Primary 6 Science Learning Guide | Digestive System: Digestion vs Absorption, Food Path, Small Intestine, Large Intestine & Common PSLE Concept Traps

Food does not become “energy” the moment it reaches the stomach. It must first be broken down, soluble digested food substances must be absorbed, those substances must be transported to cells, and respiration then releases usable energy.

This guide repairs common Primary 6 and cumulative PSLE Science misconceptions around digestion, absorption, the food path, the small intestine, the large intestine and the connection to blood and respiration. The canonical human digestive-system pages remain the concept owners; this page is the P6 misconception-repair and transfer layer.

The digestive-path rule

MOUTH → GULLET → STOMACH → SMALL INTESTINE → LARGE INTESTINE → RECTUM/ANUS, WHILE DIGESTION BREAKS FOOD DOWN AND ABSORPTION MOVES SOLUBLE DIGESTED FOOD SUBSTANCES INTO THE BLOOD.

Concept Trap 1 — Digestion is not the same as eating

Eating brings food into the body.

Digestion breaks large food pieces and substances into smaller, soluble substances that can be absorbed.

Concept Trap 2 — Chewing is part of digestion but does not complete it

Chewing breaks food into smaller pieces and increases surface area for further digestive action.

The food still undergoes additional digestion after swallowing.

Concept Trap 3 — The gullet does not digest most food

The gullet transports swallowed food from the mouth to the stomach.

Its main Primary-level role is movement, not major digestion.

Concept Trap 4 — The stomach is not the only digestive organ

Digestion begins in the mouth and continues in the stomach and small intestine.

Do not write “all digestion happens in the stomach”.

Concept Trap 5 — Digestion is not absorption

Digestion: breaks food down.

Absorption: moves soluble digested food substances through the intestinal wall into the blood.

Concept Trap 6 — The small intestine is the main site of absorption of digested food substances

Its long length and large inner surface help absorption occur efficiently.

Do not say “food is absorbed in the stomach” as the main pathway.

Concept Trap 7 — Undigested food does not enter the blood as large chunks

Large undigested pieces remain in the digestive tract.

Soluble digested food substances are absorbed into the blood.

Concept Trap 8 — The blood does not digest food

Blood transports absorbed digested food substances after they enter the circulatory system.

Transport and digestion are different jobs.

Concept Trap 9 — The large intestine is not where most digested food is absorbed

The large intestine mainly absorbs water from the remaining undigested material in the Primary-level model.

Most digested food-substance absorption occurs earlier in the small intestine.

Concept Trap 10 — Faeces are not “all the food the body did not need”

Faeces contain undigested material, water, bacteria and other waste matter.

Useful digested food substances should already have been absorbed earlier.

Concept Trap 11 — Egestion is not excretion

Egestion: removal of undigested food material from the digestive tract.

Excretion: removal of metabolic waste produced by body cells.

Do not use the words interchangeably.

Concept Trap 12 — Digestion does not “make blood”

Digestion produces soluble food substances that can be absorbed into the blood.

The blood remains the transport medium.

Concept Trap 13 — Food does not go from stomach directly to every body cell

The pathway is:

digestive tract → absorption into blood → circulation → body cells.

Concept Trap 14 — Oxygen and digested food have different origins

Oxygen enters the blood through the respiratory system.

Digested food substances enter the blood from the digestive system.

Both are transported by the circulatory system to cells.

Concept Trap 15 — Respiration is what releases energy from food

The digestive system makes food substances available to the body.

Respiration in cells then releases energy from food using oxygen.

Do not say “the stomach releases energy for the muscles”.

Concept Trap 16 — A longer small intestine supports absorption by providing more opportunity and surface

The detailed microscopic anatomy is not necessary for every Primary answer, but the functional idea is important: a large absorbing surface improves uptake.

Concept Trap 17 — Food path and waste-removal path are continuous

Material that is not digested or absorbed continues through the large intestine and is eventually egested.

It does not disappear after nutrients are absorbed.

Concept Trap 18 — Water can be absorbed without being “digested”

Water molecules are already small enough to be absorbed.

They do not need to be chemically broken down first.

Concept Trap 19 — Fibre is useful even though it is not digested into food substances in the same way

Fibre helps material move through the digestive tract and supports healthy bowel function.

Do not classify “not digested” as “useless”.

Concept Trap 20 — A blocked or shortened absorption pathway affects the whole body

If less digested food substance is absorbed, less becomes available for transport to cells.

System questions therefore link digestive, circulatory and respiratory ideas.

Question: Put these in order: stomach, mouth, small intestine, gullet.

Worked answer: mouth → gullet → stomach → small intestine.

Original workshop 2 — digestion versus absorption

Question: Why is “the small intestine digests all the food into blood” inaccurate?

Worked answer: Digestion breaks food into smaller soluble substances. Absorption then moves those soluble digested food substances through the small-intestine wall into the blood.

A pupil eats a meal and later runs.

Worked answer: Digested food substances are absorbed into the blood and transported to muscle cells. Oxygen is also transported there, and respiration releases energy for muscle activity.

Original workshop 4 — large intestine

Question: State one important role of the large intestine.

Worked answer: It absorbs water from the remaining undigested material before waste is egested.

Original workshop 5 — damaged small intestine

Suppose the absorbing surface of the small intestine is greatly reduced.

Prediction: Less digested food substance may enter the blood, reducing the amount available to body cells.

  1. D — Destination: where is the food now?
  2. I — Intake/path: mouth, gullet, stomach, intestines?
  3. G — Grinding/breakdown: what digestion occurs?
  4. E — Entry to blood: where does absorption happen?
  5. S — System link: how does blood transport absorbed substances?
  6. T — Tissue use: how do cells use the substances?

Official boundary

The digestive system is introduced before P6 and remains cumulative for PSLE. This guide focuses on pathway, digestion, absorption and system integration without introducing Secondary-level enzyme chemistry.
