The One-Sentence Answer
Secondary 3 English becomes stronger when students learn to distinguish a claim from evidence, explain how the evidence supports the claim, recognise competing positions and calibrate how certain their judgement should be.
Why Secondary 3 Feels Different
Lower Secondary English builds reading, inference, vocabulary, paragraph development and viewpoint awareness. Secondary 3 begins asking those capabilities to work together more deliberately.
The student may need to:
- interpret a more complex text;
- identify the writer’s position;
- distinguish evidence from assertion;
- compare viewpoints;
- select a position;
- support that position;
- respond to an opposing view;
- write with a clear audience and purpose;
- do all of this with greater independence.
This is why a method built mainly around grammar exercises, memorised phrases and keyword comprehension can begin to expire. The language system now has to support reasoning.
Opinion Is the Beginning, Not the End
Consider the statement:
Social media is harmful.
That is a position. It is not yet an argument.
To become an argument, the student has to answer questions such as:
- Harmful in what way?
- To whom?
- Under what conditions?
- Compared with what?
- What evidence supports the claim?
- What evidence might weaken it?
- Does the claim apply always or only sometimes?
This is the move from reaction to reasoning.
Claim, Evidence and Explanation Are Different Jobs
Students often confuse these three.

A paragraph can contain all three and still be weak if the connection is not visible.
For example:
Public transport is important because many people use it.
This contains a claim and a reason, but the reasoning remains shallow. Why does usage make it important? What consequences follow? Who benefits? What would happen without it?
The student needs to make the bridge explicit.
Evidence Is Not Decoration
Students sometimes include an example because they know examples are expected. The example appears, but the paragraph does not become stronger.
Evidence has to perform work.
- Does it prove the specific claim?
- Is it relevant enough?
- Is it strong enough?
- Does it need explanation?
- Could another interpretation fit the same evidence?
This applies to comprehension too. Quoting a relevant line is not enough if the answer never explains what the line shows.
From Evidence Selection to Evidence Quality
Secondary 3 students increasingly need to distinguish between some evidence and the strongest available evidence.
Suppose a passage describes a character as:
- checking the clock repeatedly;
- rearranging papers;
- asking whether anyone had called;
- walking to the window each time a car stopped outside.
All four details may support the inference that the character is waiting anxiously. But one question may require the strongest evidence for anxiety, while another may ask what the character expects to happen.
Evidence selection therefore depends on the exact question, not only the passage.
The Counterargument Upgrade
One of the most important Upper Secondary developments is the ability to represent a position the student does not personally hold.
This does not mean the student becomes uncertain about everything. It means the student can model another viewpoint accurately enough to respond to it.
For example:
Schools should reduce homework.
A strong student should be able to ask:
- Why might teachers disagree?
- What purposes can homework serve?
- Does the answer depend on age, subject or amount?
- Could too little homework create another problem?
This makes the final judgement more credible because the student has considered what a reasonable opponent might say.
Qualification: Strong Arguments Are Often Less Absolute
Secondary 3 students often believe stronger writing means stronger certainty.
But compare:
- Technology always improves education.
- Technology can improve education when it supports clear teaching goals and is used appropriately.
The second statement is less absolute but more defensible.
Useful language includes:
- can;
- may;
- often;
- under certain conditions;
- to a significant extent;
- although;
- while this is true in some cases.
Language is helping the student calibrate the claim to the evidence.
Comprehension: Evidence Has to Stay Attached to Meaning
The same evidence discipline matters in comprehension.
A student may produce a reasonable interpretation but fail to show why the text supports it. Or the student may quote a line without explaining the relevance.
We teach a simple chain:
Question → Interpretation → Evidence → Explanation → Check
The answer should remain connected to the text at every step.
Writing: Paragraphs Need a Reasoning Route
Secondary 3 paragraphs should increasingly show deliberate internal architecture.
A useful starting structure is:
Point → Reason → Evidence or example → Explanation → Implication → Link
This is not a rigid formula. It is a way to make the job of each sentence visible.
Once the student understands the jobs, the structure can vary. A strong writer does not need every paragraph to look identical. But every paragraph should earn its place.
When Vocabulary Tries to Replace Reasoning
Secondary 3 students sometimes respond to harder writing by adding more elaborate vocabulary.
But language cannot rescue an empty idea.
Consider:
It is unequivocally imperative that society recognises the multifaceted ramifications of technology.
The sentence sounds formal, but it still does not tell the reader what the writer actually thinks.
We prefer:
Clear thought first. Precise language second.
Vocabulary should increase the resolution of the argument, not hide uncertainty.
Grammar Still Matters—But It Now Carries More
As argument becomes more complex, grammar has to carry relationships such as contrast, concession, cause, condition and qualification.
Students need control over structures such as:
- although;
- while;
- because;
- therefore;
- if;
- unless;
- despite;
- even though;
- not only…but also.
The grammar is not decorative. It represents logical relationships.
Oral English: Argument in Real Time
Oral discussion is a powerful way to build argumentative control because the student has to respond without unlimited editing time.
We may ask a student to move through:
Position → Reason → Example → Challenge → Response → Qualification
The challenge is important. It teaches students that a position can be tested without collapsing.
This builds a more flexible form of confidence: not “I am right because I said it,” but “I can explain why I think this and respond when another person disagrees.”

The same final writing score can emerge from any of these. That is why diagnosis comes before volume.
Why Secondary 3 Is the Right Time to Build Argument
Secondary 4 is closer to examination pressure. More school assessments compete for attention. Students have less time to rebuild basic reasoning architecture slowly.
Secondary 3 gives us a better window to develop:
- claim discipline;
- evidence selection;
- explanation;
- counterargument;
- qualification;
- paragraph sequencing;
- audience and purpose;
- independent checking.
The student can still learn deliberately before every task is judged mainly by final examination conversion.
Why Small Groups of Three Help With Argument
Argument improves when another mind exists.
A student can state a position alone. In a small group, another student can ask, “Why?” or provide a counterexample. The tutor can then make the reasoning visible.
Three students may produce three different positions. That allows us to compare:
- which claim is clearer;
- which evidence is stronger;
- which example actually proves something;
- which counterargument is reasonable;
- which conclusion is too certain.
The group gives argument a real receiver rather than turning it into a formula written only for the marker.
From Learning to Examination Readiness
Secondary 3 should gradually move from open learning towards more independent execution.
Understand → Practise → Explain → Transfer → Time → Perform → Review
Practice papers become useful when they test whether the student can select the right reasoning route without being told which technique to use.
If argument collapses under time, we need to know why. Was the question misread? Was the plan too slow? Did evidence take too long to retrieve? Did the student spend too much time making language elaborate?
The paper becomes evidence about performance rather than merely another score.

Workshop Chapter 01
The Upper-Secondary Reset: an answer now has to survive questions
Secondary 3 often exposes a difference that was easier to hide earlier: a student may know many facts, understand a passage broadly and still struggle to produce a defensible answer. The difficulty is not always lack of content. It may be the inability to decide which content matters, what conclusion it supports and how strongly that conclusion can be stated.
Imagine a class discussing whether schools should allow students to use artificial-intelligence tools for homework. One student says, “AI is useful because it gives answers quickly.” Another says, “AI is bad because students become lazy.” Both statements contain positions. Neither has yet become a strong argument because the mechanism, conditions and evidence remain unclear.
A stronger first response might be: “AI tools can help with homework when they are used to generate explanations or feedback that the student then checks, but using them to submit work the student cannot reproduce independently may weaken learning.” This answer is longer not because length itself is valuable, but because it introduces a condition and distinguishes two uses that should not be treated as identical.
Argument is a structure of relationships
A useful argument contains relationships that another reader can inspect. The claim says what should be accepted. Evidence gives a reason to accept it. Explanation connects the evidence to the claim. Qualification states the limits of the claim. Counterargument shows what a reasonable alternative view might be. Judgement decides how the competing considerations should finally be weighed.
These parts do not need to appear in one fixed order in every paragraph. The point is functional rather than formulaic. If a student cannot explain what a sentence is doing, the paragraph often becomes repetitive. The same idea is stated again with a different connector and gives the appearance of development without actually advancing the reasoning.
At Secondary 3, we therefore ask five questions after drafting: What am I claiming? What evidence supports it? Why does that evidence matter? What would weaken or limit the claim? What should the reader conclude after considering both sides?
The first diagnostic: can the student survive “Why?”
Take a simple claim: “School uniforms are useful.” Ask “Why?” If the student replies, “Because they are good,” the answer has merely repeated the judgement. Ask again: “What problem do uniforms solve?” A more useful answer might be that they make clothing expectations clear and reduce daily variation in what students are expected to wear. Now ask: “Does that prove uniforms are always beneficial?” The student should be able to see that the evidence supports a narrower claim about practical consistency, not every possible claim about school culture.
This sequence reveals whether the student can move from a label to a mechanism. Words such as good, bad, important and effective often conceal the point at which reasoning has stopped. They are not forbidden words. They simply require an explanation of what makes the thing good, bad, important or effective in the context being discussed.
“Homework is useless” creates a much larger burden of proof than “Routine homework can become less useful when it repeats material a student has already mastered without feedback or a new challenge.” The second claim can still be challenged, but it identifies the conditions under which the criticism applies.
Students sometimes fear that qualification makes writing weak. In fact, qualification often makes an argument more credible because it shows that the writer understands the limits of the evidence. A sentence such as “This may help some students when…” can be stronger than “This always works” when the writer cannot justify universality.
Workshop Chapter 02
Evidence has to answer the exact claim
A piece of evidence can be true and still be weak support for a particular claim. This is one of the most important distinctions in upper-secondary reading and writing. Students often select information because it is related to the topic, not because it actually helps establish the conclusion.
Suppose the claim is: “Later library opening hours would help students who finish co-curricular activities late.” Consider four pieces of fictional evidence: the library has new chairs; many students say they enjoy reading; several students report that their activities end after the library closes; the librarian prefers morning shifts. Only the third directly supports the claim about access after co-curricular activities. The other facts may matter to another decision, but they do not perform the required evidential job here.
Relevance comes before impressiveness
A statistic does not become strong evidence merely because it contains a percentage. A personal story does not become weak evidence merely because it concerns one person. The value depends on the claim and what the information can reasonably establish.
If the claim is “Many students in this class found the new timetable confusing,” then a survey of that class may be relevant. If the claim is “All teenagers learn better under later timetables,” the same small survey cannot carry the larger conclusion. The student must match the scope of the evidence to the scope of the claim.
Evidence quality has several dimensions: relevance, sufficiency, reliability and representativeness. Relevance asks whether the evidence addresses the claim. Sufficiency asks whether there is enough to justify the strength of the conclusion. Reliability asks whether the source and method are dependable enough for the use being made of them. Representativeness asks whether the evidence reflects the group or situation the writer is claiming about.
These questions are not invitations to distrust everything. Their purpose is calibration. A school survey can be useful for understanding one school’s students without proving what every student in Singapore thinks. A personal example can illustrate a mechanism without establishing frequency across a population.
Try an evidence-ranking task
Claim: “The school should provide a sheltered waiting area near the pickup point because students are sometimes exposed to heavy rain while waiting for transport.” Strong evidence would include direct observation of crowding during rain or reports from students who use the pickup point. An environmental award or the size of parents’ vehicles may be true facts but do not directly establish the stated need. The exercise is to separate topical relevance from claim relevance.
The same discipline applies in comprehension. If a passage shows a character checking the door twice, silencing a phone and moving a chair away from a window before a meeting, an inference about anxiety or concern about interruption should be tied to that pattern. The student should not invent a specific threat that the passage never mentions.
Workshop Chapter 03
Explanation is the bridge between evidence and claim
Many weak paragraphs contain a claim and an example but leave the connection unstated. The reader is expected to infer why the example matters. In formal writing, the writer should make that relationship visible.
Consider: “Schools should provide more quiet study areas. For example, some students live in busy households.” The example is relevant, but the reasoning is incomplete. The missing bridge is that a quiet school space may provide an environment unavailable at home, giving those students a better opportunity for sustained concentration.
Now the paragraph contains a mechanism. The proposed resource is connected to a difficulty it can plausibly address. The claim can still be questioned—perhaps the space is underused or staffing is difficult—but the argument has become inspectable.
Use the “so what?” test
After an example, ask “So what?” not as a criticism but as a prompt for explanation. A statistic says that attendance fell. So what does that show? A character tears up a note. So what does that suggest? A policy costs more money. So what consequence follows for feasibility?
The response should not merely restate the evidence. “Attendance fell, showing that fewer people attended” changes almost nothing. Better explanation identifies why the change matters to the claim being made: perhaps a programme intended to increase participation is not yet achieving its stated goal.
Explanation can also identify limits. “The shorter queue suggests the new process reduced waiting at that stage, although it does not by itself show whether total service time improved.” This is stronger than a grand claim because it says both what the evidence supports and what remains unknown.
Weak paragraph: “Group projects are beneficial. Students can divide the work. For example, one student can research and another can design the slides. Therefore group projects are beneficial.” Better reasoning: “Group projects can be useful when a task genuinely requires different forms of contribution. Dividing research, design and presentation work can allow students to combine strengths while still producing one shared outcome. However, this benefit depends on the group coordinating its parts; division of labour alone does not guarantee collaboration.”
The repair changes more than vocabulary. It narrows the claim, explains why division can help and introduces a condition that prevents the argument from becoming naive.
Workshop Chapter 04
Paragraphs need movement, not repeated certainty
A paragraph should change the reader’s understanding. If the first and last sentence make the same claim and everything between them merely repeats the topic, the paragraph has occupied space without advancing the argument.
A useful progression is claim, reason, evidence or example, explanation, implication and link. The exact order can vary, but the internal movement matters. Each sentence should either deepen, support, qualify or connect the idea.
Take the claim: “Schools should teach students how to verify online claims.” A second sentence might explain why: students encounter persuasive material outside lessons and need a way to evaluate it. A third might give a realistic example: a viral post cites a dramatic statistic without linking to the original source. A fourth explains the consequence: without verification habits, the student may repeat a claim whose evidence cannot be checked. A fifth qualifies the solution: verification does not make every disputed question easy, but it improves the quality of the evidence students bring to discussion.
The paragraph does not need seven sophisticated connectors. The movement comes from thought. Connectors help the reader follow a relationship that already exists; they do not create that relationship by themselves.
When paragraph structure becomes a cage
Students sometimes memorise one sequence so rigidly that they insert an example before they have a reason, or add a “link” sentence that simply repeats the topic. A better question is: what does the reader still need? If the claim is controversial, the reader may need a reason immediately. If the reason is abstract, an example may help. If the example has limits, qualification may be essential.
Before drafting, write a six-word job for each body paragraph: “access for late activity students,” “staffing and security cost,” “digital alternative and its limits.” If two paragraphs have the same job, combine or distinguish them. The outline should show movement before the prose begins.
Workshop Chapter 05
Counterargument begins with fair representation
A counterargument is useful only if it represents a position a reasonable opponent might actually hold. Inventing a weak version of the other side makes rebuttal easy but the judgement less credible.
Suppose the question is whether schools should reduce homework. A weak counterargument says, “Some people think students should have homework all night because they dislike free time.” This is easy to reject because it is not a serious account of the opposing view. A fairer version is that homework can provide retrieval practice, reveal misunderstandings and extend learning beyond limited lesson time when the task is well chosen.
To represent an opposing view fairly, state a strong, plausible version of it before responding. Students do not have to agree with the view. They need to understand it well enough that their final judgement survives contact with the best opposing reason, not the weakest.
If arguing for less homework, a student might acknowledge that carefully designed homework can strengthen retrieval and expose gaps. The response can then argue that the issue is not homework versus no homework, but whether quantity and design produce useful practice rather than repetitive workload. The counterargument has forced a better distinction.
- Concede: accept that the opposing point is valid in some cases.
- Limit: show that the point applies only under particular conditions.
- Weigh: accept the point but argue that another consideration matters more.
- Reframe: show that both sides are addressing a deeper question that should be decided differently.
These responses create more mature writing than automatically beginning with “However, this is wrong.” Sometimes the strongest judgement includes part of the opposing view.
Workshop Chapter 06
Qualification is precision, not hesitation
Strong students sometimes overstate because they believe certainty sounds more intelligent. In reality, mature argument often depends on limiting a claim to the conditions the evidence can support. Words such as may, often, in some cases, when and to an extent are not signs of weak thinking when they are used accurately.
Compare “Technology improves education” with “Technology can improve education when it reduces friction in a useful learning task or provides feedback that the learner can act on.” The second claim is narrower, but it gives the reader a clearer test. It also leaves room to discuss situations in which the same technology distracts, overwhelms or replaces necessary thinking.
Qualification becomes especially important when evidence is limited. If ten students in one class prefer digital notes, the responsible claim is about those respondents. The writer can suggest a possibility for broader investigation, but should not leap directly to a universal conclusion about all students.
A scale of certainty
- Establishes: use when the evidence directly supports the conclusion.
- Strongly suggests: use when the pattern is persuasive but not definitive.
- Suggests: use when the evidence supports a plausible interpretation.
- May indicate: use when the evidence is limited or alternative explanations remain substantial.
The choice should follow the evidence, not the student’s desire to sound cautious or bold. A claim can be too weak as well as too strong. If a passage explicitly states that a committee cancelled an event because the venue closed, writing that the closure “may have influenced” the decision is unnecessarily timid.
Qualification practice
Original claim: “Group study always helps students learn.” Improved versions might distinguish the task: “Group study can help when students have to explain reasoning, compare approaches or challenge errors; it may be less useful when each learner needs quiet retrieval practice.” The revision does not avoid judgement. It makes the judgement conditional on the type of learning work.
Workshop Chapter 07
Read arguments by separating claim, reason, evidence and assumption
Upper-secondary reading requires more than identifying what a writer says. The student increasingly needs to identify how the writer gets from one statement to another. That means spotting the assumptions between explicit sentences.
Consider this fictional paragraph: “The school canteen should stop selling bottled drinks because many bottles are thrown away after one use. A refill station would therefore be better.” The explicit reason concerns waste. The conclusion recommends a refill station. Between them sits an assumption: students will actually use refillable containers and the station will reduce single-use waste enough to justify the change.
A student who sees that assumption can evaluate the argument more intelligently. Useful questions include: Is the refill station accessible? What happens to students who forget bottles? How much waste comes from drinks compared with other packaging? The reader is not being difficult for the sake of it. The reader is checking whether the proposed solution addresses the stated problem.
A four-part reading map

This map is particularly useful when reading opinion pieces, proposals and persuasive texts. It helps the learner distinguish disagreement with a conclusion from criticism of the route used to reach it.
For example, a student may support later library hours but still argue that one survey is insufficient evidence of demand. That is not inconsistency. It is the difference between agreeing with a proposal and evaluating the argument used to justify it.
Workshop Chapter 08
Statistics can clarify an argument—or distort it
Numbers often create an impression of objectivity. The student still needs to ask what was counted, compared and omitted. A percentage without a denominator can be misleading. An average can hide variation. A dramatic increase can look less dramatic once the starting point is known.
Suppose a fictional school club reports that participation increased by 100 per cent after a publicity campaign. This sounds enormous. If attendance rose from 5 students to 10, the statement is mathematically correct but the absolute change is five students. Whether that counts as major success depends on the club’s goals, capacity and context.
Now suppose another report says that the average wait time fell from 10 minutes to 7 minutes. That is useful information, but the average alone does not tell us whether some students still waited 25 minutes. If fairness or extreme delays matter, the distribution becomes important.
Questions to ask of a quantitative claim
- What is the denominator?
- What is the baseline?
- What time period is being compared?
- Is this an average, total, rate or percentage?
- How large is the sample?
- What information might be hidden by the summary number?
These are reading questions, but they also improve writing. A student who uses numbers should state them in a way that allows the reader to understand their scale. “Eight of ten respondents” may be more transparent than “80 per cent” when the sample is very small.
Try a quantitative reasoning check
A fictional programme says complaints fell by 50 per cent. Before concluding that the programme solved the problem, ask whether complaints fell from 200 to 100 or from 2 to 1, whether reporting methods changed, and whether fewer complaints reflect fewer problems or simply fewer reports. The number can be useful without being allowed to carry a larger conclusion than it supports.
Workshop Chapter 09
Examples illustrate; they do not automatically prove
Examples are powerful because they make an idea concrete. They can also be misused. One memorable example can dominate a paragraph even when it is not representative. Students need to distinguish illustration from proof.
If a student argues that exercise helps concentration and describes one friend who feels more alert after running, the example illustrates a possible mechanism or experience. It does not prove that every student concentrates better after the same activity. The writer can still use it, but the claim should remain proportionate.
A stronger paragraph might say: “For some students, a short period of physical activity may make it easier to return to sedentary work with renewed attention. For example, a student who feels restless after several lessons may find that a brief walk helps them settle before revision. This example illustrates the possible benefit, but whether the strategy works depends on the individual and the timing.”
Use examples to reveal mechanisms
An example is most valuable when it helps the reader see how or why something happens. A claim about public transport can become clearer when the writer shows how a missed connection affects a worker on a fixed shift. A claim about school feedback can become clearer when the writer shows the difference between “improve your explanation” and a comment that identifies the missing reasoning step.
The example should then return to the claim. Without that return, the paragraph can become a story that the reader enjoys but does not know how to interpret.
A useful sentence after an example often begins conceptually rather than mechanically: “This matters because…” “The example shows…” “The limitation is…” “The same mechanism would not apply if…” These phrases are not templates to be copied into every paragraph. They remind the writer that the example must perform work.

Source credibility: useful evidence still needs a trustworthy route
Secondary 3 students increasingly work with information that arrives through webpages, videos, summaries, screenshots and AI-generated responses. The first task is not to declare every source trustworthy or untrustworthy. It is to ask what kind of claim the source is making and what evidence is available for checking it.
A personal blog can be a useful source for someone’s experience. It is a weak basis for a national statistic unless it links to the original data. A government or examination-board page may be the appropriate source for official syllabus information. A news article can summarise a study, but the learner should distinguish the journalist’s account from the study itself when the exact finding matters.
Use lateral reading
Instead of staring at one page and judging it by design, open other sources and check who created it, what organisation stands behind it, whether the claim appears elsewhere and whether an original source can be found. This is called lateral reading because the reader moves sideways across sources rather than remaining inside one page.
The same habit applies to AI output. A fluent answer can still contain an error, outdated information or an invented citation. When a factual claim matters, especially for an examination syllabus, current rule or numerical fact, verify it against an appropriate source rather than treating fluency as authority.
For writing, source credibility affects how strongly evidence should be used. “A classmate told me” may support a description of one person’s view. It should not be transformed into “Students generally believe…” without broader evidence. The language of the claim should preserve the source’s actual reach.
Source-check practice
You see a post claiming that a new study proves students remember twice as much when listening to music. Before using it, locate the study if possible, identify the participants and task, check whether “twice as much” describes an actual measured outcome, and see whether the study compared music with silence or with another condition. The goal is not to reject the claim automatically. It is to know what the evidence actually says.

Bias and framing: what the writer chooses to foreground
Bias is not always a lie. A text can use accurate facts while arranging them in a way that favours one interpretation. Framing is the process of selecting which details are made prominent, what language is used to describe them and what context is omitted.
Imagine two reports about the same fictional school event. Report A says, “Only 40 students attended the new after-school workshop.” Report B says, “Attendance doubled from 20 to 40 students after the new format was introduced.” Both statements can be true. The first foregrounds the absolute number and may imply disappointment. The second foregrounds growth and may imply success.
A strong reader asks what comparison would make the interpretation fairer. Is 40 close to capacity? How many students were eligible? Was doubling attendance the programme’s goal? The text’s framing is not automatically wrong; it simply needs to be recognised.
Loaded language changes judgement
Compare “The committee revised the rule after complaints” with “The committee surrendered to complaints.” The second wording adds judgement. Likewise, “students spent time on their phones” is more neutral than “students wasted time on their phones.” The reader should identify where evaluation enters the language.
In writing, this awareness helps students control tone. A report may require neutral phrasing. An argumentative piece may use evaluative language, but the writer should know what judgement is being added and whether the evidence justifies it.

Fallacies: recognise weak reasoning without turning them into labels
Names such as “false dilemma” or “hasty generalisation” can be useful, but the real skill is explaining what is wrong with the reasoning. A student who memorises labels without understanding the error may simply attach a name to anything they dislike.
A false dilemma presents two options as if no others exist: “Either schools ban all phones or students will never concentrate.” The problem is not the phrase “either/or” by itself. The problem is that many intermediate policies are possible, such as restricted times, designated spaces or permitted academic use.
A hasty generalisation draws a broad conclusion from too little evidence: “Two students copied homework after using an AI tool, so AI makes students dishonest.” The incidents may justify concern and investigation, but they do not establish a universal causal claim.
An appeal to popularity says something is good or true because many people support it. Popularity can matter when the claim is about preference or demand. It is much weaker when the claim is about factual accuracy. “Most students prefer the new timetable” and “the new timetable is objectively better for learning” are different claims.
Reasoning repair exercise
Statement: “Every successful student wakes up early, so waking up early causes success.” The repair is not merely to label correlation and causation. Ask what other factors could explain the relationship, whether successful students actually share that habit consistently, and whether changing wake time alone would produce the outcome. A more defensible claim might be that a regular morning routine can support some students’ organisation, depending on sleep and schedule.

Situational writing is argument constrained by audience and purpose
Situational writing may look different from discursive writing, but it still requires reasoning. The student has to decide what the recipient needs to know, what information supports the request or recommendation, and how strongly the writer can state the case.
Suppose a student council wants permission to use a classroom for a peer-reading session. The writer cannot simply list benefits of reading. The recipient needs practical information: date, time, number of participants, supervision, room arrangement and what the organisers will do afterwards. The argument is embedded in the communication: the event has a worthwhile purpose, the request is feasible and foreseeable concerns have been addressed.
A strong response therefore combines task fulfilment with persuasion. “We would like to use the seminar room because reading is important” is too general. “We would like to use the seminar room from 3.30 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. for a peer-reading session involving 24 students; our team will restore the room and ensure all participants leave by 5.10 p.m.” gives the recipient information needed to decide.
Audience changes evidence selection
A message to classmates may emphasise what they should bring and where to meet. A message to a teacher may emphasise supervision and room use. A complaint to a service provider may emphasise dates, consequences and the remedy requested. The facts may overlap, but their relevance changes with the reader.
This is why memorised “formal phrases” cannot substitute for task analysis. A polite sentence that omits the key request is still ineffective communication.
Workshop Chapter 14
Oral discussion: build argument while another mind is moving
Written argument allows revision before the reader responds. Oral discussion is less forgiving. The student has to understand a question, choose a position, support it and adapt when challenged. This makes oral work a valuable diagnostic for reasoning.
Prompt: “Should schools create more device-free study spaces?” A useful answer might begin: “Yes, but as an option rather than a universal rule. Some students benefit from an environment where they do not have to keep deciding whether to check notifications, while others need devices for assigned work.”
Follow-up: “If students need self-control, shouldn’t they simply learn to ignore the phone?” The speaker can acknowledge the point rather than defend mechanically: “They should develop self-control, but environmental support can help while that skill is developing. We already use quiet libraries even though people could theoretically learn to ignore noise.”
The answer survives because it can absorb a challenge and refine the claim. A memorised speech often fails here: once the question changes, the student continues delivering prepared material that no longer responds directly.
A simple oral reasoning loop
Answer → Reason → Example → Listen → Adjust → Re-answer
The “listen” stage is essential. Strong interaction is not waiting for the other person to stop speaking so the prepared argument can resume. It is using the new information to decide what should change in the response.

Timed writing: protect the reasoning before polishing the surface
Under time pressure, students often protect the wrong thing. They may spend too long searching for a sophisticated phrase while the line of argument remains incomplete. They may rewrite an introduction repeatedly because it feels visible, leaving the final paragraph rushed.
A safer sequence is to secure the reasoning architecture first: understand the prompt, choose a defensible position, assign distinct jobs to body paragraphs, identify likely examples and note a serious counterargument. Language can then be refined inside a structure that already works.
Consider the prompt: “Young people should be required to complete community service. Discuss.” A five-minute plan should not produce five pages of notes. It should clarify the dispute. Possible benefits include exposure to community needs and opportunities to contribute. Possible objections include compulsory service becoming performative or unfairly burdensome. The judgement may depend on how programmes are designed and whether students have meaningful choice.
Once the route is clear, drafting becomes less likely to wander. The student can also recognise when a paragraph is becoming too long because its job has already been completed.
Use checkpoints, not constant clock-watching
Record where time goes in practice. If prompt selection consumes too much time, train selection separately. If body paragraphs are complete but the conclusion is repeatedly rushed, check whether earlier explanation is being repeated unnecessarily. “Write faster” is not a diagnosis.
Timing is a reasoning problem because time has to be allocated according to the value of the work. The objective is not maximum speed. It is complete, defensible performance within the actual task constraints.
Workshop Chapter 16
Revision: change the reasoning before decorating the sentence
Revision is often misunderstood as replacing ordinary words with stronger words. At Secondary 3, the most valuable revisions frequently happen one level above vocabulary. The student changes the scope of a claim, adds a missing reason, removes an irrelevant example, introduces a qualification or reorganises the sequence so that the conclusion follows from what came before.
Consider this weak paragraph: “Public transport is very important. It is convenient. Many people take buses and trains. Therefore the government should improve public transport.” The sentences are related, but the argument is underdeveloped. “Convenient” is not explained. Usage is mentioned without showing why it creates a public responsibility. “Improve” is not defined.
A reasoning revision might become: “Reliable public transport matters because many people depend on it to reach work, school and essential services without owning a private vehicle. When a network is frequent and connected, it reduces the cost and uncertainty of everyday travel for users who have few alternatives. This gives governments a reason to maintain reliability and capacity, although improvements should still be judged against cost and actual demand.”
The revised paragraph does not simply sound more formal. It identifies dependency, explains the mechanism and qualifies the policy claim. Vocabulary refinement can come afterwards.
Three revision passes
- Meaning: does the paragraph make a defensible point?
- Architecture: does each sentence have a distinct job and sensible order?
- Language: are grammar, vocabulary and tone precise enough to carry the meaning?
These passes do not have to be physically separated every time. They help students prioritise. A polished sentence that expresses a weak idea remains weak; a strong idea hidden inside unclear grammar still needs sentence-level repair.
Workshop Chapter 17
Comparative reading: agreement and difference are relationships
When students compare two texts, they sometimes produce two separate summaries and add “both are similar” at the end. Comparison becomes stronger when the relationship is identified at the point of discussion.
Text A argues that schools should provide device-free study rooms because notifications interrupt concentration. Text B agrees that distraction matters but argues that students also need to practise managing devices because technology is sometimes required for learning. A precise comparison is not merely that both texts discuss phones. They share a concern about distraction but differ in what they believe the solution should emphasise.
The same method works with tone, evidence and assumptions. One writer may rely on personal testimony while another uses survey data. One may frame the issue as a problem of self-control while another frames it as environmental design. These differences matter because they shape the conclusions each writer reaches.
A comparison sentence should name both sides
Weak: “Text B is more balanced.” Stronger: “Text B is more qualified because it accepts the usefulness of device-free spaces while also arguing that students need strategies for situations in which devices cannot be removed.” The stronger sentence identifies the textual feature that creates the judgement.
A useful check is to underline the words that refer to Text A and Text B. If only one side is actually represented, the comparison may be incomplete.
Workshop Chapter 18
Summary and synthesis: preserve the meaning before compressing it
Summary is another form of reasoning. The student decides which ideas answer the focus, which details are examples rather than core points, which ideas overlap and how to compress without changing meaning.
Suppose a source says that a reading club lost older students because the texts repeated school materials and discussions were tightly controlled. The club then allowed members to recommend books, lead discussions and choose among several text types. A summary focused on “changes that increased student ownership” should select the latter measures, not retell the entire history of declining attendance.
Paraphrasing also requires control. Replacing every word with a synonym can distort meaning. “Students could recommend titles” might become “Members gained a say in what the club read.” This changes structure while preserving the relationship.
Synthesis adds another layer
If Source A says student choice increases engagement and Source B warns that unlimited choice can create logistical problems, synthesis should not erase the difference. A useful synthesis might conclude that student choice can support engagement when the programme also sets practical boundaries. The writer has combined the sources by preserving both contribution and tension.
This is why synthesis is not “Source A says X. Source B says Y.” The student must show what the two sources together allow us to understand.

Error analysis: diagnose the decision that failed
A returned essay with a low score does not tell the student what to practise next. The visible problem must be translated into a decision. Did the student misread the prompt? Choose a claim too broad to defend? Use examples without explanation? Repeat the same reason in several paragraphs? Ignore a serious counterargument? Run out of time because the plan was unstable?
These failures can produce similar marks while requiring different repairs. More essays are not automatically useful if the same weak decision is repeated without focused feedback.

A useful revision cycle is original response, diagnosis, targeted repair, fresh task and delayed check. The fresh task matters because it shows whether the student can use the new decision without copying the previous correction.

A complete argument case: should the school extend library hours?
Use this fictional case to combine the skills. A school library currently closes at 5.00 p.m. A student survey of 120 respondents finds that 46 say they would use the library after 5.00 p.m. at least once a week, especially after co-curricular activities. Library staff estimate that staying open until 6.30 p.m. on three weekdays would require additional staffing. The school also has an online database available from home, but some students say they use the library because their home environment is crowded or noisy.
Question: Should the school extend library hours on selected weekdays?
A weak answer might say yes because many students want it. A stronger answer first interprets the evidence. Forty-six of 120 respondents indicate regular potential use, which suggests meaningful demand but not majority demand. The stated reasons identify a specific access problem for some students. The staffing cost is a real constraint, and the online database does not fully replace a physical quiet space.
Open one possible judgement
The school could run a limited trial on the days with the strongest expected demand rather than immediately extending hours every weekday. The survey provides enough evidence to justify testing the idea, especially because some students need a study environment unavailable at home. However, the evidence does not establish that permanent extension is already justified. A trial should record attendance, staffing cost and patterns of use before a longer-term decision is made.
This judgement is neither “yes” nor “no” in a simplistic sense. It uses the evidence to choose a proportionate next step. The student has moved from opinion to policy reasoning: identify need, recognise cost, distinguish digital and physical functions, and choose an action that can generate better evidence.
Workshop Chapter 21
Transfer test: change the topic, keep the reasoning
Students often perform well immediately after a worked example because the surface features are still available in memory. Transfer asks whether the reasoning survives a new topic.
Take the library case and change it to a school breakfast programme. The school is considering opening the canteen thirty minutes earlier. Some students arrive early because of transport schedules; staff costs would rise; a small survey suggests demand; an existing vending option provides limited food but not a full meal. The reasoning structure is similar even though the topic is different.
The student should be able to identify demand, alternative provision, cost, affected groups and the possibility of a limited trial. If the student simply repeats “quiet study space” language from the previous case, the surface has been memorised but the underlying reasoning has not transferred.
Transfer is why this workshop uses multiple domains. The goal is not to memorise positions on homework, phones, transport or libraries. The goal is to carry claim discipline, evidence selection, explanation, qualification and judgement into unfamiliar material.
Workshop Chapter 22
From Secondary 3 to Secondary 4 and SEC performance
Secondary 3 is the right place to build reasoning while there is still room to slow the process down. By Secondary 4, more of the challenge is converting those capabilities under time, unfamiliarity and examination pressure. The student should not be meeting claim, evidence, qualification and counterargument for the first time in the final preparation phase.
The transition therefore changes the ratio of teaching to independent execution. Early Secondary 3 work may include explicit prompts: identify the claim, underline evidence, state the assumption. Later work should remove those prompts. By the time the learner is preparing for final examinations, the reasoning route should be increasingly self-selected.
SEC preparation also requires checking the student’s actual subject level and current syllabus rather than assuming every Secondary 4 learner faces an identical paper. The reasoning capabilities remain valuable across levels, but task formats, lengths and assessment conditions differ. Use the current school and official syllabus information for examination-specific preparation.

A weekly reasoning routine that does not become a worksheet factory
A productive week does not need a full essay every day. One day can focus on reading an argument and identifying assumptions. Another can repair one paragraph. Another can use a short oral challenge. A later session can ask for a fresh timed response.
A simple cycle is: read, discuss, write, revise, transfer. The reading supplies ideas and structures. Discussion exposes reasoning aloud. Writing requires independent organisation. Revision makes the weak link visible. Transfer checks whether the change survives a new surface.
The key is evidence. If the student already handles counterargument reliably, do not spend every week drilling it because it is easy to teach. If evidence selection remains weak, keep that target active across different texts until the learner can choose support without a prompt.
Good preparation is selective. The aim is not to prove seriousness by producing the largest pile of work. It is to create enough varied evidence to know what the student can now do independently.
Workshop Chapter 24
Parent review: ask about the argument, not just the mark
A parent looking at an essay can ask questions that help the student think without taking over the writing. “What is your main claim?” “Which paragraph contains your strongest evidence?” “Where do you answer someone who disagrees?” “Is there any sentence that claims more than your evidence shows?”
These questions are more useful than rewriting the essay in adult language. The goal is to help the student see the decisions inside the work. If the parent supplies every counterargument and every example, the finished essay may improve while the student’s independent capability remains unchanged.
When teacher feedback is available, use it as evidence. If a teacher repeatedly comments that examples are relevant but underexplained, that is a clearer target than a general instruction to “write more.” Bring the original paragraph and a fresh revision together so the change can be seen.
Parents should also distinguish school-specific requirements from generic online advice. A current teacher instruction or official syllabus requirement should not be overridden because a video promotes a fashionable essay template.
Workshop Chapter 25
Final mixed challenge: make a judgement you can defend
Fictional case: A school is considering replacing one weekly assembly with a flexible enrichment period. A survey of 300 students finds that 180 prefer the enrichment option. Teachers note that assemblies are sometimes used for announcements and shared events that are difficult to reproduce in smaller groups. The proposed enrichment period would allow clubs, consultations and workshops, but room availability is limited and some programmes would have waiting lists.
Question: Should the school replace one weekly assembly with a flexible enrichment period?
Before writing, identify the strongest argument for the change and the strongest argument against it. The support for change includes majority student preference and opportunities for differentiated activities. The opposing case includes the shared function of assembly and practical capacity limits. Do not pretend that either side disappears because the survey has a clear majority.
A defensible judgement might recommend a trial rather than an immediate permanent replacement. The school could run the enrichment period on selected weeks while retaining assemblies for functions that require the whole cohort. Participation data, waiting lists and teacher workload could then be reviewed. This judgement respects the preference evidence without assuming preference alone settles feasibility.
A different judgement can also be defensible if the reasoning is strong. A student might argue that assembly should remain weekly because the shared institutional function is important and enrichment already exists elsewhere. The task is not to guess a hidden correct opinion. It is to build a position whose evidence, explanation, qualification and final weighting can survive scrutiny.
Claim only what you can support. Support it with evidence that fits. Explain the bridge. Represent the strongest alternative fairly. Then make the judgement proportionate to what you actually know.
Workshop Chapter 26
Full discursive model: should schools require one device-free lesson each day?
This model is deliberately complete so that the student can inspect the architecture of an argument rather than only its opening paragraph. It is an original teaching model, not an official examination answer and not a promise of a particular grade.
Prompt: “Schools should require every student to have at least one device-free lesson each day. Discuss.”
Position: A daily device-free lesson can be useful if it is chosen for learning purposes that genuinely benefit from sustained offline attention, but a universal rule should not prevent teachers from using technology where it is central to the lesson.
Digital devices have become ordinary tools in school. They provide access to research, shared documents, simulations, dictionaries and feedback. Their usefulness, however, does not mean that every learning task improves when a screen is present. Schools should therefore create some deliberate device-free learning, but the requirement should be tied to the purpose of the lesson rather than treated as a symbolic rejection of technology.
One reason for a device-free lesson is that some kinds of thinking benefit from a simpler attentional environment. When students are reading a demanding passage, discussing a question face to face or constructing an argument from memory, the device may provide functions that are not needed for the immediate task. Even when notifications are disabled, the availability of unrelated tabs and applications can create additional choices. Removing those choices for a bounded period can make it easier for students to sustain attention on the material in front of them. The point is not that paper automatically produces concentration. It is that a teacher can reduce one avoidable source of switching when the learning task does not require it.
A second benefit is that device-free work can reveal what students can do without immediate digital support. A learner who can produce a clear paragraph only while consulting an online model has demonstrated a different level of independence from one who can organise the same reasoning unaided. Similarly, a student who can discuss a text only after searching for ready-made interpretations may need more practice building an interpretation from evidence. A device-free lesson can therefore function as a useful transfer check. It allows the teacher to see whether knowledge and reasoning remain available when external prompts are reduced.
However, these benefits do not justify an inflexible rule. Some subjects and tasks depend legitimately on digital tools. A geography lesson may use live maps or data; a science class may work with a simulation; a language class may compare multimedia sources. Forcing these lessons offline merely to satisfy a daily quota could reduce learning rather than improve it. The strongest policy is therefore not “screens are harmful,” but “teachers should be able to choose a regular period of offline work where it serves a clear learning purpose.”
There is also a fairness issue. A school that requires students to manage devices responsibly should teach that management, not simply remove the devices whenever concentration matters. Students will eventually need to work in environments where technology is present. Device-free lessons can support attention, but they should be paired with lessons in which students practise using digital tools deliberately: opening only what is needed, checking sources and returning to the main task after an interruption.
For these reasons, schools should make deliberate device-free learning part of the timetable, but should not insist that exactly one lesson every day must be offline regardless of subject and purpose. The educational principle is sound: students need opportunities to think, read, discuss and write without constant digital support. The implementation should remain flexible enough for teachers to match the tool to the task.
Why the model works
The introduction does not announce three memorised points. It defines the dispute: technology is useful, but not every task needs it. The first body paragraph explains an attentional mechanism. The second shifts from concentration to independence, creating a distinct paragraph job. The third represents a serious counterargument: some learning genuinely requires digital tools. The fourth reframes the issue around self-management. The conclusion weighs these considerations and narrows the original proposition.
Notice also what the model does not do. It does not invent research statistics. It does not claim that devices always damage attention. It does not use an anecdote as universal proof. The argument remains strong by making fewer claims that can actually be defended.
Revision challenge: make the model more absolute and see what breaks
Change the thesis to “All devices should be banned from every lesson.” Now inspect the body. The paragraph about simulations and live data becomes a direct counterexample. To preserve the absolute thesis, the student would have to deny legitimate digital uses or redefine “lesson” unrealistically. This exercise shows why a narrower thesis can produce a stronger argument: it fits the evidence rather than forcing the evidence to fit the position.
Workshop Chapter 27
Full reading case: when a persuasive article sounds stronger than its evidence
Read this original passage as if it were an opinion article. The task is to separate what is observed, what is inferred and what is asserted.
Last term, Northbank School opened a quiet study room during lunch. Within two weeks, the room was full on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students clearly prefer silent study to social spaces, so the school should convert the neighbouring activity room into a second quiet room immediately.
The evidence is obvious. Whenever the room reaches capacity, several students wait outside. Some eventually leave. Meanwhile, the open courtyard often contains empty tables. It makes little sense to preserve large social spaces when students are asking for somewhere serious to work.
A second quiet room would also improve academic performance. Students who study in silence waste less time talking, which means they complete more revision. If the school wants better results, it should expand the quiet-study model before the examination period begins.
Question 1: what evidence actually supports demand?
The strongest evidence of demand is that the room reaches capacity on most Tuesdays and Thursdays and that some students wait outside. This suggests more demand for that room at particular times than the current capacity can serve. It does not yet establish that all students prefer silent study or that demand is equally high every day.
Question 2: where does the writer overgeneralise?
“Students clearly prefer silent study to social spaces” moves from a subset of students using one room to a claim about students generally. Empty courtyard tables do not prove that the same students would prefer those tables to be converted. The courtyard may serve different purposes or be less attractive at particular times because of weather, noise or location.
Question 3: identify a causal leap
The passage claims that a second quiet room would improve academic performance because students would talk less and complete more revision. The proposed mechanism is plausible, but the passage provides no evidence about actual learning outcomes. Completing more pages or spending more time silently does not automatically mean learning improves. The argument would need evidence about what students do in the room and whether the additional study produces useful learning.
Question 4: what additional evidence would improve the decision?
Useful information could include daily usage across several weeks, reasons students use or avoid the room, capacity of alternative spaces, what the neighbouring activity room is currently used for, and whether a temporary second room during peak periods solves the problem. The school might also test a booking or overflow arrangement before permanently converting another room.
Write a more defensible conclusion
“The current room appears to experience excess demand on some days, so the school has a reasonable basis for testing additional quiet-study capacity during peak periods. Before permanently converting another activity room, it should collect broader usage data and compare the value of both spaces.” This conclusion still acts on the evidence. It simply chooses a proportionate action.
This case demonstrates an important reading principle: a persuasive article can contain real evidence and still overstate what that evidence proves. Critical reading does not require rejecting the article. It requires reducing each claim to the strength the evidence can actually carry.

Full situational-writing case: recommend a change without overstating the case
Fictional task: Your class organised a lunchtime peer-help desk for four weeks. You have been asked to write to the teacher coordinator recommending whether the programme should continue. Use these facts: the desk opened twice a week; 38 students used it at least once; Mathematics questions were the most common; some sessions had no available peer helper for Science; several users said they liked getting quick clarification before afternoon lessons; two helpers said the desk sometimes became crowded; the programme used one classroom that is also needed for club meetings.
The communication problem is not simply “tell the teacher the programme was successful.” The writer needs to evaluate mixed evidence and recommend a workable next step.
Dear Ms Lim,
After four weeks of the lunchtime peer-help desk, I recommend continuing the programme for another trial period, with clearer staffing and room arrangements rather than making the current format permanent immediately.
The desk has met a visible need. Thirty-eight students used it at least once, and Mathematics questions were especially common. Several users also said that being able to clarify a question before their afternoon lessons was useful. These responses suggest that a short, accessible support point can help students who need quick assistance rather than a full consultation.
However, the present arrangement has two weaknesses. Science support was unavailable during some sessions because no suitable peer helper was present, while two helpers reported crowding at busy times. The classroom is also required for club meetings, so continuing the programme in the same room without coordination could create a timetable conflict.
I suggest a further four-week trial with a published helper schedule showing which subjects are available on each day. We could also use the room only on days when it is not required by clubs and direct overflow questions to a short booking list. During the trial, we should record how many students attend each session and which subjects they request most often.
This would allow us to keep a service that students are already using while collecting better evidence about staffing and space before deciding whether it should become permanent.

What the model is doing
The opening gives the recommendation immediately. The next paragraph supplies evidence of demand without saying that all students used or loved the service. The third paragraph acknowledges operational weaknesses. The fourth proposes changes matched to those weaknesses. The final paragraph explains why another trial is the proportionate decision.
This is argument inside situational writing. The writer is not simply reporting facts. The writer is selecting facts according to a decision the recipient must make.
Common failure: turning every positive fact into proof of success
“Thirty-eight students used the desk, proving that the programme is extremely successful and should definitely become permanent” is too strong. The number has no comparison with total enrolment, repeated attendance or programme capacity. The evidence supports continued investigation and some level of demand; it does not settle every operational question.

Three learner cases: same topic, different weak link
These fictional cases demonstrate why “weak argumentative writing” is not a diagnosis.
Learner A: plenty of ideas, no hierarchy
A learner planning an essay on school uniforms lists twelve points: cost, identity, discipline, comfort, weather, inequality, fashion, school pride, laundry, self-expression, safety and convenience. The student feels well prepared because the page is full. During writing, each paragraph becomes short and the essay jumps rapidly between claims.
The weak link is not idea generation. It is selection and hierarchy. The repair is to group the ideas into larger evaluative questions: practical consistency, equality and identity, then decide which two or three can support a coherent judgement. Some points become examples inside those categories instead of separate paragraphs.
Learner B: strong examples, missing bridge
A second learner writes vivid examples from school life but often ends the paragraph immediately afterwards. Asked why the example matters, the student can explain orally. The problem appears when that explanation is not written.
The repair is not “add more examples.” It is to mark the exact sentence after each example and ask whether the paragraph explains the mechanism. During practice, the learner can write the explanation in plain language first. Vocabulary refinement comes later.
Learner C: balanced until the conclusion
A third learner presents both sides fairly and qualifies claims throughout the essay. In the conclusion, however, the student writes, “Therefore it is obvious that anyone who disagrees is wrong.” The final sentence abandons the balance established earlier.
The weak link is final weighting. The student needs to state why one consideration matters more, not erase the opposing evidence. A better conclusion might say, “Although uniforms limit some personal expression, the practical benefits are stronger in a school context if the rules remain affordable and suitable for the climate.”
All three learners could receive a similar overall score. Their next lesson should not be identical. Diagnosis protects teaching time by targeting the decision that actually failed.
Workshop Chapter 30
A four-week transfer cycle: from supported reasoning to independent argument
This four-week cycle is an illustrative teaching structure, not a fixed programme for every student. Its purpose is to show how support can be deliberately reduced.
Week 1: make the hidden structure visible
Use short texts and paragraphs. Label claim, evidence, explanation and qualification. Compare one strong and one weak paragraph. Ask the student to explain why the stronger paragraph works. The tutor can provide prompts because the goal is recognition.
Writing task: repair one paragraph rather than produce a whole essay. Oral task: defend one claim and respond to one challenge. End the week with a fresh paragraph whose structure is not labelled in advance.
Week 2: choose evidence and build bridges
Give several possible pieces of evidence for each claim, including plausible but irrelevant information. The student chooses what actually supports the claim and writes the explanatory bridge. Introduce a small amount of quantitative evidence so scope and denominator become visible.
Writing task: two body paragraphs with distinct jobs. Review whether examples are explained. Oral task: the listener challenges one example and asks whether it proves as much as the speaker claims.
Week 3: counterargument and synthesis
Present two sources that disagree partly rather than completely. The student identifies shared assumptions and genuine differences. Practise representing the strongest opposing view before responding. Remove sentence starters if the learner has become dependent on them.
Writing task: a full untimed or lightly timed essay. Revision task: identify one paragraph whose claim is too broad and one place where opposing evidence improves the judgement.
Week 4: examination-style independence
Use a fresh topic under realistic time. Do not announce which reasoning feature is being tested. The student must select the route. After the task, compare the new response with Week 1 evidence: are claims more specific, examples better connected, and counterarguments represented without prompts?
The week ends with a decision, not a celebration of workload. Move reliable skills to maintenance. Keep one or two weaknesses active. If a new problem appears under time, distinguish whether it reflects reasoning, language or timing before assigning more practice.
The long-term objective is independence. A student who can produce a strong argument only when a tutor says “now add your counterargument” has learned the move but not yet taken ownership of it. The final transfer test is whether the student notices what the argument needs without the prompt.

Source-pair casebook: agree, disagree and synthesise without flattening the difference
Read these two original short texts about school start times. They are fictional teaching materials designed to practise comparison and synthesis.
Text A: “A later start would give students more time in the morning and may help those who currently arrive tired. Schools should therefore move the first lesson back by thirty minutes. A calmer start could improve punctuality and make students more ready to learn.”
Text B: “Changing the start time may help some students, but it also moves the end of the school day. Transport arrangements, family routines and co-curricular activities would have to change. Schools should first identify why students are tired rather than assuming the timetable is the only cause.”
What the texts share
Both accept that morning tiredness is a legitimate problem worth addressing. Text B does not deny the problem; it questions whether changing the timetable is the best response. This matters because “one supports students and the other does not” would misrepresent the disagreement.
Where the reasoning diverges
Text A frames start time as an important cause and treats a thirty-minute shift as a plausible solution. Text B foregrounds secondary consequences and alternative causes. The difference is therefore partly causal: how much responsibility does the current timetable have for tiredness? It is also evaluative: how much disruption is acceptable for a possible benefit?
A synthesis that preserves both
A weak synthesis says, “Some people want later starts while others do not.” A stronger synthesis says: “The two texts agree that morning tiredness deserves attention, but they differ over whether timetable change should be the first response. Together, they suggest that a later start is most defensible when evidence shows the current schedule contributes materially to tiredness and when the operational costs can be managed.”
This synthesis does not split the difference mechanically. It identifies a condition under which the proposal becomes stronger. The student has used disagreement to sharpen the decision rule.
Extension: add a third source without losing the first two
Text C reports that a small trial of later starts reduced late arrivals but did not change reported sleep duration. This would strengthen one part of Text A’s practical case while complicating the assumption that later starts necessarily produce more sleep. The synthesis could now distinguish punctuality from sleep. More sources should increase resolution, not merely increase the number of quotations.

Oral casebook: answer, challenge, recover and deepen
Oral reasoning becomes visible when the question changes. The following dialogue is an original practice sequence. The aim is not to memorise the wording but to see how a position evolves under challenge.
Prompt: “Should students be allowed to choose more of the books they read for school?”
Student: I think students should have more choice, but not complete choice. If students can select from several suitable books, they may be more willing to read carefully because the topic or style interests them. At the same time, schools still need to make sure students encounter texts that challenge them rather than choosing only familiar material.
Questioner: If choice motivates students, why not let them choose any book they want?
Student: Because the purpose of school reading is not only enjoyment. A completely open choice could make it difficult to teach shared skills or discuss a common text. I would prefer a curated list with meaningful options. That keeps some student ownership while preserving the teacher’s ability to design the learning.
Questioner: What if a student dislikes every book on the list?
Student: Then the list may be too narrow, but dislike alone does not mean a text has no value. The teacher could ask what kinds of topics or forms the student prefers and include a wider range over time. I would not promise that every student will enjoy every text.
Questioner: Isn’t this more work for teachers?
Student: It can be, especially if every student reads a different book. That is another reason I would use a limited set rather than unlimited individual choice. The model has to be manageable enough that feedback and discussion remain possible.
What to notice
The student begins with a qualified position. Each follow-up introduces a real pressure: unlimited choice, dissatisfaction and teacher workload. The responses do not abandon the original view; they refine its implementation. This is stronger than repeating “choice is good” after every question.
The student also avoids pretending the proposal is costless. Acknowledging workload does not destroy the argument. It creates a reason for a limited model. This is the same weighing skill used in written discursive work.
Recovery when the student is unsure
If a student receives an unexpected question, a short pause is better than launching an unrelated memorised answer. The learner can restate the challenge in simpler terms: “So the concern is whether this becomes too difficult for teachers to manage.” That brief reformulation confirms understanding and creates a route into the response.
Useful recovery language includes “I would separate two issues here,” “That would be a limitation,” “I would change my earlier claim slightly,” or “I do not think the example proves that much.” These phrases are useful only when followed by actual reasoning. They should not become filler.
Fresh oral transfer prompt
“Should schools give students more choice over project topics?” Use the same reasoning habits but new content. Consider motivation, curriculum coverage, assessment fairness, teacher expertise and the difference between choosing a topic and choosing the learning goal. If the response simply repeats the book-choice examples, the method has not transferred.

Writing under uncertainty: what to do when you do not know enough
Some examination topics are unfamiliar. Students sometimes react by inventing statistics, organisations or studies because they believe an argumentative essay must contain factual evidence. This creates a new problem: the writing sounds authoritative but rests on fabricated support.
A safer strategy is to reason from defensible general knowledge, concrete hypothetical examples and clearly stated conditions. If the topic concerns public spaces, the student can discuss access, cost, safety, competing uses and affected groups without inventing a survey. If the topic concerns technology, the student can explain mechanisms such as convenience, distraction, privacy or access without claiming that “87 per cent of teenagers” behave a certain way.
Hypothetical examples must be signalled honestly
“Imagine a student who shares one computer with two siblings” is clearly hypothetical. It can illustrate how access constraints operate. “A recent study found that most students share devices” pretends to factual authority and should not be used unless the writer genuinely knows and can responsibly cite such evidence in a context where citation is expected.
Hypothetical examples are especially useful for testing a policy. If a proposal requires every student to complete an online task at the same time each evening, imagine a household with limited devices or unstable access. The example reveals a fairness condition. It does not establish how common that household is.
Use conditional reasoning
When factual certainty is limited, conditional sentences let the student reason responsibly: “If the programme requires additional staff, the benefit has to justify that cost.” “If students already have adequate access elsewhere, converting another room may have less value.” “If participation remains low after a trial, the school should reconsider permanent expansion.”
These are not evasions. They show that the student understands what evidence would matter to the decision. Good judgement can include identifying what would change the conclusion.
Practice: remove invented evidence
Weak sentence: “Studies show that 90 per cent of students are stressed by homework.” Repair: “Excessive homework can create stress when the workload leaves too little time for rest or other responsibilities. The effect is likely to depend on quantity, difficulty and the student’s wider schedule.” The revised version loses the invented statistic but gains a mechanism and conditions.

The conclusion is a weighing decision, not a repeated introduction
A conclusion should show what the argument has earned. If the essay has considered benefits, limits and conditions, the final paragraph should weigh them. Simply repeating the opening position misses the opportunity to show judgement.
Suppose an essay asks whether all school projects should be collaborative. The body has established that collaboration can teach coordination and combine different strengths, but also that individual work is better for assessing what one student can do independently. A conclusion saying “Therefore group work is important” is too shallow.
A stronger conclusion might say: “Schools should use collaborative projects when the task genuinely benefits from shared roles, discussion and integration, but they should preserve individual assignments for capabilities that need to be assessed independently. The question is therefore not whether group work is better, but whether the structure matches the learning purpose.”
This conclusion performs a final act of classification. It identifies when each arrangement is appropriate. The student has moved beyond choosing a side towards building a decision rule.
Three weak conclusion habits
- New evidence: introducing a major reason that was never developed in the body.
- Moral slogan: ending with a broad statement such as “Together we can make the world better” when the essay’s reasoning was specific.
- Absolute reversal: acknowledging complexity throughout the essay, then declaring the answer “obvious” at the end.
A good conclusion can be short. Its strength comes from accurately compressing the judgement, not from sounding inspirational.
Conclusion repair
Weak: “In conclusion, social media has advantages and disadvantages, but I strongly believe it is good.” Better: “Social media is most useful when it expands communication without replacing judgement about credibility, privacy and attention. Its value therefore depends less on whether it exists than on how deliberately users and platforms manage those risks.” The second conclusion turns a list of pros and cons into a principle.

The independent argument checklist: what should remain when the scaffolds disappear
Scaffolds are useful while a capability is being learned. The test of progress is whether the student can eventually perform the same thinking without the labels, sentence starters and tutor prompts.
Before submitting a piece of argumentative writing, the student should increasingly be able to ask these questions independently:
- Have I answered the exact question rather than the topic generally?
- Is my main claim narrow enough to defend?
- Does each paragraph have a different job?
- Does my evidence actually support the claim in that paragraph?
- Have I explained why the evidence matters?
- Have I represented a serious opposing view fairly?
- Have I qualified claims where the evidence is limited?
- Have I avoided invented statistics or authority?
- Does the conclusion weigh the argument rather than merely repeat it?
- Could I defend this position if someone asked “why?” one more time?
This checklist should eventually become mental rather than visible. If the student needs to spend ten minutes mechanically ticking every item after writing, the tool is too heavy for examination use. During teaching, however, it helps make the hidden decisions explicit.
What independence looks like
Independence does not mean the student never needs feedback. It means the student can notice more of the work’s weaknesses before feedback arrives. A learner may say, “My second paragraph has a relevant example but I did not explain why it proves the point,” or “My conclusion is stronger than the evidence I used.” That self-diagnosis changes the role of tuition: the teacher can work on higher-level judgement instead of repeatedly identifying the same obvious gap.
Independence also means being able to abandon a memorised method when the task does not need it. Not every essay requires a long counterargument paragraph. Not every comprehension answer needs a quotation. Not every discussion needs three examples. The student chooses the tool because of the job.
The handover to Secondary 4
By the end of Secondary 3, the strongest outcome is not a collection of perfect model essays. It is a student who can approach a fresh issue, decide what the question demands, build a defensible claim, use evidence proportionately, revise the reasoning and recognise when the argument is complete enough to move on.
Secondary 4 can then focus more heavily on examination conversion: applying those capabilities under real time, task and subject-level constraints. That is why Secondary 3 matters. It is the year in which evidence stops being something the student merely finds and starts becoming something the student can use to think.

Workshop Chapter 36
Language precision: choose the verb that states what the evidence really does
Argument becomes more precise when the student controls verbs of evidence and judgement. Shows, suggests, indicates, demonstrates, proves, illustrates and implies are not interchangeable decorations. They state different relationships between information and conclusion.
If a fictional survey finds that 46 of 120 students would use later library hours weekly, the survey shows what those respondents reported. It may suggest meaningful demand. It does not prove that extending hours will improve grades. A writer who chooses the verb carefully reduces the risk of accidentally overstating the evidence.
The same issue appears in literary and comprehension analysis. A repeated image may suggest anxiety or emphasise a contrast. A character’s action can reveal a decision within that scene. One detail rarely proves a permanent personality trait.
A precision ladder

This ladder is not a rigid hierarchy. Context decides. A timetable can “show” that a lesson begins at 8.00 a.m. because the fact is directly stated. A small student survey may only “suggest” that a policy has broader support. Students should ask what kind of certainty the evidence deserves.
Repair the evidence verb
Weak: “One student improved after joining a study group, proving that group revision is the best method.” Better: “The student’s experience illustrates how discussion can help one learner identify gaps, but it does not establish that group revision is the best method for everyone.” The revision changes the reasoning by changing the evidential verb and the scope of the conclusion.
Workshop Chapter 37
Grammar for argument: concession, condition and cause must carry the right logic
Grammar becomes part of reasoning when the sentence has to show how ideas relate. A misplaced connector can change the argument even when every individual word is correct.
Compare: “Although the programme is expensive, it may be worthwhile if it reaches students who otherwise lack access.” The sentence concedes cost and then states a condition under which the benefit may justify it. Now compare: “Because the programme is expensive, it may be worthwhile.” The causal relationship no longer makes sense unless some missing explanation links expense to value.
Concession does not erase the opposing point
“Although” and “while” allow the writer to accept part of an opposing case while maintaining another judgement. “Although later library hours increase staffing costs, a limited trial may be justified if current demand cannot be met during normal opening.” The cost remains real. The writer has not dismissed it; the writer has weighed it against evidence of need.
Students sometimes write “Although X, but Y.” In standard formal English, the relationship is normally carried by one structure: “Although X, Y” or “X, but Y.” The grammatical repair matters because clear syntax helps the reader see which idea is being conceded and which is being asserted.
Conditions create decision rules
“If” and “unless” are powerful in evaluative writing because they state what would change the conclusion. “The school should extend the trial if attendance remains high enough to justify staffing.” “The programme should not become permanent unless the room conflict can be solved.” These sentences make the judgement testable.
Conditionals also prevent false certainty. Instead of pretending to know whether a new policy will work, the writer can identify the evidence that should be collected and the threshold that matters.
Cause requires more than sequence
“Attendance increased after the poster was redesigned” states sequence. “Attendance increased because the poster was redesigned” states cause. The second claim requires additional evidence showing that the redesign, rather than another change, produced the increase. Students should not let grammar strengthen a causal claim beyond the evidence.
Sentence repair set
1. “The survey was small, therefore it is useless.” Better: “Because the survey was small, its findings should be interpreted cautiously rather than treated as representative of the whole school.” 2. “Although online resources are convenient, but some students need a quiet physical space.” Better: “Although online resources are convenient, some students still need a quiet physical space.” 3. “The trial succeeded because complaints fell after it began.” Better: “Complaints fell after the trial began, but further evidence is needed before attributing the reduction to the trial itself.”

Revision laboratory: one weak response, five different repairs
Original response to the prompt “Should schools give students more independent study time?”
Schools should give students more independent study because it is very important. Students need independence for the future. For example, at university students study by themselves. This proves that independent study is good. Some people may say students will waste time, but that is wrong because students should be responsible. Therefore every school should have much more independent study.
Repair 1: narrow the thesis
The response jumps from a general benefit to “every school should have much more.” A more defensible thesis is: “Secondary students should receive gradually increasing periods of independent study when they have clear tasks and access to help, because this lets them practise planning and self-monitoring before post-secondary education.” The new claim identifies level, conditions and purpose.
Repair 2: improve the example
The university example is relevant but underexplained. The student could write: “Post-secondary learners are often expected to organise reading, deadlines and revision with less continuous supervision. Giving secondary students bounded opportunities to plan a study block can therefore provide practice with the same kind of self-management at a smaller scale.” The bridge now explains why the example supports the claim.
Repair 3: represent the counterargument fairly
“Students will waste time” should not be dismissed as simply wrong. Some students may lack the planning skills or subject knowledge needed to use an open period effectively. That concern supports scaffolding: clear goals, check-ins and gradual release rather than unlimited unsupervised time.
Repair 4: distinguish responsibility from capability
Saying students “should be responsible” does not show that they already know how to plan. Responsibility can itself be taught through routines: estimate the task, choose an order, work for a defined period, check progress and adjust. The essay becomes stronger when it treats independence as a capability to develop rather than a moral quality students either possess or lack.
Repair 5: rebuild the conclusion
Instead of “every school should have much more independent study,” conclude: “Schools should increase independent study gradually when students have clear goals and support, because the purpose is to build self-management rather than simply remove supervision. The amount should therefore grow with students’ demonstrated ability to use the time productively.”
One weak paragraph produced five different repairs. This is why correction should identify the decision that failed. If the tutor merely rewrites the whole response, the student sees a better answer but may not know which choices created it.
Workshop Chapter 39
Fresh mixed practice: a school transport proposal
Fictional case: A school is considering a supervised walking group from a nearby transport interchange on two mornings each week. A parent survey receives 160 responses; 52 parents say their children would probably use the group at least occasionally. The walk takes about twelve minutes. Two staff members would need to supervise it. Some parents say the service could help younger students who are unsure of the route, while others argue that older students should travel independently. The school already publishes a route map, but it does not provide live supervision.
Task A: What does the survey establish? It establishes reported potential use among respondents: 52 of 160 say their children would probably use the group at least occasionally. It does not establish daily attendance, nor does it prove that the service is necessary.
Task B: What is the strongest argument for a trial? The proposal targets a specific access problem: students who know the destination but are not yet confident navigating the route independently. A limited trial could test actual demand and operational feasibility without committing permanently.
Task C: What is the strongest opposing argument? Staff supervision has an opportunity cost, and older students may not need it. The school should therefore consider the age group served and whether the same objective can be achieved through route orientation or peer support.
Task D: What would a balanced recommendation look like? “Run a short trial aimed primarily at younger students, record actual participation, and compare the benefit with the staff time required. If use is low or participants quickly become confident enough to travel independently, the service can be reduced or replaced with orientation support.”
This recommendation builds an exit condition into the proposal. A good policy argument should sometimes explain not only when to start something but when to stop it.
Writing extension
Write a message to the teacher coordinator recommending a trial. Then write a 250–400 word discursive response to the broader question, “How much support should schools provide for tasks students will eventually need to do independently?” The first task requires a practical communication decision; the second requires a general argument. Reusing the case is acceptable, but the two pieces should not have identical structure or purpose.

The handover: evidence becomes a habit of mind
The deepest purpose of this Secondary 3 work is not one essay format. It is a habit of asking what a claim rests on, how far the evidence reaches and what would change the conclusion. That habit travels into comprehension, situational writing, oral interaction, research, source evaluation and later academic work.
A student who has developed this habit becomes harder to mislead by impressive language. A dramatic statistic triggers a denominator question. A confident article triggers a source question. A tempting essay point triggers “what would prove this?” A counterargument becomes information rather than a threat.
The habit also changes revision. Instead of asking only “How do I make this sound better?”, the learner asks “What am I actually claiming here?” Instead of adding another example automatically, the learner asks whether the existing example has been explained. Instead of treating teacher feedback as a list of corrections, the learner looks for the repeated decision behind the comments.
By Secondary 4, these decisions need to happen faster and with less support. The examination setting adds time and task pressure, but it should not require the student to invent an entirely new way of thinking. The groundwork is the ability to build and inspect a line of reasoning while there is still room to learn it deliberately.
This is why the page begins with a simple chain and ends with a more demanding one. At first: claim, evidence, explanation. Later: claim, evidence, explanation, qualification, counterargument, judgement, transfer. The chain grows because the student’s responsibility grows.
Evidence becomes argument when the student can explain the bridge, test the bridge, repair the bridge and rebuild it when the topic changes.
