depends on the Claim
Suppose we want to know:
How inconvenient is the detour?
Regular path users may be useful sources.
If we want:
What physical condition causes water to accumulate?
An engineer, maintenance record or appropriate investigation may be more useful.
If we ask:
What happened at 3.20 p.m.?
A time-stamped observation may matter.
There is no magical source that is best for every claim.
Ask:
How does this source know this particular thing?
Authority Has a Boundary
Imagine:
A famous actor says the drainage design is technically inadequate.
Fame does not establish engineering expertise.
Now imagine:
An engineer says every resident is happy with the new route.
Engineering expertise does not automatically provide access to every resident’s feelings.
Credentials can matter.
But expertise is domain-specific.
Numbers Can Strengthen an Argument
Suppose we write:
The alternative route is much longer.
Now add fictional measurements for our constructed exercise:
Original route:
800 metres.
Alternative route:
1.1 kilometres.
The difference is:
300 metres.
Now “much longer” can be examined.
Is 300 metres significant?
That may depend on:
- the user,
- weather,
- mobility,
- frequency,
- purpose.
Numbers can make the factual layer more precise.
They do not automatically settle the value judgement.
Data Still Needs Interpretation
Suppose:
Closure adds three minutes to the average journey.
One writer says:
The inconvenience is minimal.
Another says:
Three minutes repeated twice daily across hundreds of users creates a meaningful cumulative burden.
Same number.
Different argument.
The argument needs reasoning about why the number matters.
Data does not speak without interpretation.
Percentages Need Denominators
Imagine a headline:
Complaints increased by 100%.
That sounds enormous.
Suppose complaints increased:
from 1 to 2.
Still 100%.
Now suppose:
from 500 to 1,000.
Also 100%.
Same percentage.
Very different underlying scale.
Secondary English should increasingly ask quantitative questions when language is built around numbers.
Words Can Hide the Denominator
Most residents support the proposal.
How many residents were asked?
How were they selected?
How many responded?
What counted as support?
The sentence may be accurate.
But the reader needs context to understand its evidential strength.
Critical reading is not rejecting statistics.
It is learning what additional information makes them interpretable.
Correlation Is Not Automatically Cause
Suppose:
Water levels fell after maintenance workers arrived.
Can we conclude:
The workers caused the fall?
Perhaps.
But perhaps the rain also stopped.
Perhaps the tide changed.
Perhaps another process mattered.
The word:
after
does not automatically justify:
because.
A strong argument distinguishes sequence from causal proof.
Causal Claims Need a Mechanism
If we argue:
Clearing the obstruction reduced water accumulation,
a good explanation might establish:
- the obstruction impeded drainage,
- it was removed,
- drainage increased,
- other plausible factors were considered.
The argument becomes stronger when a mechanism connects cause and effect.
Beware the Single-Cause Story
Complex outcomes often have several contributors.
Imagine a constructed flooding event involving:
- exceptionally heavy rain,
- an obstructed drain,
- low ground,
- peak pedestrian use.
A weak argument might insist:
The drain caused everything.
A stronger position may say:
The obstruction appears to have contributed, but the event should be understood as the interaction of drainage condition and rainfall intensity.
Nuance can increase explanatory strength.
“Both Sides” Is Not Yet Evaluation
A student might write:
There are advantages and disadvantages.
True.
But Secondary 3 should go further.
Which advantages?
Which disadvantages?
How large are they?
Who experiences them?
Under what conditions?
Can any be reduced?
Which should carry greater weight?
Evaluation requires comparison.
Build a Trade-Off
Suppose the path remains open.
Benefit:
shorter travel.
Cost:
exposure to uncertain surface conditions during high water.
Suppose it closes.
Benefit:
reduced exposure.
Cost:
longer travel.
Now ask:
Can the problem be redesigned so we do not choose between two extremes?
Perhaps:
- conditional closure,
- warning thresholds,
- improved drainage,
- better lighting,
- temporary barriers,
- alternative routing.
Argument becomes more sophisticated when we search beyond:
A or B.
Beware the False Choice
Someone says:
Either we keep the path open and value freedom, or we close it and become obsessed with safety.
Those are not necessarily the only possibilities.
There may be intermediate policies.
This is a false dichotomy when a wider option field exists.
A good counterargument can expose the missing possibilities.
Add Conditions to Improve the Claim
Instead of:
Close the path whenever it rains.
Try:
Close the affected section temporarily when observable conditions exceed a defined safety threshold.
Now the proposal is more targeted.
The learner has not weakened the position.
The learner has improved its fit to the problem.
Strong Arguments Often Become More Conditional
Early argument:
Ban it.
More mature argument:
Restrict it under these conditions because these consequences outweigh these costs, while preserving it elsewhere.
Reality frequently resists absolute rules.
Conditions allow an argument to retain structure without pretending every case is identical.
Now Meet the Counterargument
Suppose your position is:
Close the riverside path during dangerous conditions.
A counterargument:
Closure may disproportionately affect people who depend on the route for the shortest access to public transport.
This is a real challenge.
Do not reply:
They should just walk farther.
That ignores the cost.
A stronger argument acknowledges it.
Steelman Before You Respond
Represent the opposing position strongly.
Regular users may reasonably object that repeated closure creates additional travel time and may particularly burden those with mobility constraints or tightly timed journeys.
Now respond:
That cost matters, which is why automatic closure for every rainfall event would be excessive. A threshold-based closure combined with an accessible alternative route could preserve most normal access while responding to genuinely unsafe conditions.
The argument improved because the counterargument was allowed to be strong.
Counterarguments Are Stress Tests
Think:
MY POSITION↓STRONG OBJECTION↓DOES IT BREAK? ↙ ↘ YES NO ↓ ↓REVISE STRENGTHEN
A counterargument is not an annoying paragraph required by an essay format.
It is a test of the architecture.
Sometimes the Opponent Is Right
Suppose your initial proposal is:
Close the path for 24 hours after every heavy shower.
The counterargument demonstrates that most water clears within a much shorter period and that closure imposes unnecessary cost.
Then revise.
Perhaps:
Closure should depend on observed conditions rather than a fixed 24-hour rule.
Changing your claim after challenge is not losing.
It is improvement.
Argument Is Not War
Good argument does not require:
humiliating opponents,
maximising rhetorical aggression,
or defending your first position at all costs.
The purpose is to test:
claims,
evidence,
assumptions,
trade-offs,
and consequences.
A conversation can end with:
Your objection changes part of my position.
That can be the intellectually strongest outcome.
The Best Position May Be a Synthesis
Position A:
Always close.
Position B:
Never close.
After evaluation:
Keep the path open under normal conditions, introduce objective closure triggers when visibility or water depth creates defined hazards, and improve the alternative route so closure does not unfairly transfer the burden.
This is not merely “meeting in the middle”.
It is constructing a third position from the strongest constraints revealed by both sides.
Compromise and Synthesis Are Different
Compromise:
You want 100. I want 0. Let us choose 50.
Synthesis:
What is each side actually protecting, and can a new design preserve more of both?
The second requires structural understanding.
That is a powerful argumentative move.
Ask Who Pays
Suppose a policy creates a large public benefit.
But the cost falls almost entirely on a small group.
Should that matter?
Yes.
Argumentative evaluation can ask:
- who benefits?
- who pays?
- who decides?
- who is exposed to risk?
- who has alternatives?
- who does not?
A proposal’s average benefit can conceal unequal consequences.
Average Outcome Is Not Every Outcome
Imagine a route change adds:
three minutes on average.
For most people:
minor inconvenience.
For someone using a wheelchair:
perhaps the alternative route adds much more difficulty.
The average may remain accurate.
The distribution reveals another part of the problem.
Good argument rotates the receiver.
Include the Future Receiver
Suppose a cheap drainage solution works now but creates higher maintenance problems later.
Who pays then?
Future users.
Argument can include consequences beyond the immediate moment.
Ask:
What happens next?
and:
Who receives that consequence?
A decision does not stop existing after the essay ends.
Efficiency Is Not the Only Value
Suppose the cheapest solution:
works fastest.
Does that automatically make it best?
Perhaps not.
Other values might include:
- safety,
- accessibility,
- fairness,
- environmental impact,
- durability,
- public trust.
An argument can fail by optimising one quantity while ignoring protected values.
“It Works” and “We Should Do It” Are Different Claims
This is a crucial distinction.
Suppose a system could prevent people from entering a riverside area by permanently fencing it off.
Would that reduce access-related incidents?
Probably.
Does that automatically prove permanent fencing is the best policy?
No.
Effectiveness answers:
Does it achieve this outcome?
Evaluation asks:
Should we choose it, given all relevant consequences and values?
Secondary 3 English increasingly enters that second question.
Argument Has an Ethical Gate
Before recommending an action, ask:
Who benefits?
Who loses?
What rights or values are affected?
Are there less harmful alternatives?
Is the action proportionate to the problem?
Reasoning that is technically effective can still be ethically poor.
English provides a language for making those trade-offs visible.
Loaded Language Can Replace Reasoning
Consider:
Reckless officials continue to endanger innocent pedestrians by refusing to close the disastrous path.
Powerful language.
But what has actually been established?
Perhaps very little.
Loaded wording can create an emotional conclusion before evidence has done the work.
Strip it back:
Officials have kept the path open under the current operating policy despite periodic water accumulation.
Now investigate.
Emotion may return later.
But evidence gets a chance first.
Emotional Language Is Not Always Wrong
If real harm occurred, emotional language may be justified.
The question is:
Does the intensity of the language match the evidence and purpose?
A personal reflection may legitimately contain stronger emotional expression.
A factual analytical passage may require more restraint.
Register follows purpose.
Rhetorical Questions Can Hide Missing Evidence
How many more people must suffer before something is done?
This sounds forceful.
But how many people have suffered?
What happened?
What intervention is proposed?
A rhetorical question can increase emotional pressure without supplying factual support.
Use rhetoric to strengthen an argument whose structure already exists.
Do not use it instead of structure.
Anecdotes Are Powerful and Limited
A resident says:
“I slipped on that path last year.”
That story matters.
It provides direct human experience.
But can one experience establish the risk level for every user in every condition?
No.
Anecdotes can reveal consequences vividly.
Broader claims need broader support.
Data Can Also Be Humanly Incomplete
The reverse problem exists too.
A table might show:
only 1% of users experienced a problem.
But if the consequence for that 1% is severe, the percentage alone may not settle the decision.
Quantitative frequency and qualitative severity are different dimensions.
Strong evaluation may need both.
Evidence Types Can Complement One Another
A robust argument may combine:
measurement — how often something happens.
testimony — how it affects people.
expert explanation — why it happens.
comparison — what alternatives achieve.
historical pattern — whether it persists.
Different evidence answers different questions.
Do not force one evidence type to perform every job.
Build an Evidence Network
Instead of:

The position becomes harder to overturn because different sources support different parts of its architecture.
But More Sources Do Not Automatically Mean Better Evidence
Ten weak sources do not necessarily defeat one highly relevant strong source.
Do not count evidence.
Evaluate it.
Ask:
Is it relevant?
Is it credible for this claim?
Is it sufficiently representative?
Does it directly test the competing explanation?
Does another source independently support it?
Quality matters.
Agreement Can Be Duplicated
Suppose ten websites repeat the same claim.
But all ten copied one original article.
Do we actually have ten independent confirmations?
No.
The information may have one upstream source.
Argumentative research needs some awareness of provenance:

Follow the Claim Backwards
A useful research habit:
Who said this first?
What was the original evidence?
Has the wording changed?
Was an uncertainty removed during summarisation?
Sometimes:

causes.
Then:
definitely causes.
The claim becomes stronger as it travels even though the evidence has not changed.
Compression Can Distort Argument
Original:
Under the tested conditions, the intervention reduced average water accumulation, although the results varied across sites.
Summary:
Intervention reduces flooding.
Headline:
Solution Stops Floods.
Each layer becomes simpler.
And more certain.
A strong Secondary learner notices what disappeared during compression.
Write the Most Defensible Sentence
Instead of maximising drama, try to write a sentence that can survive checking.
Perhaps:
The available evidence suggests that the intervention can reduce water accumulation under some conditions, but its effectiveness appears to vary across locations.
Less spectacular.
More robust.
Argumentative maturity often produces more careful language.
Structure the Whole Essay as a Reasoning Route
A useful architecture:

But do not treat this as a compulsory template.
The deeper principle is:
Each section should perform a necessary job in moving the reader towards the judgement.
A Paragraph Is a Local Argument
A strong body paragraph often contains:
point
→ evidence/example
→ explanation
→ implication
→ link to position
For example:
Temporary closure may be justified when accumulated water conceals surface hazards. In the constructed scenario, the kerb disappears beneath the water, preventing pedestrians from judging the edge accurately. This reduces the information available to users before they step forward. Where such uncertainty reaches a meaningful safety threshold, temporary restriction is therefore more defensible than relying solely on individual judgement.
The paragraph moves.
It does not merely list.
Topic Sentences Should Make Claims
Weak:
Another point is safety.
Better:
Temporary closure becomes more defensible when water prevents users from assessing hazards reliably.
The second sentence has argumentative direction.
The paragraph already knows what it is trying to establish.
Evidence Should Not Be Dropped Into the Paragraph
Weak:
Safety is important. “The kerb could not be seen.” Therefore, we should close it.
The quotation is present.
But the reasoning remains thin.
Ask:
Why does an invisible kerb matter?
Then explain.
Evidence becomes useful when integrated into a causal or logical route.
Conclusion Is Not Copy-and-Paste
A weak conclusion repeats the introduction.
A stronger conclusion returns after the argument has changed the field.
Perhaps your opening claim was:
Close the path during heavy rain.
After analysis, your final judgement becomes:
A blanket closure for every heavy-rain forecast would impose unnecessary costs, but temporary closure is justified when observable conditions reduce users’ ability to assess hazards reliably, provided an accessible alternative route is maintained.
The conclusion is more precise because the argument did work.
Qualification Is Evidence of Thought
Words such as:
unless
provided that
where
when
to the extent that
in cases where
allow a writer to express boundaries.
They are not signs of weakness.
They often indicate that the learner has discovered where a claim works and where it does not.
Write for an Intelligent Opponent
Assume the reader:
- understands the issue,
- can detect weak logic,
- knows plausible alternatives,
- and may disagree.
That changes your writing.
You cannot rely on:
Obviously…
Everyone knows…
No sensible person could disagree…
You must build the route.
“Obviously” Is Often a Warning
If something is truly obvious, you may not need the word.
If it is contested, the word does not resolve the dispute.
Replace:
Obviously, bottled water should be banned.
with:
Restricting bottled-water sales may be justified where reliable refill infrastructure is already available and single-use packaging represents a significant avoidable waste source.
Now we have something to evaluate.
Argument Can Change by Audience
Suppose you are writing to:
Students
Emphasise convenience and daily use.
School leaders
Include implementation, cost and safety.
Parents
Address reliability and student welfare.
Environmental group
Discuss waste and resource consequences.
The underlying evidence may remain similar.
The order and explanation can change.
Argument is communication towards a receiver.
Persuasion Does Not Require Manipulation
There is a difference between:
helping a reader see strong reasons
and:
hiding information that would weaken your case.
A robust argument can disclose a real limitation.
For example:
Refill stations require maintenance and initial investment; however, where those systems are reliable, they may reduce dependence on disposable packaging.
Acknowledging reality can increase trust.
Do Not Hide the Cost of Your Own Position
Every serious proposal usually has costs.
If your essay pretends otherwise, the opposing reader will find them for you.
Better:
The alternative route is longer, and this cost should not be dismissed.
Then explain why your position survives—or modify it.
The strongest argument can often state its own weakness accurately.
A Good Counterargument Improves the Final Position
This is the Sec 3 shift.
At Sec 2:
competing interpretations tested our reading.
At Sec 3:
competing arguments test our position.

Argumentative Writing Is Decision Architecture
A strong essay helps the reader see:
- the state of the problem,
- the available options,

That is much more than:
introduction, three body paragraphs, conclusion.
The essay builds a route through a decision.
One Water Decision, Many Stakeholders
Suppose a reservoir-side development is proposed.
Possible receivers include:
- nearby residents,
- recreational users,
- businesses,
- environmental researchers,
- planners,
- future residents.
A good argumentative piece may need to rotate through several.
Not because every opinion deserves equal weight.
Because each may reveal a different consequence.
Stakeholders Do Not Automatically Determine Truth
A business may benefit financially.
That interest matters when interpreting its position.
But it does not automatically make every factual claim false.
An environmental group may strongly oppose development.
That does not automatically make every claim true either.
Interests are one part of source analysis.
Evidence still matters.
Values Can Explain Persistent Disagreement
Two people may agree on:
the cost,
the expected usage,
the environmental impact,
and the travel time.
Yet disagree.
Why?
One values economic opportunity more heavily.
Another gives greater weight to ecological preservation.
At this point the disagreement is not purely factual.
The essay should identify that.
Do Not Pretend Value Questions Are Scientific Measurements
Science may help estimate environmental effects.
Mathematics may quantify cost.
But neither automatically tells us:
exactly how society should rank competing values.
Argumentative English provides a language for examining the judgement.
Different disciplines contribute different parts of the decision.
Read Water Another Way

Can I construct a position that survives evidence, alternatives, counterargument and trade-offs?

At Secondary 3, choice becomes central in both subjects.
English chooses among:
positions and reasons.

Different objects.

That is an argumentative field.

We did not begin:

That is a crucial Secondary 3 habit.
Before defending a position, first determine:
What exactly is being proposed?
Ambiguous propositions produce vague essays.
Define Before You Defend
Consider:
Technology is harmful.
What counts as technology?
What kind of harm?
To whom?
Under what conditions?
Compared with what alternative?
