Science classification is more demanding because the grouping rule must be explicit, consistent and connected to observable or measurable properties.
A scientific group is not “things that feel similar”. It is a set defined by a criterion that every member can be checked against.

Classification Is a Reasoning Skill Across Science
Primary 4 Science gives many opportunities to group and distinguish:
- solids, liquids and gases;
- good and poor conductors of heat in common school contexts;
- plant parts by function;
- digestive-system parts by role;
- observations, inferences and conclusions;
- changed, measured and controlled conditions;
- light sources and non-light-source objects.
The details differ, but the classification structure repeats.
Wait, What? A Grouping Rule Must Be Stated
Suppose four objects are placed into two groups.
Group A: spoon, coin.
Group B: ruler, rubber eraser.
What is the rule?
Maybe A is metal and B is non-metal.
Maybe A conducts heat better than B in a classroom comparison.
Maybe A is shiny and B less shiny.
The same items can be grouped differently under different criteria.
A grouping is incomplete until the criterion is known.
One Property at a Time
For early classification, use one clear property.
Example: group by state of matter.

This is stronger than identifying a familiar substance by name.
Classification by Function
Plant parts can be grouped by function:

- stem — support and connection;
- leaves — important food-making role.
Digestive parts can also be grouped broadly by function:
- transport — gullet;
- digestion/process — mouth, stomach, small intestine;
- absorption — small intestine and large intestine, but absorbing different substances.
Notice that one organ can participate in more than one role. Real systems do not always fit perfectly into one simple box.
Overlapping Categories
Some classifications allow overlap.
The small intestine is involved in digestion and absorption.
If the rule says “parts involved in absorption”, it belongs.
If the rule says “parts involved in digestion”, it can also belong.
This teaches an important idea:
categories depend on the question being asked.
Mutually Exclusive vs Overlapping Groups
Some classifications are mutually exclusive under the chosen criterion.
An object cannot be both a solid and liquid at the same moment under one ordinary classroom condition.
Other categories can overlap.
An organ can perform more than one function.
The learner should know which kind of classification is being used.
Similarity and Difference
Classification depends on noticing both.
Example: small intestine and large intestine.
Similarity: both are parts of the digestive system and absorb substances.
Difference: small intestine absorbs digested food; large intestine mainly absorbs water from remaining material.
A good comparison can reveal the criterion for grouping.

Every placement should have a reason.
Weak:
“X is a gas because I think so.”
Stronger:
“X has no fixed shape and no fixed volume, so it matches the gas category.”
Classification becomes scientific when evidence supports the criterion.
Borderline Cases
Not every real object fits a simple classroom category perfectly.
A soft solid can change shape when squeezed.
A sponge contains air spaces.
Modelling clay can be reshaped.
These examples are useful for discussing model limits.
At Primary 4, the learner should apply the intended property model rather than conclude that all categories are meaningless.
Test the Criterion With a New Item
A good classification rule should work on an item the pupil has not seen before.
If the rule is “liquid = no fixed shape but fixed volume”, a new liquid should still fit.
If the rule is merely “water-like things go here”, the rule is surface-based and weak.

Object Z has a fixed shape and fixed volume.
It can be moved from container to container without taking the container’s shape.
Classification: solid.
The item can be classified without knowing what material it is.

A simple decision tree can help:
Does it have fixed shape?
Yes → likely solid.
No → ask: Does it have fixed volume?
Yes → liquid.
No → gas.
This is a useful reasoning tool, not a complete physical-science theory.
