Primary 3 Science Open-Ended Answer Clinic | Materials, Properties & Fair Tests

Materials questions are often lost in the gap between naming a property and explaining why that property matters.

A pupil writes “plastic is waterproof”, “rubber is flexible”, or “metal is strong”. Those statements may be true in a familiar context, but an open-ended question usually asks for more specific reasoning: which evidence shows the property, which property matches the object’s job, and what the test does not tell us.

This clinic stays inside the Primary 3 materials domain. It upgrades weak answers by making the scientific link explicit: result → property → function.

Wait, What? “It Is Strong” May Be Correct and Still Not Answer the Question

If a question asks why a material is suitable for a window, “it is strong” may be true but irrelevant. The window’s stated job may be to allow viewing, so transparency is the property that does the explanatory work.

A strong answer is not a list of everything good about the material. It is the shortest accurate link between the required function and the supporting evidence.

Clinic 1: Object, Material, Property or Function?

Weak: “The material is window.”

Repair: A window is an object or part. Glass or plastic may be the material. Transparent is a property. Allowing a person to see through is a function.

Before writing an explanation, identify which category the question is asking for.

Clinic 2: “Sample A Is Strong Because It Is Hard”

Why weak: Hardness and strength are not the same idea in this P3 context.

Strong: “Sample A supported the greatest load before breaking, so it showed the greatest strength under the test.”

The answer uses the result that actually measures the property.

Clinic 3: “It Is Flexible Because It Is Soft”

Weak: “Sample B is flexible because it feels soft.”

Strong: “Sample B bent farther without breaking, so it was more flexible in the test.”

Use bending evidence for flexibility. Do not replace the tested property with an everyday adjective.

Clinic 4: Strength Versus Flexibility

Question: Sample A supports a heavier load; Sample B bends farther without breaking. Compare them.

Weak: “A is better than B.”

Strong: “A is stronger because it supported a heavier load, while B is more flexible because it bent farther without breaking.”

The answer keeps the two properties separate instead of turning them into one vague ranking.

Clinic 5: Waterproofness

Weak: “It is waterproof because water stayed on top.”

This may be close, but the key evidence is whether the material absorbed water.

Strong: “The sample did not absorb the water during the test, so it was waterproof under the test conditions.”

The wording stays proportional to the evidence.

Clinic 6: Transparency

Weak: “It is transparent because it is clear.”

Strong: “The printed word could be seen clearly through Sample C, so C was transparent.”

Observation first, property second.

Clinic 7: Transparent Does Not Mean Waterproof

Weak: “Sample C is waterproof because it is transparent.”

Strong: “Transparency does not show waterproofness. A separate water-absorption test is needed to determine whether the material is waterproof.”

This is a property-boundary answer. It understands what the current evidence cannot do.

Clinic 8: Float/Sink Without Over-Explaining

Question: Sample P stayed at the water surface while Q reached the bottom.

Weak: “P is less dense so it floats.”

Density calculations are not required for the core P3 task, and the question may provide no density data.

Strong: “P floated while Q sank in the test.”

If the question asks which sample suits a floating marker, connect the observation to the function without importing unnecessary later theory.

Clinic 9: Suitable Material

Question: Which sample is suitable for a foldable rain cover?

Weak: “Sample B because it is good.”

Better: “B because it is waterproof and flexible.”

Strong: “Sample B is suitable because it is waterproof, so it does not absorb water, and flexible, so the cover can bend or fold without breaking.”

The strongest version links each property to a required function.

Clinic 10: True but Irrelevant Property

Question: Why is Sample A suitable for a window?

Data: A is strong, waterproof and transparent.

Weak: “A is suitable because it is strong, waterproof and transparent.”

More precise: “A is suitable because it is transparent, so objects can be seen through it.”

Unless the question also states that the window must resist rain or support a load, the other properties are not necessary to answer the stated job.

Clinic 11: Fair Test—Changing Too Much

Question: A pupil tests waterproofness using a small sample with one drop and a large sample with five drops. Explain one problem.

Weak: “It is not fair.”

Strong: “Different amounts of water were used, so the samples were not tested under the same condition. The same amount of water should be used for a clearer comparison.”

The phrase fair test is not enough. Name the condition that changed and how to repair it.

Clinic 12: Flexibility Test With Different Thicknesses

Weak: “The test is unfair because the strips are different.”

Strong: “The strips have different thicknesses, so thickness may affect how far they bend. Use comparable strips so material is the main difference.”

Clinic 13: One Test Cannot Prove Every Property

Question: Sample X did not absorb water. Can we conclude that X is strong?

Weak: “Yes, because waterproof materials are strong.”

Strong: “No. The test provides evidence about waterproofness, not strength. A separate strength test is needed.”

Clinic 14: No Perfect Option

A = transparent + waterproof + rigid. B = flexible + waterproof + opaque. C = flexible + transparent + absorbs water. The object must be transparent, flexible and waterproof.

Weak: “Choose B because it has two good properties.”

Strong: “None of the samples is fully suitable because no sample has all three essential properties.”

Do not force a winner when the evidence does not provide one.

Clinic 15: Trade-Off With a Priority

If the question says waterproofness is essential but transparency is only helpful:

Strong: “Choose B because it satisfies the essential requirement of being waterproof. It is not transparent, but transparency is not required for the main function.”

Trade-off answers should state the priority instead of pretending every requirement was met.

Clinic 16: Same Evidence, Different Command

Evidence: A bends farther than B before breaking.

  • Describe: “A bent farther before breaking.”
  • Compare: “A bent farther than B before breaking.”
  • Infer: “A is more flexible than B under the test.”
  • Justify: “A is more suitable for a bendable strap because it is more flexible.”

The scientific evidence stays the same. The command changes how the answer must use it.

Clinic 17: Result Before Stereotype

A pupil expects a plastic sample to float, but the test shows it sank.

Weak: “It should float because plastic floats.”

Strong: “The sample sank in the test. The observed result should be recorded instead of replacing it with an expectation about the material.”

Clinic 18: What the Test Does Not Tell You

After any materials answer, ask one extra question: Which property is still unknown?

  • bending test → strength may still be unknown;
  • water test → transparency may still be unknown;
  • float test → waterproofness may still be unknown;
  • load test → flexibility may still be unknown.

This habit prevents overclaiming and strengthens open-ended answers.

Keywords With Jobs

Important words include material, property, strength, flexibility, waterproof, transparent, float, sink, suitable, function, compare, fair test, evidence and result.

The word must perform a scientific job. “Flexible” is useful when the object must bend. It is irrelevant when the question asks whether an object can be seen through.

The Result → Property → Function Check

  1. Result: What actually happened?
  2. Property: Which P3 property does that result support?
  3. Function: Why does the property help the object do its job?
  4. Limit: Which property did the test not measure?

Weak → Better → Strong Drill 1

Weak: “B is good for a rain cover.”

Better: “B is waterproof.”

Strong: “B is waterproof, so it does not absorb water and is suitable for helping keep rain out.”

Weak → Better → Strong Drill 2

Weak: “A is strongest because it is metal.”

Better: “A is strongest.”

Strong: “A supported the greatest load before breaking, so it showed the greatest strength under the test.”

Weak → Better → Strong Drill 3

Weak: “The test is unfair.”

Better: “Different amounts of water were used.”

Strong: “Different amounts of water were used, so the samples were tested under different conditions. Use the same amount of water for a clearer comparison.”

  1. Improve: “A is strong because it is hard.”
  2. Improve: “B is flexible because it is soft.”
  3. Improve: “C is waterproof because it is transparent.”
  4. Improve: “The test is unfair.”
  5. Improve: “Plastic floats.”
  6. Improve: “Choose A because it has the most properties.”
  7. Write an answer where no material is fully suitable.
  8. Write one property-function explanation for a window, strap or rain cover.
