A clock is a circular scale, not a picture to memorise. The short hand tells us about the hour, the long hand tracks minutes around twelve equal five-minute positions, and a timeline can turn elapsed time into visible movement. Primary 1 learners become more reliable when they understand those representations rather than matching hand shapes to rehearsed answers.

Read the clock by relationships: hour position, minute scale, and the amount of time that has passed.
Session 1 | Separate the Two Hands
Use a movable teaching clock. Place the minute hand at 12 and move the hour hand to 4. The time is 4:00. Explain that zero minutes have passed beyond the fourth hour.
Now keep the hour near 4 and move the minute hand to 1. The minute value is 5, not 1. Each numeral position represents five minutes for the minute hand: 1 means 5 minutes, 2 means 10, 3 means 15 and so on.
The Five-Minute Scale
- 12 → 00 minutes
- 1 → 05 minutes
- 2 → 10 minutes
- 3 → 15 minutes
- 4 → 20 minutes
- 5 → 25 minutes
- 6 → 30 minutes

The numbers printed on the clock therefore play two roles depending on which hand is being interpreted. This is a representation rule, not a contradiction.
Worked Example 1 | Read 4:20
The minute hand points to 4, which represents 20 minutes. The hour hand lies a little past 4 because part of the hour has passed. The time is 4:20.
Session 2 | The Hour Hand Moves Too
At 4:30, the hour hand should lie about halfway between 4 and 5. It should not remain exactly on 4. The hour hand moves gradually while the minute hand travels around the clock.
This helps with times such as 4:55. The hour hand is close to 5, but the hour is still 4 because 5:00 has not yet been reached.
Worked Example 2 | Read 7:45
The minute hand points to 9, giving 45 minutes. The hour hand lies between 7 and 8, closer to 8. The time is 7:45, not 8:45.
Session 3 | Use am and pm in Context
am and pm distinguish times in different halves of the day. Primary 1 learners can connect them to familiar routines: breakfast may be at 7:00 am; an afternoon lesson may begin at 2:00 pm; bedtime may be at 9:00 pm.
Do not teach am and pm as decoration added after a clock reading. They locate the clock time within the day.
Worked Example 3 | Same Clock, Different Daypart
A clock showing 7:00 could describe breakfast at 7:00 am or an evening activity at 7:00 pm. The clock face alone does not determine the daypart; context or an am/pm label is needed.
Session 4 | Duration as Movement
Use a simple timeline for duration. A programme begins at 3:10 pm and lasts 20 minutes. Start at 3:10 and move forward four five-minute steps: 3:15, 3:20, 3:25, 3:30. The finish time is 3:30 pm.
The same relationship can be shown on a clock by moving the minute hand forward four numeral positions.
Worked Example 4 | Cross an Hour Boundary
A lesson begins at 5:45 pm and lasts 30 minutes. Move 15 minutes to 6:00, then 15 more to 6:15. The lesson ends at 6:15 pm.
Breaking duration at a convenient landmark is often easier than counting six five-minute jumps without a checkpoint.
Session 5 | Find the Duration From Start and Finish
If an activity starts at 2:15 pm and ends at 2:45 pm, count forward: 2:15 to 2:30 is 15 minutes; 2:30 to 2:45 is another 15. The duration is 30 minutes.
Ask the learner to label the answer with minutes. The start and finish are clock times; the duration is an amount of time.
Worked Example 5 | Clock Time Versus Duration
Start: 4:20 pm. Finish: 4:50 pm. Duration: 30 minutes. “4:30” would be a clock time, not the amount of time that passed.
Session 6 | Build a Daily Schedule
Create a short fictional schedule:

Ask which activity happens first, which comes after lunch, and whether reading is in the morning or afternoon. This integrates time reading with ordering and ordinal language.
Schedules Contain Constraints
If reading begins at 8:30 am and lasts 30 minutes, it finishes at 9:00 am. A second activity cannot also be described as beginning at 8:45 am in the same one-person schedule unless overlapping activities are allowed.
This introduces simple consistency checking without making the task unnecessarily complex.
Unknown Start, Finish and Duration
Time problems can place the unknown in different positions. If the start and duration are known, find the finish. If start and finish are known, find the duration. If finish and duration are known, work backwards to find the start.
Worked Example 6 | Work Backwards
An activity ends at 4:20 pm after lasting 30 minutes. Move back 20 minutes to 4:00, then another 10 minutes to 3:50. The start time is 3:50 pm.
Check Duration by Rebuilding the Finish
After finding a duration or start time, reverse the reasoning. If the proposed start is 3:50 and the duration is 30 minutes, add 30 minutes and confirm a finish of 4:20.
