Primary 4 Science Learning Guide | Oral Explanation, Teach-Back and Questioning

A pupil can sometimes write a familiar model answer while being unable to explain the same Science in their own words.

That gap matters.

Oral explanation removes some of the support hidden inside copied phrasing and forces the learner to rebuild the relationship live.

If a learner can teach the idea clearly, answer one sensible follow-up question and transfer it to a new example, the knowledge is more likely to be usable.

Quick Answer: What Is Teach-Back?

Teach-back asks the learner to explain a scientific idea as though teaching another pupil.

A strong teach-back should include:

  • the key scientific idea;
  • one clear relationship;
  • one example;
  • one misconception to avoid;
  • one new example or follow-up question.

A useful eduKate routine is:

EXPLAIN → EXAMPLE → WHY → CHECK → NEW EXAMPLE → QUESTION

This is a teaching routine, not an official MOE marking formula.

Why Oral Explanation Helps

Writing can hide weak understanding behind memorised sentences.

Speaking exposes:

  • unclear references;
  • missing causal steps;
  • incorrect sequence;
  • confused vocabulary;
  • overconfidence;
  • surface dependence.

The learner has to choose the words in real time.

Oral Explanation Is Not a Performance

The goal is not polished public speaking.

The goal is scientific clarity.

A hesitant but accurate explanation is stronger than a fluent incorrect one.

Start With One Sentence

Ask:

“What is the main idea?”

Heat:

“Heat transfers from hotter to colder.”

Matter:

“A liquid has fixed volume but no fixed shape.”

Plants:

“Roots absorb water and mineral salts and anchor the plant.”

Then expand only if needed.

Add the Relationship

Fact:

“Roots absorb water.”

Relationship:

“If many roots are damaged, the plant may absorb less water and wilt more.”

Teach-back should move from fact to use.

Original Teach-Back: Heat

Prompt:

“Teach me why a metal spoon warms in hot soup.”

Strong response:

“The soup is hotter than the spoon, so heat transfers to the spoon. Metal conducts heat well, so heat moves along the spoon and the handle warms.”

Follow-up:

“What if the spoon started hotter than the soup?”

Expected transfer:

heat direction reverses.

Original Teach-Back: Matter

Prompt:

“Teach me why water can look lower in a wider bowl without losing volume.”

Strong response:

“The liquid changes shape to fit the container. A wider bowl spreads the same volume over a larger base, so the height can be lower even though the volume is unchanged.”

Follow-up:

“Would the same idea work for cooking oil?”

This tests transfer.

Original Teach-Back: Light

Prompt:

“Explain how we see a book.”

Strong response:

“Light from a source reaches the book and is reflected into the eye. We see the book when that reflected light enters the eye.”

Follow-up:

“What if the room is completely dark?”

The learner should explain why insufficient light reaches the eye.

Original Teach-Back: Digestion

Prompt:

“Teach the digestive route without looking.”

Response:

Mouth → gullet → stomach → small intestine → large intestine.

Follow-up:

“What does the gullet do?”

Then:

“Which part absorbs digested food?”

This checks route and function separately.

Original Teach-Back: Plant Systems

Prompt:

“Teach me what roots do and why root damage matters.”

Expected:

  • anchor plant;
  • absorb water/mineral salts;
  • damage can reduce water uptake;
  • reduced water uptake can lead to wilting.

Follow-Up Questions Reveal Depth

The first explanation may be memorised.

A follow-up question reveals whether the learner can run the model.

Useful follow-ups:

  • “What if I reverse the condition?”
  • “What evidence would show that?”
  • “What is the common misconception?”
  • “Can you explain it using another object?”
  • “What part of your explanation would stay the same?”

Ask “Why?” Selectively

Repeated “Why?” can become frustrating or vague.

Better questions are discriminating:

“Which scientific property explains the result?”

“What changed first?”

“Which evidence supports that claim?”

“What comes next in the route?”

The One-Question Rule

After a learner explains, ask one question that tests the weakest point.

If they confuse heat and temperature:

“What gains heat, and what changes in temperature?”

If they say “closer” in Light:

“Closer to what?”

One good question can reveal more than ten generic prompts.

Teach-Back and Vocabulary

Listen for precise verbs:

  • absorb;
  • transport;
  • reflect;
  • transfer;
  • measure;
  • compare;
  • conclude.

Vague verbs often expose vague models.

Teach-Back and Pronouns

Weak:

“It goes there and then it absorbs it.”

Ask:

“What is ‘it’?”

Replace with exact nouns.

Oral language can be repaired before written answers are attempted.

Teach-Back and Sequence

Ask the learner to explain a process in order.

Examples:

  • digestive route;
  • cause-effect in root damage;
  • heat transfer followed by temperature change;
  • investigation question → method → evidence → conclusion.

Incorrect ordering becomes immediately visible.

Teach-Back and Evidence

After the explanation ask:

“What evidence from the question supports that?”

This prevents the learner from giving a true fact that does not answer the actual case.

Teach-Back and Confidence

Ask the learner to rate confidence before the follow-up question.

Then compare:

  • high confidence + accurate transfer;
  • high confidence + misconception;
  • low confidence + accurate reasoning.

The goal is calibrated confidence.

Teach-Back and Misconception Repair

Wrong model:

“Cold moves from ice into water.”

Instead of correcting immediately, ask:

“Which object is hotter?”

“Which direction does heat move?”

Then ask the learner to re-teach the explanation.

Teach-Back and Diagram Use

Ask the learner to point to a diagram while explaining.

Then remove the diagram.

Finally use a different diagram.

This gradually removes representation support.

Teach-Back and Concept Maps

Give a blank concept map.

The learner fills and explains each link aloud.

This checks whether the relationship words are understood rather than copied.

Teach-Back and Fair Tests

Prompt:

“Explain this investigation to a classmate.”

The learner should be able to state:

  • question;
  • what changes;
  • what is measured;
  • what stays comparable;
  • what result would support the prediction.

Teach-Back and Multi-Step Questions

Ask the learner to narrate the plan before solving:

“First I calculate the decrease, then compare the two cups, then use the material property to explain why.”

This reduces impulsive calculation.

Teach-Back and Missing Information

Prompt:

“Explain why you cannot determine which cup cooled more.”

Strong response:

“Only final temperatures are given. I need the starting temperatures to calculate each decrease.”

Oral explanation confirms that “cannot determine” is reasoned, not guessed.

Teach-Back to a Younger Learner

Ask the Primary 4 learner to explain one concept as though to a Primary 2 child.

They must simplify without becoming inaccurate.

Example:

“Heat moves from the hotter thing to the colder thing.”

Then restore formal terms afterward.

Teach-Back to an Expert

Now ask for precise scientific language.

This teaches flexible communication:

  • simple explanation;
  • precise explanation;
  • same model.

Do Not Reward Length

A two-sentence explanation can be complete.

A two-minute answer can be full of irrelevant facts.

Evaluate:

  • accuracy;
  • relationship;
  • evidence;
  • clarity;
  • transfer.

Common Oral-Explanation Errors

  • recites memorised sentence without adapting;
  • uses vague pronouns;
  • gives facts but no relationship;
  • cannot answer one follow-up;
  • confuses observation and explanation;
  • adds advanced vocabulary inaccurately;
  • becomes less accurate when simplifying;
  • cannot transfer to a new example.

A 25-Minute Teach-Back Lesson

Minutes 1–5: retrieve one core idea.

Minutes 6–10: explain it aloud with one example.

Minutes 11–15: answer one follow-up and one counterexample.
