PSLE Mathematics Changes in 2026. The Important Question Is What Students Must Do Differently.

The 2026 PSLE Mathematics examination uses a revised format. For Standard Mathematics, the examination remains 100 marks, but the structure changes to two papers across three booklets, with 45 questions and 2 hours 30 minutes in total. Paper 1 is completed without a calculator; Paper 2 allows calculator use.

Those are format changes.

What does the new environment demand from the learner?

The Examination Is Still Testing a Mathematics System

A changed paper does not invalidate the Mathematics learned from P1 to P6. It changes how that capability has to be deployed.

  • number sense still protects against unreasonable answers;
  • representation still makes complex relationships visible;
  • arithmetic fluency still protects time;
  • transfer still matters when questions look unfamiliar;
  • working steps still support accuracy and recovery;
  • checking still protects marks.

Paper 1: Fluency Must Release Thinking Capacity

Without a calculator, slow or unstable arithmetic consumes attention that should be available for reasoning.

The goal is not reckless speed. It is controlled fluency: enough automaticity that the student can still think about the structure of the question.

Paper 2: Calculator Access Does Not Remove Mathematical Judgement

A calculator can execute a calculation. It cannot decide what the quantities mean, which relationship applies, whether units are consistent or whether the final answer is sensible.

Interpret → represent → select → calculate → verify.

Examination Craft: Convert Capability Into Marks

By P6, Mathematics preparation has two jobs at once:

  • keep repairing the underlying Mathematics; and
  • train the student to make that Mathematics appear reliably under examination conditions.

A paper should therefore generate telemetry:

Lost marks → classify failure → repair → targeted retest → next paper.

Stop Calling Everything Careless

  • concept error;
  • representation error;
  • method-selection error;
  • arithmetic error;
  • calculator-entry error;
  • unit error;
  • time-allocation error;
  • checking failure.

Once the error is typed, the next action becomes clearer.

The 2026 Adaptation Checklist

  1. Secure no-calculator arithmetic.
  2. Practise estimation before exact calculation.
  3. Use representations deliberately.
  4. Mix topics so route selection becomes independent.
  5. Train calculator use without surrendering judgement.
  6. Track time by marks and difficulty.
  7. Build recovery after a difficult question.
  8. Check using question-specific methods.
  9. Classify repeated losses.
  10. Repair before repeating another full paper.

The format changed. The answer is not panic. It is adaptation.
