Primary 6 Science Learning Guide | Life Cycles: Stage Order, Growth vs Reproduction, Comparisons & Common PSLE Concept Traps

A life cycle is a sequence, not a collection of animal pictures. PSLE questions become difficult when pupils remember the names of stages but lose track of order, confuse growth with reproduction, or assume every organism must pass through the same number of stages.

This guide repairs common cumulative PSLE Science misconceptions around life-cycle stage order, growth, reproduction, comparison and diagram reasoning. The cycle-reading rule

IDENTIFY ORGANISM → FIND STARTING STAGE → FOLLOW ORDER → NOTE GROWTH/CHANGE → LOCATE ADULT REPRODUCTIVE STAGE → CLOSE THE CYCLE.

Concept Trap 1 — A life cycle has order

The stages do not occur randomly.

A diagram may begin at a different stage, but the biological sequence still follows the organism’s life cycle.

If the diagram starts with an adult, continue to offspring and then through the stages back to an adult.

Concept Trap 2 — The first picture shown is not always the biological “beginning”

A cycle has no single absolute beginning in the way a straight process does.

Textbooks often choose egg, seed or birth as a convenient starting point, but a circular diagram may begin anywhere.

Read the arrows.

Concept Trap 3 — Growth and reproduction are different processes

Growth: an individual becomes larger and develops toward maturity.

Reproduction: mature organisms produce offspring.

A young animal growing into an adult is not the same event as the adult producing young.

Concept Trap 4 — Reproduction connects one generation to the next

Life cycles continue because mature organisms reproduce.

This creates a new generation that begins its own development.

Do not write that an individual “turns into its baby”. The adult produces offspring; the offspring grows.

Concept Trap 5 — Not every animal has the same number of stages

Some familiar animals have three obvious stages. Others have four.

The number depends on the organism.

Do not force every animal into egg → larva → pupa → adult.

Concept Trap 6 — A pupa is not a universal life-cycle stage

Butterflies and beetles have a pupa stage.

Grasshoppers and cockroaches do not.

When comparing animals, ask which stages are actually present.

Concept Trap 7 — Nymph and larva are not interchangeable labels

A nymph generally resembles the adult more closely and grows through repeated changes before adulthood.

A larva can look very different from the adult and may later enter a pupa stage in familiar examples.

Use the organism-specific stage name shown by the curriculum or evidence.

Concept Trap 8 — Similar appearance does not prove same stage

Two young animals can both be small yet belong to different stage types.

Stage identity comes from the life-cycle sequence and organism, not size alone.

Concept Trap 9 — Adult does not mean “largest possible individual”

An adult is reproductively mature.

It may continue to change in size or condition, but its life-cycle role is defined by maturity, not simply by being biggest.

Concept Trap 10 — Egg is a stage, not “not alive yet”

An egg containing a developing embryo is part of the organism’s life cycle.

Do not treat the cycle as beginning only after hatching.

Concept Trap 11 — A seed is not a baby plant already doing everything an adult plant does

A seed contains a young plant and stored food, but it does not yet perform all the functions of a mature flowering plant.

After germination, the seedling develops toward an adult plant.

Concept Trap 12 — Germination and reproduction are different

Germination is the beginning of seed growth under suitable conditions.

Reproduction in flowering plants involves the production of new seeds through the reproductive process.

Do not say “germination means the plant reproduces”.

Concept Trap 13 — Flowering belongs to the mature plant stage

A flowering plant must mature before it can produce flowers and reproduce.

Seedling growth comes before mature reproductive stages.

Concept Trap 14 — Different organisms can share a pattern without having identical stages

Chicken and butterfly both begin life outside the mother in eggs in familiar school examples, but their later stages differ strongly.

The useful comparison is:

  • what is similar;
  • what is different;
  • how stage order changes.

Concept Trap 15 — Comparison needs the same criterion

Weak comparison:

“A butterfly has a pupa, while a chicken grows bigger.”

This compares a stage name with a process.

Stronger:

“A butterfly has four major stages including a pupa, while a chicken has no pupa stage and the young chick resembles the adult more closely.”

Concept Trap 16 — Arrows in a life-cycle diagram show sequence

They do not show which stage is “better”, stronger or more important.

Follow arrow direction to reconstruct order.

Concept Trap 17 — Missing-stage questions require inference from the cycle, not guessing from shape

If a diagram shows egg → larva → ? → adult for a butterfly, the missing stage is pupa because that completes the known sequence.

The inference comes from stage order.

Concept Trap 18 — Time spent in a stage is not shown by arrow length unless stated

A longer arrow on the page does not mean more time passes.

Use time values only when the question provides them.

Concept Trap 19 — One cycle can start at a different point and still be the same cycle

A diagram beginning at adult butterfly and another beginning at egg can represent the same cycle if stage order is preserved.

This is a useful representation-transfer skill.

Concept Trap 20 — Environmental conditions can affect development without changing the identity of the life cycle

Temperature, food, water and habitat conditions can affect survival or development speed.

That does not mean the organism has become a different species or acquired an entirely different life-cycle sequence.

Original workshop 1 — butterfly

Stages shown: adult → egg → larva → pupa → adult.

Question: Which stage is primarily associated with feeding and rapid growth in the familiar butterfly example?

Worked answer: The larva stage.

Original workshop 2 — grasshopper

Stages shown: egg → nymph → adult.

Question: Why is “pupa” incorrect?

Worked answer: The grasshopper life cycle does not include a pupa stage; the young stage is a nymph that develops toward adulthood.

Original workshop 3 — chicken

Question: Compare young chicken and butterfly young stage.

Worked answer: A chick resembles the adult chicken in basic body form, while a butterfly larva looks very different from the adult butterfly and later enters a pupa stage.

Original workshop 4 — flowering plant

Question: Why is “seed germinates and reproduces” inaccurate?

Worked answer: Germination begins the growth of the young plant. Reproduction occurs later when the mature plant produces new seeds through its reproductive process.

Original workshop 5 — rotated cycle

A butterfly diagram begins with pupa at the top instead of egg.

Question: Has the life cycle changed?

Worked answer: No. The diagram has chosen a different starting point, but the same stage order remains when the arrows are followed.

The STAGE test

  1. S — Species: which organism?
  2. T — Track arrows: what is the order?
  3. A — Adult: where is reproductive maturity?
  4. G — Growth stage: what changes before adulthood?
  5. E — Entry to next generation: how are offspring produced?

The COMPARE test

  1. C — Criterion: same feature in both cycles?
  2. O — Order: same or different sequence?
  3. M — Missing/extra stages: pupa, nymph or others?
  4. P — Physical resemblance: young similar to adult?
  5. A — Adult reproduction: how does next generation begin?
  6. R — Relevant evidence: use diagram/text, not assumptions.
  7. E — Express both sides: complete comparison.

Official boundary

Life cycles are introduced earlier in Primary Science and reproduction is extended later. PSLE Science is cumulative, so pupils must still compare stages, order and reproductive continuity. Name the organism. Follow the arrows. Separate growth from reproduction. Compare like with like. Close the cycle without inventing missing stages.
