Primary 1 number knowledge is stronger when a child can move fluently between four forms of the same number: what it sounds like, what its number word looks like, how the numeral is written, and how many tens and ones it contains. “Forty-two”, “42”, “four tens and two ones”, and a collection built from 4 tens and 2 ones are not four separate facts. They are four representations of the same quantity.

A number is not fully known because a child can copy its numeral. It is known more securely when meaning survives a change of representation.
The Four Translation Routes
- Hear → write: hear “thirty-seven” and write 37.
- Read → build: read 54 and make five tens and four ones.
- Build → say: see six tens and two ones and say “sixty-two”.
- Numeral → number words: read 48 and write “forty-eight”.
Use these routes separately at first. A child may succeed in one direction and hesitate in another. That difference is useful diagnostic information.
Session 1 | Hear the Number, Build the Quantity
Say “twenty-four” without showing a numeral. Ask the learner to build the amount using two bundles of ten and four loose ones. Then ask, “How many tens? How many ones?” The spoken name should connect to place value before written notation is introduced.
Repeat with 31, 46 and 70. For 70, the learner should build seven tens and zero loose ones. This makes the zero meaningful rather than decorative.
Worked Example 1 | Thirty-Five
“Thirty-five” contains three tens and five ones. Build 30 + 5, then write 35. The first digit records the number of tens; the second digit records the remaining ones.
Session 2 | See the Numeral, Say the Number Name
Show 42. Ask the learner to say the number name, then explain the digits. Forty-two is not “four-two”. It is four tens and two ones. The spoken number name reflects the place-value structure, even though English does not say “four tens two” literally.
Contrast 24 and 42. The same digits appear, but their places change their values. Twenty-four is two tens and four ones; forty-two is four tens and two ones.

The digits are the same symbols, but their positions determine different values.
Teen Numbers Need Special Attention
Eleven and twelve do not transparently announce their tens-and-ones structure. Thirteen through nineteen end with “teen”, but the spoken order can still be confusing because “fourteen” names the four before the ten-related ending.
Build teen numbers physically. Fourteen is one ten and four ones. Eighteen is one ten and eight ones. Ask the child to point to the ten first, then the ones, before writing the numeral.
Worked Example 3 | Fourteen and Forty
Fourteen is 14: one ten and four ones. Forty is 40: four tens and zero ones. The similar sound at the beginning makes these a useful contrast.
The Decade Names
- 20 — twenty
- 30 — thirty
- 40 — forty
- 50 — fifty
- 60 — sixty
- 70 — seventy
- 80 — eighty
- 90 — ninety
- 100 — one hundred
Some spellings are irregular enough to deserve explicit attention. “Forty” does not keep the spelling “four”. “Fifty” changes from “five”. The mathematics remains place-value based even when English spelling changes.
Session 3 | Numeral to Number Words
Give 58. Ask first for the tens and ones: five tens and eight ones. Then write the number words: fifty-eight. The place-value analysis can support the spelling rather than treating the word as a disconnected vocabulary item.
Use a hyphen consistently for compound number words such as twenty-one and sixty-four if that is the writing convention being taught. The exact punctuation convention matters less than preserving the number meaning accurately.
Session 4 | Number Words to Numeral
Write “seventy-three”. Ask the learner to underline the decade word and circle the ones word. Seventy gives seven tens; three gives three ones. The numeral is 73.
Contrast “thirty-seven” and “seventy-three”. A child who reverses the digits may be preserving the spoken parts but not mapping them to the correct places.
Worked Example 4 | Sixty-Two
Sixty means six tens. Two means two ones. Six tens and two ones give 62.
Session 5 | Build From Tens-and-Ones Language
Say “five tens and six ones”. The learner builds the quantity, writes 56 and says “fifty-six”. This route begins with place-value language and ends with both symbolic and spoken forms.
Then say “eight tens and zero ones”. The correct numeral is 80. This reinforces that zero records an empty ones place while the eight retains its tens value.
Expanded Form as a Bridge
Expanded form makes the translation visible: 47 = 40 + 7. A learner can move from 47 to four tens and seven ones, then to forty-seven.
Use expanded form as a bridge when number-name translation is unstable, not as an extra rule that must appear on every question.
Worked Example 5 | Three Representations of 68
- Numeral: 68
- Expanded form: 60 + 8
- Place value: six tens and eight ones
- Number name: sixty-eight
All four representations must refer to the same quantity.
Session 6 | Detect Translation Errors
Show “sixty-five = 56”. Ask whether the translation is correct. It is not. Sixty-five contains six tens and five ones, so the numeral must be 65.
Show “40 = fourteen”. This is also false. Fourteen is one ten and four ones; forty is four tens and zero ones.
Number Names and Comparison
Ask which is greater: thirty-eight or eighty-three. Translate each into tens and ones. Thirty-eight has three tens; eighty-three has eight tens. The larger tens count makes 83 greater.
This links number-word reading to magnitude rather than treating it as spelling practice alone.
Number Names on the Hundred Chart
Use the Hundred Chart Laboratory to connect number names with positions. Say “forty-six” and ask the learner to locate 46. Then ask for ten more: 56, fifty-six.
The child is translating speech to numeral, numeral to position, and position back to a new spoken number.
Dictation Without Guessing
Number dictation can be useful if the learner is encouraged to analyse the number. For “eighty-one”, ask: how many tens? how many ones? The answer 81 then comes from structure rather than memorising a sound-to-shape pair.
Do not treat every transcription error as a conceptual failure. A child may understand eight tens and one one but write the digits in reverse. Ask for a build or place-value explanation before deciding what needs repair.
