A folder full of worksheets is not automatically a Science portfolio.
A portfolio has a different job.
It selects evidence deliberately so that a learner, parent or tutor can see what the child could do before, what changed, what remains unstable and whether the improvement transfers beyond one familiar question.
A strong Science portfolio is a curated argument about learning.

Why Portfolios Belong in Primary Science
The current Singapore Primary Science syllabus recognises portfolios as a systematic and purposeful collection of student work that can provide a broader picture of development in knowledge, skills and scientific understanding.

If every worksheet is kept, the strongest evidence can disappear inside volume.
Portfolio curation asks:

- Which item shows repair?
- Which item shows transfer?
- Which item shows independent work?
Selection creates meaning.
Portfolio Principle 1 | Keep Before and After
Suppose the learner first writes:
“Cold went into the spoon.”
Later they write:
“Heat transferred from the hotter soup to the cooler spoon, so the spoon’s temperature increased.”
The pair is more informative than the final answer alone.
Growth becomes visible because the wrong model and repaired model can be compared.
Portfolio Principle 2 | Keep the Reason for Revision
Do not only show:
Version 1 → Version 2.
Add:
“I changed this because I had confused heat with temperature.”
The reflection identifies the conceptual repair.
Portfolio Principle 3 | Show Transfer
A repaired metal-spoon answer may still be surface memorisation.
Add a second item:
metal rod touching a hot block.
If the learner uses the same hotter-to-colder transfer model independently, the portfolio now shows transfer.
Portfolio Principle 4 | Show More Than Scores
A score tells how many answers were marked correct.
A portfolio can show:
- which model was used;
- how the answer was revised;
- whether prompts were needed;
- how the learner handled an unfamiliar diagram;
- whether confidence matched accuracy.
Portfolio Principle 5 | Label the Capability
Each item should answer:
“What does this piece of work prove about my learning?”
Possible capability labels:
- fact retrieval;
- cause-and-effect reasoning;
- measurement;
- diagram interpretation;
- fair-test design;
- evidence selection;
- open-ended explanation;
- transfer;
- self-correction;
- scientific discussion.

A project portfolio can include:
- original question;
- pilot result;
- method change;
- raw data;
- final artefact;
- presentation reflection.
Do not keep only the final poster.
Artefact Type 7 | Oral Explanation Evidence
A tutor can record a short note:
“Explained root damage → reduced water absorption → wilting without prompt; transferred to unfamiliar plant.”
Not every portfolio item must be a paper worksheet.
Artefact Type 8 | MCQ Distractor Analysis
Keep one question where the learner can explain:
- why the correct option fits;
- why each distractor fails;
- which misconception each wrong option represents.
This demonstrates reasoning beyond answer selection.
Artefact Type 9 | “Cannot Determine” Case
A strong portfolio should include at least one case where the learner correctly refuses to overclaim.
Example:
two final temperatures with no starting values.
Correct reasoning:
“Cannot determine which cooled more because initial temperatures are needed.”
This demonstrates evidence boundary control.
Artefact Type 10 | Decision With Criteria
Keep a decision table showing:
- purpose;
- options;
- criteria;
- evidence;
- final choice;
- trade-off.
This shows that “best” became a criteria-based judgment.
Artefact Type 11 | Peer Critique and Revision
Keep:
Claim → peer challenge → revised claim.
Example:
“Foam is always best” → “Did we test every material?” → “Foam reduced cooling more than cloth under the tested conditions.”
Artefact Type 12 | Independent Retrieval
Include one blank-page reconstruction:
- digestive route;
- plant function map;
- heat transfer model;
- light path.
Mark whether it was done with notes, prompt or independently.

A useful P4 portfolio can have five sections:

Select evidence of stable core knowledge:

Representative Evidence
Representative means the item is typical enough to show the capability, not chosen only because it is perfect.
A portfolio with only the easiest correct questions can exaggerate mastery.
Include One Hard Item
For each major capability, include at least one unfamiliar or changed-surface question.
This reveals whether the knowledge transfers.
Include One Error
A portfolio should not hide all mistakes.
One well-analysed error can be stronger evidence of learning than five routine correct answers.
Include One Independent Success
Mark:
“Completed without prompt.”
Independence is an important change to preserve.
Prompt Level as Evidence
Use simple labels:
- full support;
- one cue;
- routine reminder;
- independent.
Two identical correct answers can represent different mastery if one required heavy prompting.
Confidence as Evidence
Keep selected examples showing:
- high confidence + correct;
- high confidence + wrong misconception;
- low confidence + correct.
The goal is calibrated confidence.

Portfolio and Mastery
Mastery is stronger when evidence shows:
- retrieval;
- application;
- explanation;
- transfer;
- self-correction;
- delayed success.
A single perfect answer does not show all six.
Portfolio and Delayed Evidence
Keep one item from immediately after teaching and one from later.
If the learner succeeds after a delay, the evidence is stronger.
Portfolio and Counterexamples
Suppose the learner has mastered:
“liquid volume remains fixed when shape changes without loss.”
Add:
- water in bowl;
- oil in tray;
- juice in bottle.
Transfer across examples strengthens the portfolio claim.
Portfolio and Model Limits
