A strong materials MCQ distractor often uses a true property in the wrong job.
Primary 3 pupils usually know words such as strong, flexible, waterproof and transparent. The difficulty comes when several properties are true at once and the question asks which one actually explains the function, which test actually measures the property, or which comparison is fair enough to support the conclusion.
This clinic turns wrong options into diagnostic evidence. For every distractor, identify the hidden misconception and the exact result or condition that eliminates it.
Wait, What? A True Property Can Be a Wrong Option
Suppose Sample A is strong, waterproof and transparent. The question asks why A is suitable for a window that must allow someone to see through it.
Tempting distractor: A is suitable because it is strong.
Strength may be true, but it does not explain the stated function. Transparency is the relevant property.
The best option is not the one with the most true words. It is the one that answers the exact material-property job.
Distractor Family 1: Object Versus Material
Tempting option: “Cup” is a material.
Misconception: Object name and material name are treated as the same category.
Elimination: Cup is an object. Glass, plastic, ceramic or metal may be materials used to make it.
Distractor Family 2: Material Versus Property
Tempting option: “Transparent” is a material.
Elimination: Transparent is a property. Glass or plastic may be materials.
The category check should happen before the pupil evaluates the rest of the option.
Distractor Family 3: “Hard = Strong”
Why tempting: Everyday language often treats the words as similar.
Misconception: An untested property replaces the measured property.
Elimination: In the P3 strength context, look at load-support evidence. Which sample supported the greatest load before breaking?
Distractor Family 4: “Soft = Flexible”
Misconception: Feel is substituted for bending evidence.
Elimination: Flexibility should be supported by how far the sample bends without breaking under the comparison used.
Distractor Family 5: “Strongest = Best for Every Job”
Tempting option: Choose the strongest material for a foldable strap.
Misconception: One desirable property becomes universally best.
Elimination: If the strap must bend, flexibility may be the essential property. Strength matters only if the job also requires it.
Distractor Family 6: “Flexible = Weak”
Misconception: Strength and flexibility are treated as opposite ends of one scale.
Elimination: They are separate properties measured by different tests. A sample can be both sufficiently strong and flexible.
Distractor Family 7: “Transparent = Waterproof”
Why tempting: Some familiar transparent materials are also waterproof.
Misconception: Two properties that often occur together are treated as the same property.
Elimination: Transparency is tested by seeing through; waterproofness is tested by water absorption. Separate evidence is needed.
Distractor Family 8: “Waterproof = Transparent”
The reverse distractor is equally common.
A waterproof raincoat fabric may be opaque. Waterproofness tells us nothing about visibility through the material.
Distractor Family 9: “Floats = Waterproof”
Misconception: One water-related observation is used to infer another water-related property.
Elimination: Float/sink and waterproofness are different questions. An object can float and still absorb water.
Distractor Family 10: “Sinks = Weak”
Misconception: Sinking is treated as a general sign of poor material performance.
Elimination: Float/sink behaviour does not measure strength.
Distractor Family 11: “Heavy Always Sinks”
Why tempting: Everyday experience can encourage the shortcut.
Elimination: In P3, follow the observed float/sink result for the specific object. Do not replace evidence with a mass-based stereotype.
Distractor Family 12: “Plastic Always Floats”
Misconception: Familiar material examples are overgeneralised.
Elimination: Use the actual test result. The question may deliberately show a plastic object that sinks.
Distractor Family 13: “Metal Always Sinks”
The same stereotype appears in reverse.
Elimination: Record what the object did in the test. The material label alone is not the observation.
Distractor Family 14: Wrong Test, Right Vocabulary
A pupil bends two strips carefully and chooses “Sample A is stronger”.
Misconception: A well-run test is assumed to answer any property question.
Elimination: A bending test supports flexibility, not load-bearing strength.
Distractor Family 15: Water Test Used to Prove Transparency
Elimination: Water absorption measures waterproofness. Seeing through the material measures transparency.
Match the method to the property before evaluating the conclusion.
Distractor Family 16: “Different Amounts of Water Do Not Matter”
Misconception: Fairness is treated as a vague classroom rule rather than evidence quality.
Elimination: If one sample receives much more water, material type is not the only important difference. Use the same amount for a clearer comparison.
Distractor Family 17: “Different Thickness Is Fine in a Flexibility Test”
Elimination: Thickness can affect bending. Use comparable strips so material is the main intended difference.
Distractor Family 18: “Repeat It Three Times, So It Is Fair”
Misconception: Repetition is assumed to fix a poor design.
Elimination: Repeating an unfair method repeats the same problem. First make the comparison meaningful; then repetition can improve confidence.
Distractor Family 19: “Most Yeses = Best Material”
A results table has five properties. One sample gets four “yes” results; another gets only two.
Tempting option: Choose the sample with four yeses.
Misconception: Property count replaces function.
Elimination: Only the properties required by the object’s job matter.
Distractor Family 20: “There Must Be One Winner”
Some MCQs or structured sets present imperfect options.
Misconception: Every science decision must have one fully suitable material.
Elimination: If no sample satisfies all essential requirements, “none is fully suitable” may be the scientifically correct conclusion.
Distractor Family 21: “Helpful = Essential”
A rain cover is required to be waterproof and flexible. Transparency is mentioned as a helpful extra.
Tempting option: Reject a waterproof flexible sample because it is opaque.
Elimination: Essential requirements determine suitability first. Helpful properties can break ties but should not replace the main job.
Distractor Family 22: Untested Property Is Assumed
A table gives waterproofness and flexibility only.
Tempting option: “Sample A is strongest because it is waterproof.”
Elimination: Strength was not tested. The correct conclusion is that strength cannot be determined from the given evidence.

Correct reasoning: B. Strength may be desirable in many products, but bending without breaking directly describes flexibility.

Sample X does not absorb water but cannot be seen through. Which statement is best?
- A. X is transparent and waterproof.
- B. X is waterproof but opaque.
- C. X is flexible because it is waterproof.
- D. X floats because it is waterproof.
Correct reasoning: B. A contradicts the visibility evidence; C and D infer properties not tested.
Worked MCQ Anatomy 3
A student tests two materials for waterproofness but pours 5 mL on A and 20 mL on B. What is the best improvement?
- A. Use different waiting times too.
- B. Use the same amount of water on both.
- C. Use different sample sizes to make the result clearer.
- D. Repeat the same unequal method more times.
Correct reasoning: B. The changed water amount weakens the material comparison. D repeats the design problem rather than fixing it.
The Four Distractor Tests
- Category test: Is this an object, material, property or function?
- Method test: Does this investigation actually measure the property claimed?
- Function test: Does this property explain the job asked about?
- Evidence-limit test: Is the option adding an untested property?
Turn Wrong Options Into Corrected Rules
- Wrong: transparent → waterproof. Corrected: transparency and waterproofness need separate evidence.
- Wrong: strongest → best. Corrected: suitability depends on required function.
- Wrong: floats → waterproof. Corrected: float/sink and waterproofness are different properties.
- Wrong: repeated unfair test → fair. Corrected: repetition cannot repair a flawed comparison.
- Wrong: most properties → best. Corrected: only relevant essential properties determine the job.
