Reading a clock is a coordination problem: one circular face carries two different scales at the same time. The hour hand tracks hours while the minute hand travels through sixty minutes, and the numerals 1 to 12 serve as hour labels as well as five-minute landmarks for the minute hand.
This guide develops the instrument-reading layer of Primary 2 time. It focuses on clock-face structure, hour and minute hands, five-minute intervals, individual minute marks, analogue-to-digital translation, drawing clock hands, a.m./p.m., hour/minute notation and the common errors that appear when students read both hands as though they follow the same scale.

Why This Guide Exists
A child can memorise that “6 means 30 minutes” without understanding why. Another can read digital time accurately but draw the hour hand in the wrong place on an analogue clock. The hidden job is to understand the circular structure and coordinate the two hands.

1. The Hour Hand Is Usually Shorter
The hour hand tells which hour we are in. At exactly 4:00 it points to 4. As minutes pass, it gradually moves toward 5.
2. The Minute Hand Is Usually Longer
The minute hand completes one full circle every 60 minutes. Its position tells how many minutes have passed since the current hour began.
3. One Full Circle Equals 60 Minutes
The 12 main positions divide 60 minutes into groups of 5. Therefore each numeral step for the minute hand adds 5 minutes.
4. The Five-Minute Sequence
- 1 = 5 minutes
- 2 = 10 minutes
- 3 = 15 minutes
- 4 = 20 minutes
- 5 = 25 minutes
- 6 = 30 minutes
- 7 = 35 minutes
- 8 = 40 minutes
- 9 = 45 minutes
- 10 = 50 minutes
- 11 = 55 minutes
- 12 = 00 or 60 minutes
5. Multiplication Supports Clock Reading
If the minute hand points to 7, think 7 × 5 = 35 minutes. The 5-times table becomes a clock-reading tool.
6. Read the Minute Hand First When Helpful
If the minute hand is at 8, the minute value is 40. Then inspect the hour hand to decide which hour the clock is within.
7. The Hour Hand Moves Between Numerals
At 4:30, the hour hand should sit about halfway between 4 and 5. It does not remain fixed on 4 until the minute hand reaches 12.
The hour hand tells the current hour interval, not simply the nearest numeral.
8. 4:45 Is Still in the Four O’Clock Hour
At 4:45 the hour hand is close to 5 but has not reached it. The time is still four forty-five.
9. O’Clock
At 6:00, the minute hand points to 12 and the hour hand points exactly to 6. Digital notation records this as 6:00.
10. Half Past
At 6:30, the minute hand points to 6 because six groups of five minutes equal 30. The hour hand is halfway from 6 toward 7.
11. Quarter Past
At 6:15, the minute hand points to 3. Fifteen minutes is one quarter of a 60-minute hour.
12. Quarter To
6:45 can be read as forty-five minutes past six or quarter to seven. The minute hand is at 9; the hour hand is approaching 7.
13. Read Individual Minute Marks
If the minute hand is two small marks after the 4, start from 20 minutes at the 4 and add two more: 22 minutes.
14. Count Forward From a Five-Minute Landmark
This is often more reliable than counting every small mark from 12. Use the nearest known multiple of five, then count the remaining minutes.
15. Analogue to Digital
Read the hour interval and minute count, then write hour:minutes. If the clock shows 3 hours and 7 minutes after the hour, write 3:07, using the zero to hold the tens-of-minutes place.
16. Digital to Analogue
For 2:35, place the minute hand at 7 because 7 × 5 = 35. Place the hour hand between 2 and 3, more than halfway toward 3.
17. Drawing the Minute Hand
Choose the exact minute position first. At 8:20, the minute hand points to 4.
18. Drawing the Hour Hand
At 8:20, the hour hand has moved partway from 8 toward 9. It should not point exactly at 8 unless the time is 8:00.
19. Hand Length Matters
If both drawn hands are the same length, readers may not know which is the minute hand. Make the minute hand visibly longer.
20. a.m. and p.m. Add Context
The same clock time can occur twice in one day. 7:30 a.m. might be morning breakfast time; 7:30 p.m. might be evening dinner time.
21. a.m. Does Not Mean “Before 12 on the Clock Face”
a.m. and p.m. describe parts of the day, not whether the hour numeral is smaller or larger than 12. 2:00 can be either 2:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m.
22. Use Daily Events to Distinguish a.m./p.m.
School assembly is likely in the morning; bedtime is usually at night. Context helps decide which half of the day is intended.
23. Hours and Minutes Notation
Time duration can be written with units such as 1 h 25 min. Clock time and duration are related but not identical ideas: 3:25 is a time of day; 1 h 25 min is an interval.
24. One Hour Equals 60 Minutes
This is the central unit relation behind the clock face. It explains why 30 minutes is half an hour and why 15 minutes is a quarter hour.

- Minute hand at 7 → 35 minutes.
- Hour hand between 4 and 5 → still in the four o’clock hour.
- Time = 4:35.
26. Worked Example | Read 9:02
The minute hand is two minute marks after 12. The hour hand is just after 9. Digital form is 9:02, not 9:2 in standard clock notation.

- 50 minutes → minute hand at 10.
- Hour hand is between 5 and 6, close to 6.
- Check that the hour hand has not already reached 6.

“The child arrives at school at 7:20 ___.” The context indicates morning, so 7:20 a.m.
29. Common Error | Reads Minute Hand as Hour Number
Minute hand at 8 is read as 8 minutes. Repair: each numeral step represents 5 minutes, so 8 × 5 = 40.
30. Common Error | Hour Hand Stays on the Numeral
At 3:45 the learner draws the hour hand exactly on 3. Repair with a movable clock and show continuous hour-hand movement.
31. Common Error | Hour Hand Read as the Next Hour
At 3:55 the hour hand is near 4 and the learner says 4:55. Repair: the hour does not become 4 until the minute hand reaches 12.
32. Common Error | 3:05 Written 3:5
Teach standard digital notation with two minute digits. Five minutes after three is 3:05.
33. Common Error | Hand Length Reversed
The longer hand is drawn for hours and the shorter for minutes. Repair by labelling the hands explicitly before drawing times.

35. Repair Path
If the five-minute structure is weak, practise only the minute hand first. Move it around the numerals while counting 5,10,15 … 60. Then reintroduce the hour hand.
36. Stabilise Path
Mix reading, drawing and analogue-digital translation. Include times near the next hour such as 4:50 and 4:55 so hour-hand placement must be interpreted carefully.
37. Extend Path
Use minute values not on the main numerals, then ask students to explain how they located the extra minute marks from a five-minute landmark.
