A dictionary definition compresses meaning. That compression is useful, but it cannot show every boundary, connotation, collocation or context in which the word behaves naturally.

Angry, irritated, furious, resentful and indignant overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Look, glance, stare, peer and glimpse encode different durations, intentions or visual conditions.
Comparison teaches these boundaries more efficiently than isolated memorisation. The learner begins to ask: what feature makes this word a better fit than its neighbour?
