Primary 3 Science expands the living world beyond plants and animals. Fungi and bacteria belong in the picture too.
For many pupils, this is the first time Science formally challenges the everyday idea that every living thing must be either a plant or an animal. The current Singapore Primary Science syllabus includes fungi and bacteria as broad living groups. Familiar fungus examples include mushrooms, mould and yeast. Bacteria are included as another broad group of living things.
The learning goal is not advanced microbiology. Primary 3 pupils do not need cell structure, microbial genetics or detailed disease mechanisms. They need a scientifically useful classification model, safe ways of learning from observations and images, and the discipline to avoid inventing conclusions when an organism cannot be observed directly with the unaided eye.
Wait, What? A Mushroom Is Living but It Is Not a Plant
A mushroom may grow from soil or decaying material and may remain in one place. These surface similarities can make children classify it as a plant. In the P3 model, however, mushrooms belong to fungi, a separate broad living group.
This is a powerful classification lesson: scientific groups are not decided by one visual resemblance. The learner must use the grouping system taught for the scientific task.
The Four Broad Living Groups
- Plants
- Animals
- Fungi
- Bacteria
These four groups help pupils organise living diversity. They are not a ranking. No group is “more alive” than another. Each is simply a different broad category within the P3 classification framework.
Fungi Are Living Things
Fungi are living things. At Primary 3, pupils should connect them to the general living-characteristics model rather than treat fungi as strange exceptions.
They should also understand that fungi can look very different from one another. A mushroom, a patch of mould and yeast do not have the same obvious shape, yet all can be examples of fungi in the P3 syllabus.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms are useful examples because they are large enough to be seen directly. A photograph or known edible mushroom can help pupils recognise that fungi form a group separate from plants and animals.
Unknown wild mushrooms should not be touched or eaten. The scientific classification objective can be achieved from photographs, diagrams and teacher-approved examples without unsafe handling.
Mould
Mould is another familiar fungus example. Pupils may have seen it on old food or damp surfaces. That familiarity should not become an invitation to grow or handle unknown mould at home.
The safe P3 approach is observational: use teacher-provided images or known examples. Unknown mould should not be deliberately touched, smelled closely or cultured by children.
Yeast
Yeast is also a fungus. It is particularly useful for concept transfer because it does not look like a mushroom. This helps break the misconception that every fungus must have a visible cap and stalk.
The classification lesson is broader: members of one scientific group can have very different appearances.
Bacteria Are Living Things Too
Bacteria form another broad group of living things in the P3 syllabus. Individual bacteria are too small to be seen with the unaided eye, which makes them useful for discussing an important scientific idea: not everything real and living is directly visible to us without instruments.
At P3, pupils do not need to study bacterial cells in detail. They need to understand that bacteria are included among living things even though they are microscopic.
Not Seeing Something Directly Does Not Make It Non-Living
Children often trust what they can see. That is usually useful, but Science also uses instruments, repeated investigations and established evidence to study things beyond unaided human senses.
Bacteria provide an early example. The learner should not reason, “I cannot see bacteria, so bacteria are not living.” Visibility and living status are different questions.
Classification From the Information Given
A P3 question may name an organism as mushroom, mould, yeast or bacterium. The classification can then be made from the provided identity. An unfamiliar organism should not be forced into fungi or bacteria without sufficient evidence.
This protects pupils from a common error: guessing the group from a vague appearance rather than using the information given.
Worked Example 1: Mushroom or Plant?
A pupil says, “The mushroom is a plant because it grows in the ground.”
The reasoning is weak because location is not the classification rule. A mushroom belongs to the fungi group in the P3 model.
Worked Example 2: Yeast
A question states that Sample Y contains yeast. Which broad living group does yeast belong to?
Answer: fungi. The learner should not reject the classification because yeast does not look like a mushroom.
Worked Example 3: Mould
An image shows mould growing on old bread. Which broad group?
Answer: fungi. The safe scientific lesson is classification from the known example, not touching or smelling the mould.
Worked Example 4: Bacterium
A diagram is labelled “bacterium”. A pupil says it cannot be living because it is too small to see directly.
The conclusion is wrong. Bacteria are living things in the P3 classification model. The inability to see them unaided does not determine living status.
Worked Example 5: Unknown Small Speck
A photograph shows a tiny speck on a surface with no identifying information. Can the pupil conclude it is a bacterium?
No. The evidence is insufficient. Many non-bacterial things can appear as small specks. A label, suitable instrument or additional information would be needed.
Worked Example 6: Same Group, Different Appearance
Mushroom and yeast look very different. Yet both are fungi.
This demonstrates that classification does not mean all members look alike. Shared scientific grouping can exist across very different forms.
Fungi Are Not “Dirty Plants”
Everyday language can lead children to think mould is simply a dirty patch or mushrooms are unusual plants. The scientific model replaces those loose descriptions with the fungi category.
This is a good example of why scientific vocabulary matters: it gives a more precise grouping than everyday impressions.
Bacteria Are Not Automatically “Bad Germs”
Children may hear the word bacteria mainly in hygiene or illness contexts and conclude that “bacteria means harmful”. That is an oversimplification.
At P3, the syllabus purpose is classification as a broad group of living things, not a good-versus-bad ranking. Avoid turning bacterial classification into unsupported claims about every bacterium causing disease.
Safe Science Matters
Fungi and bacteria are exactly the kinds of topics where good Science includes knowing when not to handle a specimen.
- Do not taste unknown mushrooms.
- Do not deliberately smell unknown mould closely.
- Do not culture unknown bacteria at home.
- Do not handle unknown decaying material unnecessarily.
- Use photographs, diagrams and teacher-approved resources instead.
Safety is part of scientific responsibility, not an obstacle to learning.
The “Known Example / Unknown Example” Routine
- Known mushroom → fungi.
- Known mould → fungi.
- Known yeast → fungi.
- Known bacterium → bacteria.
- Unknown organism → classify only if enough evidence is provided.
This routine prevents over-generalisation while keeping the broad groups secure.
Observation Versus Knowledge From a Model
Pupils can observe a mushroom directly. They usually cannot observe an individual bacterium without suitable equipment. Yet both can be included in a scientific classification through established knowledge.
This helps children distinguish “I observed this myself” from “Science has established this through suitable evidence and instruments”. Both are legitimate forms of knowledge when used correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- “All living things are plants or animals.” Fungi and bacteria are also broad living groups.
- “Mushrooms are plants.” Mushrooms are fungi.
- “All fungi look like mushrooms.” Mould and yeast are fungi too.
- “Bacteria are non-living because they are too small to see.” Visibility does not determine living status.
- “All bacteria are harmful.” That is an over-generalisation and not the P3 classification objective.
- “I can identify bacteria from any tiny speck.” More evidence is needed.
- “To learn mould, I should grow it at home.” Safe images and approved examples are sufficient.
How to Practise
Use a set of labelled photographs or diagrams: flowering plant, bird, mushroom, mould, yeast and bacterium. Ask the pupil to group each into plant, animal, fungi or bacteria, then explain which examples look different despite belonging to the same broad group.
For transfer, include one unknown image with insufficient evidence and ask the pupil to state that the group cannot yet be determined.
