Plants do not “take in food from the soil”. This single misconception can damage answers about roots, transport, photosynthesis, respiration, growth and food webs all at once.
This guide repairs the most common Primary 6 and PSLE Science confusions around plant food, water, mineral salts, photosynthesis and respiration. It links back to the existing photosynthesis and plant-system owners rather than replacing them.

The plant-material rule
ROOTS TAKE IN WATER AND MINERAL SALTS → LEAVES RECEIVE WATER → CARBON DIOXIDE ENTERS LEAVES → LIGHT ENERGY IS USED → FOOD IS MADE BY PHOTOSYNTHESIS → FOOD CAN BE USED IN RESPIRATION.

Concept Trap 1 — Mineral salts are not plant food
Plants absorb water and mineral salts from the soil through their roots.
Mineral salts support healthy growth and normal plant function, but they are not the food that the plant makes by photosynthesis.
Do not write “roots absorb food from soil”.
Concept Trap 2 — Water is not food
Water is a raw material required for photosynthesis and is transported through the plant.
It is not itself the food product made by the plant.
Concept Trap 3 — Carbon dioxide is not food
Carbon dioxide is another raw material for photosynthesis.
The plant uses carbon dioxide and water, with light energy, to make food.
Concept Trap 4 — Sunlight is not food
Sunlight provides light energy.
The plant does not “eat sunlight”. It uses light energy during photosynthesis.
Concept Trap 5 — The leaf makes food; the root does not absorb it from soil
Green leaves are the main familiar site where photosynthesis occurs.
Roots absorb water and mineral salts. Leaves use water and carbon dioxide, with light energy, to make food.
Keep the jobs separate.
Concept Trap 6 — Photosynthesis and respiration are not opposite words to memorise
Photosynthesis: food is made using light energy.
Respiration: energy is released from food for life processes.
Plants carry out both processes.
Concept Trap 7 — Plants respire all the time they are alive
Plants do not stop respiring simply because photosynthesis is occurring.
Respiration is needed for life processes such as growth, repair and transport.
Do not write “plants only respire at night” as a general rule.
Concept Trap 8 — Photosynthesis requires suitable conditions
Light, water and carbon dioxide are required for photosynthesis.
If one requirement is missing or severely limited, photosynthesis-related output can decrease even if the other requirements are present.
Concept Trap 9 — More of one requirement does not guarantee more photosynthesis forever
If light increases while another requirement becomes limiting, increasing light further may not continue increasing the measured output.
This is why graph plateaus and fair-test conditions matter.
Concept Trap 10 — Bubble count is not photosynthesis itself
In aquatic-plant experiments, bubble count is an indirect observation linked to gas production.
It can be used as a practical measure of photosynthesis-related output under stated conditions, but it is not the process itself.
Concept Trap 11 — Growth is not an immediate direct measure of photosynthesis
Growth happens over time and depends on many factors.
A short-term photosynthesis experiment may use gas production or another immediate observable outcome rather than plant height.
Do not treat every growth difference as direct proof of a photosynthesis-rate difference without checking the method.
Concept Trap 12 — A plant can make food but still fail to grow well
Growth depends on more than food production alone.
Water availability, mineral salts, temperature, damage, disease and other conditions can affect growth.
Therefore, “the plant made food, so it must grow well” is too simple.
Concept Trap 13 — Mineral salts support growth without becoming “food”
A plant can photosynthesise yet still grow poorly if important mineral salts are insufficient.
The repair is:
food and mineral salts have different roles.
Concept Trap 14 — Oxygen belongs to respiration as well as photosynthesis questions
Photosynthesis produces oxygen under suitable conditions.
Respiration uses oxygen and food and releases energy.
Do not assign oxygen to only one process.
Concept Trap 15 — Carbon dioxide also appears in two different process contexts
Photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide.
Respiration produces carbon dioxide.
The same substance can therefore enter one process and leave another. Read the process before deciding its role.
Concept Trap 16 — Day/night questions require two processes
In light, a green plant can photosynthesise and respire.
In darkness, photosynthesis stops because light is unavailable, but respiration continues.
This prevents the false rule “plants take in carbon dioxide during the day and oxygen at night only”.
Concept Trap 17 — Food made in leaves can be transported elsewhere
Food made in leaves can be transported to other parts of the plant for use or storage.
This is why roots, stems, flowers and fruits can depend on food made elsewhere.
Concept Trap 18 — Roots can respire too
Root cells are living cells and need energy.
They respire even though they are underground and do not carry out photosynthesis in the same way as green leaves exposed to light.
Concept Trap 19 — Photosynthesis belongs to producers, not all organisms
Green plants are familiar producers because they make food using light energy.
Animals obtain food by feeding.
Do not say consumers “photosynthesise food”.
Concept Trap 20 — Food chains begin with producers, not with mineral salts
Mineral salts can support plant growth, but the food-energy pathway begins when producers make food using light energy.
Food-web arrows then trace feeding relationships.
Original workshop 1 — fertiliser
A plant receives more mineral salts and grows better.
Question: Does this prove mineral salts are food?
Worked answer: No. Mineral salts support healthy growth, but the plant makes food by photosynthesis using water and carbon dioxide with light energy.
Original workshop 2 — root damage
Many roots are damaged.
Question: Explain one later effect on photosynthesis.
Worked answer: Damaged roots may absorb less water, so less water reaches the leaves. Since water is required for photosynthesis, food production may decrease under otherwise suitable conditions.
Original workshop 3 — dark cupboard
A green plant is placed in darkness for several hours.
Question: Which process stops because light is unavailable?
Worked answer: Photosynthesis stops because light energy is unavailable. Respiration continues.
Original workshop 4 — aquatic plant bubbles
Bubble count decreases as lamp distance increases.
Question: Why is “the plant has less food in the soil” a weak explanation?
Worked answer: Soil food is not the tested factor. Greater lamp distance reduces light reaching the plant, so less light energy is available for photosynthesis under the stated conditions.

A child exercises and needs more energy.
Question: Which plant-process misconception is repaired by this comparison?
Worked answer: Respiration releases energy from food in living cells. Plants also respire because their cells need energy for life processes.
