Wait, What? The Picture Is Not Decoration
A visual or multimodal text asks the reader to make meaning from more than sentences. A headline may be large while a condition is small. A photograph may place one person at the centre and another at the edge. A chart may appear next to a claim. An icon may direct attention before the reader reaches the paragraph that explains it. Meaning is created by the relationship between modes: language, image, layout, scale, sequence, colour, symbols and spatial arrangement.
The Secondary 4 difficulty is not learning a list of design terms. It is learning to answer a bounded question with evidence from the actual text. “The image is eye-catching” is often too vague. “The large photograph of the overflowing bin dominates the poster, making the environmental problem visually immediate before the reader reaches the instructions” explains what the design does and why that effect matters.
Visual analysis becomes useful when the student can connect a visible choice to a particular meaning, audience or purpose without inventing intentions the text cannot support.

The same poster can support different questions. A question about audience requires evidence about who the message addresses. A question about purpose asks what response the text tries to produce. A question about layout asks how placement, size or sequence organises attention. Do not recycle one prepared answer for every visual-text question.

The Six Questions Behind Most Multimodal Reading
- What is the text trying to make the reader know, feel, believe or do?
- Who is the intended reader?
- What attracts attention first, and why?
- How do image and words support, qualify or complicate one another?
- Which details carry evidence rather than decoration?
- What limitation, condition or missing information affects the claim?
Original Multimodal Case: The Library Late-Opening Poster
Imagine a school poster. At the top, in very large type, it says: “THE LIBRARY IS OPEN LATE.” Under the heading is a photograph of three students working around a table. In the bottom third, a smaller box states: “Tuesdays and Thursdays until 6.00 p.m. Student card required. Group rooms must be booked before 2.00 p.m.” Beside the box is a small clock icon. At the bottom appears the line: “More time. More space. One quieter place to finish the day.”
This fictional poster gives enough information to practise audience, salience, layout, image-text relationships, conditions and evaluation. No hidden design intention should be assumed. Every answer should return to what is actually visible in the described text.
Question 1: What Is Salient?
Question: What information is most visually prominent? Worked response: The announcement that the library is open late is most prominent because it appears in the largest text at the top of the poster.
The answer identifies both the information and the visual evidence. “The heading is important” is too circular. “The library wants to attract students” may be reasonable as an inferred purpose, but the question asks about prominence, not motive.
Question 2: Audience From Evidence
Question: Who is the primary audience? Worked response: Current students are the primary audience, suggested by the photograph of students studying and the requirement to bring a student card.
One clue may be enough if it is strong, but using two independent clues makes the reasoning visible. Avoid claiming that the audience is “all teenagers in Singapore” merely because the people pictured are students. The card requirement narrows the audience to people who can use this school facility.
Question 3: Purpose Is More Specific Than “To Inform”
Question: What is one main purpose of the poster? Worked response: It informs students about extended library access and encourages them to use the library after normal school hours.
Many practical texts both inform and persuade. A strong answer can state both when the text supports them. The large announcement provides information, while the photograph and closing line present late opening as useful and appealing.
Question 4: Image and Words Work Together
Question: How does the photograph support the closing line? Worked response: The image shows students already using a shared study table, giving a concrete example of the “space” promised in the line and helping the reader imagine using the library in the same way.
A weak answer says, “The photograph makes the poster attractive.” That may be true, but it does not explain this specific relationship. The stronger answer names the concept in the line and shows how the image represents it.
Question 5: Conditions Can Qualify a Strong Headline
Question: How does the smaller information box qualify the main heading? Worked response: The heading creates a broad impression of late access, while the box limits that access to Tuesdays and Thursdays and adds requirements for identification and group-room booking.
Qualifying does not mean contradicting. The library is still open late on the stated days. The smaller text makes the conditions more precise. Reading only the headline would produce an incomplete model of the offer.
Question 6: Layout Is a Reading Route
The poster creates a likely route: announcement → visual example → conditions → closing benefit. That sequence can help the text move from attention to imagination to practical details. Do not treat this route as guaranteed eye-tracking behaviour for every reader. It is a defensible interpretation of the hierarchy described.
When explaining layout, use spatial language precisely: above, below, beside, central, separated, grouped, enlarged, repeated. “The layout is organised” is a judgement. The answer becomes analytical when it identifies what is grouped and how that arrangement helps the reader process information.
The Difference Between Description and Analysis

Description is not useless. It is the evidence layer. Analysis adds the relationship: what the choice does in this text. If the analysis has no visible evidence beneath it, it may be an unsupported guess.
Colour: Explain Only What the Evidence Allows
If a question supplies colour, you may explain contrast, grouping or association where the context supports it. “Red creates urgency” can be reasonable when red is used for a deadline or warning. It is much weaker as a universal rule. Colour meaning varies with context, culture and surrounding design.
A safer approach is to begin with observable contrast: “The red deadline stands out against the pale background.” Then connect that prominence to the practical importance of the deadline. Avoid psychological certainty such as “Red forces the reader to panic” unless the text provides evidence for that stronger claim.
Typography: Size, Weight and Hierarchy
Large or bold type can signal hierarchy. A different type style can distinguish a slogan from instructions. Repeated formatting can group related information. The analysis should still identify the actual job. “Bold makes it important” is a starting point; “Bold separates the action deadline from explanatory text so a reader scanning quickly can locate it” is more specific.
Do not invent typography that is not given. If the question reproduces only plain text, you cannot assume colour, font or visual prominence that the source does not show. Work with the presented evidence.
Images: Representation Is Not Proof
A photograph of smiling users can represent a positive experience. It does not prove that every user is satisfied. A photograph of one crowded bus can illustrate congestion. It does not establish average crowding across an entire transport system. Visual evidence must be matched to the size of the claim.
Ask whether the image is being used as an example, a symbol, a demonstration, a record or an emotional appeal. Then state the boundary. This protects the answer from turning a vivid image into a universal conclusion.
Graphs and Numbers: Read the Variables Before the Message
When a visual text includes a graph, identify what each axis measures, the unit, the period and the population before interpreting the trend. “The line rises” is not enough if the question asks what increased. “Participation increased from January to March” is more precise when that is what the graph actually shows.
Be careful with percentages. A 50% increase from two to three participants is not the same scale as a 50% increase from two hundred to three hundred. If the chart does not supply the base numbers, do not invent them. If a truncated axis exaggerates the visual difference, you can explain that design effect only when the scale is visible.
Persuasion: Claim, Appeal and Support
A persuasive multimodal text can use emotional appeal, authority, examples, statistics, social proof, urgency, convenience and identity. The student should separate the persuasive technique from the truth of the claim. A famous spokesperson may attract attention without providing evidence that the product works.
Ask three questions: What claim is being advanced? What feature makes the claim attractive or credible? What evidence, if any, actually supports it? This prevents “persuasive” from becoming a synonym for “true”.
Evaluation: What Is Missing?
Evaluation can include noticing missing information. A poster stating “9 out of 10 users prefer the new system” leaves several questions: How many users were asked? How were they selected? Prefer it to what? When was the survey conducted? The absence of those details does not prove that the claim is false. It limits how confidently the reader can interpret it.
Strong evaluative language is calibrated: “The statistic is difficult to assess fully because the poster does not state the sample size.” This is better than “The statistic is fake.” The first claim matches the evidence. The second asserts deception without proof.
Original Case 2: The Revision-App Screen
Imagine a study app home screen. At the top is a progress circle showing “62% weekly target complete”. Below it, a button says “Continue last session”. A smaller link says “Review mistakes”. Three topic cards show different due dates. A banner at the bottom says “Keep your streak alive — 18 minutes left today”.
A question about hierarchy could explain that the progress circle and large continuation button foreground completion and immediate action. A question about self-regulation might note that the mistake-review link is visually less prominent than the streak banner, potentially directing attention toward continuity rather than error analysis. That is an interpretation of the design hierarchy, not a claim that every user will behave the same way.
A question about evidence should distinguish the factual display “62% weekly target complete” from the persuasive phrase “Keep your streak alive”. The first reports progress according to the app’s target system. The second frames continued use as preserving an achievement. Neither statement, by itself, proves that the student is learning effectively.

A Twelve-Minute Practice Routine
- Spend two minutes identifying audience, purpose and the most salient feature.
- Spend three minutes describing the reading route and two image-text relationships.
- Spend three minutes answering one effect question with evidence.
- Spend two minutes identifying one limitation or condition.
- Spend two minutes checking whether any claim exceeds the text.
This is a teaching routine, not an official time allocation. Adjust it to the actual task. The point is to make the reasoning visible before compressing it into examination speed.
Unfamiliar Transfer Challenge
Take an unfamiliar webpage, public-information poster or school notice. Without using the examples above, answer six prompts: Who is the audience? What is the main purpose? What attracts attention first? How do two modes work together? What condition or limitation matters? What claim would go beyond the evidence?
Then change the text type. If the student can move from a poster to a webpage without waiting for a memorised “poster technique”, the method is becoming transferable.

Do not ask only, “What does the picture show?” Ask how the text has arranged the reader’s attention, what relationship the modes create and which conclusion the evidence actually supports.
See the choice. Name the evidence. Explain the relationship. Keep the conclusion inside the text.
