A child can recognise the correct option on a worksheet and still be unable to explain the Science aloud.
An oral viva makes that difference visible. There are no answer choices to lean on, no familiar worksheet layout to trigger memory, and no model answer beside the question. The pupil has to retrieve the idea, connect it to evidence and explain the relationship in ordinary speech.
This Primary 3 Science Oral Viva is designed as a diagnostic conversation for the living-world domain. It covers living and non-living things, broad living groups, flowering and non-flowering plants, animal groups, fungi, bacteria, observation, classification and evidence limits. It is not an oral examination syllabus. It is a way for teachers and parents to find the first weak link before adding more worksheets.
Wait, What? A Correct One-Word Answer Can Hide a Weak Concept
Ask, “Is a robot living?” The pupil says “No.” That final answer may be correct, but it does not tell us why.
Now ask, “What if the robot moves toward light?” If the pupil changes to “Then it is living”, the first answer was probably remembered rather than reasoned.
A viva therefore uses follow-up questions deliberately. The first response tells you what the child can retrieve. The second and third reveal whether the idea survives a changed example.
Do not stop at the first correct noun. Ask for the evidence, the rule and the boundary.
How to Run the Viva
- Ask one question without notes.
- Let the pupil answer fully before helping.
- Use one follow-up probe.
- Identify the first weak link: fact, evidence, classification, vocabulary or transfer.
- Repair only that link.
- Ask a changed example immediately.
Keep the tone calm and curious. The point is not to catch the child out. The point is to expose the shape of the child’s current model.
Viva Set 1: What Makes Something Living?
Question 1
Ask: “Name some characteristics of living things.”
Expected reasoning: The child should identify relevant P3 characteristics such as needing water, food and air, growing, responding and reproducing.
Follow-up: “If something moves, is that enough to prove it is living?”
Strong answer: No. Non-living things can move too, so movement alone is insufficient.
Misconception revealed if weak: one-clue definition of life.
Question 2
Ask: “A toy car moves when pushed. Is it living?”
Follow-up: “What if it also makes a sound when touched?”
Expected reasoning: Movement and response-like behaviour can occur in non-living machines. More biological evidence is needed.
Question 3
Ask: “A seedling becomes taller over five days. What living characteristic does that support?”
Strong answer: Growth.
Probe: “A balloon also becomes larger when air is pumped in. Is that the same kind of growth?”
Expected reasoning: No. The balloon enlarges because air is added. Biological growth is a living process.
Viva Set 2: Origin Versus Present State
Ask: “A wooden chair came from a tree. Is the chair living now?”
Strong answer: No. It came from something that was living, but the chair does not now grow, respond or reproduce as a living organism.
Probe: “Does coming from a living thing automatically make the object living?”
Misconception if weak: origin is being confused with present state.
Viva Set 3: Plants, Animals, Fungi and Bacteria
Ask: “What are the four broad living groups we use at P3?”
Expected answer: Plants, animals, fungi and bacteria.
Probe 1: “Where would you put a mushroom?”
Probe 2: “Where would you put yeast?”
Probe 3: “Why can yeast and mushroom belong to the same broad group even though they look different?”
Strong reasoning: Members of a scientific group do not have to look identical. Both are fungi.
Misconception if weak: classification is being reduced to visual similarity.
Viva Set 4: Bacteria and What We Cannot See
Ask: “Are bacteria living even though we cannot see individual bacteria with the unaided eye?”
Strong answer: Yes. Visibility to the unaided eye does not determine whether something is living.
Probe: “If you see a tiny dot on a page, can you call it a bacterium?”
Expected reasoning: No. Small size alone is insufficient. Identification requires suitable evidence.
Viva Set 5: Flowering and Non-Flowering Plants
Ask: “How do you decide whether a plant belongs to the flowering or non-flowering group?”
Strong answer: By whether the plant produces flowers.
Probe: “I show you one photograph of a plant with no visible flowers. Can you conclude it is non-flowering?”
Expected reasoning: Not necessarily. The photograph may not show flowers even if the plant produces them at another time. More evidence is needed.
Misconception if weak: not observed is being treated as absent.
Viva Set 6: Animal Groups Without Species Memorisation
Ask: “An unfamiliar animal has feathers. Which broad group is supported?”
Expected answer: Bird.
Probe: “Do you need to know the species name?”
Strong reasoning: No. Broad classification can use relevant observable characteristics.
Viva Set 7: Habitat Traps
Ask: “A whale lives in water. Is it a fish?”
Expected answer: No. Living in water alone does not determine animal group; whale is a mammal.
Probe: “Why is habitat a weak classification rule here?”
Strong reasoning: Different animal groups can share the same habitat.
Viva Set 8: Flight Traps
Ask: “A bat flies. Is it a bird?”
Expected answer: No. Flight alone is not enough to classify an animal as a bird.
Probe: “What clue would be more useful for identifying a bird?”
Expected answer: Feathers, when shown or stated.
Viva Set 9: Observation Versus Inference
Ask: “Which is the observation: ‘The plant became 3 cm taller’ or ‘The plant grew’?”
Strong reasoning: The measured increase is the observation. “The plant grew” is the inference from that change.
Probe: “If I say, ‘It grew because it got more sunlight,’ what extra claim have I added?”
Expected reasoning: A cause has been proposed. Unless sunlight was investigated, that cause is unsupported.
Viva Set 10: Classification Rule Quality
Ask: “Which is a better grouping rule: ‘cute/not cute’ or ‘has feathers/does not have feathers’?”
Expected answer: Has feathers / does not have feathers.
Probe: “Why?”
Strong reasoning: It is observable and objective for the intended classification; “cute” is subjective.
Viva Set 11: Build a Yes/No Classification Path
Give the examples hibiscus, fern, pigeon and butterfly.
Ask: “What yes/no question would you ask first?”
A possible route:
- Is it a plant?
- If yes: does it produce flowers?
- If no: does it have feathers?
- If no: does it have six legs?
Diagnostic value: If the child changes the rule halfway or asks circular questions such as “Is it a bird?”, classification logic needs repair.
Viva Set 12: “Not Enough Evidence”
Ask: “An unknown object moves when touched. Is it living?”
Strong answer: Cannot determine from that evidence alone.
Follow-up: “What extra evidence would help?”
Expected reasoning: Evidence of growth, reproduction, biological needs or other relevant living characteristics.
Viva Set 13: True but Irrelevant Facts
Ask: “A plant needs water. Does that tell you whether it is flowering or non-flowering?”
Expected answer: No. The fact is true but irrelevant to the subgroup question.
This question reveals whether the pupil can select evidence rather than simply repeat known facts.
Viva Set 14: Counterexample Test
Ask: “Someone says all things that move are living. Give one counterexample.”
Expected answer: Toy car, robot, door or another non-living moving object.
Probe: “What does one valid counterexample prove about an ‘all’ statement?”
Strong reasoning: It shows the rule is not universally true.
Viva Set 15: Hierarchy
Ask: “Can ‘animal’ and ‘bird’ both be correct descriptions of the same organism?”
Expected answer: Yes. Animal is the broader group; bird is a more specific animal group.
Probe: “Can ‘living thing’, ‘animal’ and ‘bird’ all be true at once?”
Expected reasoning: Yes, because the categories are nested.
The 30-Second Probe
For a quick diagnostic, ask three questions:
- “What evidence makes you say that?”
- “Can you think of a counterexample to your rule?”
- “What would make you change your answer?”
A pupil who can answer these is usually reasoning rather than merely recalling.
The One-Minute Viva Ladder
- Recall: Name the group or characteristic.
- Evidence: What observation supports it?
- Boundary: What similar clue would not be enough?
- Transfer: Solve a changed example.
- Uncertainty: State when the evidence stops.
How to Score the Viva Without Turning It Into Another Exam
- Secure: correct concept, relevant evidence, survives follow-up and recognises uncertainty.
- Developing: correct first answer but weak reason or fails changed example.
- Fragile: depends on species name, picture memory or one-clue rule.
- Needs repair: core classification or living-characteristic model is incorrect.
The purpose of the label is to choose the next teaching move, not to grade the child’s intelligence.
Teacher Use: Probe the First Weak Link
If a child says “whale is a fish because it lives in water”, do not immediately reteach all animal groups. The first weak link is the classification rule. Ask for another animal that lives in water but is not a fish. Then return to the intended group characteristic.
If a child says “mushroom is a plant because it grows from the ground”, the weak link is again the grouping basis. If a child knows mushroom is fungus but cannot explain why yeast can also be fungus, the weak link is transfer across appearance.
Parent Use: Do Not Turn the Viva Into Interrogation
Ask one question at a time. If the child hesitates, allow thinking time. Do not immediately supply the answer. A useful prompt is “What evidence would help you decide?” rather than “Remember what your teacher said.”
The goal is to hear the child’s model clearly enough to improve it.
Viva Challenge Round
- A robot moves and responds to light. Living or not enough evidence?
- A plant photo shows no flower today. Flowering or non-flowering?
- A whale lives in water. Which animal-group rule should you avoid?
- A bat flies. Which group is it, and why is flight insufficient?
- Yeast and mushroom look different. Why can both be fungi?
- A tiny dot is seen under a microscope image without label. Can you call it bacterium?
- Give one observation and one inference about a plant growing taller.
- Build a two-question classification path for fern, hibiscus, pigeon and butterfly.
