Memorised Facts Are Necessary. They Are No Longer Sufficient.
A Primary 4 student may know the correct fact and still lose the mark.
Why? Because the question is increasingly asking for the relationship behind the fact.
Fact → relationship → evidence → explanation.
Why Recall Stops Scaling
If a child learns that a certain structure has a function, that knowledge works only when the new question can be recognised directly.
P4 increasingly changes the surface. The student must work out how the structure, condition or process explains the outcome.
Relationships Are the Real Unit of Science
- structure and function;
- condition and effect;
- cause and outcome;
- evidence and conclusion.
These relationships transfer. A memorised sentence often does not.
Why Model Answers Can Become Fragile
Model answers are useful examples of complete reasoning. They become fragile when students copy the language without reconstructing the mechanism.
The goal is not to remember the sentence. It is to understand why that sentence is scientifically correct.
What a Tutor Should Diagnose
- Does the student identify the relevant relationship?
- Can the child connect the condition to the effect?
- Is evidence taken from the question?
- Does the answer explain the mechanism rather than repeat a keyword?
