Primary 4 Is the Straddle Year
Primary 4 sits in an unusual position. The child is no longer in early Primary, but the PSLE runway has not fully begun either.
That makes P4 a structural year.
Lower-primary foundations now have to carry upper-primary complexity.
What Changes at Primary 4?
- fractions and measurement relationships deepen;
- geometry becomes more demanding;
- multi-step word problems become more common;
- models have to represent more complex relationships;
- earlier arithmetic must be retrieved with less effort;
- questions begin to require stronger transfer across topics.
The P4 Problem: A Child Can Know the Topics but Still Lose the Route
A student may understand fractions in one exercise and still fail when fractions appear inside a measurement or word problem. The issue is no longer only knowledge. It is coordination.
Know the parts → connect the parts → choose a representation → build the route.
Darwin: The Model Must Become More Flexible
At P3, a familiar model can often carry the problem. At P4, the child has to decide what the model should represent and whether a different representation would work better.
This is a shift from:

Why P4 Weaknesses Matter Later
P5 and P6 increase the load, but they still depend on the P4 structural frame. If representation, fractions, multiplication fluency or multi-step control remain unstable, the later syllabus amplifies the problem.
This does not mean every weakness requires a large intervention. It means the earliest unstable link should be identified while there is still time to repair it calmly.

What a Strong P4 System Looks Like
- Earlier arithmetic is retrievable without excessive effort.
- The student can explain what a model represents.
- Working is organised enough to inspect.
- The child can handle two or more connected steps.
- Errors are becoming more specific and less repetitive.
- The same Mathematics survives changed wording.
P4 is not merely preparation for P5. It is where the learner proves that the lower-primary engine can carry an upper-primary load.
